Whenever I’m out I always carry a compass and before I go I figure out my “safety bearing”. This isn’t a specific accurate bearing but more a general direction toward a road, rail, power line or river. Something that I can’t miss if I’m walking that direction.
Similarly if I go off trail I figure out the general direction I need to go back to hit the trail again and then if I get turned around I can use the sun or my compass quickly.
A phone or GPS would be superior but a compass won’t run out of batteries and the accuracy needed to walk “east” until you find the large thing you can’t miss makes it a good backup IMHO.

I use a compass too every time I get off trail. I have a map compass hanging on my next, point compass in direction I am heading, turn bezel and put red arrow in the shed, only takes a second and compass direction is set, return direction is 180 degrees from that setting.

I ended up putting my pad inside the liner, gives me the R value under me, keeps pad quite and protects it from anything that may be under it. Pad doesn't even get removed to pack up, i just air down and roll the pad and liner together.

For international flights there are often restrictions on things like: meat, seeds, nuts, fresh fruits and vegetables - this is to prevent potential "contamination" (eg. planting some invasive plant species) and health/safety.

    Group privy:
I'm not sure if it's still done but in the military mostly during basic training there were no stalls. I believe the thinking was that it puts everyone on the same level, no one is better than another we all do the same thing and oddly enough supports the thought of teamwork, lol. It may also prepare one for when they were on an extended field exercise or, war time event, it's not or was not uncommon to have a latrine for several people, basically one big pit.

I’m a female hiker. I use a large mouth Nalgene bottle at night. I hate having to put on shoes and a headlight to go to the privy, especially if it’s cold out. And the zip to get out, zip to keep stuff out, then zip to get back in and final zip. If you have neighbors, I’m sure you woke them up.
That could be why there are two holers… you woke them up and now they’re joining you cause they now have to pee. 😂

  • @fluffbigrollingmarshmallow

I would say that the two-holer would be helpful for anyone hiking with kids. Not necessarily because you are going to do your business at the same time, but because there is just more space available for two people to be in there at the same time. I have seen younger children afraid to go in a privy by themselves. As always, enjoy your videos!

Dixie, re: bag liner issue. I don't hike or climb anymore, but even 50 years ago I always packed a very light weight "bivy bag". It is sort of like a "space blanket" developed by NASA. They weigh next to nothing. If I was day hiking I considered it one of my essentials. If I was hiking or climbing and carrying my standard sleeping bag and found myself in extreme conditions, which happened a couple times, I would use the bivy bag as an EXTERNAL cover OVER the sleeping bag. It was much better than any liner I ever tried. It protected the bag and kept my body heat in, significantly improving my comfort in those conditions. Negative; it can get a bit clammy in your sleeping bag with a bivy bag as a shell over it if you are prone to sweating a lot. I have actually been on climbs on Mt. Rainier when a guide service put clients who couldn't continue to the summit into bivy bags alongside the climb route and picked them up on the way down. They were none the worse (physically) for the experience. In one case, a guide service had several clients who couldn't continue (out of a group of 25 or so). Once there were a total of four or five drop outs they would immediately send a guide down, collect them all along the way, and get them safely down to (at least) base camp where they would be safer, more comfortable, and have some companionship. I can tell you that the stories of the feeling of intense loneliness that were shared later by those who were "bagged" had a real impact on me - I was never going to drop out on a climb if there was any way I could safely continue without putting others on my team at risk. A couple actually said they wondered if the guides would really come by to get them on the way down or they were going to die up there.

If you're using a liner for warmth, then consider a lightweight down throw instead. Slip it inside of your sleeping bag. Adds lots of warmth and does not tangle up like a liner.

I tried to use a liner to keep the sleeping bag cleaner, but it always get tangled up and just don't work for me. In stead I use the thinnest long sleeved top and long underwear I can find for sleep clothes. Using clothes in stead has the additional advantage of doubling as emergency dry layer and sometimes as camp clothes.
Vestibules: I orient the tent and vestibule based on weather conditions and terrain.

My sleep system includes a blanket inside my sleeping bag.
I use 2 yards by 45 inchs of insul-bright material bought at any fabric store.
It is breathable and reflex's your body heat back down.
The material is very light and is used on the inside of pot holders.
Think of it as a soft space blanket that is breathable.
I am thinking of making a bevy bag out of it.

Flying into Australia, which has one of the most stringent biosecurity requirements of any country, being an island, you can bring sealed items in but you have to declare it and it could be confiscated. If you don't declare it and they find it, it will be confiscated and you'll be heavily fined.

Re the dual toilets... my friend who lives off grid says one is for pee the other for poo. I think the way his compost works is that the solids decompose best when there isn't liquid mixed in. Mind you... we all know some solids are ... liquidy. Also, as a female bodied person... one thing I came to realize is that it's hard for me to use a P-style or STP device because I never learned how to release my bladder only and not my bowels. I think for those of us who were always sitting, we weren't taught or didn't develop the muscles to do one and not the other.

The double seater comes from way back. It used to be common practice, and people just weren't as worried about it then. Other countries now days have community poop holes in the ground and there are no privacy dividers, so to me it's gross not going to happen, but less than 100 years ago before formal plumbing it was rather common to have two or more seats per outhouse. I wonder if it's more for tradition now days on the trail, or if it's for some of the reasons you have guessed.

I totally understand getting disoriented from trail. Especially if you have trouble finding "the spot" and you move in a variety of different vectors while off trail. I am surprised how often backpackers leave their gear by the trail. I have not backpacked that much as a civilian so i am used to having everything I possess within arms reach at any one time. I would never drop my pack and leave line of sight with it. It is hard for me to leave my tent to go to my bear hang for food. lol
To be clear, I dont fear people taking my gear, I fear a critter taking or chewing or otherwise taking an undesired interest in my gear.

I use one of those hdpe 32oz nalgene bottles, the ones with the blue cap and smokey white body, for pee bottle duty. I reckon I don't want to be taking risks with a disposable plastic drink bottle or anything with a chance of leaking and flooding my tent. Actually thinking I may upsize to the 48oz to avoid having to pop out of the tent at three or four in the morning if i happen to drink some tea or soup before bed. Old man problems.

With regards to the section on facing your tent to or away from the trail, the thing is people can sneak up on you anywhere, and any sub-group of a population is likely going to have similar proportions of types of people. What I mean by that is that if say here in the states, let's just say 1 in every 100 people is a violent criminal or certified whackaloon. That's 1% of the population that is what we might call a "bad apple." In sub-groups of the population, such as thru-hikers and backpackers, statistically speaking, we'd expect to see a similar 1% give or take of that sub-group will also be bad apples. The smaller the sub-group, the faster news travels in that community, and bad news is always remembered the strongest. As such, a lot of the hiking stories people remember are the bad ones that make attacks on the trail seem more common than a mugging in a big city when you're still more likely to have a car accident than have such an encounter on the trail. It doesn't matter where you go in the world, there's always going to be some nuts and bad apples who ruin other people's days. The best option isn't about shelter placement, it's about keeping a decent knife with you while you sleep. It's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Hey Dixie! I do think that the 2 seats are to better fill up the hole, because i did went to a privy that had hardware for a padlock on each, but there was a padlock only on the more empty one. At another one there was some kind of primitive system, where a plywood was blocking one of the the holes and there was some wood railings permitting the switch between blocking one of the hole and the other having the seat.

    “Hiker with a tail!” 🤣🤣🤣
A good habit for leaving trail and getting back…look behind and pick out a landmark/s to follow back. If u do get turned around you can walk the approximate time (plus a bit extra) that you walked off trail towards the direction u think is correct. If you don’t find the trail, return to starting point and begin another timed “spoke”. Keep walking spokes from your center point until you intersect back w the trail. Pay attention to terrain. If you walked downhill first you need to go back uphill to return. Seems like a “duh!” statement, but ppl do start to panic when they think they’re lost. Stop for 10 mins, calm yourself down, and think before blundering off.

G'day y'all, just weighing in on the food restrictions for anyone flying into Australia for the Overland Track/Great Ocean Walk/etc - we have incredibly strict customs here around food because of our livestock/export standards.
Freeze dried stuff (Sealed) is fine, I brought back half a suitcase of assorted Peak/Mtn House meals from Texas - but anything fresh/opened/fruit & nuts will likely be confiscated.

  • @Arbie812

Flying internationally with food, I think strictly speaking they say it's not permitted, but realistically I doubt they check, especially if it's in original packaging and nothing fermented or home made or anything. I once made the mistake of strictly adhering to these regulations and bring nothing with me, only to have to pay for extra time at the hotel just to go food shopping, and even then being unable to find anything in backpacking friendly quantities. In retrospect I should've brought my own food, in its store packaging, from home. Worst they can do is, what, confiscate it and maybe slap you on the wrist with some minimal fine?
Likewise with gas canisters or small knives. (Do NOT try taking gas canisters on a plane, if it needs saying, I'm talking about trains here) Strictly speaking it's prohibited taking these on a train in France, but in practice there was zero control or security checking these things. That may have changed now, but I could've brought a backpack full of machetes and firearms and nobody would've noticed, let alone a single 200g gas canister and a swiss army knife. From my experience, if you're discreet about it and don't have it out on the open for train staff to see, they're not going to pry into what you have in your pack. Again, that may change in the future, but as of a couple of years ago, that's what I saw.

The double toilet got me scratching my head, I've never seen anything like this! There must be a practical reason for this. I agree that it's cheaper to build it in one block rather than two separate outhouses but it's also not that expensive to include a dividing wall and an extra door. And why not build a small single toilet with a double the size underground container?
The wheelchair users theory...it's about the floor space and being able to turn the wheelchair around to transfer to the toilet seat. Not about the extra seat. For the accessibility the construction would be wider, no need to add another hole and the seat.
Who uses the toilet together? Parents with children, spouses, good friends...Maybe it's done at the extra cost, to improve the flow of the crowd in busy spots?

Distance is a function of time. You just need to know how long it has been and your typical pace. With a watch, once I have found my pace, I can track my progress amazingly accurately (well, I was amazed at how accurate I was anyway). If you know you hike about 4 miles in an hour, then it is pretty easy to calculate about how far you have traveled in the past 90 minutes.
