I’ve heard that majority of people who make jokes and are funny, are those who are depressed the most, he would say a joke to break the silence to stop thinking about his backstory
I always saw Robin Williams as a tormented soul, someone who had been through a lot, and many times wondered what that could have been. When he passed away, all I learned was that I was right. What always bothered me was when something tragic would happen, and then someone jokes about it. I am not bothered by the person, but rather everyone else who suddenly thinks this jokester is a monster and focuses their own hate towards them. Clearly trying to find humor out of a tragedy is a coping mechanism, and now they have to deal with all the additional social backlash on top of that!
Is that true. I make jokes constantly and never connected it to what’s inside. I definitely have a tragic backstory. But I didn’t know that was why I joke sooo much
Wow...Talk about a tragic childhood. No wonder Donkey’s such a clingy chatterbox. He never got a chance to just be himself or have a real friend who didn’t use & abuse him as a foal. Luckily, he finally found someone who truly loved him for who he was along with his (many) quirks. Although often annoyed, Shrek appreciates Donkey’s friendship because they were both outcasts in a “picturesque” world that had their “place” written down, one that they decided not to follow. Really glad Donkey found his own happily ever after.
I do also think Shrek eventually accepted donkey as a friend despite the latter being obnoxious, and the latter was one of the first and few living Sentient beings that wasn't afraid of the former and actually liked him.
I think Donkey's character might be based on a story called the stubborn donkey there is even a line in the first movie where he's pleading with the lady trying to sell him to give him another chance saying "I'll never be stubborn again!".
Maybe that's the reason why Donkey is always so cheerful and cracking a joke - being an overall lukewarm individual He had Been rejected and treated as an outcast to a glorified farm pet at best
So that's why Donkey was able to take Shrek's initial disinterest towards him well, the ogre was the first creature to actually help the poor donkey out and wasn't outright nasty to him either.
I find it very admirable how in spite of all the abuse and torment Donkey went he’s still a very caring, loyal, friendly and humorous soul. I mean I could I could say the same thing about a lot of characters who in spite of difficult backgrounds and circumstances still end up being really good people... or animals or whatever
"Then this fool went off and had a party, and he had all of the guests trying to pin the tail on me! Then they all got DRUNK and started beating me with a stick going "PINATA, PINATA!!!" I feel bad because I know that line is cruel...but the way Eddie Murphy says it I can't stop laughing.
Try not to laugh because I’ve had a similar experience as a human trafficking survivor being called a piñata while being molested by drunk men who were holding me upside down by one leg when I was about 6 yrs old. People can be pretty cruel so it’s important to be kind to someone who shared a story of brutality done to them by saying “wow that must have been hard. I’m so glad you survived that” rather than laughing. Laughing just makes us feel that you approve of the brutality and that you hate us.

It was hinted that whomever drinks the potion would get a happily ever after with their true love. Ok here’s a fake biological fiction based answer. Reptiles can lay unfertilized eggs and have them hatch. For example the whip tail lizard species is only made up of females because all the males died as the species was going extinct but the females continued laying eggs and hatching more females. When reptiles lay unfertilized eggs, the babies that hatch are always are female. So let’s say dragon lay a bunch of unfertilized eggs that could have hatched on their own to be a bunch of female dragons. Now egg shells are not solid. Whether they are leathery like reptile eggs or hard like bird eggs, water and moisture can get into eggs. If eggs get too wet , the babies inside can actually die. Which is why the parent has to sit on the eggs, keeping them warm and dry until they are hatched. Now for the fiction part: So what if Donkey came along and ejaculated on the eggs, maybe his sperm went through the egg shell to fertilize the eggs making it possible for them to be both male and donkey-dragon hybrids. This would be a type of external fertilization. Fish do external fertilization. When fish go to spawning grounds, the males and the females do a sort of mating dance where they run each other’s bodies and then they squirt out eggs and sperms at the same time in the same location in the water, the eggs and sperms meet, and the eggs get fertilized and fall to the river bottom where they eventually hatch and form fry (the term used for baby fish). So I think that they could have used external fertilization, like fish do. :) seems like internal fertilization like most mammals and reptiles actually use would kind of be impossible for them. Or they could have fertilizated the eggs using internal fertilization like salamanders do, which involves the male salamander doing a dance and then laying a package of his sperm on the ground. If the female likes his dance, she goes over to the package of sperm and puts it inside of herself using her legs which then fertilized her eggs internally, and she lays them after they have been fertilized:)yay wildlife biology :)

My personal theory is that it's not just the disappearance of Shrek that led to that future, but also the fact that Rumpelstiltskin retains his memories, inclining him to hate all the ogres or to ruin Shrek's old friends' lifes somehow. But I'd like to hear your ideas in a video too.

It’s possible that the reason the witches were able to alter him in the way suggested in this video is because Donkey’s father was one of the transformed boys from Pinocchio. And if unicorns can talk in Shrek, it could be that the unicorn heritage came from his mother’s side. He does indicate that his mother can speak as well.
Actually I think I got the answer for you in which fairy tale Donkey has to have come from. The "Town Musicians of Bremen" (German: Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten) is a popular German fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm and published in Grimms' Fairy Tales in 1819 (KHM 27).[1] It tells the story of four aging domestic animals, who after a lifetime of hard work are neglected and mistreated by their former masters. Eventually, they decide to run away and become town musicians in the city of Bremen. Contrary to the story's title the characters never arrive in Bremen, as they succeed in tricking and scaring off a band of robbers, capturing their spoils, and moving into their house. The Town Musicians of Bremen is a story of Aarne-Thompson Type 130 ("Outcast animals find a new home").[1] The Brothers Grimm first published this tale in the second edition of Kinder- und Hausmärchen in 1819, based on the account of the German storyteller Dorothea Viehmann (1755-1815).[1] In the story, a donkey, a dog, a cat, and a rooster (or hen), all past their prime years in life and usefulness on their respective farms, were soon to be discarded or mistreated by their masters. One by one, they leave their homes and set out together. They decide to go to Bremen, known for its freedom, to live without owners and become musicians there ("Something better than death we can find anywhere"). On the way to Bremen, they see a lighted cottage; they look inside and see four robbers enjoying their ill-gotten gains. Standing on each other's backs, they decide to scare the robbers away by making a din; the men run for their lives, not knowing what the strange sound is. The animals take possession of the house, eat a good meal, and settle in for the evening. Later that night, the robbers return and send one of their members in to investigate. He sees the Cat's eyes shining in the darkness and the robber thinks he is seeing the coals of the fire. He reaches over to light his candle. Things happen in quick succession; the Cat scratches his face with her claws, the Dog bites him on the leg, the Donkey kicks him with his hooves, and the Rooster crows and chases him out the door, screaming. He tells his companions that he was beset by a horrible witch who had scratched him with her long fingernails (the Cat), a man who has a knife (the Dog), a black monster who had hit him with a club (the Donkey), and worst of all, the judge who had screamed from the rooftop (the Rooster). The robbers abandon the cottage to the strange creatures who have taken it, where the animals live happily for the rest of their days. In the original version of this story, which dates from the twelfth century, the robbers are a bear, a lion, and a wolf, all animals featured in heraldric devices. When the donkey and his friends arrive in Bremen, the townsfolk applaud them for having rid the district of the terrible beasts. An alternate version involves the animals' master(s) being deprived of his livelihood (because the thieves stole his money and/or destroyed his farm or mill) and having to send his animals away, unable to take care of them any further. After the animals dispatch the thieves, they take the ill-gotten gains back to their master so he can rebuild. Other versions involve at least one wild, non-livestock animal, such as a lizard, helping the domestic animals out in dispatching the thieves.[2] So I'm pretty sure that's where Donkey fits into fairy tales. I've thought of that since the first movie came out.
I also thought that before that Donkey could be from the Bremen town musicians. It would explain why he sings so much in the movies (for which there isn't really given any other explanation). Although we never see the other animals from the town musicians, but maybe they just disbanded. And as someone who actually lives near the city of Bremen in Germany where the fairytale originates from, it feels kind of cool to have a fairytale from a local nearby city featured in an internationally successfull american franchise. Same with the pied piper featured in the fourth movie, which also originates from the town Hameln which is in the same area of Germany as Bremen as well.
Stephanie Carsten Maybe he is descended from a half-human half-unicorn hybrid, which is what a centaur is. Then this “centaur” had descendants that slowly evolved back into humans, until Donkey was born.
More specifically I think donkey is one of the musicians of berman, which inculded a donkey, himself, a cat, a dog, and a chicken who through his singing got the group together while he was McDonald.
Would you consider analyzing Tigress and Po's behavioral evolution throughout the movies? And maybe make prediction for Kung Fu Panda 4 and give your opinion on TigressXPo?
i think the potion changed donkey into ah horse is because his perspective had change to such, from the start of him becoming ah donkey he wanted to be human, but hes been ah donkey ah donkey for so long that it changed his mind and he wanted to be ah handsome horse instead.
MY theory is he's supposed to be one of the main characters from the story the Bremerton musicians, in which a group of animals, one of which is a donkey, decide to form a band and make music. This would also explain why Donkey knows so many songs--he wanted to be a musician.
Donkey and Po from Kung fu Panda sound a bit similar. Both Po and Donkey enjoyed the new company despite said company being negative at first because both knew they going back to their old lives was worse.
My take on donkey is that he is a runaway donkey. From the movie Pinocchio, one of the donkeys that didn’t transform correctly and therefore were of no use. It would make sense knowing that donkey is very childlike in his character.
wow when all the pieces are put together throughout the films we really do see Donkey's back story makes sense I do think that the witches giving him a voice is a big thing setting him apart from his family of donkeys........ hang on unicorns are magical creatures so would that mean they could talk. so maybe some of the donkey offspring inherited voices and in shark the 3rd he transforms into a white stallion which is pretty close to a unicorn.......mind blown
I always thought he was just the donkey from the tale of the Town Musicians of Bremen... The one where a Donkey, a Dog, a Cat and a Chicken decide to escape their farms and form a band.
I think Donkey could be Pinocchio's friend (Lampwick), the one he couldn't save. There's a theory that Donkey could be from Pinocchio, as one of the donkey-boys from Pleasure Island, just all grown up: Donkey doesn’t come from any commonly-known story. “Pinocchio” is the only fairytale that features talking donkeys, so it would give our Donkey a plausible backstory. Since Donkey and Pinocchio are both getting turned in during the same scene, this means they exist in the same world. (More evidence to support the first point.) Donkey makes a comment in “Shrek the Third” about having haunting flashbacks of swirlies and wedgies. (Maybe he was a real boy at one point in his life?) In the same film, when Puss and Donkey switch bodies, Puss can’t seem to stop hee-hawing. Donkey then explains “You’ll learn to control that.” This scene resembles a part in Pinocchio where our puppet pal begins laughing so much, he begins to hee-haw.
Awesome video!!! I defenently respect your opinion :) my opinion is that Donkey was a Plesure Island Donkey, as he did state he did wear clothes during the scene in the 3rd movie when they were at the school, and he looks alot like the donkeys from Plesure Island, so in my opinion Donkey was a Plesure Island Donkey :) and seeing the good nature in Donkey, once he escaped, he might of tried to tell everyone about the Plesure Island sceam, but since there were plenty of other animals in that world that can talk, nobody would believe him :,( speaking of Pinocchio, there is a cat sidekick to the fox and Figaro the cat Gepeto has, and one cat is sentient and one is not? Which is a question that I just got, why are some cats sentient in the Pinocchio world and others not?
Checks out... Except with the fact he comes from a long line of talking Donkeys. But maybe not all of them get that trait? And the Witches took a special interest because they knew his background? That would round out the theory a bit.
I think I remember hearing from somewhere that that he was from a fairytale about a lonely old lady who wished for someone to talk to and her wish came true when she discovered that her donkey could speak (or something along those lines).
There is some reference to Donkey especially from the naughty boys turned to donkeys in the Disney Movie Pinocchio, When Donkey tells the old women abot to sell him, I never be stubborn again😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I hope you do a video about Prince Eric's full story. Because I want to know how many princesses from different kingdoms beyond the "princess of Glowerhaven", Prince Eric met and has turned down on them before falling in love for Princess Ariel!
Can you do a video about Mulan's full story? Because I want to know more about her childhood and her struggle to find her destiny in the chinese society, and know how Mulan's father got injuried in a war against the Huns.
It’s possible that the witches turned Donkey in to a human at one point for kicks and giggles, wich would explain why and how Donkey revived we goes and swirlies.
Can you a video about Li Shang's full story? Because I want to know much was his dedication and training through his whole life to become a great General of Imperial Chinese Army like his father, General Li.
I think one possible fairytale Donkey could come from is the Bremen town musicians. It is a fairytale from the brothers Grimm, and it would explain why Donkey likes to sing so much. I know this fairytale because I actually live near the city of Bremen in Germany in which it is set. It is about four animals (a donkey, a dog, a cat and a rooster) wanting to become town musicians and they are famously portrayed as standing on top of each others back. Although we never see the other three animals in the Shrek movies, it would actually be a good explanation to why Donkey is so musical and sings so much, since there isn't really any other explanation for it. The fairytale of the pied piper which was featured in the fourth Shrek movie actually originates from the town of Hameln in Germany which is close to Bremen as well. As a german this was quite cool to see a fairytale from a close local town featured in an internationally successful american franchise.
It's quite the theory towards Donkey's past. While it's pretty informative, I wouldn't find Swamp Talk a reliable source as it's got a ton of inconsistent continuity and how it shows a majority of deceased villains still alive. And for Donkey being once a human, it's intriguing yet far-fetched. And a witch turning him into a donkey, keep in mind that was an original concept that never materialized in the actual movie or canon. Basically, I wouldn't be surprised if that old lady was Old MacDonald's wife, is MacDonald even had one in the actual nursery rhyme. Finally, if I were to theorize his origin, I'd follow the details in the main movies and specials that are connected to the main canon.
Most of the peoplethay did this kind of video thought he came from Toy Land (I refuse, as an Italian, to call it with its fake name that disney gave it), Matpat thought of The Donkey fairy tale. But I'm seriously the only one to made the connection between Donkey, whose favorite pass time is sing, and the donkey from the Bremen Musicians?

Other versions involve at least one wild, non-livestock animal, such as a lizard, helping the domestic animals out in dispatching the thieves.[2]
So I'm pretty sure that's where Donkey fits into fairy tales.
Coming out of quarantine be like:
"I like that boulder! That is a niiiiiiiiiice bOuLdEr!"
th-cam.com/video/d_XVVCVHGlQ/w-d-xo.html
Donkey is genuinely great! Great video!
Donkey will always be one of my favorite Dreamworks sidekicks
I am playing Donkey in Sammy Dammy Studio’s Shrek Roleplay.
I wonder how excited Isaac was when he heard Disney+ was a thing. XD
Donkey : CAKE!, EVERYONE LIKES CAKE.
Ok, how could he be a boy cursed into being a donkey, if he's part unicorn?
Stephanie Carsten Maybe he is descended from a half-human half-unicorn hybrid, which is what a centaur is. Then this “centaur” had descendants that slowly evolved back into humans, until Donkey was born.
More specifically I think donkey is one of the musicians of berman, which inculded a donkey, himself, a cat, a dog, and a chicken who through his singing got the group together while he was McDonald.
Actually Matpat did a theory about Donkey being one of the kids who was tricked by the coachman.
true, that's why it's debatable now
I have another theory what if the fairy godmother own the evil Island too experiments boys into donkeys and the coachman true name is Kyle!
If donkey was a human wouldn't Pinocchio recognize him when he was human and see him turn into a donkey.
Would you consider analyzing Tigress and Po's behavioral evolution throughout the movies? And maybe make prediction for Kung Fu Panda 4 and give your opinion on TigressXPo?
His experience oddly sounds an awful lot like depersonalization
Very convincing... but I still kinda like the idea that he was a boy from Pleasure Island better.
i think the potion changed donkey into ah horse is because his perspective had change to such, from the start of him becoming ah donkey he wanted to be human, but hes been ah donkey ah donkey for so long that it changed his mind and he wanted to be ah handsome horse instead.
MY theory is he's supposed to be one of the main characters from the story the Bremerton musicians, in which a group of animals, one of which is a donkey, decide to form a band and make music.
This would also explain why Donkey knows so many songs--he wanted to be a musician.
Donkey should have gotten his own origin movie.
Well it’s been announced the possibilities of a donkey spin off. Maybe that could be it
Donkey and Po from Kung fu Panda sound a bit similar.
Good theory. As a kid I always assumed he only had the old lady as an owner.
When I was a kid I used to think donkey was related to the bible story "billiam and his talking donkey"
Troper H'ghar Balaam
Jack from jack and the beanstalk actually traded an old cow for the beans
wow when all the pieces are put together throughout the films we really do see Donkey's back story makes sense I do think that the witches giving him a voice is a big thing setting him apart from his family of donkeys........ hang on unicorns are magical creatures so would that mean they could talk. so maybe some of the donkey offspring inherited voices and in shark the 3rd he transforms into a white stallion which is pretty close to a unicorn.......mind blown
OMG I always thought you'd make a video about Donkeys backstory and here it is I'm impressed it's just like how I imagined 👌👌
I always thought Donkey was just a donkey but now listening to his backstory I feel bad for donkey.
There's a theory that Donkey could be from Pinocchio, as one of the donkey-boys from Pleasure Island, just all grown up:
Donkey doesn’t come from any commonly-known story. “Pinocchio” is the only fairytale that features talking donkeys, so it would give our Donkey a plausible backstory.
Since Donkey and Pinocchio are both getting turned in during the same scene, this means they exist in the same world. (More evidence to support the first point.)
Donkey makes a comment in “Shrek the Third” about having haunting flashbacks of swirlies and wedgies. (Maybe he was a real boy at one point in his life?)
In the same film, when Puss and Donkey switch bodies, Puss can’t seem to stop hee-hawing.
What do you think happened to donkey's wife dragon after he took the potion?
Google claims she turned into a talking Pegasus which is strange since she doesn't speak as a dragon
Checks out... Except with the fact he comes from a long line of talking Donkeys. But maybe not all of them get that trait? And the Witches took a special interest because they knew his background? That would round out the theory a bit.
Poor donkey going through animal abuse. If donkey was my pet i'd treat him with and respect like all living things.
I think I remember hearing from somewhere that that he was from a fairytale about a lonely old lady who wished for someone to talk to and her wish came true when she discovered that her donkey could speak (or something along those lines).
Maybe that's why he sings as they travel because the witches forced him to before he met Shrek
I always headcanon'd that Donkey was from this universe's version of Bremen Town Musicians.
Donkey: you go deal with the dragon and I deal with the stairs
There is some reference to Donkey especially from the naughty boys turned to donkeys in the Disney Movie Pinocchio, When Donkey tells the old women abot to sell him, I never be stubborn again😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I hope you do a video about Prince Eric's full story. Because I want to know how many princesses from different kingdoms beyond the "princess of Glowerhaven", Prince Eric met and has turned down on them before falling in love for Princess Ariel!
I’m early for once the last the time I was this early was never !🤣☹️
Wow I just danced out of exitment 😂
7:27 Donkey: Let's just say some things are better left unsaid and leave it at that.
I believe he's the donkey from Jack in the beanstalk
Who else loved Kermit in the background?
Just me? ... okay
Can you do a video about Mulan's full story? Because I want to know more about her childhood and her struggle to find her destiny in the chinese society, and know how Mulan's father got injuried in a war against the Huns.
Explain dragon's backstory and the dronkies
I had the absolute biggest throwback at the mention of the Shrek Kareoke Dance Party
Shrek: What are you doing in my swamp???
might have forgotten he was a boy. It could've been so long ago he forced himself to try to forget it.
Wotso 2:30 I realize too that Donkey is a human boy from Pinocchio to Pleasure Island
They Should have made a movie about Donkey
is that why donkey seems like such a good friend?
"The number of talking mammals has reached an all-time high"...hold up, that includes humans too XD
I think Donkey is the same donkey from the old story, “The Town Musicians of Bremen.” This might also explain Donkey’s love for singing.
I love your videos! May I make a suggestion? Are you considering to put subtitles for your hearing impaired audience?
You the best TH-camr and your videos their amazing This is what keeps me not bored from Staying home 🤩👍😎
What if Donkey is a decendant of the original Donkeys that went to Pleasure Island?
These DreamWorks stories are the greatest. Thank you
Damn that is sad poor Donkey and Shrek being a total badass
Thank you thank you for this video I love donkey
Most of the peoplethay did this kind of video thought he came from Toy Land (I refuse, as an Italian, to call it with its fake name that disney gave it), Matpat thought of The Donkey fairy tale. But I'm seriously the only one to made the connection between Donkey, whose favorite pass time is sing, and the donkey from the Bremen Musicians?
Donkey: *you don't know what it's like to be considered a freak! Well...maybe you do....but that's why we gotta stick together, you gotta let me stay, please, please!*
I’m surprised when film theory was making their donkey video that they didn’t bring up swamp talk
I always headcannoned that hes the talking donkey from the bible. Always made perfect sense to me.
1) both talk 2) both just want love 3) are both abused
Donkey: i can't feel my toes, i don't have any toes 🤣
What does confuse me about him not being human earlier in life, is that he makes so many comments about things only humans would really know. Such as wearing pants, going to college, ext. Wonder where those comments come into play
I like the theory that he is lampwick from Pinocchio much better. He finally got off pleasure island! He also arrives in the film with Pinocchio.
" my momma said* xmas ain't xmas until someone cry's " a seriously true statement in my family lol 😂
