My sisters Ionic 5 had a monster problem when she got it. It knocked out anything it was plugged into charge. She thought it was her being too dumb to work out to charge. After not charging at a few chargers in town, she tried my mums home charger and tripped her power. As she was running low she took it back to the dealer and blew out their bank of chargers. She had her car for a week and lost it for 3 months it took to repair. To add injury to insult, the chargers that I could use for free that were nearest to me were out for three months after she tried to use them. The dealers were out for a few weeks too, so her ionic 5 was doing a real job on them.

This is very interesting indeed. A lot of public chargers have issues and I never considered it could be the actual EVs that are breaking them - everyone just assumes the chargers are crap. Then again, there’s still perhaps some truth to this - the chargers should have more protection from cars that attempt to zap them!

I follow this channel because I had an interest in getting an EV. The more I see this and other sites, I’ve concluded it makes no sense to get one of these things at this time. I’ve owned several Hondas over several decades and driven each of them to over 250,000 miles with zero problems. I just bought two more. The continuous problems and limitations of EVs just make no sense to me. Way too many unknowns and inconveniences. Sticking with gas. It just works.

    • @KevNpton
      @KevNpton 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@JimSiverts I don’t think you can knock it on one bad example. I had a Renault Zoe on a monthly rolling lease for months, and wouldn’t buy because I didn’t think it was value for money, but it worked OK. I’ve now had an MG4 for a year and it’s a beautiful drive, it’s in the same price range as Ford Focus. If I was comparing them strictly as cars, the range of a Ford Focus is 347 miles and my MG4 is 283 miles. The MG has a bigger interior and smaller boot, and leaves the Focus in the dust for performance. I don’t know how much a service or petrol is now, but my first MG service was £88 and because I charge at home it costs about £7 to do 350 miles (Focus full tank).

Here in America, they fixed this. Software update that prevents overvoltage issue in the ICCU. About an hour or less at the dealer and the problem is solved. Some of the issues WERE caused by customers using 3rd party apps that dinged the car THOUSANDS of times a day in some cases which drained the battery. The coolant leak issue was very small and confined to Korea, I believe.

    • @nigelcharles511

Hyundai also had an issue with the 12V battery discharging. The issue was apparently repeated queries by the wireless system to check on software versions of multiple applications. Limiting queries to just a few per night have addressed this issue apparently.

Yes, I had to add wiper fluid a couple of times! 😛 And yes, had to replace the windshield due to rock strikes. But zero warranty issues. I am one of those that had the dead 12v battery problem. I had my 2022 Ioniq 5 for exactly 7 months when my problem developed.
Now this may be difficult for some to believe (but sadly it's true) - my car was at my dealer for exactly 6 months until it was repaired.
I had a loaner the entire time, but it was an ICE car and I had to pay for gas, when I should have be given another electric car (which comes
with 2 years of free charging). I hired a law firm and filed a lemon law suit, and even with representation, my lawsuit is still not settled after over 9 months.
Hyundai Corporation has been horrible and just ignoring my lawyers requests to complete the process. I don't know if all car companies are like Hyundai and
drag things on and ignore requests to settle. I am now happily driving my second Tesla Model Y - I sold my first one to buy this Ioniq 5 which turned out to be
a huge mistake. Now happy again with my Tesla. I've had to keep insurance on the Ioniq 5 for nearly the past year even though I was not driving it.
I have owned about 5 Hyundai Sonata's over the years, and 2 Genesis G80's, and WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER HYUNDAI/KIA PRODUCT AS LONG AS I LIVE.
This has been and continues to be a horrible experience. Hope you never have to use the lemon law.

My Kia Niro 2022 bricked at one year, saying it needed to be towed to dealer. They said 12v battery was discharged. Soon after that, started getting 12v battery low warnings. The dealer took the car and gave it back to me in 6 weeks. They did massive diagnostics and decided to just change 12v after all that. Car bricked again 2 months later. That was repaired, but now EV indicator light is always on, and local Kia dealer has 6 week backlog in service appointments.

Clearly others are having horrible experiences with the cars. Hyundai does good cop/bad cop in the past. Ive had several of their cars with excellent experience except for the first. Took a year to solve a no start on the Elantra but afterwards golden. Sometimes they stonewall and others (the first EPA scandal) they come clean real fast and delight the market.

My Kia EV6 is now also 18 mo old with almost 24k miles. Just hit the issue with the 12V battery which all of a sudden went dead. Interestingly right after a voluntary software update. I recharged it, the dealer then tested it and said it was in excellent health. A week later the same issue again - had to have it towed to the dealer, who kept it for almost a month now to wait for a replacement 12V battery. Got the vehicle back, drove home to charge it and the charge flap wouldn’t open anymore. Back to the dealer for a quick fix… last 30 days only in/out of the dealership - very frustrating. Let’s see how the saga continues. If this happens again I’ll file a lemon lawsuit.

There is another potentially related problem which has just occurred on my Ioniq 5 (in the UK). After 11 months the AC charging has stopped working properly - it charges ok on 7.2kW for 10-15 mins then cuts out. Restart the charging and the same thing keeps happening.
Using an obd scanner shows the VCMS (vehicle charging management system) is heating up while charging. It rises to 100°C then cuts out. Wait for it to cool a bit, restart charging, it reliably cuts out when the temp rises to 100°C again.
After some experimenting it seems I can charge continuously at the 60% rate (4.2kW), but not at 90% (6.4kW).
This is an issue for me as I have no home charger. I can charge at work, but time on the chargers is limited, so it is hard for me to get enough charge. I have to go spend time on dc fast chargers (dc charging works ok), which is expensive in the UK.
This issue has been well documented in the US (see The Ioniq Guy). Why it should be happening after 11 months of no problems, including charging at 11kW, seems strange.
Dealer visit is scheduled for Oct so we'll see what they say.

Unless Hyundai/Kia have two separate problems associated with the 12v battery I believe that, on the few occasions it happens, the 12v battery is being discharged and damaged by the onboard 12v charge unit. This has happened three times to our 2020 Kia Soul EV. After the first time I fitted a 12v battery monitor which subsequently captured interesting symptoms. For us the common factors are in winter, overnight and without any external charging. The symptoms were the voltage on the 12v battery jumping between about 8v and 17v for most of the night. Next morning the car was totally dead. This is not good for the 12v battery and will significantly shorten its life. After our second failure Kia changed the battery and charged us £95. So much for their 7 year warranty! They claimed they only provide a 2yr warranty on that part. After complaining to Kia UK and pointing out that after market batteries often come with a 4yr warranty they eventually refunded me. My symptoms prove that this fault has nothing to do with owners and if I as an owner can produce graphical proof of symptoms they could at least take an interest in what I have discovered. As it is, as this is only happening to a few cars, nothing will be done.

Dear Electric Viking - this is valuable information... but you have to go to 9 mins in the video to get to the point
And even then, you have to listen to it 3 or 4 times because your narrative is so disjointed.
Can't you please get to the point in the first minute or two, with emphasis on clarity and precision?
After all, that is precisely - precision and clarity - why Tesla EV cars are so popular, not the mumbling incoherence
of not having your car work for four plus months until Kia/Hyundai get around to fixing their new vehicles.

Other reviewers claim the Atto 3 is HORRIBLE and DANGEROUS. Dunno. When you floor it, do you feel terrible "torque-steer" as others have claimed?

    • @jimgraham6722
      @jimgraham6722 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@almostthere100 For its size and weight the Atto is a powerful vehicle (150KW). If you are in sport mode (unrestricted torque) and floor it in a turn, you do get torque steer. For experienced drivers who can anticipate it, it is not a problem. However, it could be a big trap for inexperienced drivers. On slippery roads in particular, with the vehicle's low rolling resistance (not very sticky) tires, you could quite easily spin out.
In straight line torque steer is not a problem and in the sport mode Atto can easily burn off most ICE vehicles if that is the way you get your kicks.
If I was training a young learner driver in the Atto I would take care to ensure they understand the nature of torque steer and how to keep out of trouble.
In the Atto's normal and eco mode torque steer is not a problem as power onset is restricted.
Of course, the Atto is not a sports vehicle, if you want that you had better get a Tesla M3 Performance.
The Atto is however, a very comfortable well appointed family hack. It is much easier to get in and out (for oldies). It has excellent fit and finish and is much better accessorised than the Tesla. Drive it as it is supposed to be driven and you will have a great drive.

It is part of Tesla's marketing strategy. They are rogue and not mainstream and musk made it that way by choice. The big conglomerates are all about image control, being mainstream, and having control over who says what about their name. That's how Google and today's internet works. Big companies get special treatment and they pay money to stay safe, anyone who doesn't pay or have the power to do something, doesn't get those luxuries. Even worse you can't be seen online if you're not paying money, good or bad.

I agree with Sam that the Kia and Hyundai EV issues are much bigger and complicated to fix. With Tesla most of their issues are solved with an easy and quick software update which do not require bringing the Tesla in for repairs. With Kia and Hyundai it appears to be more a hardware and design issue or issues, which requires extensive and expensive repairs in the shop with long delays for Kia and Hyundai customers. I think Kia and Hyundai need to provide their customers with courtesy EV's for free until their EV's are fixed.
Blaming customers for issues related to poor hardware and design issues is not right for it shifts the blame when it should be an internal matter at Kia and Hyundai management.

Can it have anything to do with the american 2 phase charging on Ioniq 5; in europe we use the 3 phase charging and I havn't read af many ICCU faults in europe?

I asked a similar question of someone in the US. They use single phase 48A whereas in the UK, we're *almost* exclusively also single phase but at 240V so max current is 32A. It seems the issue is with the higher current in the US. I could be wrong though.

What if you attach a battery charger to the 12V battery and plug it into a 110 V plug on the car?
Would that keep the 12 V battery charged and eliminate the problem?

My friends brand new 2023 Sante Fe Hybrid looses power while driving once in a while. A dangerous problem. Hyundai took the car for repair, they do not know what is happening so they say they have to keep the car for over a month. They did give him a loaner car, a small gas powered one.

Yes, servicing is so overrated. Easy money for dealers.
On an ICE car, change engine oil every six months, and brake pads every 18 months, and tap the dust out your air filter, and it's all you need.
Get used to doing it yourself, and it soon becomes second nature.
Never change brake fluid myself, and never had an issue.
In fact when I used to have a company car and it was sent for servicing (not by me), half the time it would come back with an issue, or running like crap

I have an Ioniq 5 since 15 months now. It’s normal that everyone in this forum will talk about the issues they had, and I wish that your problems wil be resolved ASAP. From what I heared, it’s a handful of Ioniq 5 that had the issue with ICCU, isn’t it? In my case, I had no issues. I like the super fast charging 350 kw/h (try to beat that Tesla! 🤪).

I thought the ioniq 5 an interesting EV, but bought a Tesla Model Y. I considered possible service issues and decided a Tesla Service Center is only 10 miles away, and the factory is only 400 miles away. It’s not thousands of miles away, across an ocean. I know EVs are supposed to be low maintenance, but until they have proved themselves (even new models), you need to err on the side of caution. So far, the Tesla is fault free after 18 months and 18,000 miles, which is what I hoped would be my experience. I’m hoping this car will remain trouble free for many years.

Adding some sidenotes to your story about bad Hyundai´s.... Hyundai's recall includes the 2023 Tucson, Sonata, Elantra and Kona vehicles, as well as 2023 and 2024 Palisade cars. Kia's recall covers 2023 Soul and Sportage vehicles, as well as 2023 and 2024 Seltos models. Don´t need to mention on that case, only the Kona is also a probably EV.
