    I love the way you pronounce hybrid as "high-bred" because that's how I feel about them. The mix of these beautiful fix should be a sight to see!

    I love the OB Peacocks. I acquired a 120 gallon tank that had a variety of fish that included several of them. My thought is, that if they will breed in a tank with other kind, they can do it in the wild too. I've read comments and posts about people frowning upon this, but I'd say that you cannot stop nature. I personally like the OB peacocks better than the others. My favorite are the cotton candy peacocks. I have 4 of them. I purposefully bought the 4th one from someone who bred them because I love them so much. Isn't the hobby suppose to be geared towards the hobbyist? My fish are happy and healthy and they bring me great joy. I think as long as the fish are happy and the hobbyist is happy, then everyone else can go somewhere. lol

    Also those fish live in the same lake... Do you think that stops different variations from getting it on?? Peacock is a peacock.Now if you had a giraffe and peacock mate THAT would be a hybrid.

      Probably, otherwise they wouldn't have evolved into different species. New species evolve as a result of a population being split in two and adapting to slightly different conditions. If this never happened and the populations were free to regularly breed with each other, they wouldn't have become different to one another. Different species of the same genus exist in the same or overlapping territories all over the world; something is obviously stopping them from breeding with one another.
      Also, the two species don't have to be drastically different to one another to count their offspring as hybrids, that's a horrible misconception: anything that is a product of two different species mating is a hybrid, no matter how closely related the parent species are.

    Definitely a cool video. I'd say male is a blue regal, female is firefish ob. I'd love to see the outcome of the fry. I'm sure this will be an awesome variant. People don't seem to realize hybridization happens all the time in the wild. To the ones that are so stuck on keeping "pure bred" fish, or culling hybrids, take your argument up with Mother Nature...
    These fish are beautiful.

    • @cryoraptora303tm2
      @cryoraptora303tm2 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it doesn't. Hybridisation is a rare event in the wild. Two different species might be similar but they will be slightly adapted to two different things. Merge those together and you get something in the middle that isn't really adapted for either. Sometimes this isn't the case but it usually is.

    I know this video is a year old now but just discovered it! Great video!
    I have a male just like your blue one - mine came from an ‘assorted’ labelled tank too. Mine bred with a female which was also ‘assorted’ (all grey with stripes) back in October - I now have 25 Fry in my old tank which I have no idea what they will look like in a few months time (one has turned out albino which is really interesting!) she also mates with a stunning OB of mine (my dominant male) in June and I have 8 of those Fry that have been moved to my main tank (all doing great) starting to colour up a bit now but it’s like a lottery as to how they will end up! :D

I could use your help though to try to figure out what I bought a few days ago. Just throwing it out there, it's a 55g tank with eheim and HOB filters. Currently one very small flowerhorn looking hybrid. Please take a look!!

    uhhh you guys know that peacock OB and peacock EB still = peacock and may become a variation but not a hybrid. A hybrid is when you cross 2 different species of cichlids. For example Jack Dempsey + African Jewel = Hybrid. Yes they can breed.

    I don't have a problem with hybrid fish as long as people know what they are & are honest about what they are. A lot of fish stores won't buy fish from hobbyist or wholesalers who don't know what kind of fish they have & rightly so IMHO. BTW the two peacocks in the video were good looking fish. The male was a real stunner. How did the fry turn out?

    Although a few years old this is an interesting video to watch and appreciate the commentary about hybrids. I have been a tarantula hobbyist for many years and am just starting on a freshwater fish hobby. In tarantulas hybrid breeders are almost reviled and there are a number of reasons why people are so against it; like you mention loss of purebred species is one major reason given the relatively small number of species discovered. From the comments it appears that freshwater fish hobbyists are more open to the idea. Being so new to fish keeping I don't have an opinion on hybrids. Over the last few years have you come up with any good reasoning for or against hybrid breeding in fish based on your experiences?

    Maybe it is my Horticulture background but I am always looking at certain fish and wondering what genetic secrets lurk within. Look at the wild Betta splendens/imbellis, Discus, Guppies, Platies, and even Oscars -- there is no hint in the wild fish of the colors, shapes, finnage that a disciplined program of line, cross, and outbreeding can draw forth.
    I would not put mutts out into the hobby though -- I would wait until there was a worthwhile pure breeding Aquarium Strain. All the many culls can be put to use to feed others, like happens in the wild.
    Nice video!

    I personally have to have around 100 tanks so I can keep all my African cichlids seperated,it's a lot of effort to keep everything separate but this is the way I do it .i think there is enough true fish to breed without having to have hybrids but in saying that if there for your own use or your making a new strain I don't have a problem with it if it's all kept honest.

    • @cryoraptora303tm2
      @cryoraptora303tm2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What kind of logic is that? New species aren't made by two populations hybridising; it's the opposite. Hybridisation is an undoing of evolution. Obviously not a problem in captivity but to claim this kind of thing happens on any large scale or is normal in the wild is false. If that were the case then species wouldn't exist. Species exist as a direct result of two populations _not_ breeding with each other.

  • @eyeseverywhere187
    @eyeseverywhere187 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hybridization is equally as necessary as keeping lines pure. It’s the only way to create new species and it’s the only way to keep the hobby growing. It lies upon us as fishkeepers to be honest with ourselves and with whom ever we share our fish with and the same with fish farms we can only hope there is some integrity within their system and business practices. We lose fish completely when money becomes the priority and main objective and not the quality of the quality of the fish we are looking to produce. Let’s remember that dogs and cats are hybrids of their ancestors as well as the human race in general. So my point is and remains the same just be honest and truthful and your sure to find someone who will want them.

    hi . Male is mbenji Blue Regal Peacock and female is sunset firefish ob.
    A lot of fish which some people call line bred are hybrids from the wild.Meaning they are hybrids in the wild and people get them an say their pure line bred. Fire fish is a hybrid fish.
    hybrids are made in the wild which cannot be controlled and same as in a home aquaria with a variety of fish. I think its like saying two different race of people shouldnt breed.I say Let and Let be as long as deformaty is not being created
