    I totally get where you coming from on your hesitation for putting out this video I was going to do one myself but I had no idea where to start with all the different strong opinions on it. personally I dig most hybrids as long as it doesn't impede on the health of the fish. there is space for both mindsets to have their place in this hobby and whether you're for or against hybrids or pure-strain neither one should dog on the other we should appreciate the time and effort it takes for both. I DIG THE VID. STAY FUNKY

    Fully agree with you on the hybrids. In fact for me I love the different colors not just from fish to fish but love them more when a fish exhibits multiple colors in itself

    Hi Zenzo, I have always appreciated your honesty and open mindedness. In many respects, I share some of your opinions in regards to not having an open mind when it comes to hybrids. In several passages in Ad Konings book, he does discuss how it happens in the wild in the lake, especially during the rainy season when the water is high and so is the winds which in turn, muddy up the waters significantly. He simply shares that due to these conditions, the males and females sometimes can’t differentiate their own variant thus hybridization occurs. The end result is that many of us can say with 100% certainly that we have all pure strains regardless if that is our intention.

    Great topic, I would like to see discussed more, maybe with a couple of breeders pros and cons etc. There seems to be a disparity between what is ok to hybrid and what is not ok. Take shrimp, or guppies and endlers, for example. Then there is me trying to breed Muppies and Gollies.

In fact I have one in my main display tank that I bought from a local fish store. love the fish but with that being said I do appreciate the wc or F1 f2 fish that are pure. It is just preference. I see both sides. Good video. Your fish are beautiful hybrid or not.

    I have a German red shoulder German red x red shoulder he is beautiful but nuts so sometimes hybrids are a bad thing but sometimes there are a good thing I have no problem with hybrids hybridization also occurs in the wild that's why we have so many species and no one can deny obs are beautiful. Thanks Zenzo great video.

    Speaking of hybrids, I was at PetCo yesterday and they had juvenile "Red Peacock cichlids" for $25 each. They look exactly like the Jacobfreibergi I have at home that I bought from PetSmart for $6.99. I'm absolutely sure they are Jacobs. I told them that they might have the label wrong and that they were Jacobfreibergi but they insisted that they are "Red Peacocks" and that PetSmart probably had the one that I brought in the wrong tank. PetCo has really high prices on they're cichlids with blanket labels, like "Red Peacock cichlids" could cover any variety. Now I'm left not knowing what exactly my fish is. Is it a hybrid of a Jacob? How do I find out?

    • @darcandelaria
      @darcandelaria 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That happened to me, two separate tanks had Demasoni for 9$ but one tank had them for 6.99$ labeled assorted cichlids, so I told the lady and she said I don't know what any of them are or why they have different labels I just know they're african cichlids! 🙄 they know absolutely nothing! After that I didn't want to buy anything from them but I did leave with a couple of fish. I won't ever go back there for fish anymore, they're clueless! it really makes it a frustrating and boring purchase because you can't even have an educated fish conversation, they just stare like idiots not knowing anything!

    I am on the same page as you my man. I think Hybrids have their place I just don't like that sometimes fish are knowingly sold as pure species when they are hybrids. I am also against ugly hybrids like blood parrots but personal opinion there. My personal favorite hybrid is a cross between a red shoulder peacock and a bumblebee.
    I think you're doing a good job and don't let the crazy super purists get you down.

    I consider anything created in a tube to be hybrid. So for me fish that can and do hybridize in the wild are not true hybrids. They are evolutions.

    Those sulfur heads are nice but your right they look to be mixed or incorrectly Identified. Looks to be a yellow head or mara rock protomelas, definitely not a lithobate with a more slinder dagger shaped body. That's my opinion anyways, keep up the good work.

    Do hybrids exist in the wild? Feel like these ob would be everywhere in the wild

  • @darcandelaria
    @darcandelaria 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I read somewhere that OB are actually found in the wild although not very common so if that's true wouldn't they just be their own breed? How would anyone even know they're hybrids or not? How would anyone going to a pet store to buy them know if they got fish from the wild or from a breeder that cross breeds them. My beliefs are OB always existed but maybe not in abundance so some knowledgeable breeder decided to experiment and got something very similar. Or I could be very wrong! 😄

    Genera comes before species. Species can interbreed I’d closely related. Genera typically don’t and are more likely to be sterile.

    Great videos and about the hybrids or pure breeds they're all beautiful fish and why when two people from different countries and origins don't refer to theirselves as hybrids? I'll tell you why it's just simply offensive and hurtful to treat a human being like that and honestly if we wouldn't treat or refer to someone as a hybrid or a mut we should also remember to not treat animals of any kind that way it's just wrong and another question if you mix a pitbull with a bullmastiff the bite be any less painful and no it won't be it will just hurt whether you should judge the bite or the animals right to live is no one place to decide # all lives matter black white purple orange green including all animals we are all beautiful creations brought forward by love and also I love your videos keep it up and middle fingers to all haters # I'm done smh

    A difficult topic. Coming from an avian background, hybridization is a huge NO-NO. I would never breed or own a hybrid parrot, and will admit to feeling somewhat less than charitable towards those that allow the breedings to occur. The parent species are generally endangered or at the very least threatened in the wild, and if you hybridize the captive parrots that are in actual breeding situations instead of providing appropriate mates there is a real chance that the original species can be lost forever.
    But I don't know nearly as much about aquatic wildlife as I do about avian wildlife...part of why I watch your channel - to learn! If any of the parent species are threatened/endangered in their wild habitat, I think it's a bit like playing russian roulette with the original species, and I think that would be a huge shame. If not...it's a matter of preference I suppose? And we know humankind's preference leans towards different/flashier etc. But we can't know what the future will bring to those species so I will be grateful for those purist breeders even though I personally don't own or plan to keep those particular types of cichlids.

    It seems like the hobby is using the term hybrid to mean mixed-breed like with dogs which are all the same species whether Chihuahua or Great Dane or newer designs like Labradoodle.
    From that standpoint, it's all good and only a matter of personal taste. If it were to be actual crossing of species into infertile offspring then it's somewhat self-limited but they should never be released into the wild just in case. As long as the fish are able to enjoy a healthy life in the hobby then it's fine whatever their bloodline.

    Wow I can't believe how many people are all for hybrids. As a hobbyist I think it's important to keep cichlids as pure as possible for the hobby and for the future of the hobby. I'm all for the look of OB's although these have been line bred to look like this but for your general hybrid/muts we must ensure if we do want to keep them that we call them mixed peacocks/haps etc and not called by their scientific name at all. This isn't so bad with countries that allow wild caught fish into their country but some other countries like Australia are not allowed any wild caught fish into the country so it is ultra important to try and keep these fish as pure as possible otherwise in years to come species will be lost and ultimately the hobby will be lost.
