Today I want to explain why I believe King Harold may have been responsible for an ogre genocide, and if that is true, it would truly be the event that set the stage for everything else that happened in the Shrek saga thus far.

I still think fairy godmother was the actual "witch" who turned Fiona into a ogre, just so her son could someday marry her and be considered a hero, especially since perhaps the king used to like fairy, but he instead married Lillian.
there is a lot of details that can be used here to support this but it would explain Harold's story even more

It makes perfect sense. Just one thing fairy godmother would have to consider when cursing fiona. Fiona would also have to love Charming in return to "take love's true form". If she didn't, and I would be surprised if she ever did, the spell would still be on her. Love isn't something that should be forced on someone, it should come naturally, and clearly it did with Shrek and Fiona

@ Issac Carlson There is another layer I think I could add to this theory. Harold could have been told all his life as a frog that he was an ugly abomination of nature. So, when he was turned into a human, the thought of other green creatures having control over a land and being in a culture that accepts them, warts and all, could have ignited his hatred, jealousy and bias toward them. Thus, through a bit of Fairy Godmother's manipulation, he saw them as undeserving of Far Far Away and deserving of death for even existing the way they do.

It’s possible but because we know he kept his identity as the frog prince from even his wife, those so called “injuries” could have just been a cover story.
Also in the first Shrek film, Shrek scares the villagers by telling them what Ogers like to do with human. Making a coat out of their skin and making eyeball jelly for toast. So a slander campaign may not have even been necessary. Ogers may just enjoyed eating people and people were scared of them.

When I saw the title, this is what I thought:
King Harold hated ogres and commited the genocide. Maybe the witch chose Fiona’s curse specifically because of his actions: to make the thing he loved most into the very thing that he hated most…not for political control, but for retribution. (We see curses placed to that effect often).
Fairy Godmother then took advantage of his moment of weakness to propose to isolate her and begin her plot to take over Far Far Away. Fiona, also hating ogres then hated herself and was also then repulsed by Shrek…but during their time together on the adventure, she saw beauty in herself and then found the love for Shrek.
Then forcing Harold to accept all ogres as they are.

    • @Gracejkay
      @Gracejkay ปีที่แล้ว +8

He tried to get rid of shrek mostly because of the deal Harold had made with the Fairy godmother. Had she not be a factor in Harold’s “happily every after” that he was afraid would be taken from him, I don’t think Harold would’ve considered killing shrek, even if he didn’t like him. He wasn’t even a human himself, so I think under different circumstances he wouldn’t have hated Shrek

  • @deadmonk6671

An interesting theory and one that has some credence to it, if one listens carefully during the dinner in Shrek 2, one can note a level of anger towards Shrek, this may be more than just simple rage at Shrek marrying his daughter but from a history of war with his kind.
As for far far away and the kingdom itself, it might be something more, in Shrek Forever after, the Ogres seem unified under Fiona but seem to have a number of individuals of authority. So it may have been that in past the Ogres lived in tribal societies that may have fought both outsiders and each other. But unlike in the battle against Rumblestiltskin the Ogres didn't have anyone to unify them against Harolds' Crusade, and despite fighting back were unable to resist. Those that survived fled into the swamps and forests for isolation and more importantly protection.
And this tribal idea may carry on here, the Ogres "tribes" may have divided up even further for protection, staying together would mean that if attacked and defeated then they would lose everything but living alone, isolated meant that if one home is found then only one Ogre would be lost not the whole tribe.

while Harold could have gone to war with the ogres I don't think he started the genocide and was more of a generational thing and I think the kingdom always belonged to his family and could be that kingdom started out small and wanted to get bigger to keep up with the human population but they going ogre territory and drover the ogre off their land and it could be that humans outbred the ogres having more children, yes Fiona did have triplets but I think Orgres more than likely had one child at a time
so he didn't start the hatred or genocide against the ogres he just fell for it and it could be by the time he was in the Crusades that it had been going on for a long time and the ogre's population was already dindling or they spread out. in real life, the Crusades lasted for centuries so Harold was most likely a soldier in them at the end

I would argue its more like "Alright, i joined the crusades for some time, and now i had the money to make my kingdom prosperous." The crusades was less of a "Filthy pagans are controling holy land", it was more of a "Pope needs more authority in both Europe and other side of the known world(IE Middle east), and these pesky nobles waging skirmishes should go there earn our trust." I mean the crusades finally gave some peace in Catholic Europe(What i mean is that in Medieval Europe, it was common for nobles waging wars against one and other to get their property, and i dont mean like "Kingdom A vs Kingdom B", i mean "Noble from Kingdom A is challenging another noble's authority from the same country". It usually was "Noble from Kingdom A vs noble from Kingom B" because its easier to justify it.)

It sounds interesting, but I have an inquiry on that theory.
When Harold initially almost signed off his kingdom to Rumpel, he was stopped by the news that Fiona had been rescued.
In this alternative timeline, we are never told that Rumpel changed the past deeds of King Harold, but picked up where he left off in ruling Far Far Away. Therefore if Harold was responsible for the ogre genocide, and it was undone by Rumpel, it had to have happened after Fiona was rescued in the original timeline, and therefore within Shrek's lifetime.
Although we could say that Rumpel's rule forced the originally isolated ogres to band together as they had once done, so I guess I'm just spitballing here.
But why didn't Shrek know of their past when all the others apparently did?
    This is confusing. 😂😂

We saw how much she strongly value the magic and how Mirabel not receiving a gift cause everyone to worry that there was something wrong with the magic. Wouldn't put it aside her to conduct a scheme like having her other daughter to have another child in hope that one will receive a gift unlike her last grandchild.

    • @Doomzdeh
      @Doomzdeh หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Don’t forget that Abuela was anxious to have as many Gifts in the family as she could. She likely became a bit upset once Bruno disappeared, as he would no longer be able to give her grandchildren to serve the Encanto. Ergo, the current Madrigals were pressured to pick up the slack and to “keep the Miracle burning” by having multiple children.

    • @Doomzdeh
      @Doomzdeh หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@Olivia-iv8kd Why on Earth would she ever consider that? Abuela likely instituted herself as Candle Holder, as she was too old to get a Gift of her own. Given how every Madrigal child since had gotten a Gift, I honestly don’t blame her for worrying that Mirabel was a warning that the Miracle was fading.
Casita can’t directly speak with Abuela to explain things, after all. You’re looking at it through the lens of the movie, where we know what happens and can see things through a neutral and logical lens. Abuela doesn’t have that luxury.

Based on how people treat shrek, I dont think there was a war against ogres. If there was there would be plenty of people who remember it. They would remeber their friend being killed by ogre and/or themselves killing ogres. There would be people who would know how to fight ogres and are less likely to accept him in the later movies. In shrek 4, people are excited to see him. It more that they are afraid because they dont understand what ogres are like. When they learned more about what kind of person shrek is, they stopped fearing him and became more of a fan instead. It more likely that ogre arent that common so they dont know if an ogre is dangerous or not.

I like this. In fact I think it has prime fanfic or prequel material. Things that could be expanded upon. Imagine a young Harold, a humble toad begs the Godmother to help him achieve Happily Ever After, to which she agrees and thus creates the very first Happily Ever After potion, the same potion that Shrek would later use but, of course there's a catch. Godmother knows that this land she wants would be a perfect place to erect a kingdom but, the Ogres who she's prejudice against and views as beneath her are in control. We don't know how old Fairy Godmother is being a very old character perhaps as old as Merlin. It's likely Fairy Godmother craved power and knew that her magic would only allow her to get it if she used it to manipulate and control others around her, so she does. She makes the first potion herself, no factory or workers just her own magical resources and with it she gives him the ability to win his bride but, promises to return some day so that Harold will repay her for this.
I theorize that Harold's wife may in fact be the princess from the story of King Grisly-Beard from the Grimm's Fairy Tales. In it, a great king of a land Far aAway in the East had a daughter who was very beautiful, but so proud, and haughty, and conceited, that none of the princes who came to ask her in marriage was good enough for her, and she only made sport of them. (sounds an awful like our martial artist queen with a snarky attitude), But the old king was very angry when he saw how his daughter behaved, and how she ill-treated all his guests; and he vowed that, willing or unwilling, she should marry the first man, be he prince or beggar, that came to the door. In the story that's when a fiddler comes in. However in the Shrek version it's Harold. He comes in and gets his bride. Obviously he's not beggar or prince but being human alone would allow him the chance.
This far away kingdom could be what is now the center of Far Far Away in the Shrek verse a much smaller kingdom but a kingdom none the less. With the outer mountains, forests, and rivers being occupied by magical creatures that they respected well enough to leave alone. That is until Godmother sees this as an opportunity and uses her connection with the new king Harold to gain status, she uses other deals to slowly encroach on this territory. Rapunzel likely uses the witch's cabbage patch and gives it to Fairy Godmother as a location to make her potions (hence why it looks like a cottage from the front because at one point it was), Cinderella once married gave her a reputation for kindness and acceptance of all people (Cinderella was a poor servant after all), and of course Pinochio could've been an experiment that got loose from the cottage and simply never realized that she was the one who gave him life. (after all Fairy Godmother often wears shades of red and pink while in public, but wears blue or purple when doing most of her work. )

King Harold was essentially in a predicament that our best analogue for is the Nuremberg Trials:
It’s hard to separate simply following genocidal instruction from superiors, and being genocidal in personal ideology.
Either way as long as Fairy Godmother had Fiona as her pawn in the tower, she had the power to make Far Far Away a utopia in her image and completely oust the ogres.
But with the rescue taking too long and the royals being desperate to rescue their daughter from cruel fate, they were ready to sell the kingdom to Rumpledstiltskin.
Speculation of the comparison and contrast from original Far Far Away to distorted Far Far Away is that with Rumpledstiltskin in charge of the kingdom, none of what Fairy Godmother promised for the kingdom is applied.
My theory is that since Rumoledstiltskin has a knack for finding the historical threads that send things unraveling, he knew that Fairy Godmother was in charge of Far Far Away, so when the King and Queen promised control of the kingdom for Fiona’s fate, he knew that he was going to directly replace Fairy Godmother.
Fairy Godmother probably does not exist in that timeline.
If he didn’t replace Godmother from the time of her origin, he probably replaced her at a time around when she granted Harold humanhood, thus kinghood, on a few conditions.
Without Fairy Godmother around, there’s much less foothold for human society and no advanced infrastructure, since no one other than someone who could wave a magic wand could possibly take the time to make such nice cobbled streets and intricate yet unified housings.
Perhaps the kingdom only existed, there was no town at all otherwise, in order for King Harold to have a region to be the ruling “King of”.
No, scratch that, Rumpled would have replaced Fairy Godmother after Fiona was born, and not only that, but given her curse to alternate between human and ogre form.
So into the early years of Far Far Away as a kingdom. (Why make a metropolis right away if there aren’t many people to occupy or curate the buildings?) But there could certainly be time shortly after the application of that curse for Harold (Fairy Godmother) to declare war against the ogres.
RumpledStiltskin replaced Fairy Godmother before she could proposition King Harold to “prove himself” as a king, to take an army to defeat and banish the ogres. As a result, the ogres are still populous and unified.
She couldn’t do anything about it, she’s fairy-powerless if she even exists.
(I forget, did Rumoledstiltskin have a fairy wand?)
    That’s my conclusion.

I TOTALLY agree with you! I never liked the Fairy Godmother or her son in the Shrek franchise. She is a master manipulator. I believe Fairy Godmother simply took advantage of King Harold's 'happily ever after' and used him a pawn in her grand scheme. Therefore, easily manipulating into creating a perfect kingdom... in her image.

But all of the ogres that were shown in the alternative time line have appeared at the end when everything has returned to normal. Also, King Harold's prejudice against Shrek came from his own insecrurity about his past as a frog, he wanted Fiona to have a life with a regular human so she wouldn't have to go through what he had to.

I do believe that Fairy Godmother did have King Harold wage war against Ogres, as Fairy Godmother said it herself regarding her beliefs towards Ogres, “Ogres don’t live happily ever after.” But then it looks like both King Harold and Fairy Godmother were proven wrong when Shrek and Fiona came around and there.
Also, next time you do a What If, you should consider doing “What if Kiara ran away with Kovu”.

I always thought that the reason that King Harold hated Shrek (and possibly all Ogres) was because Harold was born a Frog and Ogres are known to kill Frogs in the Shrekverse. I mean, we legit see Shrek make a balloon out of a frog in the first movie. I don’t doubt that he’s eaten his fair share of frog legs while living in his Swamp.
Harold’s body may have changed, but I doubt his instincts have. He sees Shrek as a monster and as a predator.
Even so, given Harold’s hesitance and sheepishness in hiring Puss in Boots to kill Shrek, I sincerely doubt he had ever ordered an Ogre be killed before. If anything, I’d assume that small-time Lords like Farquaad primarily hire Bounty Hunters like Puss to kill Ogres so that they can take their land.

It would make sense as why Harold didn’t like Shrek and one of the many reasons why he didn’t like him (the latter being the agreement that was made with the Fairy Godmother.)
The other reason being of Fiona’s curse (her being part ogre due to her curse that was cast on her by a witch as a baby) which I think was some kind of karma/revenge for what he had done to ogres in his past.

There's one major flaw with this theory, the timeline only changed things after Shrek's birth at the most. That makes it nearly impossible for something preceding his birth to be affected by the deal with Rumple. Far far away was only deposed AFTER the events of the first Shrek movie as Fiona's parents were only willing to sign the contract because no one was able to bring Fiona back. We see that Rumple's original plan was ruined as a messenger came with news that she was rescued by someone (Shrek). This means that even if Harold had a bloody war with the Ogres before Shrek was born, it couldn't possibly have been changed by Rumple's deal. It's much more likely that Ogres did indeed just live naturally more solitary lives but Rumple is the one who wanted to cover his bases and have Ogres hunted down so that he could find both Fiona and Shrek before he could break the contract with a kiss. This led to Ogres being driven out of their homes where they would try and fight back as a group, which led to them developing a warior culture. It's an interesting theory for sure, but it ultimately doesn't work with the timeline.

Harold might have been scared of Ogres based on what he might have experienced as a frog. I mean when you look at the movies and hear the Ogres talk about the food they prepare (Shrek making rat stew and rat kabobs in the first movie, the ogre warriors trying to eat donkey in the fourth movie, along with them eating bugs, eyeballs, snakes, etc) eating frogs doesn't sound like something too far off. Or simply them making balloons out of frogs could have been enough. So him trying to wipeout Ogres might have not been as morally hard for him as we might think. I also like in the pub scene a talking frog asked if she knew Harold, nice foreshadowing if you ask me.

    1. Warcraft Orcs wanted new opponents in new world, so they devastated stormwind, and waged deadly war in the Lordaeron(Which they lost and moved to other side of the world). Or as i call it "The Great Leaders were sick of the sight of sweatshop stormwinders living much better lives than their mudhuts green leaders did. So out of envy, they ate all chlorophyl and moved on to another place to eat more chlorophyl"
    2. Visigoths in Thrace during Valens' reign. They migrated from Modern Romania to Modern Bulgaria because of famine, they wanted to live like the others. Considering Goths were the Germanics, Roman authorities treated them badly, VERY badly. Nothing new, right? But you will treat others badly if you're doing it from position of strength, which Roman authorities WERENT! What did it lead to? Battle of Adrianople in 375 AD, the battle that destroyed elite army of Eastern empire, killed Emperor Valens and started late Roman Era, the one that ended in 476 AD, by the end of Western Roman Empire.

This is definitely a good theory. Especially considering he was born a frog. If you think about it, ogres are a combination of humans and frogs which would also explain why Fiona was cursed into being an ogre.
I wonder once he was human and manipulated by Fairy Godmother even more, he could’ve really fueled on that hatred towards those that made him into what he was. The easiest target was likely ogres since they are part frog. I’m sure it went on even before Harold for humans to dislike ogres but he was the one driven to “take care” of them.
Remember that Harold made the deal with Fairy Godmother that she would gift him humanity so that Prince Charming would eventually marry Fiona. Took up until Shrek 2 to switch the teas to back out of Fairy Godmother’s deal and there isn’t anything wrong with Shrek and other ogres.
