  • House of the Dragon season 2 episode 3 brought us to Harrenhal and showed us one of the best examples of weirwood magic from any of the HBO game of thrones/Westeros shows.
I needed to get a quick reaction out to the fact that there are weirwoods in the walls as it is something very relevant to several things I have talked about before.
Some videos I mention in this video, or that you might enjoy watching next...

Considering the Ironborn connection to Harrenhal, "what is dead may never die" seems to apply here to the downed Weirwood beams creating the structure of the castle. A dead thing, that has not stayed dead.

A lot of people died at that castle. If weir woods use blood to fuel growth, there's been thousand of souls that perished there. It looks like roots so I wonder if the top like leaf looking part is necessary or it connects deep underground all the way to the Gods Eye. (No comma, plural) They got to go somewhere.

I think there's also something to this, but I'd add that Harren the Black is also said to have put his own blood into the mortar at Harrenhal, so if true that would mean that every wall in the place has blood in it. I do wonder if the roots follow the blood, and that's why it's growing up into the walls. After all, Harrenhal isn't like the Wall or Winterfell or Storm's End, which are thousands of years old, it's only about 300, which is enough time to go to ruin, but not enough time for a single tree to just naturally grow through all its walls. Maybe weirwoods grow bigger and faster when they get more blood? Hard to say. I do think that the proximity to the Gods Eye is a lot of why Harrenhal is so overgrown. Even in places with wilder weirwoods we don't see them getting that big without some sort of magical concentration/effort (like the wall and the Nightfort).

What percentage chance of success did her trip to kings landing have? Zero? .01%? Feels like a big waste of time nobody was interested in.

Having gotten into growing mushrooms lately, there is so much going on here that feels like mushrooms. You can take a piece of most mushrooms, just cut a chunk of it and put it into a petri dish and it will start its life cycle over again and grow mycelium. Mycelium is the true nature of mushrooms, they are little white strands that connect and grow and get stronger with other mycelium and they form a living mat. Just under the ground they wait for the right conditions (temperature, moisture, and the evaporation of moisture) tell the mycelium when to fruit, so they send up this fruiting body which has one job. Build a structure almost instantly (overnight) that can support a ton of weight, holds a ton of water, and are specialized at transmitting information (spores) and protecting that information from the world with the cap, another engineering marvel almost universally. what if were dealing with some type of mushroom here? or fantasy hybrid that blends real ideas?

An interesting thing is that the weirwood face in Harrenhal looks MAD, a hateful look, if i remember correctly, it's Arya who describes it. And then, everything that happens in Harrenhal gets screwed up like Jaime's admission into the Kingsguard, the houses and characters who held it (Tywin, Aemond, Robb, Ser Gregor, Vargo Hoat...), everything that came out of the Tourney at Harrenhal and resulted in the toppling the Targaryen dynasty, Robert's reign itself, the lives of the Strong bastards, Viserys's reign that resulted in the gradual extinction of dragons. What if the curse is the work of the Old Gods actively working in their own agenda or simply being disgusted at the works of men and dragon alike, cursing them just because?

@@lillybullen5374It kinda seems to be related to the First Night, with bastards born from it being given to the old gods/Others, like Craster.
Harrenhal itself is a huge symbol of the weirwoods being corrupted in some way, with all the blood sacrifice stuff and now zombie weirwood roots, so the bastards there are symbolically important for the Old Gods (like Jon is, or Gilly's baby).
Even the Gargon the guest thing, where he did the First Night too much and got killed by the smallfolk in the godswood, is similar to the human sacrifice Bran sees to the Winterfell weirwood.

It adds a lot of interesting ideas about Harren the Black.
The engraving on the chair makes me almost wonder if he was working with the Green Men on the Isle of Faces, which could be backed up by potentially using Weirwoods or Weirwood planks in construction. My initial thought was that the Green men wouldn't condone any chopping of weirwoods for planks, but if they knew these planks would 'survive' to sprout roots in the castle, they probably wouldnt mind. I also definitely think that the proximity to the Isle of Faces has to do with how there is both so many roots, and why they are potentially so high.
Potentially the engraving could also be implying that Harren thought himself better than the green men, and it was made mockingly. Which seems more like his personality type.
If he did know about potential Weirwood wards against magic, it would explain his absolutely insane arrogance about how his castle would stand up to dragons. Obviously it could stand up to most armies, but any idiot would realise a dragon is a whole different ballpark. But if he thought the wards of the weirwoods would stop the magic of dragons, he might've thought that it would also stop their fire.
As to how he would think that the weirwoods were a magic ward. I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact his Brother was Lord Commander at the wall. Just to tie this all into your idea of the Weirwoods in the wall being a barrier. If his lord commander brother had some evidence or belief to that effect, the information might've made its way to Harren. He might've put some pieces together and assumed since Brandon the Builder built the Wall, Winterfell and Storms End, that the common factor might be weirwoods. So he thought that was a crucial component to a magical barrier. Might also even explain why he built it at the Gods Eye as well, with such a proximity to the Isle of Faces.
Though this all makes him seem a bit more Learned than is projected about this tyrant, so Im probably overthinking things, haha.

The blood magic that powers these structures is inherently evil, and so, as Michael has theorised, that the Old Ways is an evil form of magic that should be changed.

It kind of makes Harren a much more fascinating figure in my view, a figure of Iron Island lineage that ventured heavily onto land and might've intentionally constructed this mammoth castle with Weirwood. I'm very curious to see what might be done with the Ironborn down the road.

Also, I'm reminded of the mycelium of fungi (example: mushrooms are just reproductive parts while the mycelium is the nutrient and communication system we usually don't see). IIRC, they've been known to connect the root systems of trees, and along this network trees can communicate info such as drought, disease, infestation, etc. And then trees can divert resources to nearby suffering trees as needed via their system. There are other pathways of communication, too, like air, using pheromones. We've seen responses such as suddenly changing the taste of leaves.. And using pheremones or other scents to attract the predator of a pest.

One thing to note, re: potentially the cut beams of weirwood being still living within the walls of Harrenhal ... we know that weirwoods don't truly "die" like most trees, they slowly petrify over time and eventually turn to stone over the course of a couple thousand years (according to the Blackwoods with reference to the tree at Ravenhall at least)... since Harrenhal is only 300ish years old, then it's possible that those "dead" weirwoods could still be "living" plant matter that can sort of resurrect itself if it comes in contact with still-growing tree tissue... so perhaps the weirwood in the godswood has grown its root systems just far enough to connect with the base structures of the castle, and then it can take over the beam structures and begin sprouting new roots anywhere in the castle

I don’t know whether they thrive about places of magical significance, or if they determine the magical properties of their location; like the haunting of Harrenhal, or warding of the Wall and the cave. It’s just the way the roots have grown and twisted through the cursed walls that seems as if the trees are leeching from them. I know the trees are supposed to be conduits or idols for the “old gods” so they are magic in their own right and they used to be widespread, but once planted they seem to thrive in some places untended.

It could be that people have always used the weirwood roots for warmth in winter, and built their homes and castle around them since they were already there (Bran the Builder maybe using magic to make weirwoods grow enormous for harrenhal, winterfell, the wall). It could be that knowledge of this on-going tradition is - just like the origin of the blackwood/bracken blood feud - "lost to time".

I think it was a good episode. Could have lived without the last little stealth mission. But at the same time we got Harrenhal with roots growing out of the walls all over it and crazy weirwood magic dreams. The isle of faces was shown when they didn't have to. I see a lot of signs they are leaning into the magic from this episode and we should get some really good lore from the series. So I am happy.

17:17 When I saw that in the show, I immediately thought of Garth the Green. I assumed it was an homage to him...whether it was an ORIGINAL piece of furniture from Harren's time OR brought in later & it's weather-worn or other "cursed" events damaged it, Im not sure.
For me, bc the Weirwoods can hold Souls -- aka "life energy/force", I feel like even if you cut them down/into pieces, they still "live" & within the 40yrs it took to build the castle, LOTS of literal blood/sweat/tears/lives were lost (or sacrificed) to the place to keep them "alive", as well as all the rain to water them.
Without spoiling anything, if the leaks are true, we get more insight into Harrenhal & the weirwoods.

The roots of the weirwood tree reached out to consume all the blood in the aftermath of Aegon and his dragon. In doing so it reintegrated all the logs and thus the roots climbed through the walls of the tree and consumed all of the blood. I’m sure the dragonfire plays a part here too somewhere

You’d be extremely surprised how far uphill tree roots can travel!
Tge reason they do it is seeking water or nutrients, homes on hill tops wit big garden especially ones that irrgate a lot may have roots climb right up there and deplete tge garden in a mater of a few years. Few trees roots really span 100’, but given the right conditions they could crawl that far as long as they were being rewarded with enough water/nutrients.
Weir woods don’t really seem that tied to water and nutrients tho, but I’m sure they wouldn’t waste the energy to climb that far for nothing

The Weirwood trees outside sent its roots under the castle walls in search of the wood that was cut from the old trees, and when they find them they "REANIMATE" the cut wood to start growing again. OR the roots of the old trees that were felled are searching for their missing parts.

Maybe that’s a parallel to George’s glass candle idea where as as long as someone is connected to their candle they can’t die, but if the candle is removed from the web or destroyed it may make the user vulnerable. I’m just spitballing here

If there are dead weirwood branches built into the walls, perhaps the living weirwood tree we see is essentially "re-innervating" the dead branches with its own living roots to expand its reach. Ik trees don't work like this irl but these are magical trees so the rules are different lol

  • @KarlKarsnark

Big if true. Bat guano is amazing fertilizer IRL and the fact that it's always leaking means it's ideal for the trees to grow, just from a practical point of view. Not to mention the proximity to the God's Eye itself where WWs obviously thrive. It seems as if the roots are effectively neurons/blood vessels growing into the structures so they can spread their mojo into every nook and cranny. Tree roots are amazingly powerful and can split stone, crack patios, deform asphalt, etc.....just a matter of time. Decades may seem like a long time to people, but it's a blink of an eye to the trees. Cheers!

I believe that you can't kill a weirwood by cutting it down or by "processing it", they seem not to require sunlight and such. We also see a bunch of weirwood arrows and bows that seems to be enchanted in some way or at least responsible for "important kills" (blood raven anyone?). Maybe, cut down weirwoods used in weapons and construction are still alive, and able to produce magic.

Isn’t their lore about ships made of wierwood also? It seems to me the Andre’s and first men were chopping down all the sacred trees because they had magic and were super useful. Also fyi I’ve heard woodworkers that have willow or uwe wood logs in storage that they sometimes start to grow roots. So it’s a thing that actually happens with some.

If weirwoods *were* a protective feature of castles, it didn't do anything to protect Winterfell from Theon Grayjoy or Ramsey Snow, nor did it protect Harren Hore from Aegon the Conqueror so IDK what kind of "magic" that would be.

Some trees will grow even if you cut them down to their stumps. Say, a willow tree. All you need is a small stump with a little bark on it, and it'll come back. My neighbour cuts down their willow often, and it restores itself after about a decade.
So rather than the weirwood beams growing, perhaps its the stumps.
That said, the weirwood in the harrenhal castle, it's unclear how this develops the narrative of the story.

Something seems off. House Hoare welcomed the Andals and brought their fate to the islands, this might be a sign of religious tolerance, but I'm unconvinced. How would they know how to build it like that?
We don't know a lot about Harren the Black or house Hoare in general but it seems unlikely they had this ancestral knowledge. They ruled over the Riverlands and at some point the Arbor, Old Town, Bear Island and other parts of the North's west coast. It seems unlikely that they found written records in the North as they would have been in the Old Tongue, though maybe they did find translated texts from the citadel. This is still dubious though since Old Town was no longer ruled by the Hoares at the time of the conquest, and hadn't been for a long time.
Anothe explanation would involve the Blackwoods or house Bracken. The former have a clear connection to the weirwoods and the Old Gods, but they initially led the defence against the Iron Islanders. They would not have given away their secrets or married into the line. House Bracken on the other hand helped the Hoares and seems to have some memory of Old God magic, considering they likely poisoned the Blackwood's heart tree.
Still something must have gone wrong, either it wasn't magically completed or they lacked the knowledge to do the proper spells. As Balerion attacked from above, meanwhile Dragons refuse to fly over the wall out of fear of being ripped apart like Orell's eagle.
I'm eager ro find out more, but I lean towards the Brackens being somehow involved.

The whole Harrenhal is kinda weird in HOTD. So making theories about it is kinda iffy
Why is it even falling apart? the castle is like 2 centuries old that's nothing. Yes Aegon burned or rather melted it but why are the remaining structures crumbling? When Caraxes lands the stones fall apart under him and I don't get why. The melted stone should arguably become even stronger and the parts that weren't melted should be just fine. The castle isn't old
It doesn't make a lot of sense
More to the point the weirwoods were added to the show as fan service already. A weirwood in the red keep makes no sense but they put it there because they do everything they can to show that HOTD is in the same universe as GOT
My point is it can be something but it can also be nothing
