The funny thing is, Savathun's never really had any open revilement for Humanity as a species insofar as I know; she doesn't seem to have the same taste for zealous genocide that her sister does. I don't think she finds much intrinsic value in our kind, but by the same token I can't find any source that states any true hatred for mankind. I don't think Savathun has any more love or hate for us than she does for the Fallen or the Cabal or any of the other unnamed countless races she's aided in destroying before. It was always just a means to an end, never anything personal. That having been said, it is also my belief that the Witch Queen has gotten tired of her long dedication to the Deep for more reasons than the drawbacks on its power. I think she's sick of it; the death, the destruction, the "Final Shape" nonsense. There are Altar of Reflection entries wherein she openly ponders the pointlessness of being the only one left to witness the majesty of the universe, and of how interesting she found the lives of those around her during her time as Osiris in the City. And really, doesn't that just make sense when you look at who Savathun is?
I find it hard to believe a being as old and thoughtful and wizened as Savathun could serve an entity like the Witness for so long and not see the pointlessness in the Final Shape. To not recognize the emptiness of the endeavor to destroy suffering by destroying anything that has the capacity to suffer. Toland was once quoted in an analysis of the Hive's dependency on their worms to have said, "They have missed the point of being dead". Yet in a twist of irony, the most cunning Hive of all seems to have realized that the Witness has missed the point of being alive. Time will tell whether or not she becomes a true ally to Humanity, but I think it's fair to say that Savathun is getting tired of being our enemy.

My theory is that Savathun did this with a whole bunch of families, and the chant was how she interfered with the Collapse. I think the Witness was going to destroy the Traveler during the Collapse and Savathun hid it somehow. There wasn't really any deal made, it was the equivalent of seeing a fly banging into a window and opening it to let it outside instead of killing it. To the family, this was an impossibly generous act that saved their lives, something that will surely carry a heavy debt that will one day have to be collected. To Savathun, this was the most insignificant action she could've taken in the scenario behind not doing anything.

With how good Savathune is at 'predicting' things I think she may have foresaw a time where she would need someone inside the city. Maybe to help her accomplish things, or retrieve something. If that chant or the deal made could bind the bloodline to her then she may have found a way to retrieve her captured body for her hive ghost to rez her at a particular time. Possibly when the vanguard and the guardians are occupied with a new and more powerful enemy? This is all speculation but it would also fall well within her normal crazy abilities to prepare for darn near anything.

    • @elaron2537
      @elaron2537 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

This was also my thought. I can see Immaru or some other agent of the Hive coming to the Rigby family and collecting this debt in the near-ish future. They'd need to give them the means to recover Savathun's corpse, or enact some distraction for the Vanguard / the Hidden so it can be recovered by other means. Given how the City's security has been easily penetrated in the past by various groups, this feels very possible.

They were chanting the song and that was pulling the "star" closer to earth. I believe that the "star" was actually the traveler.
The darkness and the fleet came to destroy the traveler but the family essentially performed a ritual to pull it towards earth, hiding it as a result. Savathun was then able to lie to the witness about traveler's escape and darkness left only to be summoned again when traveler reawakened - destruction of Ghaul. Savathun couldn't perform the ritual because the witness would surely notice but a family of humans could. That family probably founded the last city - the last city is in debt to Savathun.

Byf, One of the constellation Lore i believe from the point of view of the Traveller states: "You are drawn to a small Planet following a song. Was It your idea all along?"
Savathun's song matches the tempo and syllables of this one Sean Rigby was told. So It can be the true Savathun's song.
Conclusion: Savathun had the humans humm Savathun's song, which compelled the Traveller to decide to make its Last stand on Earth rather Than anywhere else. And its from here that she tricks the Witness into believing the Traveller is dead. The Rigby family were simply pawns, and the debt she has with them might have been getting the Traveller into position or she never needed them again. Maybe her plan Only would work if the words were spoken by a human, and Rigby would be a perfect fit, a desperate man Who would Accept to make a "deal with the devil" Ultimately I dont think the Rigbies Will have any impact in the Lore from now on, more so It fleshes out that Savathun did something to the humans that drew the Traveller closer
Then id go on a limb to say that indirectly Savathun is the reason guardians exist in the first place, since the Traveller then uplifted humanity as a weapon, creating the guardians.

I remember when I first got the shell and was mind blown reading this. I don't think she knew exactly what would happen or if there would be a last city, but she knew the traveler would possibly protect humanity and it was her way of either keeping tabs on humanity to observe the traveler or have some kind of influence so that she could find a way to vicariously benefit from the traveler through humanity. One thing I'm sure of is that this interaction lead to her influence in the city such as the spread of her song among the children and people outside the tower, which there's no telling how long or how deep her influence ran before we became aware of it or throughout the Last City's history. She could have had some kind of influence on the Consensus this whole time. We definitely need more history and lore on humanity as well as the Last City as a whole in general.

If I’m understanding this correctly, this bargain was struck before the First Collapse, meaning before the guardians were created.
My theory is that the “debt” that the Hive was referring to May have been Osiris.
Osiris in his past life may have been a member of this “Rigby” family, and when he was resurrected as a guardian, she may have reclaimed her debt with the use of Osiris. She gets a key position in the Tower, and learns of the secrets of the Light.

There are people who lived through the collapse, but the only notable one we know of is deceased, The Speaker. In Constellations, he mentioned "Grainy Footage of Venus being terraformed". I feel that Savathûn wouldn't pick someone random, she would pick someone with a "Gift". Being able to receive "dreams" from the Traveler is certainly a gift. But the problem with our Speaker is that there is no mention of his family in any capacity, only his mentor. While there are other "Speakers" he is the only one that is known to have survived the Collapse. Though my idea may - or may not - be the closest thing to an answer to who "Sean Rigby", it still is a tangled mess of red string, about as much validity for it as saying "Xûr is Sjur Eido because their names are similar".

    • @spectrex

The Constellations lore book is written from the perspective of many different Speakers, the one talking about seeing Venus get terraformed being the first. The Speaker who appears in the games has some entries later in the book, where he mentions being "the child of two self-exiles," which probably means he's the son of two Earthborn Awoken.

One question I have that remains unanswered (as far as I know) is this: Where did Savathun stash Osiris when she took his form?
As best I can tell, right at the end of the Season of the Lost she swapped places with wherever Osiris was so that Mara Sov couldn't kill her. Additionally, we get that cutscene of Savathun talking to the Traveler as she dies before she is resurrected by Imaru, which had to have happened right after Season of the Lost and before the start of Witch Queen. To me, it looks like she's just on a cliff just outside of the Last City, with a great view of the Traveler in that cutscene. Just outside the city....just like a certain Rigby family?? Maybe the "debt" has already collected by having the Rigby family stash Osiris while she took his form right under our noses, a family that is loyal to her but we assume would be on our side.

Just because the Rigby family lived close to the city on a cliff and Savathun was close to the city on a cliff once doesn’t mean anything.

All from different directions, all pointed towards the traveller, all told the same or a similar chant. All marching toward the soon-to-be last city creating a planetwide geomantic spell across the planet all culminating in the moment they reach the last city and suddenly to the witness the traveller seems to have disappeared... That you can look at someone and as soon as you turn around you forget they were there at all (What happened with Shaxx and the Ahamkara skull). Savathun on her own could not fathom to cloak the Traveller. But an entire city (or Many people) , all of them singing the same cloaking spell? The combined potency of the spell would have enough to trick the Witness once. Shrouding the Traveller

If I had to make a guess, I'd say the Rigby family held some sort of role in the formation of the Last City, which the Traveler resides above after the collapse. Savathûn clearly had an interest in the Traveler back during the Collapse, so by letting the Rigby family know where the Traveler would descend down to Earth so they can make the Last City underneath it, it could be seen as a sort of marker for future reference of the Traveler's location. As for the chant, it could be something that lets Savathûn know that the deal has been upheld and that the City still stands, and therefore the Traveler is still there, so that she could enact her plan to receive the Light centuries later. Obviously there are holes in this idea, but it seems like the most sensible hypothesis for why Savathûn would make such a random deal

I'd wager that whatever that chant was is what was needed.
Savathûn is... was always several steps ahead.
Until she comes to collect, that family is singing to the traveller. Back right before the collapse, desperate humans walked towards it, singing a hive song.
Savathûn wove a spell around the Traveller to steal it, and her magic is often filled with deception.
Savathûn deceived the Witness during the collapse, too.
It is entirely possible that, given how paracausal forces embody intent and follow will, she needed or benefitted from people doing things knowingly, willingly, but not understanding them. Or thinking they were doing something for one reason, when it was for another. Maybe the deception of someone into being part of the spell is a necessary part of the spell.
I'd wager that the debt was being paid, one quiet, fearful song at a time, every sunset, or that the debt was paid sooner than that man knew when Savathûn engineered the Witness's failure.

If Savathun was able to create the Altars of Reflection for the purpose of viewing memories linked to artifacts, how do we know she hadn't seen the memory of the familiar and their original destiny to be blessed by the traveler? What if her longest con was to position the 3 hive gods to be resurrected by the traveler and to destroy the witness as vengeance for locking them into the blood tithe?
Maybe as the story progresses we will see the hive gods shed their worms and become allies against the darkness?

Not likely. Savathun built the "machine" the altar of reflection to reproduce the memories like a CD player directly into her mind. She could sense if something held a memory, but she could not activate the memories on her own.
All the memories we have shown her are the ones she remembers, but the worm familiar was "encrypted". Something, wether It was being so old the memory was literally irrecoverable or something else, prevented us from showing It to her the first time.
Only after Ikora reverts its time with the Enclave do we reproduce the memory. Savathun had no idea she had been tricked. And id wager she didnt know she had been tricked when she was Alive either.... That was NOT a memory of Savathun. You know who immediately came to mind as My Name is Byf started reading the Lore in a southern accent, Amanda Holliday... A character who is shown to, despite not being a Guardian, have a fixation on making herself a fixture in the Tower, and among those at the Tower in positions of importance. She was shown to be present at the completion of the Tower being built, or a portion of the wall being built as a child. Which implies she likely has family within the Last City.

Can't remember if it's the Chaperone quest line or the chaperone lore card, but it mentions that Chaperone is a replica of the weapon Amanda's mom carried around to protect refuges on the way to the last city. (Hence the name)

Is this saying the Traveler is the "star that fell"? If not, I wonder what exactly fell when they were directly under the traveler. Maybe something for her to eventually steal it?
Interestingly, the Bible mentions Demons as Angels that diobeyed and describes them as stars that fell from the sky. Of course the devil being the most important of those.

So much to unpack here, I just want to vent about it and see what people think. Starting from the basics, meeting the "Devil" at a crossroads is present in folklore since the ancient greeks, having to do with deals with the devil, and other supernatural activities. The crossroads here is not some coincidence, making me believe even more this could be Savathun or some kind of shade or visage of savathun. The sweet voice and talk about foresight is just the frosting on top. Then there's the chant. This might be a long shot, but I think it's hinting towards Savathun's Song itself. We can't possibly know what the words mean themselves, but if you sing the words to the tune of the song, it fits like a glove. It's also not just a chant, as the hive visage in question says to SING it to the star. Wild lore tab, great video as always byf, keep it up man I love the knowledge bombs you drop

In the story the narrator talked about how the Devil roamed and granted wishes and that he knew that was true because Sean was one of those people. My guess is that the Rigby family is just one of many humans that struck a bargain with Savathûn and were then saved by being under the Traveller singing her song. In that case the debt wouldn't be with just one human family, but every single descendant that only exists because she "saved" their families in the Collapse, maybe the whole human race could be indebted to Savathûn

  • @TormentZero

I think Sean Rigby's family will be the connection to Savathun that allows her to return in a new form. Wouldn't it be interesting if we killed her Hive form, but she split a part of herself into one of the Rigbys and returns as a human? Just a thought.

"The Devil is a lady". We know this devil to be hive, tall, and a lady. Savathun obviously. Anyways, the Rigby family were likely some of the first to create the Last City. And of course the heirs are likely important as Savathun wouldn't make such a deal with some no names. What if, and this is just some serious speculation... But what if we heard the stories of the Rigby family, and we know of a Rigby right now but we don't know her name or at least what her name once was? What if Lakshmi-2 was once a Rigby? The lore says the debt has yet to be collected on, but we don't really know when that lore was written so maybe Savathun came to collect that debt during Season of the Splicer.

Maybe the Rigbys are connected to the cult who made all the counterfeit Thorns. That chant and a hive connection could have led to their ability to creat weapons of sorrow. A family with a direct connection to Ur could explain why a cult could make these weapons while some skilled researchers struggled through the process.
My Thorn Lore is a bit rusty, but the Striga video I watched the other day left some questions this may answer.

Given they would have been some of the first to settle under the Traveler, they might now know secret ways in and out of the Last City. Ways that could be used in retrieving Savathun's body. Or, they weren't the only family given this deal. She made this deal with several families, sending them all to be the first settlers beneath the Traveler in hopes one or more become prominent or powerful members of the Last City.

If the Devil was in fact Savathûn, I suspect two things were in play:
    1. This was a deception enacted to feed her worm, among other possible aims.
    2. The song given to Rigby has the right amount of syllables to fit THE song. It could have been a subtle virus in the City centuries earlier than Lord Shaxx singing about moon cheese.
