I have the 6a myself and it's definitely a camera where you have to tweak to get the aesthetics you want because it will favor blur and sharpening. Using night sight and the editing features do make up for it. Also helps to change the color features from either natural, boosted or adaptive depending on how punchy you want colors to be.

Most of these times I find myself preferring the Pixel shots especially just how dull it looks because I find it more salvageable, post production isn't that difficult and I think that's certainly Pixel's signature. But iPhone shots are really good with portrait and they've always been good with it since the beginning. It's making me start to believe that Google just tossed portrait for the sake of feature parity and they don't care that it exists anymore, considering they could've done a better job than this to be honest.

I like that you've compared phones from different price ranges, it shows whether or not budget phones can compete with higher end ones, and sometimes they're close enough that it's really not worth the extra $200-500 for a flagship. @@Atorpat Not when we are comparing cameras. Casual users aren't going to care about any phone camera. They use whatever comes with their phone. Plus, they haven't trained themselves well enough to see the subtle differences, anyway. The only ones who will care are those who intend some specific uses for their phone cameras. I want to know is my phone good at portrait mode? Is it good enough for landscapes? If not, what does work well.
As a new 6a user, who is likely to edit his photos in Photoshop or some other utility, I think the 6a is really good for landscapes (which is an interest of mine). it offers a wide dynamic range and less contrast, BUT that is what I want. I want to keep my editing options open, I can add the contrast myself. It is less good than the Apple for portraits, but for my useage it's likely good enough. I now know I can get what I'm looking for in the 6a, and not have to spend $$$ on a flagship phone.

Having watched a few of these, I can identify iPhone photos by their tendency to take more "flattering" pictures of human faces, by smoothing out skin textures. I prefer the more natural look Pixel phones give to faces and skin tones. However, iPhones render colours of non-human subjects more accurately - Pixels boost the brightness of shadowy areas so one can see more details than iPhone photos, but this can sometimes look unnatural and flat, also Pixels can oversharpen. Overall iPhones have more conservative processing leading to a more natural look, but I wish this also applied to faces.

Though I can disagree with a few of the results, I pretty much agree. While, as someone who ran a commercial photo lab for quite a few years, I could easily improve any of those images, the Nothing Phone leaves a lot to be desired. We can argue over color, contrast and exposure. But both the iPhone and the Pixel have more useful data to work with. The Nothing Phone would be almost impossible to fix with a number of the images just lacking the data.
Of course, I’m assuming these are just “out of the phone” jpegs. As such, which is the way most people will use them, in my experience, while the iPhone doesn’t always take the better picture in some way, on average, it does have a much higher hit rate, which, for most people, is what matters, as we can see here.
What would be interesting would be to see the quality of the images you can extract from these phones in RAW mode. Apple has that, and I believe the Pixel does too. I don’t know much about the Nothing Phone. But for those of us who are more serious, Apple RAW can make a big difference.

Apparently, it’s an “enhanced” feature that you can’t disable! I’m not a pro photographer, but I know enough to see when AI is tweaked WAY too much, which results in completely unrealistic photos. I wouldn’t touch an iPhone 14 until they make this feature able to be turned off. It was really bad with low iso photos, where they try way too much to enhance the picture because of the lower light.
