    NO NO NO NO NO!! Don't use an air line to blow the brake dust off - it blows clouds of it into the air and you might end up breathing it in.
    Use brake cleaner to wash it off and put a tray or cloth down on your drive to protect it. Layers of newspaper are even better, you can throw them in the bin when finished and they've dried.

    A nice easy way to loosen a drum. You have two threaded holes in the drum opposite each other. If I remember right it’s a 10mm thread or 8mm. Get two pins around 35mm length and screw them into the holes this puts pressure onto the hub and your drum will come off easily. I keep my bolts safe in my tool box if I should ever need to use the pins again. Saves you trying to force the drum off with a screwdriver.

    Don't use compressed air on dry dust from the brake. very bad for you. Use some brakecleaner first and wear a mask if you can, don't breathe it in!

    The two other holes in the drum are for screwing two bolts into the push the drum off. In the Haynes manual. If you had one..

    Another good one! I didn't know it was that easy to do a check-up so now i will probably give it a try when i change to winter tires :)

      Easy peasy to check and clean but a different ball game if you have to disassemble them to change the shoes. See my Polo tutorial for a demo

    The handbrake should work on both shoes at the same time. The shoe that is worn more is the 'leading' shoe. It wears faster because it does more work than the 'trailing' shoe when the car is moving forwards.

    to remove the drum use 2 8 mm screws which screw onto the drum

  • @JohnPlant90
    @JohnPlant90 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Don't tighten that screw so much! Apply Coppaslip to it. Bear in mind the wheel clamps the drum to the axle - that scew doesn't need to be tight.

      Keep copper grease well away from the brakes. Use Ceratec or lithium moly grease. I explain why in my slider pins video.

      @@CycloneCyd - Apples and oranges... Just saying! You're both right and you're both talking about different things! And yes a thin copper grease film is the ideal for that particular bolt. That should be pretty much hand tight. No need to go all ape on it. ;-)

    If like me you have difficulty getting the wheel off because it's corroded onto the hub, I used wd40 then a crow bar through the holes in the wheel onto the break drum to gently prise it off working gradually all the way round...guess I should carry a crowbar in the car just incase I get a puncture.

    Hey my rear brakes are binding (sticking), a short drive usually fixes it but in the morning i can hear them squeaking, do you think just cleaning them with some brake cleaner will help?

    • @fixanddrive
      @fixanddrive  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but make sure you don't inhale the stuff when the spray pumps out pressure. It was my mistake in the video to clean it with pressured air. Because the dust is VERY dangerous to inhale.I didn't know it then.

    For gods sake man, please oh please, cut the ****** noise (or music). I need to be able to concentrate on the instructions; which I can't do with that row going-on continuously. Don't misunderstand me, it's great that you posted this (if it weren't for the noise on-top), and I thank you for that, but I'm giving up.

      @@Duffloop That's too much trouble to do, and the family are already disturbed immediately at the very beginning before one is able to slowly turn the noise down. Anyway, on an instructional video there's absolutely no call whatsoever for music or noise; only a commentary, if there is one. One needs to concentrate on the video, nothing else.
