UPDATE: Full sequel video where I answer your questions: th-cam.com/video/-8YAT4KDSNs/w-d-xo.html
To answer a common question, yep, this scabbard can work with a backpack to account for the many adventurers wearing them, simply attach the scabbard to the same side of the backpack as your main hand with the scabbard's affixed belt and draw it from over your shoulder as normal. Skallagrim shows where you would want to attache the sword to a backpack in this video but he needs to drop the pack to draw it. If you used my scabbard design you could draw the sword without needing to take off the backpack. th-cam.com/video/mNZL2yw0yAo/w-d-xo.html&t

Yeah, but he had a point. It's not exactly ideal to fight while wearing a backpack. Still, you can at least draw the sword with this scabbard if necessary, say if someone is acting suspicious, then drop the bag if you are planning on fighting. Now for the next question: How would you carry a flat roundshield on your back?

That's an awesome idea with this custom design, congrats!
However, since you made it practical (with practice) to draw the sword with one hand, I wonder if you can also test another unusual thing from movies and games: Two short swords on the back! (and maybe draw them at the same time with each hand)

What a fantastic examination of this idea. I love the amount of thought put into this, and I also love the engineering to make a practical back scabbard. One thing I would argue here is that drawing the sword in a timely manner is very important, but putting it back easily is much less important. What is the result of not getting your sword out in time? Well, the other guy probably chops you up or sticks you full of holes. But what happens if you cant put it away easily? Well, you maybe look kinda silly trying to get it back in there, or maybe you even need to ask someone for help. If you wear full armor, though, you probably already have a squire, or some other assistance, to don and doff your armor. Putting on full plate by yourself is much less practical than sheathing a sword, no matter where you keep the sheath/scabbard. Failing to draw in time is lethal, but failing to put it away in time is generally not.

  • @snowdaybornagainbrony6832

Another advantage to this design that you forgot to mention. The ART. An ornate scabbard only has so much room for pretty details, or you need to be REALLY close to see it. If a scabbard was a CD cover, this thing is a 12-inch vinyl sleeve. You've got enough room to paint a full Coat of Arms that could be recognizable from across the room. It's not as much canvas space as a shield, but as far as swords are concerned, this is king.

When it comes to sheathing your sword, speed shouldn't be a concern. In fact, you're supposed to sheathe slowly. At least in kendo. The idea is an enemy may spring out as you're sheathing, so if you stay alert while slowly sheathing, you can respond quickly in case an enemy tries to surprise you.

I'm a mangaka (manga author and artist), and my main character has a claymore-sized longsword he wears on his back. I've been designing various sheaths/scabbards to make it easier to draw the weapon, and thought about the half-sheath Geralt wears in the Netflix series of The Witcher. I like how the sheath is attached to the belt, and has a leather "box" that braces and gives the right kind of space between the sheat and the lower back/waist. However, it's somewhat of an impractical design for a meatier, longer sword. I'm impressed with the design you've created, and it definitely makes it easier to draw and resheath. I may actually base my design loosely on your concept, especially the open side draw aspect. VERY nice.

I often think about how realistic things like this actually were and I'm grateful to people like you for putting videos together explaining the practicality. It's super interesting to see. I think definitely for the fantasy character this is the most practical. However, realistically I think people who would be carrying a sword around either on their hip or back would be foot soldiers and probably would only be doing it for one battle at a time rather than carrying them around adventuring. So it probably wouldn't matter all that much how they wore it. Also, if you've seen the Witcher series and how they handle it, you might be kind of weirded out like I was at first but I think that's actually the most practical way to carry them around. Simply having a case that you can stow on your horse and bring out when needed.

This is what I was thinking the first time someone brought up back swords as a question to me. Probably 3 or 4 years ago, actually, might even have been Shad that first brought it up to my ears. Shad's design is solid and functional, he addressed all the same concerns I did *and* thought up an oiled sheath, so I give him full credit, but he's a sword guy and he also figured out a sword guy problem. I wasn't interested enough to build a mock-up, he makes his living doing this. I'm more motivated to do armor design, I just suck at that

Ah, but if you're an adventurer, by the time that happens, you're probably nearing the end of your current adventure and don't have many enemies left to end rightly, and that space you've opened up from all that earlier ending rightly is mighty useful for all those magic potions, artifacts and treasures you find laying around conveniently for you to plunder, once all enemies are ended rightly. Any remaining stragglers you can just end normally and be done with it so you can get back to town and squander that hard earned treasure on wenches, dice and ale.

sheathing it quickly would only be important in situations of politics. like if you're the kings guard. when he gives the order for you to sheath or "rest" your arms (sword) you are unironically expected to be able to sheath your blade almost as fast as you drew it initially. Or when you have to quickly mount your steed because something's gone wrong and a retreat has been sounded. outside of those you don't need to sheath it quickly at all.

Sprinting to punish the soon to be dead AF parents of some bullies, medieval style, with fantasy elements so the blade causes you to set on fire or get electrocuted then you fly through a window into the windscreen of a moving car, and watch out for the driver of this car because somekind of energy comes out his fingers that allows him to slice people up just by waving his hands around infront of a guy. Don't worry though, he was impressed by the power of the sword, so now he's joined the party and its on to the next area where the soon to be dead AF first boss lives, feasting on the blood of the forsaken ones.

So they could be using phones but the way the other comment worded its post i assumed it was ether the medieval times (the middle times) or some other time period like that one maybe Elizabethan times perhaps.they were also used in ww1 and i think ww2 for a brief time.
