2008 C1/107/Aygo Gearbox oil change

- In this episode, I change the gearbox oil on my 2008 Citroen C1 petrol. I made a couple of mistakes on this one, particularly missing the catch can when draining the oil lol. I also used a semi-synthetic oil rather than a fully synthetic oil. For that reason, I'll drain and fill the oil again in a few months - I'll use the semi-synthetic oil as a flushing oil and allow it to clean some of the deposits that will have inevitably built up over the years.

Aluminum Washers Gasket 18x24mm, thinness 2mm will fit. ((Febi 22149 is 1,5mm))

Good, informative video! My 2010 Aygo has had what I assumed was a progressively moaning wheel bearing, driving me crazy recently, so I checked to see which corner was the culprit, and of course all seem fine...no roughness or wear at all.
So as a precaution tomorrow I'll change the oil, but it's also booked for a test on a lift on Friday.
Embarrassing if it's a low oil level in the gearbox but it's not been leaking....
The noise starts at around 40kph as a moan, which gets louder with speed, and sometimes goes into a wahwahwah noise...
I had something similar on one of my older cars once. Turns out it was the universal joint on its way out. The gearbox and bearings were fine.
My fiat brava did same was gearbox shaft failure
Petite suggestion, quand je vidange la boîte je débloque le bouchon de remplissage mais je le resserre légèrement pour éviter la grosse giclée d'huile au moment de la vidange. Bonne vidéo 👍🏻

I’m not actually sure tbh, it’s been a long time since I did the job. IIRC, it’s a 17mm socket for the drain plug, I could be wrong though. No idea on the size of the washer either! I should probably do this job again soon 🤔

I can't imagine there's not much that can go wrong with a manual transmission even if you did use semi synthetic? Personally though I'd rather use better oil when it lasts a long time. Not sure if it's bad but my Aygo has done 90,000 miles and has the original gearbox oil xD. I'll have to look into doing it.
Honestly Michael, I just did it for the sake of the channel! I don’t suppose an oil change would hurt it any, but the gearbox was running just fine before I changed the oil. Since this video, I’ve changed it again and used fully synthetic.
About as easy as it could possibly be really, . Did the slightly thicker oil slow down the gear change feel?
It’s the correct thickness, it’s just semi synthetic instead of fully synthetic. The gear changes feel the same, but I know now that it’s got fresh oil in it. In an upcoming video, I install a new gear knob and take the sloppiness out of the shifts.
Great video, thanks for sharing. Question; i have an auto 107 and the clutch slips quite a bit especially in the first few miles. Before I take it to my local garage for a clutch change could this oil change make any difference?
There's no harm in changing the oil, its not difficult or expensive to do and if it solves the problem, then that's great! If it doesn't solve the problem, it sounds like the clutch may well be on its way out. Does it beep at you at any point?
@@DABDIY thanks for responding, yes it bleeps three times when accelerating....weirdly it bleeped less when we filled with fuel....annoyingly my daughter has her test tomorrow and just want to disengage the bleeping before I take it to my local garage, any ideas on that front?
IIRC, beeping from an automatic means the clutch is on is way out. My recommendation would be to post in the City Bug Club on Facebook and ask the question there. I’m not too experienced with automatics.
Do you know the size of the drainplugs? I'd like to replace those as they are rusty and want to buy them before I take them out so I am not able to go to the shop to buy them as I don't wannaa leavee my car on jackstands.

It is the same as for the automatic gearbox, have you any knowledge of that..? Just bought one for my wife an when its cold i get some shocks from the gearbox..
I’ve never had the opportunity to play with an auto box, but from what I understand, it’s the same gearbox. Jack yours up and take a look, see if it looks the same.
Hi Stefan, the "automatic" gearbox on C1,107,Aygo is a manual one driven by electrical actuators, so a part from this detail, the mechanics it's the same
Did your oil change resolved the cold shocks ?
Yes the same. But obviously use automatic gear box oil

I have no idea, it was just a length of spare hose that I had lying around in my shed.

How much gearbox oil does the Aygo require?
IIRC, 1.7 L. It should be the same as shown in the video.
I dont believe you did balls it up. Draining oil can be a bit of a lottery as to where it will expel to.
That’s a valid point. I’m usually better than that though, if anything, I was a bit disappointed in myself lol
Do you know what size washers these take?
I don’t, I’m sorry. I didn’t measure it when doing the job, i just offered up the old washer to a bunch of new ones I had in a box and chose the right one. I wish I’d have measured it tbh.
The gears are a bit hard on my 107 and reverse sometimes scratches. Could a change of oil solve this?

did changing the oil help you? I have the same problem in my Aygo and I don't know if it's the pump or the clutch.
@Talion-Nox changing the oil made the gear changes smoother, but it might not be the whole cause of the problem. It’s worth considering changing the clutch or adjusting the clutch cable if changing the oil doesn’t resolve your problem.
roughly what size of pipe would I need to fill the gearbox back up? cheers
The fill port is quite big, so I went for anything that fits the bottom of my funnel tbh.

Yes. The automatic is the exact same gearbox, but it has some electronic equipment to change gears for you. They even have the same clutch system.

Yes, it’s the exact same gearbox. The gearbox oil I use in this video will be fine, but use fully synthetic.

what size coper washer did you use mate
Off the top of my head, I can’t remember. I opened a box of washers and found one the same size, I didn’t actually measure it.

It really is vague! It assumes a base level of knowledge though. Their museum isn’t far from where I work, I might nip in and go have a word 😅

If memory serves me correct, it’s either a 19 or 22mm washer. You can pick them up from your local motor factor.
