This is why I happily pay for patterns because this is a lot of knowledge! Lol

Making patterns has aged me. True story.

    Great advice! Thank you!
For seam allowances I have my actions ready with offset path 😊

Math is best taught through sewing and cooking! You made this easy to understand--and as always, entertaining! 🙂

Hmm. Never thought this to be an issue.
But that might be because I'm used to European patterns which tend to not include the seam allowance (add to your own taste).
So I think construction along the seam line, not the final piece size with seam allowance.
Which I would recommend anyhow, as it prevents such circle-calculations like in this example - first remove 4x seam allowance to get it to fit, and then rounding here and there, and then add 2x2 so... the same 4x the seam allowance back again... ending up with the same over all gusset length we're started of with - just with some compounding rounding errors adding up to 24.25 instead of 24.1462.
Which is a bit of a head scratcher if we first learn the gusset needs to be smaller than the circumference of the pattern piece, and the pieces to cut and then end up to 0.1038 in longer.
Why not just construct along the seam line and when cutting the pieces add the allowance where needed - so no matter if your gusset is 2 pieces like here, or needs to be 3 pieces because the lower gusset is to long to being cut in one piece, or 6 because the bottom and top should be another color than the sides.. it will always be the right size.

This was super helpful! I've been wondering how to figure this out!

Did you multiply the seam allowance by 4 because there were 4 corners to the shape you were making the gusset for? Or would you use the same formula regardless of the shape? (What if the shape you’re making the gusset for was a circle?)

By 4 because of the sides being sewn - for the circle the formula worked there too. I used it when I designed the Doufflay!

Great video, love you , thank you for this. The only comment I have you only explain inches and not mm or cm to a target user from all over the world

I’ll try to be better about this in the future! I am American, so the Imperial system is what I learned and know best.

Does the shape you have in Illustrator include seam allowances already?

Love your video! I saw a post on your facebook page about 3d pocket (on backpack) and you talk about making a YT video how to make these type of pocket but I don't find it here 😅 can you help me? Thank you!

Oh! I haven't made it yet that's all. I am going to be doing a video on the Convention Raider's updates to make the pocket easier to install and it will be the same technique.
