I like that mentioned the consignment predicament. I live in an area where we don’t have very many thrift stores, and if we do they mostly just have clothes. Our best option is Facebook marketplace which can have its own problems, and the closest REI is 3-4 hours away. So just being able to order stuff that you know will be good online is great.

🥳 yay!! I'm so excited for this video - this whole budget series has been so fun and educational for me, and seriously such a treat to share! Thanks for watching 💚
@@MirandaGoesOutside it has been so fun and educational for all of us too. We really appreciate all the work you've all put into it 🫶 Omg. Woah. That murmuration was gorgeous 😍
Have you done a video where you've talked about your mittens? I know you've discussed other gear you wear to stay warm, but keeping my hands warm is a HUGE deal and a huge struggle for me, so I'd love to see more about that. Love this video! Seeing the full end result is so satisfying!
Agree that headlamps are so useful and worth it even if you don't camp/hike a lot. I've used mine for several home repairs because it puts the light exactly where you need it and leaves both hands free.
I camped in that exact area with my dogs in spring! If you would've walked all the way back to the rock wall, i camped there by the stone throne with a view! Best sunset and sunrise seat with a coffee 😍 the birds fly up into that rock wall at night, which was cool also. I absolutely loved this place! It looks even more amazing in the winter.
It’s GORGEOUS in the winter!! Barely anyone there (we had the place to ourselves!) and one of the last places you can backpack in the season! It did get brutally cold at night, but so beautiful and so worth the trip.
Your recommendation regarding LMNT - When I visited the States a couple of months ago from the UK and before going on a long hike in South America I made the decision to buy some packs of LMNT. I also passed the information on to my folks at the same time. It was one of the best things I did given some of the health issues we experienced. So thanks for sharing and thanks to LMNT for the sponsorship.
Thank you for this whole series! My partner and I are looking into getting into backpacking in the coming year and we've been trying to figure out what basic gear to start with to test out the experience. We very much appreciate these videos.
Agreed. Headlamps are handy even if you don't backpack (yet). They're very nice to have around the house or in your go-bag in case of a power outage or other emergency, in the car in case you drop something important or break down at night, or even just in your garage so you don't have to always kick on a full overhead light just to grab something off one of the shelves. You might even enjoy one if you are a Disc Golfer who occasionally bumps up against sunset in your games, since you're eyes naturally adjust to sunset lighting, but you might want that extra light when you're heading back to the car, or sunset was just a little too quick this evening. ;) BTW: Thank you SO Much for going through the trouble of testing all this gear for us. I'm gonna have to rewatch this for review next time I save a few more bucks up to toss at my (currently rather incomplete) backpacking kit. Only having $3-$8 going spare at the end of a month, EVERY month, kinda sucks. :/ Thank you many times over, so I don't have to copy/paste it roughly 48 more times. TH-cam might get mad. ;)
I finally finished the core-85% of the gear i want. the hardest part is finding a trail/camp that wont absolutely discourage me from going backpacking again. now that its winter, seems like everywhere i can go is snowed and i do not want to do that current :(. would love a video on how the heck to plan for a trip!! Love your videos!
Loved the round up. I hope you will do an update on all your current favorites regardless of price - if they have changed. It seems like you tried a number of new items this year.

That's awesome that you help folks that would love to go backpacking but may not have the funds for all the gear, as we know it can be very expensive, oh, we went climbing in the Bugaboos this summer and your stove worked great , 3 weeks of cooking and never failed thanks for sharing Larry Owens Bishop Ca
That orange toaks pot bag sheds an insane amount of plastic. Rub it against itself over a sheet of white paper. I replaced mine with a rubber band. It's lighter and doesn't shed microplastics
Ooo! Thank you so much for the modification suggestions on the backpack. I have had the same pack and after trying it on, wasn't sure what to do to make it more comfortable for the female frame.
Tucker once decided the best place for him to sit was on my couch in between me and a friend in the two inch gap between us rather than the other like 6 feet of free available couch.
I ordered the hiking shoes based on your first review of them. Comfortable, budget friendly, and love the color! I haven't had the opportunity to hike in them yet (waiting on hubster's health issues be resolved), but they are really comfortable wearing out & about. The budget series has been great! Stunning videograghy as well!
I love my Forclaz down jacket. It sells for less here in Canada, and I was lucky enough last year to get mine at a grand opening special for only $50. The regular price here is $85. 😊 Highly recommend this jacket.
I've had the paria xl sleeping pad for about a year and love it. I also have their 15° backpacking quilt. Paria seems like a good company and I've been very happy with anything I've got from them.
Is that a CTUG bear canister key attached to your canister's lid? I used several pieces of Paria gear, including the Recharge XL, on my AT thru hike. They are a fantastic company with a great product warranty and customer service. They are definitely worth checking out when buying gear.
First, I love your style and outlook, you and Rainer make me smile every week. Second, what camera gear are you using? Your videos are so clear and perfect. Your team inspires me more each time I see the videos to go outside and see this world we live in, away from the cities.

PLUS Tag-a long Tucker ... I never hike without my dog ... maybe include Tuckers' gear loadout as well ... lots of good canine gear of differing costs and uses ... Another good one for sleeping pads: flextail zero mattress (R5) Relatively inexpensive, pretty high R-value, and looks quite comfortable (I haven't tried it myself)
I've been waiting for this one! I'm a car camper, but I would like to visit the Channel Islands (California) and backpacking gear would be the way to go.
Hi! I'm Tucker. And this is my show gosh darn it. I like my Quidian pack when I'm on a 1 or 2 day hike and my pack is 20 or so pounds. I like your hack and am going to try it.
Totally agree on the bear bagging! I think this is a practice that needs to die. It is nearly impossible to find a trees that meet the necessary standard, even if you do find those mythical trees, it is still difficult to do correctly. Lastly - I've been in a scenario where someone else in camp followed all those standards. . .and a cub was still able to climb up the branch and swipe the line. Bears kept returning to the site every hour all night. In order of responsibility, I would put bear canister at the top, but controversially (although increasingly less so) sleeping with your food above bear bagging. If you sleep with your food, at least there is a deterant. As a note - the bear cables they have sites are very good, but yeah, bears a really good at climbing trees and cutting lines.
I would say where you want to save and where you want to spend, do that. I bought a Nemo sleeping bag second hand, the north face tent second hand and an ultra light bag second hand. It took months to do it but I’m super happy! I did buy clothing, stove and other essentials brand new.
I wonder if the 3FUL pack would fit better, but still function, with only half of the folding mat. Assuming the folding mat isn't your primary mat. With only two layers, the shoulder straps should fit better. Doesn't help with torso length. Fun series.
Love this video and the whole series. Super bummed that the UL pack didn’t turn out to be a winner. Maybe they will make a smaller/women’s version someday. Thanks for the great info!
No permit needed!! It gets really busy in the spring and early fall (it’s WAY too hot in the middle of summer) but there are tons of beautiful camp spots!
Great videos! I really like the budget gear series; it’s been very helpful. I wonder if the width of the sleeping pad contributed to the issue with shoulder straps/load lifters?
Great question! They don’t, because the comfort rating depends on so many different factors - body composition, activity level when in use, layering, etc!
I have the 3fulgear backpack, I like it a lot but the first thing i did after i got it was cut up my sleeping pad that went in the back. Pad had 14 'panels' and i only use 6. And now it sits a lot better, however this is not a fix for the torso length. I'm 1,8m and I cant speak for shorter framed people, but if you're my hight or taller I really recommend it.
I always thought so too, but before this trip I was doing some research and saw a few folks recommend putting it on top - so I gave it a try! Honestly, I’m not sure I noticed much of a difference. I asked a friend of mine who works in gear design, and they said it ultimately probably doesn’t make much of a difference *where* the pad goes - but their recommendation was to stick with keeping it underneath. I talked about this a bit when we were filming, but we wound up cutting it from the video for clarity’s sake!
Hey! Do you mean load lifters? If so, yes! But they didn’t sit right on my body, so I had to make an adjustment to them as you’ll see towards the end of the video.
in regards to sleeping pads, i wonder if you could gain some true insulation/warmth that you could feel by putting them into a fleece sleeping bag (which would likely also help with noise and also keep pads together if you are stacking a closed cell foam underneath) which i would also prefer to lay on if i were using a quilt. what do you think? you can find the fleece bags for 15 to 20 dollars i believe.
Beautiful! I've only been to that side of the mountains once (Untanum river Canyon) and I've been wanting to go back!! My 4 year old is watching with me and he wants to go here so we'll put it on our list. Do you find that side of the mountains is colder at night than the western side? Does it depend on time of year? Also I feel like 34# is not bad at all considering the budget gear and carrying all your water. Fun video!
I concur, go with heavier more inexpensive gear, and replace it with more expensive "quality" gear as you can. You don't want to buy something less durable and have it break, and then you're forced to buy a replacement or stop hiking/camping.
It totally depends on what rental locations you have near you! For example, in my tiny town of Leavenworth, WA, we have lots of options for renting snow gear but very few options for renting backpacking equipment. If you live near a major city with an REI or another large outdoor retailer, you can likely rent gear there! Some gear is easier to rent (packs, tents, bear cans) and other gear is harder to find for rent (sleeping bags, pads, clothing) but it’s definitely worth checking around.
Decathlon sell camping tents for 30€ that pack just as small as the tent you showed. I love your Buget backpacking Videos. I think Budgetbackpacks are really difficult to find and its one pice of gear you should spend more money on. Mine is from deuter.
Regarding your comments about the pack around 11 minutes into the video: Gossamer Gear (and other pack makers) have been using removable pads on their packs for at least a decade (see the Mariposa, the Gorilla and the G4-20, among others). So while it is a cool feature on the 3FUL pack, it's not their idea. They copied it from the cottage guys and THEIR innovative packs. Cheers.
Oh my gosh this word will be the END OF ME. Rainer always teases me for how I say it, but when I try to say it right, I end up saying “Ang-see-int” 😅 According to Rainer, everyone thinks I say words weird, so at least I’m consistent.
@ Oh! My Sambob doesn’t have the contrast stitching, although mine also isn’t custom. I didn’t know they had that option even for custom so I assumed it was a Melly hehe. Love the colors!
that REI pack doesnt even count as budget gear IMO, it cost more than my Zpacks sub nero which weighs just over half a pound with the sit pad that makes up the "frame"
Yeah, I struggle to call it budget for sure 😬 It’s “budget” by REI standards, I guess?? Important to note that a pack like the Zpacks sub Nero is only 30L though, and likely not a good choice for a first pack for most folks!! But still yes. Agree that the Trailmade 60 is realllllllly pushing the definition of budget.
Thanks for the video. Quick question why a spork? So hard to get the food out of the bottom of any container, unless you are planning on eating a steak I don’t see the appeal. 🤷🏼♀️
Oh good question! Honestly, I just have better luck with sporks than spoons. Everytime I use a long handled spoon, I miss my spork! Could that be partly just that I am sentimental about my sporks? Maybe 😅
How can you truly test the sleeping pad when you have a closed foam cell sleeping pad on top??? SO RIDICOULOUS!!!! Sigh... I'm embarrassed to say that I followed this nonsense when I first started getting into hiking. I'm out.... going to watch real folks who aren't a bunch of TH-cam fluff. Meh..
It would have been wildly unfair to this pad to not use it with a closed cell foam pad due to the low temperatures at night. This pad was not designed for sub-30-degree temps, but I wanted to be able to still test it. While I’ve always assumed putting my closed cell foam pad underneath my inflatable pad was the way to go, I was informed that putting it on top might be a better course of action this time around to optimize warmth. I can’t say for certain that I noticed much of a difference in warmth, but again, I wanted to make sure I was giving the Paría pad a fair chance by adding a small R-value to bring the overall warmth of the pad up to an acceptable level for the temperatures at which it’s designed to be used.

any interest in renting gear? where would you go, how much would it cost? How easy is it to rent everything you need?
It totally depends on what rental locations you have near you! For example, in my tiny town of Leavenworth, WA, we have lots of options for renting snow gear but very few options for renting backpacking equipment. If you live near a major city with an REI or another large outdoor retailer, you can likely rent gear there! Some gear is easier to rent (packs, tents, bear cans) and other gear is harder to find for rent (sleeping bags, pads, clothing) but it’s definitely worth checking around.
Quadzilla took that backpack on the AT this last year. He did stop his Yo-Yo and still has some videos to post, but that pack eventually tore on him.
You should try a chocolate Raspberry packet of LMNT in plain oatmeal! So yummy and no sugar.
Oooo I never thought of that!! I’m definitely going to try it.
Screw metric, how many 6" subs can that bad boy fit in it
This will be the unit of measurement that units the world
👀 I see what you did there
Telling my doctor I’m 10 and 3/4ths 6” subs tall.
@@RainerGoldenwait Rainer you're only like 5ft4...ish? Is my math mathing correctly BC both of you guys give off 6ft energy at least
@ Oh wow I did my math way wrong. I’m 5’ 10” which is in fact a little over eleven and a half 6” subs 🤣
Commenting for the algorithm!
❤
Decathlon sell camping tents for 30€ that pack just as small as the tent you showed. I love your Buget backpacking Videos. I think Budgetbackpacks are really difficult to find and its one pice of gear you should spend more money on. Mine is from deuter.
The Bare Boxer bear canister is cheaper and lighter than the Bear Vault. I'm not sure why it always gets overlooked.
How about a budget day hike gear video?
Regarding your comments about the pack around 11 minutes into the video: Gossamer Gear (and other pack makers) have been using removable pads on their packs for at least a decade (see the Mariposa, the Gorilla and the G4-20, among others). So while it is a cool feature on the 3FUL pack, it's not their idea. They copied it from the cottage guys and THEIR innovative packs. Cheers.
❤Ain't without the t + chin + t = ancient
Oh my gosh this word will be the END OF ME. Rainer always teases me for how I say it, but when I try to say it right, I end up saying “Ang-see-int” 😅 According to Rainer, everyone thinks I say words weird, so at least I’m consistent.
I wish I could afford the gas to come see you at the Kula Cloth Pee Party on Dec 19th!
Aww I wish so too!! It’s going to be a blast.
Perhaps if I save enough on other stuff I still have enough money for the backpack of my dreams, so thank you!
15:46 I totally thought that you had farted and wanted to trick Rainer into sniffing it
OH DANG IT I SHOULD HAVE DONE THAT
@ 😂
Next haul?...TEMU.
🥰👍
Love the colors of your .. Melanzana? I think I see the logo on the side.
It’s actually a SamBob hoodie! And thank you - I picked the colors myself! SamBob does custom hoodies. Check them out! sambob.biz/
@ Oh! My Sambob doesn’t have the contrast stitching, although mine also isn’t custom. I didn’t know they had that option even for custom so I assumed it was a Melly hehe. Love the colors!
too bad there is no walmart or REI here in europe :(
that REI pack doesnt even count as budget gear IMO, it cost more than my Zpacks sub nero which weighs just over half a pound with the sit pad that makes up the "frame"
Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink. 😢
Expansive views? 'laughs in Kansan'
Maybe 😅
Can you do an ultralight version 👉👈🥺 I have a bad back and can’t carry 34 pounds
walmart and Amazon :(
those should be blacklisted. I'd say it's unethical to show those brands as if they are even worth considering
