    I bought the R.E.P. Gaming Case earlier this year after watching this video. If you are building a cube or own a cube, this is everything you could possibly want. With the 2 dividers positioned as in the video, you can fit a 540 card (double sleeved) cube perfectly in just 4 of the middle compartments and the outer compartments are perfect for holding your basic lands. The website also sales colored dividers. I use those to indicate which compartment has what color lands in it. This still leaves 2 middle compartments and 1 outer compartment to use for random decks or whatever else you want. Its a great product!

    That REP case is sweet. I'd wager the handle is on the top rather than the side to prevent any inside rivets from damaging cards.

    Getting back into MTG after a few years away. All sorts of stuff that was not around when I last played. Been binging on a lot of your videos, thank you for your reviews and opinions. But, what got me to reply on this video was I'm glad you mentioned the handle location on the R.E.P. case because, just by looking, that was bugging me as well.

    nice video (as always), i think i'll buy the R.E.P. as soon as they release a version with the handle on top of the case, because that's actually the first thing that came to mind when i saw the video. I've been looking for a suitcase style transport for my edh collection and think this (with a handle on the top) might be it.

    Love the functionality of the Pirate Lab one. It's essentially everything I've been searching for in a carrier case. I checked their page and found out they even have overseas shipping! Too bad the 3 row max capacity foam carriers are out of stock at the moment. Bet that's totally your fault, Professor!

    I am quite sure that the handle placement on the Gaming Case is due to the manufaction-process. I recently built a similar box on my own (for my cube aswell) and I found that the screws of a potential handle bear the risk of colliding with my cards and therefore tearing sleeves etc. That's why I think they played it in the top where, due to the seperating foam, nothing get stuck in the screws.
    By the way, I'm really excided for the Pirate Lab Tray, That way I can have one case for my cube and one for all my EDH-Decks and don't have to store multiple boxes in various sizes, or have to refill a box everytrime I go out

    The handle placement is ideal if you have partially filled slots in your cube or collection, so that the cards are less likely to flop around. With a full weight instead of an empty box, there should be a lot less movement in such a design.

    Professor - How does the pirate lab do for storage means? Does it safely protect your deck boxes and cards if you were to stack other things on top of it? Does it protect well against possible water exposure?
    I ask because I am hoping to purchase this to store some things long-term, while being able to easily grab it and take it to a friends house if need be. Most cases I come across have the issue of not having enough room for my deck boxes, or not properly protecting them.

    Hey professor, when you said that you were going to buy more of the foam trays I immediately thought of the cost. To me the foam looks like an ethylene vinyl accalate, which can be commonly found in hardware stores as anti-fatique flor matting and comes in large puzzle shaped squares and it's rather inexpensive. Personally I use this Eva foam for making props from videogames. But I believe it could be easily transformed into one of those foam trays. :)

    If people are looking for great cube storage I suggest getting the Hobby Lobby Wooden Artist Case and fitting it with Broken Token's Standard-Sized Card Organizer. For less than $50 and a bit of elbow grease you get a great sturdy piece of card storage that can hold tons of cards. I put mine together last night and I'm amazed at how much it could hold.

  • @punkcommunizt
    @punkcommunizt 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I got a theory why they put the handling on the top of the case.. Pardon my English i will try to explain it well, i think they want to reduce the ''concussion'' of the card on the top of the box (which have foam) and the stress applied on the weaker par of the card: ( i mean by the weaker part of the card : technically i think the vertical axe of the card could put more pressure on the middle of the card and could eventually if not well tighten* give more chance to your card to curve , especially the foiled one.) . I think it can also help your card when not double sleeved or in a less tight sleeve to slide of of your sleeve and expose them to abrasion, humidity or just give you the job to to put them back into the bottom of their sleeve. The sway of the might give more pressure to your front and back card image / mtg logo, if not tight fit and may apply friction if not well packed. Sorry for the nightmare grammar

  • @danielbrooks1473

    I wonder if the handle placement on the suitcase box was to ensure the cards stayed upright? How much shifting around was there?

    • @TolarianCommunityCollege
      @TolarianCommunityCollege  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Daniel Brooks As you can see in the video, if a section is not full, the cards will obviously fall over in the available space. However, the foam lining at the top is both thick and effective. Cards will jostle if there is space, period. Obviously, you don't want cards to jostle, even if sleeved. But I do not feel they'd ever come free of their compartments or anything serious.
      REP contacted me and said their reasoning was indeed out of concern for card movement during transport. Not sure I agree this is an issue, but that was their reasoning anyway. It's still an excellent and gorgeous case.

  • @dngerouds
    @dngerouds 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just attach the foam to a wall or place them into several drawers, with the opening facing towards you.
    Without Boxes inside you can spray them in colors of your choice and make it look amazing.

    While I like the idea of the Pirate Lab tray, the edges of the outer case seemed to cave in quite a bit when you pressed upon it with your hands. I justed imagined if I had put loose (sleeved) cards in there, especially in the first row, they might have got bent by the pressure from outside. Did you do any further testing on that?

    My partner has had $200 worth of cards damaged severely by the REP gaming case when the cards slouch over in the rows and then get pinched closing the case.
    If you are going to use it with decks not in individual boxes you will want to jam something stiff in the ends of the rows to keep cards out of the pinch zone.

    How do either of these trays handle loose cards in transport? I feel if I put a few decks in the R.E.P gaming case my cards would go everywhere because it seems to me to have a lot of extra space. I could see putting deck boxes in the case, and being fine. Also, the wooden dividers, while nice, don't seem to be able to hold loose cards either without, once again, a lot of extra space. Also, the wooden dividers means it's difficult to put in different sized deck boxes. The handle location is crap, I feel you did quite a poor job properly evaluating both of these cases.
    The foam Pirate Lab one seems to address many of these issues in a more positive way. The foam is adjustable, and I feel like there is a lot less extra space in the case, so my cards won't go everywhere in transport. The handle is the right spot, and the quality is good. Yet you rated one B++, and the other an A.....not much of a difference, for what is, in my objective opinion, a massive difference in usability. I feel this review really lacked that aspect.

    • @MichaelSultai
      @MichaelSultai 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've had my REP card case for about two months now and love it but, like the professor said, it's not really for daily transport. Mine goes from the bookcase it sits in to the kitchen table and that is it 99% of the time.
      In terms of loose cards I would say as long as each section is about half full there is nothing to worry about. The lid comes down as far as it can without making it impossible to fit deck boxes inside. The clearance is so minimal that my basic Ultra Pro 80 card deck boxes leave little square indentations in the foam that lines the lid. The cases/cards are fine FYI. Hope that helps you out a little.

      I prefer to run the dragon shield personally, they are durable, I have never had one split and I have had some for like 5 years. The only problem is what the proff. has pointed out is that they can get sticky some times. You get the added benefit of a box to keep the sleeved deck in as well.

    Can I fit my Xenoskin Flip'n'tray boxes in the pirate lab foam? I have an 80+ and 100+ box and I'm interested in being able to store them in the foam for travel.

      +Tyler Rowe It's high density foam. If they don't fit you can always use an exacto knife and a little patience to widen the channel

    Do you have cards specifically for demonstrating the space of deck boxes?

      +JoshS I remember he discussed this in one of his videos (the behind the scenes one). He just uses his own decks. There aren't any that seem to be JUST for testing out products.

    • @atrixnorthwind6225
      @atrixnorthwind6225 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks i wanted to be in standard but on a really small budget and wasnt sure since theros rotated out of standard

      +atrix north wind You can use any card that has a reprint in a standard-legal set. And since all sets reprint basic lands, you can use them, but you can also use older version of non-land standard-legal cards.

      Thank you, the large one can fit nicely into my suit case that I put my cards in anyways. That will be a nice change from the cardboard 1000 count boxes that I have

    Great video professor, but do you think you can make a video on a more budget option?

    • @FirstLast-wg6lq
      @FirstLast-wg6lq 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      just do toploaders or sideloaders from ultrapro, legion and ultimate guard or just use the pro duals, the prof's recommended for budget users. i personally use the latter and ive had little complaints about it. decently cheap and as a plastic box it can be modified with duct tape lol. prof also suggested satin towers for budget upgrade of deckbox. if ure asking for budget storage boxes, ask ur lgs for the BCW cardboard storage cases. prof has made reviews for these previously and i can vouch that the prof's reviews are on point, in terms of the grading of the budget options

    • @mtgnoob3823
      @mtgnoob3823 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Get a satin tower, $10 and it holds dice and 100 sleeved cards. Or you can get the ultra pro basic deck box, it's just plastic and small, can barely hold the whole 75 cards, but it's like $2.50. The flipntray is good but I have never used it. I don't know what price it is though

    I just wish I had known about the new tray in that Pirate Lab case early enough to ask for it this Christmas. I really disliked the old tray so I wasn't interested but this new tray completely changes my feelings.
