  • Ladies and gentlemen, the meme is officially dead.
In the longest Remake or Rebreak episode to date, I offer a thoroughly comprehensive review of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS, with an emphasis on version comparison. This video didn't quite break the 60 minute mark, but I think you should probably get something to eat anyway.

    Remake or Rebreak Scores:
1- Rebreak: Fails to resurrect the same quality standard as the original due to incompetent design, technical failures, etc. A virtually worthless remake/port overall.
2- Re-Meh: Not as good as the original, but a relatively competent recreation that is still very playable. Additionally, a Re-Meh may not address the original's salient issues or fail to add anything meaningful.
3- Remake: As good or even slightly better than the original, but not necessarily worth playing if you already own that version. Typically adds some new content or fixes salient issues with the original.
4- Replace: A remake/port that changes, fixes, and adds so much that it renders the original virtually obsolete. A Replace not only faithfully recreates the original, but fixes most (if not all) of the original's issues and adds a sizable amount of new content.

Something worth mentioning when you compared graphics:
Mario's DS model actually has less polygons than on the N64, yet still looks better, so that helps your argument that the DS version looks better.

And yet, he did make them look responsive, like longplayers of the game like cubex55 (and World of Longplays). Maybe he’s just too good at the game? Because I don’t think the gameplay of Super Mario 64 (N64) aged half as well as the soundtrack or even the old-school 3D graphics of this version. m.th-cam.com/video/jcWUuFz595o/w-d-xo.html

It is almost like fixing that thing AND giving you a character like Yoshi forced by default makes it too easy.
To even feel the fix as Mario you actively have to go out of your way to get Mario and choose to play as him.
After playing as Yoshi for awhile.
There is a healthy balance, when you do 50 things at once it will almost always be overkill.

@@bN_isheeere The D-Pad is definitely an issue, but I think it's worth pointing out how other people can point at outdated aspects of the original N64 game and still say the game's good in spite of them, despite a notable portion of the younger generation disagreeing.
It's one of those limitations that, if you grew up with it, is unlikely to come across as bad to you.
I definitely have memories of trying to juggle the various control options in SM64DS, because none of them felt quite right, but eventually I got there, and I was able to consider it the better game despite having been there when the original game released (and renting the hell out of an N64 to play it). Everytime I go back to this review, I never care how old this video is. I just ache hearing how hard the comments made you feel about your intro segments.
But then you turn it around, pick the momentum back up and pull off a fantastic analysis of SM64's two versions. DS for the win, heck they brought back Yoshi when he was planned as a crucial lead player focus in the first place! Based on that alone as a call back, I could tell it was a remake treated well.
But again I'd hate to see the effort you go to tarnished by people who try to tear you down. In more recent reviews I've seen you take the camera away but keep the flair-filled intros, and I'm glad you stuck to your guns and kept to what comes naturally. So just coming back here for the virtual hug I suppose.

Plot Twist: Luigi is just an alter ego of Mario, and doesn't actually exist. Thats why at the end of Super Mario World the end cutscene reads, "Mario's adventure is over. Mario, the Princess, Yoshi, and his friends are going to take a vacation." This also explains the "L is real" thing in 64. Thats Mario trying to cope with living a double life.

I disagree. I've tried using the 3DS circle pad. Moving it around when wanting to turn either doesn't do anything other than walk forward or activates the diagonal input and I can't tell when that transition is made because it's a circle pad. I'd honestly just much rather use the D-pad.

"A glaring case of Star Fox Zeroitis"
Thank you! People will swear up and down that Star Fox Zero has horrible controls that make the game unplayable. Absolutely not true! If you actually take the time to learn how to use the new control scheme, and pay attention to the tutorials that the game kindly gives you (including the challenges that allow you to further familiarize with the controls), you'll be getting every medal and beating the game to completion in no time! Are the controls perfect? Definitely not, I can see why some people would have issues, but they aren't as bad as people like to claim that they are.
I got the hang of the controls during the tutorial that the game immediately throws the player into. Not only did I pay attention, but I also went in with an open mind (and I was well aware of the different controls before the game came out thanks to Treehouse Live, as well as other videos that covered the game before launch). I got all 70 medals in the game, even though I'm _far_ from the best player, and I enjoyed every second of it. Sector Omega is still a thrill ride, definitely my favorite level!
Star Fox Zero is my favorite Star Fox game of all time, and that's not going to change any time soon.

Knowing about Super Mario odyssey I believe that collectathons may be coming back seeing as yes, odyssey has a story that requires point A to B and off to the net kingdom. But when you return to the kingdoms. You get tons of moons and purple coins to grab. And Nintendo knows they are going back to SM64’s gameplay style. Seeing as they implemented loads of Easter eggs in odyssey and even requirements to find these references. So I am happy that we are going back to its roots in SM64

Full disclaimer: I've never played Super Mario 64 on the original N64 Hardware, so I have no nostalgia bias. (Sue me.) That means the DS version is the only one I've actually experienced (and even completed).
That being said: The controls were shyte. They were horrendously imprecise, especially for slow movement on thin walkways. The D-pad was clunky as hell and while the touch controls felt more smooth, they also had a will of their own, ignoring input ever so often or occasionally going into directions I didn't tell them to. I played other 3D action games and platformers on the same system and while I always noticed the limitations of the hardware, it never felt this bad. While Nintendo probably did the best they could given the circumstances, this is a game that probably should never have released on a system without a circle pad. Playing the 3D remasters of Ocarina of Time and Majoras Mask makes me wonder how much better this game could have been, had they waited one more generation.
Another thing I noticed is your response to the claim that the original had bad controls. Now, again, I've never played the original, so I don't know if it does or doesn't, but your response basically boils down to "It could be worse" while showing inferior(?) Mario romhacks. "It could be worse" is never an argument. I could show you dozens of games with bad controls that could easily be made even worse, but that doesn't absolve them from their faults. Once again, I don't claim that Mario 64 HAS bad controls, because I don't know. I just feel that the argumentation is flawed...
All I all, I still enjoyed your video. Having no experience with the original, I don't know if I'd agree with the verdict or not, but it was an interesting insight nonetheless. Keep up the good work.

I mostly agree on the DS controls, they did whatever they could, but for me it still doesn't feel as good, mostly because of the run and dive buttons. In 3D Land it's no issue to hold the run button all the time because there isn't a third main button that you have to use, but in SM64 DS it's very awkward to switch from the run button to the dive button (Y to A). For this reason I punch and dive way less here than on the N64 which is a shame because in the original it's one of the most satisfying moves to do.

Cheeseboi so let me make sure I have this right. I have someone who is stalking/harassing me about changing my name on MY account and the solution is for me to delete the comment? How about you get better as a person instead so that this kind of thing doesn't happen again.

I really don't mind the scripted speech (I actually like it). But unscripted stuff just feels more real

I never imagined you'd put this much research into covering a comparison like this. Great review.
If by chance you plan on doing more Remake or Rebreak reviews how about reviewing Resident Evil 1 for PS1 and the gamecube/HD remake. It deserves to be reviewed it's an amazing remake.
