YES! Mike Dawes, Tommy Emmanuel..... these guys are genius in how they not only create original, masterful music, but also take classics and put their own incredible "spin" on cover reproductions.
This variation on a theme is stellar, heartfelt, and magnificent. Eddie would be so proud that such an artist would thematically pay homage to him. It really is the best orchestration any arranger could accomplish with this rock treasure.
There are very few people in the world who can play like this and make it look easy and fun at the same time....reminds me of Eddie himself doing incredible things while laughing, jumping around and having fun. Fantastic Mike !
You look like you are about to burst into tears. I get it. Me too! This arrangement of Jump brings the song a whole new level of joy. It was already a fun happy song but my goodness this is so lovely I almost can't deal with it. Incidentally um...Jump is one of a single handful of songs that I never ever get tired of. I can listen to it over and over and over. I even have it as a ringtone on my phone for my alarm clock. I wake up to it every day.
I have to admit that I teared up listening and watching this performance. It made me miss Eddie even more that I already do. You spend so much time listening to someone the majority of your life that you feel like you actually knew them. Love your Channel, love this Mike guy that's playing in the video and God bless EVH!
That was so beautiful when you teared up. I love it when you help me appreciate something on a whole different level. I would have watched this Mike Dawes video and been amazed at the technical mastery of course but not really understood it or felt it. But through your eyes and ears I can absorb it in a way that affects my brain and my heart.
The one universal regret we will all have for eternity is wishing Eddie could've heard Mike's interpretation of this song. It's a masterpiece in and of itself. I wish so badly we could all know how it would've made Eddie feel as a guitarist and composer. I'm still driven to tears every single time I hear it.
Hearing this is one thing, but to watch him play this at the same time brings it to a whole other level. Goosebumps and tears. That's how good this is to me.
HOLY SH!T - I seldom "get it" when you describe the musical nuances in quite a few of your ALWAYS enjoyable videos ( MY fault by the way since I have limited musical training , no reflection on you ) - BUT - THIS TIME I GOT IT...I KNEW/HEARD WHAT YOU WERE TEACHING and WOW - THANKS SO MUCH for sharing this one...I AM STUNNED AT HOW GREAT and FUN THIS WAS !!!!!
One of the best tributes I've ever heard!!! Absolutely incredible!!! I love that he does the entire arrangement to include the lyrical notes and rythym!!!! I'm a drummer and have played this song a thousand times so to hear this version blows my frikin' mind!!!! Thanks for this, Man!!!
I love how dumbfounded you look at moments during this guys performance. I've been playing keys in various ways since I was 4, am now 50 years old, and still dumbfounded by what the modern guitarist's are doing. I am happy that there are still people pushing that envelope. Reinterpretations are so awesome.
I love watching you “watch” these other phenomenal guitarists, it’s vicarious magic; however, I don’t think you realize your true place in the guitar Universe: you are the Hubble telescope for the rest of us mere “G-C-D” mortals. I blew up my left hand and when I was 14, I’m 70 now, and have struggled to arrive at a James Taylor-ish kind of clone. I loved EVH. I was looking for some “Jump” versions and came across Mike Dawes, who was heretofore unknown to me. I binge watched him playing his version for over an hour, and even though my eyes and ears were engaged, my tiny little brain could NOT wrap itself around this. After I had vowed to burn my 900 Taylor and cut off both of my hands, I saw your video and was really touched. Thank you so very much for allowing us to view the Deep Field view of our Universe and understanding it just a little bit. I only found you 10 days ago, but I am a devotee. I truly hope Mike’s willing to come on with you, THAT would be stellar indeed. Thanks again for all your help, Steve.
It’s so moving to watch and listen a brilliant musician bring another musician and teacher to tears, you know you’re being treated to something very special. You don’t marry the one you can live with….marry the one you can’t live without!
Good to see, I'm not the only one getting emotional / into tears, while enjoying Mikes performance. This is so unbelievable good! A real hero on a (striped) 6 string!!!
Only recently discovered your channel and I'm HOOKED! (and subscribed) The absolute joy with which you not only take in these performances but then convey to a viewer what you are picking up on is a treasure for us, even for myself as a person who doesn't play but LOVES music and thinks of it as essential for my life. I'm moved by the way that you are moved....Thank you sir for taking the time to share with us, signed a very appreciative newly acquired fan, I feel lucky to be able to enjoy!
I’ve seen Mike play live. My dads seen him numerous of times and has always told me about him. He it simply incredible and watching him live is an experience I won’t forget. Let alone watching it with my dad who is the biggest lover of guitar playing and mikes work.
I know its often said so and so's cover of something is the best but I think this cover is truly the best I've ever heard. Gives you goosebumps seeing and hearing how amazing it is.
This is far beyond “covers” or “tributes”. With his incredible skills, Mike Dawes has created a mindblowing monument to this unique monument of pop music, and we can only bow in front of it.
Hey Michael - I don't play an instrument (yet) - but I love watching you react to sublime artists knocking it out of the park with such genuine emotion, love, and respect as much as I enjoy hearing the musicians you're in awe of. Love this channel. Always makes me smile and feel happier. :)
Stop it. Stop it. Stop it. I am 55 years old and you just made me break down and cry. This is one of the most beautiful arrangements I have ever heard in my life. Mike is a true Master of the guitar. Hand picked and blessed by GOD!
From one Michael to another Michael and a Mike. This was just so special, I savored it after restringing my guitar (a cheap Bad Cat semi hollow tele style) I just looked at the guitar for a minute or two after this ended..... and I stared in appreciation of what this wonderful instrument has given us.
His song "The Impossible"?? Its the most incredible guitar piece I've ever heard or witnessed. He has mastered the guitar in my opinion. A true gift to all us. Love you Mike
It's amazing to see how influential Hedges was, to the point where it seems that most people don't even realize that HE was the one who really created this style. Sure, there were the John Renbourns and Alex de Grassis that set him up, but it was Hedges' style that endured.
The fist time I saw your reaction was about 2 years ago. I have just re-watched it and it is STILL so beautifuL!! I'm not a guitar player, but I cried the first time I saw Mike do this magic. It is beyond complehension, and as you say - he's just so damned relaxed throughout!
What in the world? Jeeez. The skills are unreal. I was thrown back in the 80s listening to it. Huge grin on my face. Also I had DLR's voice in my head the whole time.
This video was so much fun to watch. We were both excited at the same parts so to see your enthusiasm matching my own was fantastic. Great song, great vid, keep it coming!
I agree 1000%! Mike Dawes is AMAZING! I'm actually starting to learn how to play this style of guitar as I'm a full-time musician and have been playing for 30 years. It's so unbelievably challenging, but also fun to push the boundaries of my musical skills! I actually booked a lesson with Mike for Dec. 13th over Zoom and I'm REALLY looking forward to it! :)
this made me cry, the perfection and grace that Mike Dawes approached and brought to light the amazing song writing of the genius known as Edward Van Halen. just simply amazing piece of master guitar, writing and performing. thank you Mike Dawes, and thank you for Michael Palmisano for bringing this to view!
I saw this vid when Mike released it shortly after EVH's death and then spent at least a half hour in stunned silence just trying to take in what I'd heard. I hadn't watched it again since as it left me so emotionally drained. Watching you reacting to this for the first time brought it all back in spades. Mike is a true genius. If you've never seen it, watch his version of 'Slow Dancing In A Burning Room' by John Mayer. Even without lyrics (like his version of 'Jump'), the whole song is there.
Thanks Mike for just a true genuine reaction. I love how you had your guitar with you ehile watching this and you just stared in awe like so msny of us. Seeing someone do something truly brilliant is one of life's smazing things. Thanks for sharing your reaction with us. You are such a passionate player and you just are a fan of music. Sweet as bro
An amazing performance, and a great breakdown of that performance; i had tears in my eyes at the exact same point as you Michael. You know when something is so unbelievably good, when someone has talent like you've never seen or heard before, that it moves you to tears?; that's exactly what this is. When my wife says "What are you crying for?", saying "He's just so f**king good!!!" just doesn't seem to do it enough justice!!!!!
11:28 I was thinking the same thing...so relaxed and fluid. It's like the music is an otherworldly being and has chosen Mike as his avatar and the sounds simply flow through him to the guitar. I got a real Stanley Jordon vibe listening to this.
Love ya for this. Been a fan of Mike for 5 years, and he is an amazing treasure and an incredible guitarist. His talant is astonishing, he is the greatest guitarist and teacher of our time. Namaste
Holly shit !! Dude ! I didn't even know that guy before. And he just made me cry in the subway in front of the others people. Fortunately I have to 😷 so it's not obvious. But how the hell can someone be THAT gifted !! It's a mistery of life. Thank you for sharing such a treasure.
I started playing guitar in 1999-2000 as a freshman in HS. My grandmother gave me her 86 Alverez yari acoustic and taught me G, D, C and A and a traditional bluegrass strum. I played non stop for 4 years, jammed out, giged around having a blast and then just put it down. Fast forward to last August, a wife and 2 kids later, at the height of the pandemic I got my Alverez from my parents house and haven’t put it down. Now my 6 year old plays with me and now I’m teaching her the same basic chords I was taught 21 years ago. Love you guys, never stop playing music 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Michael, I feel that's perhaps the definition of what a "musician" is. All of us feel moved by an amazing performance, but most of us are at a loss to express exactly WHY we we are moved. A musician is simply someone who can consciously understand what makes that piece of music great. Such a person becomes a technician, a wizard, a scholar, someone who takes the raw emotions all of us feel and knows how to get others to feel it with a specific combination of notes, chords, harmonies, and timing.
Mike's a master. I've been a fan of EVH since the very beginning, if that's saying anything about my age. I've also been a fan of Mike's since the beginning, meaning at least before most of my fellow guitarist buddies knew who he was. I may not have pursued a successful career in music, but I've always spotted the greats early on. This interpretation by Mike is impressive and moving.
I’m 45 and I have not owned a guitar during the entire time I’ve played. Alcohol and drugs took tons of nice gear from me and there were times were all I had was a hand me down Squire. This year I got a dean and boss katana and I’m so greatful for both.. even if u have been away come back to it and just play!!
"If it's not this, ima be pissed" .....I hear that, love the reaction, I was there with you man. Loved every second, and love seeing the look on your face as you saw it too. Kid in a candy store. Keep love and great music flowing everyone.
Those fingers!!! Every time I watch him play I can’t help feeling like he’s got some alien DNA there. What he does just doesn’t seem totally human. Amazingly fantastic playing, and with such ease! Technically perfect, but also beautifully, emotional and melodic. Simply stunning!!!
The player is fantastic. You did a fantastic job of explaining the magnet and a great break out of what is actually going on, as the great performance deserved. This is my favorite react I have seen you do. Excellent job!.

Thanks to both of you for inspiring me to dust my guitar off again
A trully beast.
But in an amazing way.
And with one brain for each finger.
You're absolutely mind blowing man, godamridiculous playing!
This is the final level of guitar. You become the entire band.
So on point. Play it as the whole band...to an audience of squirrels at sunset.

This is the tribute that Eddie deserved at the Grammys
Yes SIR!!!! Wow, totally in awe here... If this didn't move you, something is horribly wrong...
100%
Can we also appreciate that Mike arranged, executed, videoed, edited, and posted this video 20 days after EVH passed away. Holy moly....
I mean he's just so good. What an amazing tribute.
He’s really just so good.
Mike Dawes is on a nonhuman level
You are amazing Mike. How do you develop these Lines and chords ? What is your thinking process behind it?
Never expect Robert will comment here, seen Mr.Baker so many time in lots unexpected videos.
YES! Mike Dawes, Tommy Emmanuel..... these guys are genius in how they not only create original, masterful music, but also take classics and put their own incredible "spin" on cover reproductions.

Totally! Heaven touched Earth for a moment!
I had tears as well, funny what sound can do.

It's the best version I have heard ever!!
Mike Dawes is an absolute madman on the guitar. His cover of slow dancing in a burning room is the only one out of many I can never get tired of
I recommend Sungha Jung's version
I recommend Feng E’s version!
i recommend Mike Dawes's version🤪
All Good but Mike Dawes is God. 😀
I cried watching this. The transcription into one instrument with timely background strings is flawless.
If I don’t hear this softly playing in the waiting room at the dentist office in 25 years I’m going to feel ripped off.

Lost in all of this is the fact that dawes' pinky could go on *all* the fair rides 8 years before the rest of dawes
The player is fantastic. You did a fantastic job of explaining the magnet and a great break out of what is actually going on, as the great performance deserved. This is my favorite react I have seen you do. Excellent job!.
Amazing how this can give an entirely different emotion than the original.
That's amazing and beautiful. Thank you
