    Just gonna hit with some boring game lore for a second.
    Daedra can't create, they can only corrupt. So when a smith binds a daedra to a weapon during the forging process (what the heart's for), the weapon is corrupted by them, and *looks* different; but in reality it still comes down to the smith.
    In fact, in one of in-game books, the weapons are expressly described as appearing completely nonfunctional, when they're picked up the heft and weight is perfect, the grip moulds to the hand, and the blade is razor sharp.
    The way the weapon looks is pretty much just an expression of the daedra within it. The appearance is an illusion that has no real bearing on the functionality of the weapon.

    The Daedra's total lack of practical weapon design always made sense to me. They're going purely for intimidation. Can you imagine a creature in armour so covered in spikes that it's constantly bleeding as it marches towards you? Can you imagine what a body killed by one of those swords would look like?
    It's a sword that no sane human should be willing to touch, much like the thorn handled sword the Skull Knight wields in Berserk. This view is supported by the fact that you never meet a human enemy wielding Daedric weapons. You can buy daedric weapons from a handful of criminal NPCs, and find them in high level boss chests, but apparently even the bandits guarding those chests aren't stupid enough to try and use those weapons, despite their power.

      Along with intimidation, they’re also supposed to be stronger and otherwise superhuman. The weight of these weapons and their impractical-for-humans design wouldn’t pose a problem for them. For instance the saw teeth on the one-handed sword, imagine having the blade slammed down into an opponent then drawn out of them, it would be easy for daedra.
      I could be wrong, I haven’t played the game basically since it came out, so I am a bit rusty on the lore.

    Honestly, the reason I like Daedric weapons so much is because they aren't supposed to be effective or efficient - they're supposed to be painful. Daedra are beings that thrive on chaos and pain, so ending someone's life quickly isn't on their to-do list. The serrations, yes, make the blades worse at cutting, but that's what they want. They want the serrations to RIP through meat, not slice cleanly. These are more akin to torture devices, admittedly. There's also the intimidation factor, to boot.
    tl;dr - They aren't supposed to be practical, they're supposed to be painful and scary.

    • @cxx23
      @cxx23 6 ปีที่แล้ว +144

      I agree with you, except from a gameplay point of view.
      If they were supposed to be "worse at cutting" they wouldn't have higher damage ratings than most every other sword.
      They'd have lower instant damage, and an inherent bleed effect.
      Again, from a lore perspective, I agree with you 100%.

    • @saladyn1000
      @saladyn1000 6 ปีที่แล้ว +151

      Besides, there's a lore explanation. The process of creating daedric stuff involves using hearts of daedra which are containing their souls. So you're locking thinking and feeling daedra into piece of ebony and then: make it really damn hot, beat it with hammer and then harden it, not in water, but in acid. Those spikes and so are not blacksmith's idea, but manifestation of daedra's rage and pain.

    Dædric weapons and armor, to my understanding, is more organic and ceramic than metallic. The blades themselves are more like teeth and claws in composition. The extra bits hanging off is the creature that produced it, or at least, the remnant of that creature.
    The only reason Dædric weapons are more effective is the extra-dimensional residual magic still attached to the blade. I think oblivion got it right, making nearly useless Dædric items on the bulk of encounter Dædra.

      That's one of the reasons i dislike that you can smith deadric weapons and armour in skyrim.
      Makes them feel less special and just like the next thing to replace your current equipment once you have made enough iron daggers.
      It also takes away from dragonbone items, which absolutely should have been the highest smithing tier.
      Deadric items should've been really unique and rare items that you only got through a dangerous encounter, like a legendary dragon or something.

      Going to the Unofficial (i know..) Elder Scrolls Wiki, they say that Ebony is volcanic glass, basically making it (in my mind at least) Obsidian. Considering the ties it has with the Daedra, and the game fact that you need a heart of a Daedra to craft Daedric weapons and armor, it may come with the added bonus that it don't suffer the brittleness of your normal volcanic glass, but still keep the sharp edge that can come with it. Obsidian for instance, make for the best surgical tools, since it can in theory, have an edge that is one molecule thick. If that last part be true, then applying force to two points instead of one, would be somewhat irrelevant, since it could (in theory) shred even metal armor like paper, not to mention what it would do with flesh.
      My thoughts on it at least.

    • @MaaZeus
      @MaaZeus 6 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Yeah I agree. Skall looks at these Daedric weapons from the POV of something that humans forge from metal but that is missing the point. Daedric weapons are not forged, they are more like grown or mutilated from another magical/otherwordly daedric being, they are "alive" so to speak.
      And I agree with the point someone brought, Daedric weapons should not have been forgeable in Skyrim because thats not something a mortal smith can do. It should have stopped at Dragonbone and Daedric weapons should have been ultrarare artifacts you find.

Seeing how clavecus vile (probably spelled wrong) works, and all other dædric princes work actually, they're kinda around to torment you. Why bring that to a quick end?

  • @sevenproxies4255
    @sevenproxies4255 6 ปีที่แล้ว +168

    Regarding the risk of injuring yourself using a daedric weapons. I actually think that's sort of the point. Although not for the user obviously but for the Daedra who tend to have very fiendish motivations and ambitions in everything they do.
    Daderic weapons are intended to be vicious and magical in equal measure. The Daedra probably don't care about whose blood is being spilled by the weapons as long as blood is being spilled.
    Since a daedric heart is required to forge them, some sort of occult ritual is implied to be an ingredient in their manufacture. And that ritual probably perverts the weapons shape into it's potentially harmful appearance to the wielder and it happens probably beyond the control of the blacksmith.

      Yes, I also think their damage comes from a magical (Daedric) source and not so much the metal itself. The mere touch of the blade on armour might be damaging to the person. Daedric artifiacts which can all be seen as "true" Daedric equipment are all enchanted.
      I think the fact that it does not make sense logically is exactly the point but when you see someone walk up with the Devil's garb and his metal whip in hand the thoughts of what the weapon could do to you is enough to cause serious fear in anyone. Also the reason your opponent is wearing this armour is cause for concern - why are they after you? What is going to happen to you if you lose?
      So, I think Daedric weapons cause extreme damage to people due to reasons opposite of the usual rules of combat.

      Like others said, the manner that you make a Daedric item is much, MUCH different than a normal weapon, for you need a daedric heart in order to forge them, in other words, a demon heart. What does that mean? ( This part is more or less copy paste from another comment ) That means that no matter how perfect you make the blade or armor, without any ridges or faulty parts, somewhere along the forging the item will start to get corrupted, making the red lines AKA veins appear alongside the spikes and other unorthodox things that a blacksmith wouldn't do, essentially, the Daedra spirit fused with the item, making it somewhat alive, and each Daedric item is slightly different because they represent the Deadra's personality, this means that both Oblivion's and Skyrim's Daedric weapons and armors are canonic.
      However, it's written in lore that, despite their "imperfections", when held, they work better than if they were made without the heart, perfect balance and cutting/crushing power.

      all the versions made sense IMO, its just different spins on the same thing just Skyrim's turned out a bit odd, but in defense Skyrim in general had issues with proportions in weapons. Funnily enough, in ESO they used that same designs for deadric weapons as they had in Skyrim (along with others) but they were mostly altered to have better proportions as well, kept the design the same just made everything look much better proportionally.

    My head canon with Daedric weapons is that they were never designed or intended to be wielded by mortal races. The Daedra in the Elder Scrolls universe are completely immortal as they are always reborn in Oblivion when they are slain. They are incredibly self destructive and revel in the chaos of their existence. The actual designs of the weapons make sense to me in regards to how their culture is represented in game.

      I see the design as more of a fear tactic. The Daedra are powerful beings. Their strength trumps that of mortals and their access to magic even more so. I feel that enchanting their weapons would eliminate the design flaws and their immense strength would be enough to destroy mortals. And the jagged looking design would simply cause the weak mortals to run in fear. Letting the Daedra laugh as their victim uselessly flees.

    You can try your hand on the godswords of Runescape too. I bet you'll have a field day with the Saradomin godsword in particular...
    Also, the altered versions reminded me a lot of Dragonfable and Adventure Quest which isn't exactly a bad thing. :)

    • @mystic-malevolence
      @mystic-malevolence 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll try my hand at that if you don't mind.
      It's worth noting that the Saradomin godsword is pretty much what the old godsword models looked like.
      But it's not too bad once you remove those weird... fleur de lis spikes from the side. Heck, I could even imagine some culture making such a blade, given what some historical blades look like. The guard is also a bit exaggerated (on all four), but I think that is mostly done because the guards and blades are obtained seperately in-game so they wanted them to be distinct and noticable.
      Bandos godswords are also not terrible imo, except for the horn guard it has. It's basically just a big cleaver, and the serrations are at least pointed in a way where they wouldn't be as likely to get caught. Biggest problem is the balance and the rings on top (definitely would be heavy).
      Zamorak's is basically a torture weapon. It has more prominent spikes and barbs than a daedric sword. I also think the base of the blade is a bit too thick, it widens out a lot compared to the others. Not much more to say. I guess if you're working by the logic that more strength would let one more easily pull the barbs through any snags, creating massive tears and bleeding, that would kind of work?
      Alas, the Armadyl godsword... it looks beautiful, but... probably not the most practical. The shape would make it really weird to use, with an awkward balance and grip. The thickness of the blade is also strange to me, it's as if like the BGS it is made for heavy cleaving blows. The grip seems like it would make this a lot harder, and the pommel is certainly too big to use as a grip for the second hand. (All godswords have this, but I felt only the AGS was specifically impeeded by it). Finally, that really weird hilt/guard that extends halfway up the blade. But I normally give it a pass because it's my personal favorite and clearly designed to look like a wing before anything else.
      Zaros godsword... well, it could be better. there's a weird spike in the blade where the round fantasy part meets the blade part which would be a problem. And obviously the spiky fantasy part would be a problem itself. But it looks like it cheats by being an energy blade.
      Bonus round, the Seren godbow doesn't function as a bow, but I don't think it's really supposed to.

    Alot of your POINTS( pun intended) are spot on in regards to, per se using daedric weapons irl through just standard logic. Obviously if I were to use the one-handed sword to stab and slash, however I noticed repeated design within the sword and dagger, they weren't to necessarily meant to slice and puncture but think in a since to cleve. It was meant to literally run up and cleve an opponent with maxed brute force. Hence the extended handle for extended grip allowing the handle to slide up and down the weilders hand and it may exuse the serrations. And given into account, I'm just presuming at this point, the daedra are indeed strong to some degree where it wouldn't matter, the serrations where intended to rip through cloth, dislink armor, and cause extensive amounts of damage that's only IF the world was as perfect as skyrim and relied on armor only containing either leather, linked, steel, dragonbones, and even glass ( malachite) in other words just the sword would probably devastate that collection.

      Imagine a blow too low on the blade. It would act as a lever, putting too much torque on the attach point of the axe head.
      A lower attach point would bring the leverage point below the head and above the hand and would create much less torque.
      Not to mention he already has the lower point almost touching the shaft. Connecting it at this point is only an upgrade.

    My two cents on your designs would be more focused on the two handed variants, as opposed to the one handed ones. The great/long sword could have a curve, making it look more aggressive, like a kreigsmesser, or a scimitar, but otherwise generally I like the design. The two-handed ax is where I think I would offer more ideas. For one, extend the blade a little bit longer down the length of the handle, to offer a secondary grip position, and extend the horn a little bit more for more penetration. I really like the ideas you presented.please keep up the good work.

    The stop at the top is then useful in stopping the sword from sinking deeper than the first serration, yet the section that is for stabbing is plenty long, in fact it stops you from going too deep, making it faster to get it out.

    So many people always say that the Daedric Weapons & Armor are the best looking ones in Skyrim. I never understood why anyone would think that. I think they are extremely ugly. I never used any of them, I just can't stand their design. I normally either use mods or the Dawnguard-Armor that I just beefed to the same level of protection as daedric by exploiting the potions & enchantements. And for Weapons i just use mods that add historical longswords.

      @goldtoothslair3052 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you when it comes to the daedric armor and swords not being appealing. But the only reason why I use them in my game plays his because they're supposed to just be the most strongest weapon in the whole entire game. So instead of sitting there trying to use practical weapons on killing the legendary dragon that takes more HP out of me than I can of it it's just better to equip Daedric Armor in a daedric bow with a Daedric sword and just go the Town. I'm not a huge fan on mods and also I play on Xbox a lot so mods are not really available and no I'm not one of those people where I'm like mods destroy the experience of the game because really mods can make the game 10 times more exciting than what the developers were trying to make. I just don't like using them because they take too much space on my memory and consoles don't have the greatest of memory so yeah.

So, I added a ton of realistic weapons mods that include: Andragorn weapons (bows/daggers), Isilmeriel's LotR weapons (elven longbow), Unique Bows Collection, Hammerfell Armory and for just the right amount of fantasy; Nico's Gift which is a set of blades based on Mithrodin by Kit Rae. :) I have a few others as well. The 1-handed sword was a fantastic adaption that definitely kept the original style. In my opinion, I feel like it would have been perfectly acceptable to even ditch the spike on the dull edge of the blade but nice to see you keeping it close to original design. The 2-handed sword was certainly the least "Daedric" looking one and I feel like, as you stated, the guard could be tweaked a little to add more flavour. The blade shape too was a little too generic I feel but then again, that also means it would be hilariously more practical. The 1-handed axe was definitely the most interesting for me and one this I noticed was that you could have easily turned the blade up side-down from how you had it and it would function just as effectively but would also buave more potential to hook like a bearded axe. Finally, the 2-handed axe just looks straight up awesome. Not only does it stuck to the theme almost as well as the 1-handed sword but it is also crazy practical and you even accou get for thrusting with the top spike. Overall, great adaptions and would love to see more videos like this.

    • @TheAsvarduilProject
      @TheAsvarduilProject 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I frankly don't care about the game engine. You'd be amazed at what a creative designer/developer can do to make a good game, from a crappy engine. I think the problem that Fallout 4 - and Skyrim, even - had, is that they're games that over-emphasize the combat, despite having ways through [Persuade]/[Intimidate] rolls and other things, of having good non-combat or 'civil' challenges. I've always wanted it to be the case, that I could walk up to a bandit camp, and instead of killing them, fix whatever problem led to them becoming bandits, them rewarding me, and ceasing attacks in the area (only to be replaced by something else, of course. You can't axe combat _entirely.)_

    One important thing to think of is usually the weapons work best when they are used by those who designed them. For all intents and purposes, Daedric weapons are being wielded the vast majority of the time by Daedra themselves. I would surmise they have the strength necessary to not let the serrations get in the way of being able to use it effectively which would make it an even more deadly weapon in their hands than for instance some random Joe-Blow Nord or Breton.

    I dunno. They’re weapons wielded by the actual denizens of hell. It could be that they’re simply so unbelievably sharp and durable that those spikes and serrations DON’T get stuck on bone, mail, clothes, etc. - that they’re as effective against a man in armor as a razor sharp iron weapon would be against a naked man’s thorax?
