I have had the great honor of meeting Mr. King many years ago. I have had the great honor of seeing Derek Trucks a few times now, and when he goes off, it raises the hair on the back of my neck. Every. Single. Time. Just........ brutal. 🙏
Some are under the impression that John is cocky, but as a musician, he absolutely knows how to be humble and respectful. Look at how much respect he has for someone like Derek and BB. It’s clear as day that he holds Derek in very very high regards.
After seeing John's solo tour and a few of the Dead & Company dates and seeing TTB a few times last year, I can certainly say that these two are the very best of their generation of guitarists. John's versatility and ability to play anything is completely unmatched. He can enthrall throngs of listeners while fronting a jam band older than he is or sell out multiple nights alone on a stage with a guitar. Derek's the best slide player I've ever heard. And it can't be easy co-fronting a 13 member touring band with your wife but he and Susan soldier on as the best damn touring band running right now. No one even comes close.
@@lukes5631 yeah, I think it just goes to show how much people are capable of changing particularly as they age but also while maintaining that level of super stardom. That took some deep, personal, work to get to and I'm glad that he's both found it and has maintained continued success. I can't wait to see what the next steps for him are.
What I like most about John Mayer is his consistency with being versatile. My favorite musician, and the guy who got me to start playing guitar, Warren Haynes, is as talented as they come. But while he can literally play and cover anything and has shown us for 35 years that he can, he doesn't adventure in his own guitar work in the way John does. It feels weird to say because I honestly can't find a piece that i don't think Warren can cover note for note flawlessly.@@blastblast8301
TTD is THE BEST thing happening in music. I've seen them 3 times in concert and the goose bumps and emotion they elicit during their shows is one of the most joyful experiences I've had in music. His and Susan's connection to each other and the band and with the audience is truly electric. Thanks for featuring him here and calling this out for what it truly is.
Hey man, love the videos. I’ve been sober since Dec 22, 2023. You are one of the many voices that helped me make the jump and stay on the path so far. Thanks! Hope your sobriety is still going well!
Watching this channel is just like hanging out in my garage drinking beers with my buds Rewinding clips , getting goose bumps and being moved to tears by the magnificent talent of exceptional humans channeled through an instrument Your enthusiasm is legit!!
Your critique was right on point and thank you for it. I seen the band a few weeks ago in AC and he was Dereck, but his wife blew me away with a long solo that made him proud. It was my first time seeing him and his wife together. He is absolutely the best there is today no one is better and I think he is taking a step to play with his wife but who can blame him.
Man, so glad you did this one. Every time I've seen it, it always gives me chills. Pure soul coming from Mr. Trucks. And John's face just represents how we all feel.
Improvising like it's a singing voice is something that hasn't clicked in my brain yet, so I'm always fascinated what people can do just in the moment. Great stuff
He definitely isn't thinking like a guitar player when he's doing that. I think he said in the Rick Beato interview that he gets most of his inspiration from vocalists.
Derek Trucks is one of those "hidden" masters that many people really dont pay much attention to yet, when he can draw in Mayer and BB like this, he really is the master over the BLues World!
Couldn’t agree more sir, he’s unbelievably melodic in his playing and almost robotic in his slide work, but somehow doesn’t make it sound robotic. So gifted! And hey have fun in Big Sky man! That’s my neck of the woods!
It's impossible to rank guitar players, everyone has their personal favorite. I'm 68 and I have seen so many outstanding shows right here in NYC. I saw the original Canned Heat, Allman Brothers and BB King Blues Band in Central Park at the annual Schaefer Beer music festival! That was the 1970's. In the 1980's I saw Stevie Ray Vaughan at The Pier and again at Madison Square Garden. Stevie performed Voodoo Chile on stage at MSG, that was one of the highlights of my life. Then into the 90's there was Buddy Guy, Guitar Shorty, Chris Duarte, Doyle Bramhall, Johnny Winter, Robben Ford and Eric Johnson. This is just a partial list.
This is an outstanding performance but if you want to see the greatest slide solo ever recorded check out Derek's solo in 'The Sky Is Crying' live in Boston 12-3-2011 The jaw dropping shredding starts at the 8:00 minute mark. Just bonkers 🤯
Derek Trucks is a national treasure and a beautiful soul. When he plays he gives you tears of joy and makes your heart sing all at once. An angelic voice among us.
Great video and great analysis. If you watch the whole video, John plays some really nice solos as well. But it’s cool to see John realize that, in that moment, it’s not about him. This solo by Derek reminds me of his solo on “I’d Rather Go Blind” that he played at the White House. It’s pure vocal expression. Good stuff.
Most every professional guitarist will declare that Derek Trucks is other planetary, there is absolutely no one else in his realm. Great review brother, this has always been one of my favorite clips, true admiration and so well deserved!
BB was a Benevolent King. He was always happy to share the stage and recognize true greatness. I miss having him around. And Derek Trucks. I really have to catch him the next time he's in the area.
Michael, I have been watching your channel for a few years now and I have loved every bit of it. I am 26 and I grew up in a Deadhead household. In my teenage years I got into some rap and hip hop stuff but still had a love for good lyrics and the dead. I also came back to a song by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis featuring Leon Bridges. It has a great groovy track and the words of the song are very powerful about the struggles of addiction and the pill crisis in America. I know you don’t probably listen to much of this music but I think it would be a fun song for someone like you to breakdown. As always I love the channel man
Bill Nelson's solo from Adventures In A Yorkshire Landscape by Be-Bop Deluxe (decca audition version) Frank Marino from It's Begun To Rain - The Agora dvd Brian Robertson's solo from Showdown - Thin Lizzy live in Dublin '75 Steve Hillage's opening solo from Not Fade Away
I remember the luthier that built my first custom guitar came back from allman Bros show and told me about this young boy maybe 10 yrs old playing slide guitar with the band and he said he was blown away and his name was Derrick trucks
I believe this was at the Hollywood Bowl, if so I was there. BB was so happy to see young folks who got it and could do it. John Mayer didn’t play that much,Derek was just on it. Great show, sadly BB died soon after.
My personal music preference is for harder music, with Meshuggah etc on high rotation, but this is the best piece of guitar ever played by a person, ever. That thing sounds like a human voice, a human voice! That swell is, Jesus Christ, it's surreal.
All your videos feel like I’m hangin out with you and we’re just two dudes nerding out over guitar and music. I’m glad you like this solo as much as I do. It’s been up there for me for years.
One of my personal favorites as well. If you haven't heard it yet, check out his live solo to down in the flood... most amazing thing I've ever heard on the guitar.
I've seen the DT / BB video before, but your take on this gave it a whole new meaning and made me understand something I didn't see before this.. Says a lot about you as a player - mad respect brother!
I want it to be noted that you CANNOT do that without a slider. That is the reason why it sounds like voice, yes there are a lot of other parts to it, but that's the main one.
I would argue that I have seen Guthrie Govan and Gary Moore do far more impressive solos than Derek Truck. He is good, but not in the same league as some others.
This video of Derek, Mayer, and B.B. had a profound effect on me. I was an aspiring beginner at guitar and I had never heard anything that beautiful. It still brings a flood of emotion.
I've seen Derek live 8 times. First time in '06 with Clapton and Doyle Bramhall. We walked in late and all I heard was this surreal sound that if someone told me is what you hear when you go to heaven I'd say, "yeah that makes sense". I've seen him with his old band once and then with TTB 5x. They are supernaturally good is all I can say.
Big Sky tip: best run maybe ever for me was a long blue cruiser, Merriweather, off of Six Shooter lift. 2 mile run that I recommend you hit as early as possible.
Oh, how fun to see this! This solo made me fall absolutely in love with his playing style. Unique stuff, really. Talk about making the guitar sing. Woo!
Saw Tedeshi Trucks last year. Definitely top 5 shows ever, maybe number 1. That band. He's so good, she is so good, but the BAND! They are just a force.
I can't get enough of Derek Trucks. I'm going to get to see him twice again this year. Note also that a lot of that microtonal stuff he gets from Indian raga playing.

Man, what a great video ! I have played for at least 50 years - not so much lately as a 65 year old dude - but I heard Live at Fillmore East when I was 12 or 13 and that album changed my life. Literally. Since then, I have been a fan of good, REAL, live music. My older son turned me on to TTB and I have seen them many times since and I agree wholeheartedly that they are the best live band in the land and have been for quite some time. Derek is the master that Duane might have become had he lived to a ripe old age RIP. What priceless musicians they both are ! I have a sweet1972 mahogany SG that I have had since I was 13 thanks to the ABB and it will be passed to my 2 sons who both play when I am gone.... As BB said, it doesn't get any better than that !
Man I love this clip so much. 🎸👀❤️ He is so effortlessly amazing. Stunning. Thanks for bringing it back up for me. Keep up the good work and the good fight Mike. Cheers 🥛 (milkshake)😁
Derek has the absolute best tone you can have! The best of the best wish they sound like that! He is literally Duane Allman reincarnated and it’s a pleasure to see and hear him!
There's a video of the Derek Trucks band featuring Susan Tedesci from a crossroads guitar festival many years ago where they play Any Day by Derek and the Dominoes. His phrasing on that is maybe the best I've ever heard.
The way Truck’s hands just drop off his instrument when he processes the fact that BB King just said “that’s about as good as I’ve ever heard it.” CHILLS.
The thing I've found is players like John or B.B. who have universal acclaim, respect the things they CAN'T do the most. Neither John or B.B. ever learned how to play slide guitar. They're in awe of Derek's skill with the slide, but also his choices. What he does with the slide. It makes the guitar talk. And when you can make the instrument talk in a way guys like that can't you get INSTANT and ULTIMATE respect.
So I guess a lot of the people on here have a better idea of what is good than BB King
You sir, get the pin.
Yes of course! Are you exclaiming BB King is the be all and end all when it comes to guitar? If you are you're insane
For real. You can say there are other performances that are better, but damn.
Could players like Clapton do this ???
BB King was an asshole.
As a man with many guitars, I don't "need." it's refreshing to see Derek always playing that sg and sounding better than everyone he plays with
SG!
He has a few different ones, but yeah, never seen him play something that wasn't an SG, with that iconic cherry red finish.
a great guitarist can make any guitar sound good... i'm pretty sure derek trucks could stretch a wire over a log and it would sound good
I have had the great honor of meeting Mr. King many years ago. I have had the great honor of seeing Derek Trucks a few times now, and when he goes off, it raises the hair on the back of my neck. Every. Single. Time. Just........ brutal. 🙏
Not to mention that Derrick is as down to earth as it gets. Humble, polite, family man and well spoken!
When you have BB and Mayer in awe…. You are a baaaadddd man!! Great vid pick Mike!
seeing him sandwitched between mayer and king, delighted by their admiring looks and encouraging words, is almost too much to take in. great moment.
He is so humble that it somehow makes this even better…
No question.
All the haters is crazy.
Let's see one...
Even one one single other do it.
🇺🇸😎🙏👍

You ever sat in on one of Mayer's lives? Dude is humble AF for how much talent is in that man.

John Mayer's persona is very much at odds with his excellent musicianship and mutual respect with the best musicians.
I love the reactions of BB and John. Great stuff.
The best!

Exactly what i noticed too. John was like nah ill just ruin it if i comp
Totally.
The sign of a great musician, knowing when NOT to play!

You know your a badass when you’re sandwiched between John and BB and somehow you’re the best guitarist at that given time
Unparalleled precision with a slide. Never sloppy or muddled. Every note rings out. Beautiful.
Derek Trucks is one of those "hidden" masters that many people really dont pay much attention to yet, when he can draw in Mayer and BB like this, he really is the master over the BLues World!
I just never get tired of watching this video! One of the best video on all of TH-cam

Saw DT at the War Eagle Supper Club in Auburn, AL when he was probably around 13 y/o. Dude was insane back then, and still is.
just WOW! you can't get much more perfect than that.
This give me goosebumps every time. I showed a student Derek Trucks today and this was my example. Thank you for showing the good stuff as always sir.
I can see tears in your eyes, the same ones I always have every time I watch this! ❤❤❤❤❤
Most every professional guitarist will declare that Derek Trucks is other planetary, there is absolutely no one else in his realm. Great review brother, this has always been one of my favorite clips, true admiration and so well deserved!
Besides the late great Duane Allman
Thank you, always love your love for Derek!
Derek is the reason I picked up a slide, 10 years later I'm still loving it. I'll always be in awe of his abilities. Thanks for the inspiration!
The combination of slide and fingers is just sublime!
One of the best solos ever for sure! Even crazier that it's improv and live! I remembere the first time I saw it I was in awe; still am!
Love the analysis of the nonverbals and the emotion of the moment. Always down to hear you talk about that stuff as well as the technical side.
BB was a Benevolent King. He was always happy to share the stage and recognize true greatness. I miss having him around. And Derek Trucks. I really have to catch him the next time he's in the area.

Michael your content is tremendous! You help explain the genius of guys like Derek Trucks so effortlessly…
Derek's tone is boosted by the fact he is such solid, humble dude!

We love you Michael. Thank you for your insightful breakdowns. Appreciate your passion.
Love you too my friend!
Awesome. This has been one if my favourite youtube guitar videos forever. I watch it almost once a week. So cool to hear your take on it. Thanks!
That’s a bold statement. “Best” is subjective.

I want it to be noted that you CANNOT do that without a slider. That is the reason why it sounds like voice, yes there are a lot of other parts to it, but that's the main one.
That's a great way to describe it, like a voice. Bcuz I would sing that.. I loved it. Thanks for picking it out. I love my solos!!
Praise from the best! Great video!
Brad Paisley had that same look on his face, playing with and watching Tommy Emmanuel play.
I would argue that I have seen Guthrie Govan and Gary Moore do far more impressive solos than Derek Truck. He is good, but not in the same league as some others.
My wife and I saw them at Wolf Trap last year . Best I've ever seen in concert .
Oh my I would love to see this band.

Just a thing of PURE JOY!!!
Oh, how fun to see this! This solo made me fall absolutely in love with his playing style. Unique stuff, really. Talk about making the guitar sing. Woo!
Beautiful!
Please do SRV - Texas Flood - Live at the El Mocambo...I cant image a world where this doesnt exist
Dynamics masterclass, always with DT. And just makes it siiiiiing - vocality📈off the chart
So stoked they added a Phoenix date to this tour AND that it's an indoor show to boot.
I may fly up to Seattle to see their two nights there.
Derek Trucks is the messiah of slide guitar, he makes guitarists eyes wet by the pure brilliance that comes out of his fingers
Remember this solo man it has to be one of the best if not the best
I found this channel a few months ago 😮 awesome
While I do love this solo, there is a live recording of one of his Harlem solos that makes this look like a warmup.
Respect to the masters. Blessed to have witnessed them both and to know that what I'm hearing is truly inspired. Thank you.
Totally agree! That solo is just out of this world!✌🏻
You have to check out Derek & Sonny Landreth's dueling slide guitars on "Congo Square," mind-blowing.
Derek is the best! Every time, I see the part where BB and Derek are looking at each other and BB compliments Derek, myneyes get a little misty. It is so a sweet and genuine moment. For Derek, it must have felt surreal to hear those words from BB.
I think jack pearson is about the only other person who could pull that off spontaneously.
Derek's a master of the tone and volume nobs. I had the pleasure of sitting about 10 feet in front of him at the London Palladium pre-Covid. I'm sure my jaw was in my lap most of the evening.
Derek is a GOAT! The part that blows my mind is his control of muting strings while playing at that level of intensity.
Man, what a great video ! I have played for at least 50 years - not so much lately as a 65 year old dude - but I heard Live at Fillmore East when I was 12 or 13 and that album changed my life. I have a sweet1972 mahogany SG that I have had since I was 13 thanks to the ABB and it will be passed to my 2 sons who both play when I am gone.... As BB said, it doesn't get any better than that !
Yeah MIchael, I’ve always thought that Derrick‘s solos reminds me of “Church Lady” vocals
Another great video Michael!
I'll also miss their upcoming shows in Baltimore and DC in early March but hope to catch them at Merriweather in August.
Man I love this clip so much.
🎸👀❤️
He is so effortlessly amazing. Stunning.
Thanks for bringing it back up for me.
Keep up the good work and the good fight Mike.
Cheers 🥛 (milkshake)😁
Great video as always. Love ur channel and what you do. Keep it up.
I agree the best..... Feeling like none other
He saved the ABB. He's "tapped in", he's not just "playing" the guitar.
This solo transcends the guitar and is just plain music. What every guitar player should aspire to...
I was there. Magical.
Hye michael, could you please put a link to the original video in your descriptions? Love the content as always.
Can we say the King has chosen his successor?
i’ve always loved this solo and i also love your videos and i was seriously waiting for you to do a video on this
And that is probably the guitar video of all time!!! Absolutely amazing work.

As far as blues solos go, I'd have to say Hendrix, Red House, Isle of wight.
The Hendrix, Blues album is outstanding. Anything by Johnny Winter from the 1970's, is a close second.
