Well, another reason for the Vikings not to wear much mail would be that, when going raiding by ship it could mean death, because swimming in armour is not that easy.
Well, I like my hairstyle I have - ( I never go up to people and tell them I have a Viking haircut, I tell them I just like the haircut I chose.) I have my own unique beard style, but I have legit worn a fur mantle that covers around my neck and had a hooded one, and I found the added weight in the winter and layer of warmth actually helped me out when trekking through the trails so again, I'm not a Viking but I do have Scandinavian roots and enjoy the culture very much. So in the end, we like what we like and it's best to not state that we're thisnor that, we just like different things and ideas. 🧔♂️

I just imagined an archaeologists entering a kitchen for the first time and say: "ah yes, this place is for rituals".
To be fair, if they had just found the building and the people paying them just showed up to ask what they'd found, they'd rather say "Well this depression here was probably a fire pit, so this was probably a place for ritual sacrifice!" so that the bankrollers ooh and ahh, then once they're gone they'd figure out what it actually was, and say "So new evidence has turned out that this was in fact a kitchen."
My favourite archaeology lecturer at college had a poster on his office door entitled 'mysteries of archaeology' the top was a picture of a single shard or pottery, underneath was the 'archaeologist's reconstruction' and he'd drawn camelot.

The funny thing is, although in The Witcher there are no "Vikings" per se, but Skellige pirates are one of the best fantasy Vikings out there.
Skelligers are a cross between Scandinavian and Irish culture, so it makes sense. But viking is a profession more than a culture, which is where the caricature supercedes the actual people

Early Medieval Scandinavians would volunteer to Go Viking to make their riches, so could be a Farmer, or Woodcutter... then Go Viking maybe for 1 Raid\Voyage... then go back to Farming again... then maybe do another couple of Raids\Voyages... then go back to their Farm... etc... so it's not even a "Social Class" thing either...

@@John_winston For Thors sake! Of course they didn't. Very clearly, the war baguette was a thrown weapon, not unlike a javelin, and not made for melee combat. Loosely related to but clearly distinct from the war baguette, there also was the battle croissant - also known as "baked pommel" - which was used to end rightly anyone coming into melee range.
Axes on the other hand were really just tools used to gather the fuel for forging new war baguettes and battle croissants in the countless ovens of their war machinery.

I know many people say that it’s not important that many games or movies are so historically inaccurate but I hate it because they shape the minds of countless people who then think these depictions are a decent representation even though it is horribly wrong.

Their fames and fortunes where not only from martial provess but for giving the audience a good show of courage and braveness, and more often than not a defeated gladiator would be spared. People volunteered to become gladiators, as it was a good way to earn money to get out of debt, and a good gladiator could become a celebrity

@@maazmasood6601 You're right about that. For instance King Horik's court/hall robes were extremely detailed vs the leather armor his character would wear into battle. Pretty much goes for all the characters. King Harald's and Ubbe's combative clothing look pretty good and detailed even though there still a little too much leather.

Yeah, Viking Conquest has, I’m gonna say it, the most accurate depictions of Vikings in any video game, period. Hell, I can’t think of any piece of media in general that does it better. Not even the movie The Northman does it as well.

Ive been spreading this gospel for years. "Viking just means pirate, most people living in "viking countries" were farmers or craftsmen or other less exciting jobs, calling every Scandinavian a viking is like calling everyone in Japan a ninja."
Vikings traded as much as they raided (trade expeditions would have to travel with many warriors anyway to protect them from pirates, so which one it turned out to be often depended on what opportunities presented themselves) but otherwise yes. I think other people would have referred to the people as Northmen.

The word viking was actually used contemporary. But it's origins are uncertain. Some believe that's what they called the people from Viken (area around Oslo-fjord) others believe it was used on the raiders in general since they landed their ships in bays (vikr). Perhaps both istrue.

I believe i've heard several historians say that the word Viking was invented after what we call the viking age, so the vikings probably did'nt refer to themselves as vikings or 'going viking' when going on raids, trading cruises etc. - Great video as usual :)

That was part of the point in the raids in the first place. Not just adventuring, and pillaging, but finding new and better places to live. They werent as successful as I'm sure theyd hoped, but if they were glad to get out of Scandinavia for whatever reason, that's a success.

And that's why they went to iceland Groenland and america. Some (not all as you said) of the vikings were settlers and just wanted to do quiet farming in a quiet place.
Some people think that the raids started because some of the people were starving, so it was raid or death. Vikings at first were just ... farmers. And that is why their simple (not for war) clothes are so accurate. They were pirates and thiefs, basicaly. Their fist raid was against non violent people ... lol that was safe. Hit hard (mostly on pacific and almost empty coast villages), loot all (mostly the church), rape a bit, and then run. How romantic is that ?
The romantic postmodern vision of vikings is so laughable. They wanted easy loot that's all. Like any man would want. Thiefs still exist in today's world. Thank you for this, I am a historian who had gotten into arguments about this topic by people who watch the show "Vikings" and believe they know more by watching a show then those that have done proper research.
I love the show, but I'll never get the modernized look they gave to some of the characters. it does not seem at all the kind of haircut I'd use in a pretty much frozen country all year round.

I had a history teacher that gave an explanation to the whole "fur armor" myth that i was happy with; if you were out raiding you didn't really want to stop, so making a fur mantle to protect from the elements wouldnt be too far fetched if yours was damaged beyond use

This summer an anime with viking thematic called VINLAND SAGA will be released. Could you do an analysis about how accurate it really is?
I know the comic and its damn good. Story wise and from the look (historical accurate depiction of things). There are some OP stuff in it regarding certain combat abilities of some characters but thats about it.

I encourage you to watch a bit of the Vikings television show. Not because I think you'll enjoy it, but because I want you to mercilessly rake it over the coals.
I liked Bernard Cornwell's 'Last Kingdom' series for a reasonably accurate depiction of Anglos and Danish warriors. Show is ok as well.
I always hate how they depict Alfred and the Anglo-Saxons in media, they are always pathetic and useless scrubs while the Vikings are the superior machos. Quite frustrating that it happens everywhere.
And Vikings is quite enjoyable for the first 3 seasons, though sometimes you do roll your eyes at stupid stuff. After that it just became really bad, they had potential with the timeskip to improve costumes and settings but they completely failed.

Also a common misconception of them were that they were dirty, unhygienic etc which is farther from the truth than you might think, seeing as there were findings of combs and other such things and also that they did in fact bathe more than the average european (in hot springs especially but also at winter, in the snow) which has to do with the most part of eu being christian and there was something in there about not bathing too much but cant quite remember what exactly
And a cool thing was that a Persian(I believe) missionary went to Scandinavia to record what life and the people here were like and he of course trashed everything and spread shite about the people here and that is also where a lot of misconceptions come from believe it or not!

The Swedish Empire claimed to be the old Atlantis. Basically the same historical value as Rome being Troy.
Except there actually was a Troy for sure, but Atlantis is just proof of how good a writer Plato was. The Aeneid is still fan fiction, but more historically based.
Vikings is a great show, you're right it's not historically accurate in presentation. I will say the events are pretty spot on. But it's 100% a fantasised version of real history.

The creator always makes it clear that he uses history as a blueprint, but that he’s a dramatist first, and many times what he does deters from history. I’m a big history buff, but when the creator of a series makes it clear from the get go he doesn’t necessarily try to be historically accurate, it’s like massive bodybuilders who do steroids and admit to it. They’re not fooling anyone, they’re not trying to sell it as something it’s not. It’s a great series, so, mission accomplished.

History is a slow process and sometimes historical accuracy makes for disappointing TV. It's one thing to go through it as an overview (as in reading, or watching a documentary), in which you can cover decades within a few sentences, it's another going through it step by step.

I think an important reason for the lack of Viking helmets and armour finds is also because they would generally pick targets that were vulnerable. Not to suggest that they were indestructible and they had no casualties, but I imagine they tended to be on the winning side against their chosen targets and would have the opportunity to recover equipment from any fallen fellow vikings.
Theory about re-using iron could be true, for example first Japanese to visit US in 1800s commented that there is a lot of iron vaste and that something like that is unimaginable in a feudal society like Japan
