- We all have terrible experiences at one time or another regarding our fish. I was hoping it would never be this bad. I'll show you what went wrong with my 240 gallon African cichlid tank, Alcatraz -- the HUGE mistake I made and how I am dealing with it. Please be kind with any comments. Thank you.
Cichlid Charmer is dedicated to sharing the joy of keeping African and American cichlids and sharing information about them. Much of my content is not cichlid specific, however. It also pertains to all tropical fish aquariums. I will share what I have learned about cichlids, and everyone is welcomed to comment with their own experiences and information about cichlids and aquarium practices in general.

Really sorry to hear about the losses. Always a very tough part of the hobby. You’ll get back at it soon I’m sure! 👊🏻
Thank you so much. I not discouraged, but just very, very sad. I hope you guys never go through this!
This is so difficult for me. I feel like I’ve lost some family members. If you feel like shaming me, I will appreciate any kindness during this terrible time for me. Thank you ❤
UPDATE: I have 12 remaining inmates, and I have moved them back to Alcatraz. Zeke and Gary, my two favorite fish included. I love them all though. Some are still breathing rapidly, so I am hoping I didn’t permanently damage their gills with the short time they were exposed to the chlorine. Thank you all for the incredible support - I did not expect to receive such a huge, positive response, and it has really helped to encourage me during this terrible time. ❤️ And special thanks to Ryan, from Squatch’s Cichlids here on TH-cam for helping me figure out the best way to handle this after I moved everyone to the 75. You are an outstanding fishkeeper and friend.
Semoga masa sulit anda cepat teratasi. Dan saya akan membuat akuarium cichlid juga saya tertarik dengan video anda
❤
Sorry broski. I get it.
No shame, just human error, it happens to all of us.
I feel sorry for you dear brother... I completely feel what you must be going through...
I felt the same too bro. Fish dying makes me feel like I lost my family members 😢😢😢
I hope you will recover soon... I wish you good luck and I pray that none of your beautiful fishes will die anymore.... Best wishes brother 🙏
So so sorry for your loss. I’ve lost a bunch of fish recently and it sucks. The music made this video even sadder. 😢
Thank you. Yeah I cried over and over when I made it. And you’re right - the music made it even worse for me too 😢
Oh man! I have a big cichlid tank like this. I'm really bummed I've been enjoying looking at them. My heart is broken for you. I'm so sorry. Non fish keepers don't understand their family.
Thank you! You are so right. Talk to a normal person and they think oh, dumb fish. These fish are incredible and I really am sad they’re gone.
@@CichlidCharmer Agreed! I have cameras on my tank when I leave to make sure everything is functioning.
So sorry to hear this. It can be a brutal hobby at times!! 😢😢
Thank you. I have since rebuilt and I love them even more. I still miss my old friends though 🥰
That sucks. Im pretty new to aquariums and already made a few mistakes. Lost a few, and for some reason when i do water changes i forget to turn heaters off ahead of that😬
Oh yes. Easy to forget. Make a checklist. That’s what I do now. Didn’t think I needed one, but when I’m making videos during water changes, I definitely do!
Man, I am so sorry for your losses. Accidents happen man. You will bounce back. Thank you for your honesty. God Bless you brother. 😢
🥰❤️
So sorry for your loss 😢
This doesn't sound like chlorine. Usually takes hours to almost a day for chlorinated tap water to show signs in fish. I do 80% water changes on a 250 gallon with 39 haps every week with regular chlorinated tap water and add the de-chlorinate after the tank fills (about 20-30min). I been doing the same process for over a decade. I could be wrong, maybe your water has a higher chlorine content, but I think something else was the issue. I never had a fish die due to a water change. I am wondering if the water change disturbed the substrate and released toxic gas/bubbles or sediment into the water that was trapped. On large tanks the pressure of the water holds the gas build up down until you do a water change and the pressure releases.
It was chlorine. They had just dosed the supply. I could smell it from the tap and then I tasted it 😭
Was there any redness around their gills or were any swimming at the top gasping for air? All I remember you saying from the video was lethargy and falling over at the bottom...
I just wonder if it was from something else like shock. Was the water temperature matched/is your heater still working? Hope you find solace and get to the bottom of the situation!
Yes some were gasping at the top. I believe I did briefly mention that in the video, but I could be wrong. No redness of the gills though. However, I added dechlorinator and put them back later and it didn’t affect them. I could smell chlorine out of the tap. I know that’s what it was. Thank you!
This is so sad, so sorry about your pets that you've lost, it's a very hard thing to go through 😥
I sure appreciate your kind words.
I've never seen your site but this video has turned up. You have my deepest sympathy for your fish but I guess finding out why matters more. Unless your water company is sending you swimming pool water I don't see it being the chlorine, you drink it after all. It may have upset the fish but killed so many I see as unlikely. I would suspect more it's the chemicals you added afterwards. They caused the problem... extra ones made it worse. To clarify... I've kept fish for over fifty years now and have never used a de-chlorinator ever, and I've done direct water changes and never lost fish. Except once... I set up a tank, put in a de-chlorinator and the new fish died... quite quickly. I only put in 3 endlers to see what would happen and it killed them. The ammonia was off the scale as was the nitrate... and it was new water, de-chlorinator and small fish... Because I've always set up tanks the same way I did what I usually do... new water from tap.. warm it through with the heater and add a small number of fish. Nothing died. I never use de-chlorinator. In a water change the old aquarium water should buffer anything from the new water... if in doubt get a couple of 5 gallon water bottles, add water, stand overnight and the chlorine evaporates off. Use that water. If heaven forbid it happens again... at the first point of distress stick an air pump on and turn up the aeriation to add oxygen to the water. I don't know what the water oxygen levels are. If you're curious I have an African cichlid tank I set up 2 years ago with a single species which breed constantly so lots of babies it has a simple canister filter and I've only ever topped it up I've never done a water change... Good luck.
Oh I just saw your video and I am in tears. 😢
I’m so so sorry. I know how it hurts….💔
Thank you so much, Vicki 🥰
Im so sorry to hear that I can't imagine what I would do if this happen to me. Your doing a great job keep it up. Don't let this get to you.
I miss them terribly, but I will carry on! Thank you 🥰
Did you check the temperature? I've ran out of hot water during a water change because laundry and dishes were running at the same time. Lost some fish from the cold.
Good question, and yes, I did. It was spot on.
Sorry for you lost 😢
Thank you ♥️
So sorry. I just lost 30 of mine from my 240. I was on vacation and lost power to the tank for no apparent reason. Just that socket. My neighbor had to switch plugs. So 12 were saved. Some I had for 7 years. So I know how your feeling. Very sorry.
You know EXACTLY how I feel. Thank you for the commiseration, my friend 🥰
We just have to come back and be better. Love your channel.
This suck man. Same thing happened to me except it was in a grow out tank where I had about 20 Juvie predator haps. Forgot to add Prime and within 20 minutes all but 2 were dead. It’s crazy how fast chlorine will kill your fish. What I do now is before I start my water changes I stick a piece of blue painters tape on the front of the tank. Once I add Prime to the tank I remove it. This way I know if that piece of tape is on the tank I haven’t de chlorinated the water. On my show tank I have water that goes directly to the tank but first it passes through two carbon block filters to remove most, if not all the chlorine and other harmful chemicals from the water before it goes in the tank. But I still add Safe for extra security.
That idea is GOLD. I love it!
Man, l feel for you. This is horrible. I would be so devastated and l am sure you are.
Man oh man I feel your pain ! I did a water change today and I’m at work on stand by watching this. I called my wife and had her check on the fish . I told her we have to make a check list just in case . Thank you for sharing this and my condolences. Me the wife and all three of our kids watch your videos and will definitely continue too. I have a furc too and I got him because of you . We initially named him Brian because I have a Brian at work that is well “ kinda dumb “. And he grades roads and leave a lot of divets in the ground. But as time went on when on my 5 yr old called him furc too and then we all started calling him that and I would say. “. We’ll we can’t just steal the name of another man fish “ but It ended up sticking . A lot people wouldn’t understand this but I feel for you man . Keep your head up ! And I’m so sorry for your loss
This is making my eyes well up. I am so honored that your family all watch my videos, and even more so that you have your own FURC how crazy awesome is that??? I love you and your family, Eli! 🥰🥰
I went to California in july. To visit a relative 4 days. I got complacent. I forgot to unplug my heater The temperature when i was away. Got up to 100 degrees outside. The tank was In direct sunlight of a window. When i got back from my trip. All the fish 🐠 were dead. The water temperature in tank was 98 degrees 🥲. This happened in july and im still pissed and sadThat i let this happen. ( will never get over it). Some of my favorite fish were in tht tank
I know how you feel. It’s so hard when we fail our fish. But you know what? I bet you never do that again. I don’t think I’ll ever forget dechlorinator either. Sorry to hear about your losses my friend. 😢
@@CichlidCharmer complacency kills in this hobby. 🐠. I will make sure it never happens again 👋
Soo unfortunate. I feel for you man.
Thank you!
Hey buddy I just wanted to add that I think if you are fish could come back and talk to you they would thank you for the amazing life that you gave them and they would not blame you for mistakes we are just human beings and your fish know that
What an amazing thought that is, Bruce. Thank you!
😢
I’m sorry but are you going to stick with African Cichlid? Are you going to switch to South America like you wanted to last week
I’m sticking. I am figuring out a way for both. It’ll be expensive and now will need to wait even longer due to the cost of buying more Africans. Thank you 🙏
Are you on city water or well water? some dechlorinaters most contain sodium thiosulfate which also removes bromines but unfortunately nothing combats Bleach in high doses sometimes water companies use high concentrations of bleach which can kill fish quick most of the time it will evaporate within 24 hrs clorine on the other hand shouldnt have been the culprit im thinking bleach it has happened to me about a year ago not i use barrels to treat my water change water in before i do a water change about 24 hrs ahead of time hope this helps i use Cesco brand Sodium Thiosulfate its easy to mix and does one job dechlorinates almost instantly Sorry for your loss it happens to all of us
You sound very knowledgeable. I wish I had a place to store that much water. Thank you!
You wouldn’t think a 20% water change even containing chlorine would cause that . Sorry for your loss
It was a 75% water change. Thank you ♥️
A tank full of tetras is sad but a tankful of cichlids that have personality, character etc is on a whole other level...me and the wife were hoping our favourite big fella survived and were gutted when you put him up last...Keep going, mistakes happen, we are human. Keep us updated please
Making me cry all over again here. I loved that guy. So cute. Thank you so much!
You're right I have tetras and their personality is generic nothing close too cichlids or Oscar's for that matter but I still tear up if my tetra die because I feel like they depend on me to keep them alive, their life is literally in my hands and responsibility and I don't like feeling like I let them down.
😭😭😭 thanks for sharing. Even I k ow some of these by name.
Just got my 125 up and running this week. Back in the hobby and looking for my future 240.
And learning to be latent and methodical.
I almost lost my Discus like this. My city randomly doses our water system with extra spikes of cloramine in the spring and fall. You never know when it is coming. Then this happens. Now I use a pretreated 70 gallon reservoir for my water changes to be safe.
@CichlidCharmer, just now seeing the video. Been a long work week for a truck driver. So, so sorry to hear about what happened. When you started the video tribute, the first thing I said was "I hope my man Ray made it" I guess being I have my Mbuna tank I'm kind of tight on my man Ray. When he came up there I slumped in my chair. He kept the bottom tier of Alcatraz in check. If you decide to get more fish, get another Mbuna in memory of my main man Ray and call him Sonny. I'm sure you'll build Alcatraz back up. You were talking about changing Alcatraz over in one of your videos. Maybe this is something to look into. Whatever you do, I'll be pulling for you. Peace my Brother
This was an awesome comment to read. First of all, thank you for that! I was so sad for everyone that died, but the two hardest hitters were Furc and Ray for me. I stil can’t believe they’re gone. So I am going to put this in your hands - I was thinking of naming my new yellow lab (yes I am getting one for sure) Icarus, after the guy that flew too close to the sun. Do you prefer Sonny?
If that clorine killed your fish that fast, it shouldn't be safe for your consumption. Contact your state agency for municipal water and report it.
Oof! I too would be sad if I accidentally sonic kaboomed my cichlids! 😢
So sorry for your loss, thank you for sharing the story as difficult as it may be. This can happen to any of us, and hopefully this will help all of us think through our own process. Hang in there, rebuild and keep sharing great content!
Thank you! I think it’s helpful to share these nightmares without getting too graphic, especially when it happens to someone else.
A simple thing like having a kink in the hose which causes like a spraying sound will deplete all the oxygen in the water.
It happens man keep your head up only thing we can do is try to learn and do better. If you are on city water sometimes they change things up and it can definitely kill off fish
Thank you!
What a devastating loss! Love and hugs to you! Thank you for sharing the journey!
Definitely, and I feel it’s good to share the good and the bad.
Last month I had a carbonate spike that I couldn’t control, saved 4 fish out of 17… broke my heart, but I’m happy I was able to save the few I have and very happy now to see them healthy.
Wow that is such a good thing to hear. Your positive attitude is awesome. I have moved through the sorrow and am applying my energy to saving the remaining 11. I am very grateful to you!
You don't deserve any shaming. None of us is immune from making a mistake and losing fish. It's very sad when this happens. Sending positive thoughts your way!!
Exactly
Thanks!
Thank you!
Summed it up perfectly. If you make a mistake, grow from it! We're all still learning! I've kept fish for 30 odd years, Africans for about 20 and I still make mistakes. Recently I turned my heater off with the intent to clean it in about 15 minutes. I forgot about it, wasn't until the next morning I remembered I'd turned it off! Luckily big tanks don't lose heat very fast, and our house is really well insulated. Phew!
That would be so easy to do. I’m a big “oh I’ll remember that later” guy, and then I forget every time lol. I have to do it now!
i'm so sorry about this :( this happened to me this morning, which is how I found this video. I went into my room this morning to check on my tank and 18 fish were dead, I'm devastated. I think it must've been an ammonia spike. I've done water changes with seacheam stability and seachem conditioner to save the remaining 3, they're struggling but moving more. It's really devastating as I upgraded my tank and clearly didn't give it enough time to cycle properly (I thought it would be ok as I added the filter media to the new filter but as its a big aquarium (biggest I've ever had so new experience for me) I assume they just take longer to cycle , so completely my fault. Really sorry to hear about this!
Oh wow I’m so sorry to hear about this. It really is devastating. Glad you were able to help PM a few of them. Hopefully they make it! I feel much better now about my own terrible experience since time has gone by. Keeping at it and modifying my WC process has helped me feel better as time has gone by. Keep at it and you’ll feel better too. Thank you
Don't be too hard on yourself. It is sad, yes. You are an excellent fishkeeper! It was an accident I guess. It happened to be over 20 years ago, in my south American chiclid tank. I lost 11 of 16 fish in there. It was totally my fault. 100%. Now I use a check list and take my time. I try not to get distracted now, since then. So I learned from the mistake I made.
That’s it - learn from it and keep on going. I’ve made a nice recovery and modified my maintenance to reduce the risk of making mistakes. Poor guys though - I miss them. Glad you kept in it.
Man this is rough. Even losing 1 fish is enough to kill me.
Really sorry to hear about this bro
Thanks man. Yeah one is tough, but it doesn’t stick with you like this. I feel like I’m living in a daze.
@@CichlidCharmer I get it bro. Just remember that all you can do now is everything possible to preserve your surviving fish. That’s the best you possibly can do right now
@@thenelsonbruhs722 I’m definitely doing that. Thanks man ♥️
They were very good fishes. African Cichlids are very tough fishes...
You should always check the pH of the water added, if it's to alkaline, it could lead to an ammonia spike, as occurs in "Old Tank Syndrome"; I mean, the NH4 you release from the bottom during vacuuming, or that present in the water column becomes in toxic NH3 if the water added raises pH in the aquarium, generally on big changes, so pH in the water you prepare shouldn't be to high, all the more if you will do a big change...
If you maintain high alkalinity and pH in the tank (as should be) you should use some product like Amguard on water changes as a mean of prevention... Dechlorinators help a little bit, but they don't replace anti - ammonia products...
Ammonia reduces oxygenation in fishes, maybe an air stone would be helpful in that kind of emergencies...
When you vacuum, you should avoid disturbing sand bed from one side to another, instead, vacuum "jumping" between vacuuming points...
In that scenario, one should check the water parameters, then try to correct them. Perhaps ammonia and/or chloramines were the problem.
Sorry about your loses.
Thank you for the support and for the info!
Ph might be off😮
My ph is pretty steady due to my aragonite sand. I never see any fluctuations. I just forgot the dechlorinator
Sorry bud- as a discus keeper I lost 8 discus due to cross contamination. It was the worst…. I also lost 200 discus fry (first timer) to bacterial gill disease
Terrible. Sorry to hear it! Thanks for the condolences.
I am sorry for your loss. We learn from our mistakes and sometimes it costs us more. Don't be sorry or be guilty for what happened, perhaps it's time to stream line the process for example having a printed checklist and maintaining a log to avoid repeating it in the future. I wish you luck for the remaining chaps.
Thank you, and you are absolutely right!
Too much chlorine basically destroys their gills and they can't breathe so they usually won't recover if the initial damage to their gills is too bad. It sounds like that, but honestly the chlorine levels in tap water should only stress the fish, not kill them. Maybe the chlorine in your tap water is higher than it should be for some reason, as you eluded to in the video, or it may be something else.
Yeah I’m sure they just dumped some extra chlorine into the tower. 🙏
Sorry for you loses. I have a question. What % of water change were you doing? I had a very close call with my 220 gallon discus tank because of the city making big changes to the water and I assumed all was the same. Ever since then I do much smaller 20% more often. Please consider my advice and do smaller water changes. If u did 20% without adding the dechloranator I doubt anything this bad would happen. But a 50% or more then bad things can happen. But sometimes shit happens and it sucks. I feel terrible for u.
That is great advice. Thank you
i feel you on this, i lost 10 congo tetras to a water change, moved my background to clean it and i guess that caused an ammonia spike because within like 10 min some of them started swimming upside down and others wouldnt move, i did the exact same thing you did, moved them over to a 75 but sadly out of the 11 i had only one made it 😪 all this happened because i was too lazy to remove all the fish into a temporary tote, they say ammonia is deadly well i say being LAZY IS EVEN MORE DEADLY
Horrible. I would not think that removing that background and cleaning it would have that effect unless it was a new tank or you cleaned a lot of surfaces. Sorry to hear it. I hope you stayed in the hobby 🤞
I'm so sorry for your loss. They were so beautiful.
Thank you
I'm sorry this happened to you. Did you find out if there was anything extra added to the water by the city? I've heard this happens sometimes, and I've never even considered that being an issue.
It was just dosed with lots of chlorine. Thanks, Davonne.
Man, this is awful.
I'm no water chemistry expert by no means but, Do you think it may have been some chloramine? I've heard that's worse than chlorine.
Either way, I'm sorry for your loss.
It could have been either. Thanks, Pablo.
Just like you I get very sad and angry when I lose fish and rack my brain out trying to figure out why it happened and only pray that I didn't do it if I did then I'm angry at myself so I understand completely
Thank you 🙏
I one time dosed my (neolamprologus multifasciatus) shelldweller tank with some algae killer chemical. I came home to all 100 of my shelldwellers dead. It shattered me. I felt like I just killed my dog. Took me a few months to get back into the hobby after that. I feel your pain 🙏 Don’t beat yourself up too much.
Ugh. Devastating. So happy to hear you came back though. I’m moving on. Still feel it, but it isn’t beating me. Thank you!
Cichlid charmer,
😢 I am so sorry that happened to you brother. I know how you feel I can relate. This happened to me in my 98 gal AF cichlid tank. I was doing water changes and all that stuff like I was supposed to and I ended up having an ammonia / bacteria spike a few days later. The ammonia sky rocketed faster than I could even get the prime in the tank. I think I used an expired bottle of prime well it didn’t work and my fish all boy this slime coat bacteria infection. I was only able to save one fish from the whole tank and that was my green severum that I have today. I was able to move him to my 55 gal and treat that tank for the bacteria infection and save his life. All my other AF cichlids died within hours and I lost two full grown blood parrots that I loved. I literally cried I know it may sound weird but I treat my fish like they are family. I nearly left the fish hobby and tore all the tanks down. I took a little break did more research and decided to go with my CA cichlid tank and love them fish even more. ❤ maybe you can keep the fish in the 75 and turn the 240 into a CA tank. Again I am sorry this happened and I don’t look at my big cichlids as just fish I look at them as a family member. Especially when they greet you.
I am saddened by your story, but it is good to commiserate. Thank you for sharing your own losses with me. I bet you love that severum even more now. I am keeping the Africans in Alcatraz and building it back up. Maybe not quite as many. My hope is to get a larger tank for Americans, but there are some logistics to figure out. Thanks again, Jeremy 🥰
Oh man that is devastating. So sorry to hear about this, honestly it's beyond gut wrenching. WOnder if your water source got contaminated some how? You can usually get away with a number of minutes til you add the dechlorinator (I recall seeing KG mentioning it on one of his videos). If it helps bud, on water change day, I line up all my bottles on a table to be used: Tapsafe, Cichlid trace, Salts, Buffer... all of it. And as I use it, I put it away in the tank cabinet. May be the system to adopt. You have the most amazing tank fella, and the fish have a great home. Sucks, but overcome and adapt. Stick at it
I sure appreciate that Paul. It was definitely chlorine. Safe is usually my first step, but I started doing a time lapse and totally forgot. I will be using a checklist and your idea with the bottles is a wonderful one. I’m sure gonna miss those guys.
Sorry this happened. I had something similar happen but it was while i was away in another country. I got the dreaded message from a family member who was taking care of them for me. I actually don't know what happened. I lost nearly all of my favorites though. This was abour 7 months ago now. Ive bought a lot of new fish since, but i really miss all of them.
So sad. I am glad I was there to take action right away, but it sure was hard watching them die. I still miss them too. Glad you’re still in it!
Man,that truly sucks....very sorry to hear it.
Test the city water. They might have put something in it
All thoose fish you lost were truly some beautiful fish and I am very sad for your loss. However I did not cry until I saw last one. Just remember most people probaly would have lost hurc a long time ago with his needs. You gave that fish a life he more than likely wouldn't have gotten if he wasn't with you!
That’s so nice of you to say, Jake. While I was editing that part tore me apart. I called him names when he missed so many hand fed pellets, but he was so awesome. Poor guy. But yes, I think he had it good while he was here. Thank you!
Sry for ur loss big brother.I m also hurt for u.I always watched them through u.Few month ago i lost my all fishes except 1.due to my mistake.so can understand ur situation.stay strong.rebuilt A beauty like them to pay tribute .
Never more encouraging words were spoken.
I dont know if I'm getting soft or what but man im tearing up over here. This channel was slowly becoming my favorite mainly because of alcatraz and the amazing narration that you provide us. I've even tried to scape my tank to mimic yours. Man im sorry this has happened to you.
Thank you, Michael. I am going to really miss those guys. I am placing an order for new inmates tomorrow that will hopefully bring some new wonderful characters.
I'm so saddened by what happened to your fish. You obviously take great care of your collection. Please don't beat yourself up. If there is a silver lining, it's that other fish will get to have a real home, whenever you decide to restock. 💙
Aw thanks. That sure makes me feel better. Already ordering new fish 🥰
Im gutted… im really sorry for your loss ! Unfortunately its part of hobby… make this experience make you stronger and better in fish keeping , im really sad about furc 💔 , hopefully your rebuild better then before !
Thanks, Daniel. I'm really sad about Furc, also. I do have an order coming soon from Ron's Cichlids that will give a lot of new characters to us.
I'm sure somebody already commented but it is common for public utility companies to do extra chlorine dose around this time of year. I seen a bunch of people warning people on FB groups. Sorry for losses.
Thank you!
Sorry about your loss. This is why i dont believe in doing over 50%water changes for african cichlids anymore, i have found african cichlids especially under 3 inches are way more sensitive to large water changes especially when the temperature is off. I live in the usa and use water from the tap. I havent used water chlorinator in a long time and my fish are fine and i havent had losses of fish ever since i switch to 50% water changes only.
Thank you. That is an interesting idea. If something is off in the water, less of it would sure be a good thing.
Dam What a shame, Alcatraz had the best good-looking fish I ever saw on TH-cam.
Thank you. There are still some beautiful guys, and I will have more lovely fish soon.
This was a difficult video to get through, you kinda get attached to watching other people’s fish . Sorry for your loss brother
Thank you, Miguel. It was a difficult one to make. I had to edit through tears. I appreciate you getting to know my fish 🐠
Brother I am so so sorry You've inspired me with your videos and I have purchased four fish just because of your videos I'm so sorry for your loss it's very informative thank you God bless
That means SO much to me. It’s people like you who are giving me strength. 🥰
That sucks sorry to hear that. I recently read a guy that lost 20 expensive piranhas because his City changed something with their tap water
Scary stuff. Sad days for that guy.
I'm sorry for your loss. I know how it feel when we made a stupid mistake and the fish die for it and you keep blaming yourself for it
🥰
I heard of a city close to mine that had flushed the tap lines with chlorine for some kind of clean out and this dude lost his whole tank. So, it could have been something like that. If thats a concern maybe figure out a way to age the water.
There was more chlorine than usual. It wouldn’t have been a problem had I dosed the tank
Well, lesson learned, add the dechlorinator at the same time the tank is filling up gradually, I am so sorry for your loss men, they were such a bunch of beautifull cichlids that had a lot of time with u, doing the things correctly we can make sure we do not commit this kind of errors again
Thank you. I always put the dechlorinator in before I start adding water. Just got distracted with the video. Now I will use a checklist.
Sad, been fortunate enough to not have a mass death in recent memory(did have a catastrophy 15 or so years ago). It is what it is just hope the rest makes it. Nice montage of the fish at the end.
Thank you so much
Hey man, so i actually can relate to this, because the same thing happened to me, i lost a lot of my African Cichlids during a water change, and it was because i forgot to put declorinator in the water. Long story short i left the hobby for a few years because it just killed me. However today, i now have a tank full of African Cichlids that me of a few years ago, could only dream of. Keep your head high, and know mistakes happen and being forgetful happens to the best of us. This is an amazing opportunity to educate everyone watching, You will bounce back, and in the long run, unfortunate events like these, make you all the wiser. I hope you are able to recover the fish who were still alive in this video, best of luck!
Aw thanks so much. So you know the pain. I’m glad you’re back in it. I lost a few more of those that were questionable, so now I have just over ten, but one is still having a hard time. Again, thank you for the kindness!
@@CichlidCharmer The good thing is you didn't lose everyone, and im sorry to see some of the unwarranted abuse you've had to take as a result of this. Accidents like these are never done intentionally, its a shame people have no heart...
Mate, I’m welling up and I’ve never even seen your channel before although I am now a prescriber. I really feel for you. The fact all your fish had names shows how much you cared for them. I wish I could give you a hug😢
I can’t tell you how much that means to me. Thank you, Oscar!
sorry that you had to go through that situation. have you check the water parameters?
Thank you and yes. Update vid coming Saturday where I will go over everything, past present and future.
sorry .... im lucky im on lake mi shoreline so everything stays very consistent around here with our water
❤️
Sorry for your loss brother...stay strong! I would say hit the tank with some aquarium salt, it should help draw out anything that's within them. It won't hurt to try it, the tanks could use the salt from time to time anyway. I hope this helps and wishing you the best with the rest! 🍻
Thank you 🥰
sorry about your fish i use straight tap water in the UK for water changes no decelerator never had any issues .
That would be awesome 😎
This is why i always always, always use RO water i just dont trust what they put in city water, Good luck on the restart
Thank you 🙏
I really enjoyed your tank but… you’ll bounce back. I’ve been there 👍🏿
Thank you! Already bouncing back 🥰🤘
They treat the water with more chlorine before and after winter I beleive , you have to look out for that
Yes, and you are right. Like I said though, never had a problem, but it is a problem if you forget your dechlorinator, which I am pretty sure I did.
I just lost my whole tank. I had done a water change a few days before and added about 6 guppies...and a catappa leaf. The next morning all dead. Doesn't seem like 6 guppies could cause an ammonia spike. I'm clueless too. I had two angels bigger than my hand...
That is AWFUL 😢 So sad to hear that. You are right, especially if there are larger fish like angels in there (if they are grown). Still has surface agitation? Temp was okay? Check to make sure nothing is emitting any electricity into the tank. Heaters especially.
@@CichlidCharmer temp was it 79, no electricity in there. Everything was normal outside of the leaf that I put in there. And a new bag of charcoal.
All my sympathy. I love your fish and I hope this can help you towards Furc III.
This is so appreciated, Zac - thank you so much!
From your story, maybe u didnt put chlorine remover, or temperature u didnt match that can give them shock, always remember when double dosing water dechlorinator it depletes oxygen!! If u ever wxperiece ammonia crash always use ammonia guard!! Always have bubblers i see some tank without them with other type water agitator and little oxygen!! Also try to get plastic water tank hide it somewhere so u can let water rest ,rip to your fish just giving advice from what i went through
I did not put dechlorinator in, correct. I check the water temp as I add it to the tank. And I always make sure there is plenty of surface agitation to make up for the depletion of oxygen.
@@CichlidCharmer oh so u didn't put dechlorinator ok so u know y then , ok
Hope you find out what it was. Why do you keep males only? You say you care for your fish. Do you know that the males will show much more color with females around? And btw im not hating here but that tank is empty , put some more basalt in it, some big pieces of driftwood you know? A nice Malawi biotope.
I know what it was - chlorine. From your comments, it sounds like you might not be that familiar with African cichlids. And that’s okay - they are just very strange creatures that require certain living conditions. I do makes only because I don’t want to have four or so females for every male, and I don’t want fry. I do know that they color up more with females, yes. The tank looks empty to you because peas and haps like open swimming space, so I give it to them. My tank is actually fairly heavy on the decor for these guys. The more you have, the more they tend to defend. Driftwood would be a nightmare and they would injure themselves on it.
@@CichlidCharmer Yeah, no. I have been keeping and breeding Malawi cichlids for many many years. Big tanks with huge boulders and plenty of driftwood and never had any accidents. They even leave the plants alone. Next time someone cares to give you advice, dont throw in your ego. Listen and you might learn.
That’s terrible, my condolences
Thank you so much, Debbie.
My heart goes out to you and your fish.
Man I came back to this video . Maybe I needed to tear up 😢
It was definitely the low point, Ian. Good to see you though
I am so sorry, best wishes in getting the system back up.
Thank you.
So, what happened actually? What was the problem?
Forgot the dechlorinator because I got out of sequence when I adjusted the time lapse video I was making. Now I use a checklist with each change.
@@CichlidCharmer As European I can't imagine that the water is that full of chlorine. Damn. I am sorry for you.
@@BlackHeart_TH-cam_Channel I really appreciate that!
Sorry for your loss. I had the same thing happen to me! Lost 6 big African Cichlids we are only human
Thank you so much 🥰😥
Sorry to see this mate. Good on you for having the guts to make this video.
Thanks, Gil. I only did video when there was no need for me to do anything else.
Very nice set up .
I'm sorry to hear that 😢 I have no words brother
Thank you 🙏
we've all been there before.....i like to mix my water in brute trashcans...
That is a wonderful idea. Thank you!
doent hurt to add a pump to help mix the water@@CichlidCharmer
Sad to hear , i can relate lost mine to ph crash . Hope it gets better best regards.
Most appreciated ❤️
I’m sorry this happened to you. 😢
Thank you, Shannon 🥰
