  • Here is a video explaining how I 'Center a Tee' or 'Fold it in Half' to get the best side to side results on your tie-dye tee. This time I broke it into 3 parts to make it easier to understand, I backed the camera up so you can see the whole tee, & I used a discharged black tee so you can see the hems I am pointing at. Third time is the Charm hopefully.

    I know this video is a yr old but I just found you. I wanted to say thank you for all your videos because others would say the sleeves are folded together, and I'm scratching my head asking myself what in the world are they talking about. Another thing they never explain what things mean like batching, because of you I now know and when they use just letters like DOI? Haven't got a clue what that is. Any way thanks again, have a blessed one.

      You are so welcome ... I love to help other have fun and success with this art ... and yes the more people who do it and then try to describe to others... more and more abbreviations show up ... DOI = Dye Over Ice ... it is an Ice Dyeing term meaning the put the ice on and then add the dye on top of it as compared to DUI, Dye Under Ice, meaning they added the dye to the tee and then put ice on top of it ... someplace on one of the FB tie-Dye pages, there is a list of abbreviations or Acronyms ...
      here is one I found on the Ice Dyeing Page, I am sure there are more of them around :
      Muck: the liquid that is created from your ice melting and mixing with your dye powder. Dying ona rack means your item is elevated above this liquid, dying in the much means tour item is left in this liquid.
      Rack: your item is elevated above the bottom of a container, so it does not sit in the melted ice and dye.
      DOI: Dye Over Ice. Dye powder is sprinkled on top of ice.
      DUI: Dye Under Ice. Dye powder is sprinkled directly on item, before placing ice.
      LOI: Liquid Over Ice. Dye is mixed into liquid and applied over ice.
      LWI: Low Water Immersion. A process in which soda ash solution is added last, after
      your item has absorbed all the dye and the ice has melted. Usually in a tightly fitting container.
      HWI: Hot Water Irrigation/Immersion. A process in which soda ash solution is added
      last, very slowly in a fine mist or with a dropper, at a temperature of 160°
      OWB: OUT! White Bright. A product used to remove dye from fabric, activated with boiling
      water. Use outside with a respirator.
      Reverse Dye: When the original fabric color is removed with bleach or OWB, and then dyed back over with different colors.
      SA: Soda Ash. The fixative you need for your dye to adhere to your fabric. It can be mixed into liquid solution with water, sprinkled directly onto your item, sprinkled over ice, or mixed into a hot water solution and poured over your item after the ice has melted.
      TDS: Tall Deep Scrunch, coined by Kristen Ann Ryon.
      LBS: Little Bitty Scrunch, coined by Lauren Shaw.

I used to dye in the 60's then life came along, now I'm retired and have never lost the love of tie dye. Thank you for the share and the clarity in your videos. I have a question, you do soda ash before you dye so if I do that and leave my item damp do I need to put any more on if I ice dye, or do I not do the soda ash first and Is there a certain kind of powder I need for ice dyeing?

      You are welcome, I am glad it was helpful to you. As for the tee I am wearing in this video, I call it an Over Dye ... I start with an already tie-dyed tee instead of a white one ... I soak it is soda ash, but I use a separate basin as some dye can leach out while soaking, so I use just enough to cover the tee ...
      Anyways, then I tie the tee up, in this case I went with the RonStar fold and tied with sinew as it will 'block' the dyes from reaching parts of the tee... with a white tee you get white lines, but with a dyed tee, you get colorful lines ... this is a way that I 'Save' a tee that did not turn out as I had hoped... and it can give new life to an old tee... the one I am wearing in the video was tie-dyed a few years ago, and I wore it that way for a while ... then I did an Over-Dye on it and loved it even more

    This was amazing to watch. So educating. I thank you. I do have a question. When folding a shirt in half, there are the two different ways. 1 just folding the shirt in half 2 pulling the sleeve threw the shirt to the other sleeve. If I pleated them the same design, would there be a difference? I know you said #2 was more symmetrical and you need to make sure to penetrate your dye to make sure it goes threw. But would the design in the end be different or the same. Lol.

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, the design would be the same ... the only difference may be in the side to side symmetry if you do not get you dye saturation good ...
      I know a lot of dyers who just fold in half, like Jeremy Strebel.... you can see from his reveals that he just opens the tee up and the design looks awesome.... but he also has years of practice applying dyes evenly top and bottom ...
      tucking one sleeve into the other is a way a beginning dyer can pull off a nice symmetrical tee
      something like the spider design is a prime example of seeing the symmetry : th-cam.com/video/KzHkpmmRJCE/w-d-xo.html

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  ปีที่แล้ว

      yes you can... any cotton tee that is light in color can have darker colors added to it ... sometimes you need to stick with the color scheme of the tee... like if I had a light blue tee, I would add darker blues, purple or green to it, or even yellow as that could give a bit of green tones... but I would not put orange on it unless I wanted some brown tones ... but with grey, you can add any color, the grey may tint it some, but the colors show through
      sometimes I will start with a tie-dyed tee, tie it up with sinew (sinew blocks the dye from reaching the tied areas when tied tight enough) and then I dye it black... I call it an over dye : th-cam.com/video/CPI_23w6JkY/w-d-xo.html
      other times I will start with a colored tee, or a tie-dye tee and remove color from it and then add some back in ... here is a pair of pants I did :th-cam.com/video/nr-f7K82lmE/w-d-xo.html
      and here is my full discharge playlist in case it helps : th-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuqUum7wx4njWkcy_HI10P-o.html

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      for most folds, I prefer to have my tee be slightly damp, as I feel like the dye soaks in good... BUT, if I am doing a mandala that has many layers, or I tied with sinew, then I usually let the tee dry out before I dye it as the dry fabric will help make sure the layers of the design get well saturated if I add enough dye to it... but when I let it dry out, I will lightly spray the tops of the fold with soda sh as this helps the dye to soak in rather than just roll off the tee .... BUT, everyone does it differently, so maybe try both ways and see which you prefer

  • @donnabiven8510
    @donnabiven8510 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Can I ask here? When you say use distilled water if your home has Hard Water,
    Do you mean to use distilled water when I mix the dye? Or mix soda ash with water?
    I am so new to 😢this.
    I read online that soda ash helps hard water, to add it to your wash,
    But in tie dye that would be bad right? Don’t wash the procion dyes in soda ash, right?
    Thank you
    If or when I mess up I take all the blame.
    😂😂😂😂

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not had any issues using tap water to mix my dyes, but I know some people have hard water and I see that they use Distilled water to mix their dyes with ... so if you are having issue with your dye colors not being right, then you can try mixing the dyeing with distilled water instead of tap water ...
      and yes, the soda ash is what activates these dyes ... so if you add soda sh to your wash water, some dye may leach out of the tie-dye, activate and then re-bond with the tees, making them look 'muddy' ... many laundry detergents have soda sh in them, this is why I use Synthrapol Soap to wash out my tie-dye with (some dyers use Blue Dawn Dish Soap as it to is pH neutral) ✌🏻💚🙏
      here is more info on tie-dye in case it helps :
      Hello and Welcome to the Wonderful World of Tie-Dye ....
      I use Procion Dyes I pre wash and pre soak the cotton tees in a Soda Ash solution, this raises the pH level of the cotton which activates the Procion Dyes (sources listed below) and causes a chemical bond to form between the cotton fibers and the Procion Dyes. (Procion Dyes work on other natural fibers as well like : Bamboo, Hemp, Linen, Rayon, and even silk, but I use a slightly different process for silk)
      I have a ton of videos that are sorted into many different playlists so be sure to explore …

      I have put a bunch of videos into one Playlist to help get you started with an overview of Tie-Dye, and then how to mix the Dyes, mix or make Soda Ash, Batch the tees (let the dyes set up so the bonding can happen), and the Rinse/Wash Out Process...
      Also, I have many videos on the basic folds and various ways of dyeing the cotton tees or tapestries ... Have fun exploring and I wish you success on your Tie-Dye Journey, Oh and I recommend taking photos of your work so you can look back and see how far you have come as this is an art that you will need to practice, but it pays off with getting better each time you do it .....
      This art can be quite addictive, you have been warned lol 😉

I started with an already tie-dyed tee, I tied it up with a RonStar design using Sinew and tied it very tightly... the sinew blocks the dye for reaching parts of the tee... then I dye it with black dye ... the parts where the dye did not reach(the original tie-dye) then show through ... here is a video on how I did it : th-cam.com/video/CPI_23w6JkY/w-d-xo.html

      I do not know what colors were used for his tee... I only saw it from looking up photos after you mentioned his tee ..... but when I want to darken my Yellow, I add a couple drops of either orange or fuchsia (or, you can try Oxblood red, I just have not used it myself) to it and then test a drop on white paper towel to get an idea of the shade

    Do you always start with your shirts inside out?

      almost always... it has just become a habit ... a few reasons why :
      1. I can see the hems when I am folding in half or centering the tee
      2. Sometimes the dyes do not dissolve completely and the tiny specks of dye can leave tiny spots on the tee, these will be on the inside of the tee
      3. I use washable markers, but in the past, I had a couple lines that did not wash out, if that happens again, then these lines will be on the inside of the tees
      so no major reason, just some old habits... I encourage others to find what works best for them and go with it ✌🏻
