Hey, look, Exo reviewed that remake that just came out, and it only took him two months since the last video! Lots of people have been requesting this one on EPG Plays and on Twitter, and I was going to redo my first review eventually, so here we are.
Luigi's Mansion originally released on the GameCube in 2001, and is something of a cult classic for the system, but gaming publications also criticized it upon release for its short length. How well does Luigi's Mansion pack its 2-6 hour running time with polished content you want to replay over and over? What does the 3DS improve or add to justify its $40 asking price? Given that the Nintendo Switch is an option for portable remakes, how much would the remake have benefited from releasing on that platform instead? I discuss these questions and plenty more in this hour long Remake or Rebreak extravaganza.

    Remake or Rebreak Scores:
1- Rebreak: Fails to resurrect the same quality standard as the original due to incompetent design, technical failures, etc. A virtually worthless remake/port overall.
2- Re-Meh: Not as good as the original, but a relatively competent recreation that is still playable enough. Alternatively, a Re-Meh may fail to address the original's salient issues or neglect to add anything substantial.
3- Remake: An improvement overall, but not necessarily worth playing if you already own the original. Typically adds some new content or fixes salient issues with the original. Remakes with this score often don't reach their fullest potential or otherwise lack something meaningful you can only get in the original.
4- Remaster: A rerelease that changes, fixes, and adds so much that it stands heads and shoulders above the original version. A Remaster not only faithfully recreates the original, but fixes most (if not all) of the original's issues and adds a sizable amount of worthwhile new content as applicable.

I have a feeling the reason why Luigi’s Mansion is such a basic game is that it was meant to be more of a tech demo, kind of like how Wii Sports was executed. That being said, if Luigi’s Mansion is an overglorified tech demo, then it is the best tech demo I’ve ever played.

If it is indeed a glorified tech demo, then the fact that they made a sequel showed that there is a market for games like this. Super Smash Bros. was originally a tech demo, I'm sure it would have been a one-&-done deal. But the very idea of Nintendo mascots duking it out with each other clicked with people and (as Brawl proved) it didn't need to be JUST Nintendo mascots. Point being: Luigi's Mansion is one of my favorite Mario games out there and a Survival Horror game to boot. (Well, as close to a Survival Horror game the Super Mario Bros. can get.)

2 year late correction: Luigi's Mansion was developed with Stereoscopic 3D. So, it's technically already capable of it (and it's the only GameCube Game that is capable of it). HOWEVER, at the time, the special add-on that implemented 3D cost more than a GameCube, so it was never used. So, it is capable of 3D already, but cannot ever be used because the add-on was never released and couldn't be released at the time.

Why did he spend so much time to compare Luigi’s Mansion to a metroidvania when it is not a metroidvania? The game doesn’t need huge exploration or alternate routes to be replayable because it’s flat out fun, plus it has the ranks for collecting treasures. To get the best rank requires exploring the entire mansion to find speedy spirits, golden mice, and the 50 boos to get one of only two giant diamonds.

My only gripe with this review is a lot of these problems in frame drops can be mostly avoided or mitigated with the newer model, to put it in comparison the New 3DS fixes a lot of the problems the original had that being it practically doesn't chug in frames and when it did, it did so not nearly as hard.
This made games for me like MGS3D MUCH more playable the frame rate in MGS3D Chugged practically all the time...this made it so now the game at least usually always runs at the solid 20fps the games set at. (And that may seem low but I never was the kinda guy to whine about frame rate, and the fact I got MGS3 on a portable device that is actually serviceable is a kojima magic trick in it of itself.) The point was whilst the games frame rate was low the newer model made sure it at least didn't dip below that. And this was true with other games I played. The frame rate was more stable and chugged considerably less and the only time it would, would be minor hiccups from when there was ALOT on screen. Another thing it fixed is games load times and download times.
Smash Bros on 3DS practically shows this off the game requires literally like 25 seconds just to boot the game that drops down to a mere 5 seconds on the newer model. and download times for both Eshop and download play are considerably faster to on the newer model. And that small nub and zl and zr buttons on the New 3DS actually can act as a control pad pro accessory ill be it to me its not as great as the control pad pro accessory but its there.
This point is a bit polarizing depending on how you look at it but the new 3DS offered super stable 3D this made 3D feel less stiff when using it as you didn't have to look at a specific angle to use it. This made the 3D feature to those that want to use it at least more comfortable.
So overall if your complaining about the frame rate chugging I really suggest the New Nintendo 3DS its a bit on the pricey side but for what it improves over the original it more then makes up for its steep asking price. That being said the original is quite serviceable in most situations and is often a cheeper option for those gaming portably on a dime. Just be forewarned that this is the kind of chugging you can sometimes get as shown in the video from some newer system titles.

Idk if I can personally agree entirely about the whole “Plenty of ideas but master of none” ideology here.
I have a feeling that Luigi’s Mansion wasn’t made to be a like a Metroid game... Like at all. Sure, the idea you proposed would maybe make a fun fan hack, (Luigi’s Mansion Randomizer, maybe?) but I believe what they were going for was the right idea. Guide the player through the Mansion with cookie crumbs and reward the player with little bonuses if the player chooses to explore a bit further off the path.
You also brought up the Rank System, and bragged about how you scored an A Rank. That’s nice, but it’s not just a Ranking System. It’s also a High Score System, and definitely encourages to always go for the high score for those sweet bragging rights. Sure, anyone can get an A Rank, but what about prioritizing tactics to beat your own high score? Yes, the game gives you a Lot of Health, but if you try to get the high score, any hit will make you loose coins, and the consequence for failure is raised, and gives you the option to save your dropped cash at the risk of being hit and losing more.
You also mentioned that the game becomes more and more tedious the more you play, giving fighting the boos as an example, and that’s when I kind of rolled my eyes. Luigi’s Mansion’s combat is very simple, but has a lot of hidden tech. Over subsequent playthroughs, players might discover that mashing the control stick in the opposite direction can actually be utilized with the regular tug mechanics to completely obliterate the ghost’s hp, and might even fully knock out the toughest portrait ghosts, even on the normal Mansion. Players might also pick up on Boo Pumping, and Boo Blocking, Which are incredibly useful tech to master as they pretty much solve the Boo chasing problem. This tech basically freezes the Boo in place for you to do major damage, and, though Boos with 300 hp will probably break free from the exploit, the Boo Room Blocking tech can be used to make it stay in the same room. It makes the tedious act of normally catching boos make you feel awesome when you manage to catch a 300hp Boo without ever having it flee the room. There’s more techniques too, but I’m already off topic.
I also disagree with the complaint of the 3DS hidden Mansion being too hard on health. I actually love how grueling hard it is, and I believe the lack of Hearts really makes it stand out. In fact, I would have probably liked it a lot less if there were just Hearts I could go back and rely on. It makes every instinctive decision seem a lot more impactful knowing I’ll only be able to heal every few rooms by using skill to take out many ghosts at once.
I like to think of the 3DS Hidden Mansion as an exclusive Club, for those who have the game on a complete lockdown, for the masters. This isn’t a mode that scrubs can just walk into. This is where you go for the Ultimate Luigi’s Mansion Challenge.
That being said, uh, no offense, but you didn’t look quite ready for that quite yet. Again, There’s a lot of enemy manipulation and planning that goes into the matchups in the hidden Mansion, and, well, if you just had problems catching more than one ghost at once, then maybe that’s the problem.
I have no problem with the controls on the GC version, and kind of face palmed when you said that the best strategy is to turn off the flashlight and flash em quick... YES. That IS how you are supposed to do it. If you shine the ghosts too far away, they won’t be stunned as long, and is how multiple can get away even before you tried to suck them. It’s a mechanic of the game that adds risk versus reward, and makes goons like Gold Ghosts and Purple Punchers require very different strategies to get the hearts. It requires baiting them and taking full advantage of being as close to them as possible to get the multi Suck that basically is the only thing that heals you in the 3DS hidden Mansion. It’s a very important mechanic.
    ...
Oh man, I’ve been writing a while... I’m so sorry I’m so off topic. I guess what I was going to say is that sometimes, you don’t need to be the master of a trait to be a good game. Luigi’s Mansion is about the Breadcrumb experience that lets players poke around the bushes for some extra rewards. It’s not supposed to be a revolutionary game. It’s just fun to be roaming around in this giant house, fighting some goonies, getting showered with money, beating the game in a night trying to beat your high score every year around halloween. Yeah, some parts of the game is simple, and I think that’s exactly what they were going for. Sure, it CAN be expanded upon, but what’s here is what I think that all the game needs to just be a fun time.

    • @PumpkinSwag
      @PumpkinSwag 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

SNAPLocket I agree. Personally I wouldn’t mind if they made hearts appear less often than in the Normal mansion, but they didn’t need to take them out completely.

    • @noahtoad4095
      @noahtoad4095 5 ปีที่แล้ว +28

I guess we are split here. I would not agree that removing health is presents a fake challenge.
Hearts are still rewarded with skill of sucking up multiple ghosts at once, and with the abundance of ghost swarms in the hidden Mansion, for me at least, still made hearts quite common in my playthrough.
I personally think that going back to specific rooms to get big hearts was super cheap. It made it seem that you could baby waddle your way through the Mansion farming for health. I don’t think the New Hidden Mansion is about that.
I guess it all goes back to the thing I said about the Hidden Mansion being like an exclusive club. Yeah, there are no health pick ups, but to be in the club, you need to be a master who takes no damage anyways, since all the ghosts do double the damage. You’ve pretty much got to be flawless to be in this theoretically exclusive club.
There are plenty of other great games that offer little to no healing item items, and some that are loaded with instant death traps. Luigi’s Mansion’s Hidden Mansion is Still generous enough to reward players who take risks to recover from huge mistakes.
I don’t know about anyone else. I’m kind of the guy who says gimme the hardest test you’ve got, and I’ll study the situation to go for the gold. I’m into Uber-hard hardcore adventures that simple mistakes can spell doom when you least expect it. It’s kind of like life. The new Hidden Mansion does just that. I may be one in a crowd but I love how tough it is.

“Luigi has nothing interesting to say”
Compared to who? Mario? Aside from pasta, he rarely shows his thoughts on anything. I honestly find Luigi’s character more entertaining, and he actually HAS character! He has refined tastes (its a painting, but I wouldn’t call it art), he’s not a fan of the Nursery’s look(now that’s just not my style/this looks like it’d break if I sit on it), and he even calls out E. Gadd for his failures! (Way to go genius. Have you got a hold of that thing yet?)
We can even learn that he had a rocking horse in his childhood by scanning one. In what other situation would we learn these facets of Luigi’s personality?

@@Raddish-IS-RaddI hate to say it, but Mario could really use a little more character development in a future game. I mean, really, what do we know about him?
      He's kind and heroic.
      He's a plumber.
      He loves Princess Peach.
      He loves mushrooms and pasta.
He'll gladly drop everything he's doing to kick Bowser's tail at the drop of a dime.
      He cares for his brother.
...And that's about it. Him and Luigi have all but 1 of those those things in common ( I think he prefers Daisy over Peach, since like him, she's more athletic compared to her more popular counterpart ). And yes, even at his most cowardly, Luigi will charge into the fray if needed to help Mario out. See the final Bowser battle in the Super Mario Bros. movie for that one.
Compared to Luigi, Mario's had barely ANY character development in the 30+ years we've known him. We don't know his opinions on fine art, music, decoration, toys and other playthings, fashion, etc., some of which you'd think we'd know by now given how often he hangs out with Peach, whose probably a huge fan of a lot of those things.
He needs more moments like what Luigi gets in this game, moments that tell us more about who that man in the red cap is. Mario is as bland as a stale cracker compared to Luigi in that department, all because of this one game.

In the original Luigi's Mansion (and presumably also the 3DS remake), ghosts had more flashlight stun the closer you were to them when the beam hit them. If you walked toward them with the light on, it would hit them at the farthest possible point from Luigi and they'd escape instantly. Holding it off and getting close and then turning it on guaranteed a catch. You could also point it away from them and let them approach you and then turn around and shine it on them when they were close.

As for the finale, yeah with the lore behind boos in the series, it makes more sense for King Boo to do something cowardly and use Bowser’s body than to fight you head on like in later games. It’s a creative use of the Koopa king, foreshadowed in the story, one of the much better Bowser twists in the series.

lack of particle effects? imsorrywhatthefuck? the original had a LOT of particle effects that would severely slow down the 3ds (like the dust, little glitters the gold makes, and ghost particles.) I don't know that Grezzo entirely had a choice when it came to using the Dark Moon controls, but I can't confirm that, but assuming he didn't that's not a huge deal for me, I guess. I disagree that Luigi's thoughts are uninteresting. I feel his thoughts on specific items (unless it uses repeated text) is a very interesting study into his character. I think the game is SUPPOSED to be a calm atmospheric haunted mansion experience, and I love the atmosphere and how calming the mansion itself is so much that I play the game again every October when I'm not watching scary movies. Portrait ghosts each have unique personalities, which I feel adds to the atmosphere I feel is the main focus. They seem like stock characters, but if memory serves (and it might not, I tend to forget most things almost immediately) you can find diaries and uncover dialogue by scanning the heart of the bosses. The ones who lived together did live together wherever they come from, but were captured by E. Gadd, and placed in portraits. Creating this mansion and releasing the ghosts from the paintings, the ghosts now have a pretty nice place to live seeing as wherever they come from is likely either destroyed or far away. Totally agree on the Boos though, but I do like their silly names. I also agree on the spoilery thing at the end of the game. I knew about the bronze to gold portraits to begin with, discovering it slowly on my own when I noticed some of the images in the gallery weren't the same as when I played before. I feel like it SHOULD have been rereleased on Switch, and I would have gotten the remake in that case, but I'm going to pass on this one. Sorry about the paragraph, I love this game is all. Mostly for the mansion itself, I think.

By now, you've more than likely heard it a few times, but just to make sure you know, in order to have better chances catching ghosts, you need to be close to the ghost. The further you are from the ghost, the shorter the stun lasts before the ghost disappears. I don't remember if it was E. Gadd who mentions it or if it's somewhere in the rule book, but I'm pretty sure that it is mentioned somewhere.

The reason the ghosts disappear is because of when and where you shine the flashlight. If a ghost gets stunned by the widest part of the flashlight it will disappear, if a ghost gets stunned by the smallest part of the flashlight (the tip of the flashlight) then the ghost will be stunned for way longer. I would recommend holding B and go up to a ghost then shine it. Hope this helps

  • @P8NPrivTV

I think this episode is a little unfair to how much you wanted the remake to be on the Switch. That argument alone can take away points from the 3DS version as well.
The reason it was madr for 3DS was because the game was planned to be in Stereoscopic 3D, but was cut. Now that we have the 3D, along with the Dark Moon engine, that can happen.

Luigi’s Mansion is a *good* *launch title* in the same sense that Nintendo Land is a good launch title.
It definitely shows promise, and it does it’s job to exemplify the console’s ability to process data and content, but that’s about it!
All Luigi’s Mansion does is show the GameCube’s ability to process controller input and how it displays models, especially higher quality ones. And it pushes the stereo/mono sound since a lot of the OST uses mono-ear design.

Not sure if someone has answered it already, but the duration of the flashlight stun in the original is dependent on the distance from the ghost when the flashlight shines on it, the closer it is, the longer the stun, and more time you have to start vacuuming, if it's further, it's the opposite.

I was around 10 to 11 and my sister 3 years younger when we first got Luigi’s Mansion. It was I believe our first Gamecube game. That game was one of the hardest games to date for us. We got lost and couldn't figure out what to do, got jumped scared and refused to play for a while and only got a D rank house the first time we beat it. It depends also when you played it. We also had school, chores, bedtimes and the fact that we couldn't play it every night. If I played it blind today? I probably could beat it in a few hours with no more than a small jump or two before I got used to it. I just had to get that out and loved your review. Not sure about all the technical mechanics you were talking about, but we never really had a problem aiming or sucking ghosts.

The reason they disappear sooner is because the further away they are when you stun them, the less time you have to start vacuuming. Also, in the clip with the grabbers, Luigi gets scared which automatically makes him turn off the flashlight. That can make a ghost dissappear since you aren't shining it on them as well.

40:28 - 41:11 That is the one thing that makes me think that King Boo was just a weak villain in the original Luigi's Mansion Game. In Dark Moon, however, he actually fights Luigi with his own powers himself, and doesn't use a costume of Bowser. Heck, the only characters in the game even remotely mentioned are Luigi, Professor Egad, Mario, Toad, and when King Boo Mentions all of Luigi's friends which we can assume be the Toads, Peach, Daisy, etc...
Heck, I almost feel that this King Boo could actually have even taken over Bowser's own Kingdom just with the Power he had in that game. The original showed him creating a massive Illusion and then doing it again for his fight. In Dark Moon, he still has Illusion Powers, but he has mastered them. Maybe this could have been King Boo still not out of the shadows of being one of Bowser's high ranking Lackeys, alongside King Bob-omb, Petey Piranha, and Kamek respectively. He is only one of the two villains, with the other being Kamek, to be a major antagonist to a respective protagonist. Mario having Bowser, Luigi with King Boo, and then Yoshi has Kamek. I have't beaten Luigi's Mansion yet, but I so far just see myself saying that Dark Moon is just better.

Since other people have covered my other desired comments way better than I'd be able to...I just feel like I should point out that the portraits are reliant on how well you do the boss fight. After you brought up the "Ranking" system, I was waiting for you to bring it up, and that was, um...yeah.
More specifically, it's tied to the pearls you collect from them, which gives extra incentive to avoiding literally anything that can hit you, and, imo, also makes it an overall more replayable game, for me anyway. Not necessarily for the score, personally, as much as for the really good art, and also some of the bronze frames in the 3DS version would make me feel bad if I actually had the game.
Also, you're clearly more of a gameplay over story/character sort of guy from the videos I've seen so far, but I absolutely love the quotes from the portrait ghosts and Luigi, and it's kinda irritating that you keep saying that none of it's interesting. Sure, it's not a cinematic masterpiece and all, but it does flesh out Luigi a little more, makes mention to Mario's personality (that between some other stuff allowed ZoomZike to make a solid video of what likely went down when Mario entered the mansion by himself), and does still give the ghosts character, even if it's not much. What's more haunting (pun not intended) for me is the origin story of some of the ghosts, and the light implications that there's still something more to the mansion than just pure illusions, depending on how you look at the facts you're given.
Of course, I get that sort of thing doesn't appeal to many people. Just bugged me that all of it was brushed aside as nothing worth looking at when that is yet another thing down to personal preference, which you've been good at handling in other things...not sure what went wrong here.

Basically if you shine them too far away they'll instantly disappear so you can't suck them in, hence the ability to turn off the flashlight in the original.
    It's a poorly explained feature.
