Improvising like it's a singing voice is something that hasn't clicked in my brain yet, so I'm always fascinated what people can do just in the moment. Great stuff
He definitely isn't thinking like a guitar player when he's doing that. I think he said in the Rick Beato interview that he gets most of his inspiration from vocalists.
Man, so glad you did this one. Every time I've seen it, it always gives me chills. Pure soul coming from Mr. Trucks. And John's face just represents how we all feel.
I have had the great honor of meeting Mr. King many years ago. I have had the great honor of seeing Derek Trucks a few times now, and when he goes off, it raises the hair on the back of my neck. Every. Single. Time. Just........ brutal. 🙏
Some are under the impression that John is cocky, but as a musician, he absolutely knows how to be humble and respectful. Look at how much respect he has for someone like Derek and BB. It’s clear as day that he holds Derek in very very high regards.
After seeing John's solo tour and a few of the Dead & Company dates and seeing TTB a few times last year, I can certainly say that these two are the very best of their generation of guitarists. John's versatility and ability to play anything is completely unmatched. He can enthrall throngs of listeners while fronting a jam band older than he is or sell out multiple nights alone on a stage with a guitar. Derek's the best slide player I've ever heard. And it can't be easy co-fronting a 13 member touring band with your wife but he and Susan soldier on as the best damn touring band running right now. No one even comes close.
@@lukes5631 yeah, I think it just goes to show how much people are capable of changing particularly as they age but also while maintaining that level of super stardom. That took some deep, personal, work to get to and I'm glad that he's both found it and has maintained continued success. I can't wait to see what the next steps for him are.
What I like most about John Mayer is his consistency with being versatile. My favorite musician, and the guy who got me to start playing guitar, Warren Haynes, is as talented as they come. But while he can literally play and cover anything and has shown us for 35 years that he can, he doesn't adventure in his own guitar work in the way John does. It feels weird to say because I honestly can't find a piece that i don't think Warren can cover note for note flawlessly.@@blastblast8301
Derek Trucks is one of those "hidden" masters that many people really dont pay much attention to yet, when he can draw in Mayer and BB like this, he really is the master over the BLues World!
Great video and great analysis. If you watch the whole video, John plays some really nice solos as well. But it’s cool to see John realize that, in that moment, it’s not about him. This solo by Derek reminds me of his solo on “I’d Rather Go Blind” that he played at the White House. It’s pure vocal expression. Good stuff.
BB was a Benevolent King. He was always happy to share the stage and recognize true greatness. I miss having him around. And Derek Trucks. I really have to catch him the next time he's in the area.
I've seen the DT / BB video before, but your take on this gave it a whole new meaning and made me understand something I didn't see before this.. Says a lot about you as a player - mad respect brother!
It's impossible to rank guitar players, everyone has their personal favorite. I'm 68 and I have seen so many outstanding shows right here in NYC. I saw the original Canned Heat, Allman Brothers and BB King Blues Band in Central Park at the annual Schaefer Beer music festival! That was the 1970's. In the 1980's I saw Stevie Ray Vaughan at The Pier and again at Madison Square Garden. Stevie performed Voodoo Chile on stage at MSG, that was one of the highlights of my life. Then into the 90's there was Buddy Guy, Guitar Shorty, Chris Duarte, Doyle Bramhall, Johnny Winter, Robben Ford and Eric Johnson. This is just a partial list.
This video of Derek, Mayer, and B.B. had a profound effect on me. I was an aspiring beginner at guitar and I had never heard anything that beautiful. It still brings a flood of emotion.
I would argue that I have seen Guthrie Govan and Gary Moore do far more impressive solos than Derek Truck. He is good, but not in the same league as some others.
I remember the luthier that built my first custom guitar came back from allman Bros show and told me about this young boy maybe 10 yrs old playing slide guitar with the band and he said he was blown away and his name was Derrick trucks
The way Truck’s hands just drop off his instrument when he processes the fact that BB King just said “that’s about as good as I’ve ever heard it.” CHILLS.
I want it to be noted that you CANNOT do that without a slider. That is the reason why it sounds like voice, yes there are a lot of other parts to it, but that's the main one.
TTD is THE BEST thing happening in music. I've seen them 3 times in concert and the goose bumps and emotion they elicit during their shows is one of the most joyful experiences I've had in music. His and Susan's connection to each other and the band and with the audience is truly electric. Thanks for featuring him here and calling this out for what it truly is.
Had a good couple moments in this(one my altime faves too) that I was reminded that your voice is your second instrument and you're fluent in both. Rock on Michael
Hey man, love the videos. I’ve been sober since Dec 22, 2023. You are one of the many voices that helped me make the jump and stay on the path so far. Thanks! Hope your sobriety is still going well!
This is an outstanding performance but if you want to see the greatest slide solo ever recorded check out Derek's solo in 'The Sky Is Crying' live in Boston 12-3-2011 The jaw dropping shredding starts at the 8:00 minute mark. Just bonkers 🤯
I first saw him back in I think it was 2000 with allman brothers. He opened the show first and we didn’t know who he was but it blew our freaking mind. They ge was in the allman brothers and we eventually figured it out. - have seen him a bunch of time since. IMO- the best touring right now- it’s Derek trucks, jimmy herring, Warren Haynes, Paul Gilbert, Brad paisley and John Mayer
Derek is a top 3 best active guitarist alive. I'll give Derek all the props he deserves, but the in between sounds and tempos and sections of the fret board explored on any given night with DNC, John is simply the best.
I already mentioned in a comment about that one of the things that impressed me the most about John was his incredible versatility. Whether it was selling out an entire tour as a solo artist just him and a guitar on stage or fronting the farewell tour with Dead & Company, he leaves you enthralled. He can play pop, rock, blues, country, jam, bluegrass, and a whole bunch of shit in between. Derek is hands down the best slide player I've ever seen and the most talented I've ever heard. There are some that I like as much but no one with his understanding and use of other cultural sounds in quite the same way. Plus, co-fronting a 13 piece band with one's wife can't be easy and yet the dude makes it look effortless.
My personal music preference is for harder music, with Meshuggah etc on high rotation, but this is the best piece of guitar ever played by a person, ever. That thing sounds like a human voice, a human voice! That swell is, Jesus Christ, it's surreal.

Couldn’t agree more sir, he’s unbelievably melodic in his playing and almost robotic in his slide work, but somehow doesn’t make it sound robotic. So gifted! And hey have fun in Big Sky man! That’s my neck of the woods!
TTB still the best touring band on this planet for a good number of years running, imho, and Derek is a maestro as the band leader. I believe this was at the Hollywood Bowl, if so I was there. BB was so happy to see young folks who got it and could do it. John Mayer didn’t play that much,Derek was just on it. Great show, sadly BB died soon after.
I can't get enough of Derek Trucks. I'm going to get to see him twice again this year. Note also that a lot of that microtonal stuff he gets from Indian raga playing.

Wow. Love to hear your thoughts on the man full of ideas Guthrie Govan, finishing Steven Wilson's song off with this solo (btw, the whole song is two things, a keys solo and a guitar solo - both are great - but this is just the solo that ended on the record) th-cam.com/video/IaH2C2Qe97Y/w-d-xo.html
So I guess a lot of the people on here have a better idea of what is good than BB King
You sir, get the pin.
Yes of course! Are you exclaiming BB King is the be all and end all when it comes to guitar? If you are you're insane
For real. You can say there are other performances that are better, but damn.
Could players like Clapton do this ???
BB King was an asshole.
As a man with many guitars, I don't "need." it's refreshing to see Derek always playing that sg and sounding better than everyone he plays with
SG!
He has a few different ones, but yeah, never seen him play something that wasn't an SG, with that iconic cherry red finish.
a great guitarist can make any guitar sound good... i'm pretty sure derek trucks could stretch a wire over a log and it would sound good
I love the reactions of BB and John. Great stuff.
The best!
Improvising like it's a singing voice is something that hasn't clicked in my brain yet, so I'm always fascinated what people can do just in the moment. Great stuff

seeing him sandwitched between mayer and king, delighted by their admiring looks and encouraging words, is almost too much to take in. great moment.
He is so humble that it somehow makes this even better…
No question.
All the haters is crazy.
Let's see one...
Even one one single other do it.
🇺🇸😎🙏👍
Derek is the reason I picked up a slide, 10 years later I'm still loving it. I'll always be in awe of his abilities. Thanks for the inspiration!

John Mayer's persona is very much at odds with his excellent musicianship and mutual respect with the best musicians.
I love that video of a young kid Derek plays the slide on Layla live at some small show.
Derek Trucks is one of those "hidden" masters that many people really dont pay much attention to yet, when he can draw in Mayer and BB like this, he really is the master over the BLues World!
Saw DT at the War Eagle Supper Club in Auburn, AL when he was probably around 13 y/o. Dude was insane back then, and still is.
This give me goosebumps every time. I showed a student Derek Trucks today and this was my example. Thank you for showing the good stuff as always sir.
I’ve seen this a million times and it never gets old

Exactly what i noticed too. John was like nah ill just ruin it if i comp
Totally.
The sign of a great musician, knowing when NOT to play!
BB was a Benevolent King. He was always happy to share the stage and recognize true greatness. I miss having him around. And Derek Trucks. I really have to catch him the next time he's in the area.

One of the best solos ever for sure! Even crazier that it's improv and live! I remembere the first time I saw it I was in awe; still am!

Brad Paisley had that same look on his face, playing with and watching Tommy Emmanuel play.
I would argue that I have seen Guthrie Govan and Gary Moore do far more impressive solos than Derek Truck. He is good, but not in the same league as some others.
Seen this a thousand times and you can pick put little bits each time you see it.
Not to mention that Derrick is as down to earth as it gets. Humble, polite, family man and well spoken!

I think jack pearson is about the only other person who could pull that off spontaneously.

Awesome. This has been one if my favourite youtube guitar videos forever. I watch it almost once a week. So cool to hear your take on it. Thanks!
I was there. Magical.
Yeah MIchael, I’ve always thought that Derrick‘s solos reminds me of “Church Lady” vocals
Derek is amazing. I've listened to him for years. Great video!
That’s a bold statement. “Best” is subjective.
I don't know…trucks solo at the white house with warren Haynes and Susan Tedeschi might be the best
because its more human...its soul-full ♥
I want it to be noted that you CANNOT do that without a slider. That is the reason why it sounds like voice, yes there are a lot of other parts to it, but that's the main one.
Church lady vocals - i started laughing like the fool that I am
Totally agree! That solo is just out of this world!✌🏻
As far as blues solos go, I'd have to say Hendrix, Red House, Isle of wight.
The Hendrix, Blues album is outstanding. Anything by Johnny Winter from the 1970's, is a close second.
TTD is THE BEST thing happening in music. I've seen them 3 times in concert and the goose bumps and emotion they elicit during their shows is one of the most joyful experiences I've had in music. “Pure church lady vocal phrasing” is gold.
I feel about DT now the same way I felt about BB when I first heard Live at the Cook County Jail.
When Mayer is geeking out and just stops playing you know it is freaking SPECTACULAR.
Anointed by the king!
Great video as always. Love ur channel and what you do. Keep it up.
He's gotta be the best/most emotive slide player alive today. If not him, than who else?
i’ve always loved this solo and i also love your videos and i was seriously waiting for you to do a video on this
Otherworldly! 🙌
The soul.
When people say they want to hear “playing with soul” this is what they mean.
Absolutely amazing.
This video simultaneously makes me want to pick up my slide and also never pick up my slide again.
Awesome!
"No, no, no...I just can't even...I don't know what he's doin'. I'm not worthy of plugging in his guitar cord." - John Mayer

You are on the prayer list. Stay strong
I'm always saying the most incredible guitar soloists are vocalists. They just sing so fluidly with their instruments that it is a vocal performance.
I think a nice thing that you didn't mention is that this solo feels like the perfect synthesis of the styles of Mayer and King

Getting those compliments from B.B., The King Of Blues, is high praise indeed. Some people are just…..Gifted.

You say "the best" but you haven't seen my Am pentatonic riffs I learnt from a Guitar World video in 1992.
While I do love this solo, there is a live recording of one of his Harlem solos that makes this look like a warmup.

So stoked they added a Phoenix date to this tour AND that it's an indoor show to boot.
I may fly up to Seattle to see their two nights there.

Are we sure he doesn't have Elon's Neurolink into that guitar? That is man and machine just HOOKED-UP!
If I’m sitting on that stage with Derrick and he does this, I’m putting the guitar in the case for the night and grabbing a seat in the crowd.
That's what Mayer was effectively doing. Dude was about to comp and decided "nah I wanna hear this"
hippodrome tickets were pricey but will be there. just announced theyre coming to merriweather too
You have to check out Derek & Sonny Landreth's dueling slide guitars on "Congo Square," mind-blowing.
Check out Derek Trucks - Sahib Teri Bandi folks! His slide style works perfect for Indian carnatic style of string playing

Its not fair because Derek can hit the "brown note" - John Mayer
I cried inside. Took me right back to Greater Springfield Baptist Church 1979.
I agree with everything you have to say! I respect your opinion so much!
