Dude did you notice the bending TRAINING? The earth dude is training them like EARTHBENDERS, forcing them to stand still and firm and block attacks, instead of like AIRBENDERS whose entire bending style focuses on dodging and movie around like the wind? This is the birth of an entirely new culture and bending style that crosses air nomad and earth kingdom cultures. Nobody really mentions it, it's such a show don't tell episode.
@@zeallust8542 It's a way of showing (not telling) how cultures mix. Toph earthbended mud I think? I think it was in the drill episode and maybe another episode? Sandbending is similar to airbending, but you could probably do waterbender techniques. Mixing techniques has so much potential for characters and for story

Both of these arent necessarily mixing, its just that they all had multiple elements together. For the slurry, im sure katara was just bending the water and toph was bending the rocks in it, but still, mixing styles a little bit
Team Anti Avatar has SO MUCH CHARACTER. They actually interact with each other and have individual personalities. They're a group, they're friends. Which is WILD since villains usually don't have positive, friendly personalities with anyone, they're evil. These guys are bros, chums, pals, two are dating. They are literally just Team Avatar but if they were bad guys. Which is awesome.
Season 1 was only supposed to be one season and then they added season 2 for no more seasons after that. But finally they greenlit 2 seasons, and brought back the original animation studio for book 1 and book 2 finale. So the writing is a lot more cohesive and the transition between book 3 and 4 and WAYYYYY more smooth. There’s the deets haha
Actually, S3 and 4 were greenlit separately. But they given more of a heads up that there'd be a S4 passed. It's why it still felt like S3 could've been the end of the series, but was still left a bit open, just in case. Also why they skipped 3 years, instead of just a few months.
If I read correctly in a statement Bryke made, they had actually planned on making season 1 with Amon/equalists as the main villains for multiple seasons. In the end Nickelodeon ended up screwing then over majorly in terms of the production schedule.

ATLA originally got okay'd for 3 seasons after the 2 pt pilot. That allowed the creators to plan out a single cohesive arc. Korra wasn't so lucky. It was originally only signed for 1 season with no promising outlook to get more than that. So the creators wrote a contained story in season 1 that would have ended the korra series by the Book 1 finale. Only after season one proved popular did Nickelodeon order another season. But only 1 more. So the writers kinda got stuck with the same issue as Season 1. Both were pretty much self contained stories, but left nuggets for more just in case. After Season 2, Nickelodeon ordered the rest of the show, which the creators said would be 2 seasons. Finally they had a larger volume of episodes to create a single continuous and sensical arc. We saw what they could do in ATLA when they had time to develop characters and plot lines. Season 1 + 2 of Korra didn't get that. But we definitely see that same top tier quality shine through between Season 3 and 4 in Korra. So have fun! This is what the show could have been all the way through if Nickelodeon werent idiots and respected the ATLA creators
Nickelodeon is to blame for season 2 being what it was. It had great potential to dive deeper into the dark avatar aspect. Imagine. Season 1 also had such strong potential with amon, but I felt that one was flushed out better. Season 2 quality was greatly affected negatively by nickelodeon
Would have been great to see Amon's story fleshed out more and then later on, this season's antagonists could still rise as a counter force to Amon. Both sides fighting for their own imagined way of restructuring society to be more "equal"
I also believe that Korra was originally going to only be 5 episodes or so but Nick demanded more and then after everything was story boarded and all they canceled a bunch of episodes so season 1 was only 13 or so And they kept promising stuff but they cut budgets

Nick really fucked over Korra. Which doesn’t come as a surprise since they fucked over ATLA as well when it was airing. They took Korra off air as well and here is the rundown what happened Season 2: Nick shuffled it around to a whole bunch of different time slots, ending up in a really bad timeslot on Friday nights. They also pulled it off of Nick for a while and put it on Nicktoons, then put it back on Nick. At the very least, they were still advertising for Korra at this point (at least, I remember plenty of ads for the episode with Wan), and they had the episodes up online. Edit: There were also budget issues with the animation (they used a different studio for most of Season 2's episodes), and a lot of people who know more about artsy stuff than I do had a lot of issues with Season 2. Season 3: They leak a bunch of episodes. Oops. Then they announce the airdate and release the trailer only one week before the air date. There are hardly any ads, and they don't release the episodes online. Then they start doubling up episodes every week. Still in the same bad timeslot. They make a point of saying "you can't watch this online or anywhere else." They go back to one a week, I think without any announcement. They pull all episodes after this Friday with no notice and no explanation, leaving the creators to take to social media to assure their feeaked-out fans that Korra hasn't been canceled. That part about "you can't watch this on line?" They lied. It's going to be exclusively on line now. All of this nonsense has made viewership steadily drop off and ratings decline. Although admittedly, the terrible romance subplots and the general lack of character development in the first two seasons likely didn't help.

I love the detail that the Ba Sing Se dudes are trying to train the Airbenders like how they train Earthbenders, planting their feets on the ground and just pushing air, Aka. The worst fucking way to teach someone how to airbend. They're legit the opposite of each other.
A good teacher adapts their teaching style to the student's ability. (A bad teacher just screams when the student fails) The thing about the new airbenders is they're a combination of earth kingdom and air nomad. And because of the Earth Queen their fighting style is a combination of airbending and earthbending stances. Like how early Republic City was a mix of fire settlers and earth natives. This is how cultures mix becoming something new. And all of this is shown and not told, most people don't even realize how much character and meaning the training scenes have.
This episode explains why Book 1 Korra was so sheltered, they were scared of letting her travel because of Zaheer's crew. It's awesome they bring this plot point back
I think it was a really good creative writing choice to have them rescue a bunch of airbenders from the queen instead of finding them all over, because ofcourse the people got a family but it's not like they can go back to Ba Sing Se anyway, this seems to be the next best thing.

The biggest problems in Korra stem from development issues and limitations from the distributors. If you have noticed the changes in animation quality, the studio in Korea that handled animations for the storyboards on season one left the project because of the massive overwork and burnout it took to make the first season. The second season had a less experienced studio and was pressured to be rushed by Nickelodeon. Season 3 is where Korra found its footing again, they were given clearer parameters for how many episodes they would get, and they found a balance with the original animation studio that allowed for solid animation without overworking the animators. The people who make avatar are incredible and its so sad that they aren't given the trust and respect they deserve by the business side of animation.

Yep Sokka in there, maybe katara too, that's why we saw wooden prison for eartbender (the scamming episode), cold prison for firebender (boiling rock) and hot prison for waterbender (the desert and hama episode)
So I did mention this on one of your Korra videos a while ago but with a "idk if you want to know about how the bts affected the story b/c it is a minor spoiler for how each season plays out," but since you asked for it this time, here it is again in as short of a story as I can make it: The original AtLA was guaranteed a full 3 seasons from the start of it's production, thus the long 3 season story format of the show. But after it had released, the company changed its policies so that their shows were only given 1 season at a time and needed to "earn" each of their next seasons. ATLoK was only given one set season to work with at first, there was no 2nd season to them yet, but everyone expected them to succeed. However, once it was announced that the next Avatar was a girl in a "boys' cartoon," the higher up executives decided that the show was dead before even a single episode had aired. They then began to fuck with the show in however way they could, from limiting (or eliminating) it's marketing/advertising, only giving the new episodes the shittiest TV air times, to moving the show to "online only" mid-season. Anyways, season 1 wraps up and the show did good enough for a season 2. Except, Nickelodeon doesn't tell the studio about this when they should have, I believe halfway through season 1 airing. Instead, they delay telling them until it is about 6 months before they would need to air their first episode for season 2. This is why season 2 is generally considered bad, b/c they pretty much had no time to do anything with it. When animation on a TV series can take anywhere from 2-7 months depending the scope of the series and the content of the scenes, you realize just how little time they had to get it all done. After this, ATLoK and it's production studio were beaten down pretty badly, but they still able to "earn" their 3rd season. It is at this point that I don't quite know exactly what happens in what order, but either right after season 3 entered production or aired, they were told that they were going to be getting a 4th season. However, halfway through season 3, the new episodes were taken off of the TV schedule and the show became "online only." I believe it was also around this time when it was confirmed that Korra was going to be ending or cancelled, but they would be guaranteed in getting their 4th season. It is around this time where the ATLoK studio basically decided, "screw the Nickelodeon executives, we are going to do whatever the fuck we want with our show." This eventually leads to some of the most unique decisions made in a children's' animated cartoon up to this point in time when it was released, but if I were to say anything more, it would be spoilers, so that is where I leave it. I hope this gives you a little looks-see's as to what was plaguing the Legend of Korra series at the time, and there are plenty of other videos on YT that explain this in further and better detail than I laid out here if you're interested. This bitch took down Eska and Desna, who are shown to be Expert/Master Waterbenders themselves, simultaneously. Then, WITHOUT arms, creates a working ice drill around her legs. You could say Ming-Hua is the most waterbendery waterbender, since she can adapt and move with the flow, turning her arms into anything she needs at the time. She's the most like water.

so, basically season 1 was all there was ever supposed to be for Legend of Korra. Then, when Nickelodeon noticed people liked LOK, they ordered another season. When Korra gets her bending back and goes into the Avatar State and Tenzin calls her "Avatar Korra" that was her becoming a fully realized avatar which signifies the end of her journey. But, fans wanted more, so Nick greenlit another season but they had to start right away and their contract with their old studio was used up so they had to change studios. Aside from that, they basically had to take a story that had an end and sort of bs a way to continue the story. Book 2 basically was a straight to dvd disney sequal to the "LOK miniseries" but Nick shortly greenlit Book 3 right afterwards and that gave them time to come up with a more cohesive story and also gave them time to renegotiate a new contract with their old studio.
I think for the most part the writing & directing teams for books 2 &3 are the same. Both books 1&2 had only 1 season orders, soo they had to tell a limited story with potential for future stories. Alot that happened in book 2 had too in order for an even better story to emerge goin into 3. They jus really found their footing this go round.
Season 2 was a rush job, in more ways than one. SInce they only planned for one 12 episode season, when they were told to make another season, they didn't have anything planned and had a limited time to start it. That's one of the reason the first half of season 2 was animated by a different studio, their go-to studio was already scheduled to work on a different show cause they thought they were just doing that first season of korra and that's it. Season 3 and 4 had more time to plan out and flesh out, but did not come without its own issues. I think season 4 shows that more (with budget cuts and stuff) but season 3 was screwed over by Nickalodeon too. I remember that half the season got leaked months before season 3 premiered, then half way through the season, they pulled it off air completely and released the rest of the season only on Nickalodeon's own crappy website, with no warning at all. I remember a ton of people thought it had just been straight off canceled. Then season 4 was release online only, again with little to no warning, and had major budget cuts. Guess its not too surprising, every season was screwed by the network at some point. Season 1 almost didn't happen just because the creators decided to make the Avatar (and main character) a girl. The creators had to prove them wrong with test screenings, but still...
TL:DR Nickelodeon fucked the studio because they kept ordering new seasons without telling them, also season 2 started out with different animators because the funding was cut going forward (yes scene for S3 and 4)
besides all the things about nick and the obstacles the faced with even making the seasons HAPPEN- personally i think the writers themselves made some faults in writing longform content/story when they IN FACT- did not have that on the table. imo season 3 works because season 4 was a given and they could write with the future in mind. season 1 is like a love letter, a oneshot, complete. season 2 (IMO) was written like there was gonna be more when they didn’t know if they could? they had less episodes. less budget. less support. less EVERYTHING- and still tried to write the same kind of story, which didn’t really work out….
I think that Nick finally aprobing more than one season at the time had to do a lot with how impproved this book feels compared to the previous ones, also I think they could count back with some more of the ATLA crew that they couldn´t afford before bcs miniseries budget
A few people have touched on it, but yeah seasons one and two were both made thinking that they would be the only seasons. Then for three and four they had a two season order so those seasons are kind of one giant story. S4 is very much a straight sequel to S3.

during the start of season 2 they had a change of studio and gradually it came back to the original studio after the Avatar Wan episode. i think overall season 2 has an ok story in general but characters are not written the way you would imagine them act like Korra being manipulated so easy and Unalaq being like flat out paper thin personality (unlike amon atlease has some intrigue in it). You should go check out Canipa Effect of both Avatar and Korra after youre done with the series, it just shows how beautifully done the show is both story and in management.
There was a severe time-crunch for Season 2, they weren't confirmed to be getting a second season until the last minute, and had unforgiving deadlines. That and bringing back the same studio from Air.
Yeah all that happened is they weren't rushed and they were given 2 seasons at once. Season 1 and 2 were both isolated and they thought that was the end of the show. But here they know they have 2 whole seasons to tell a complete story. No new writers, they just get to do what they're good at without being interrupted.

Nick really fucked over Korra. Which doesn’t come as a surprise since they fucked over ATLA as well when it was airing. They took Korra off air as well and here is the rundown what happened
Season 2:
Nick shuffled it around to a whole bunch of different time slots, ending up in a really bad timeslot on Friday nights.
They also pulled it off of Nick for a while and put it on Nicktoons, then put it back on Nick.
At the very least, they were still advertising for Korra at this point (at least, I remember plenty of ads for the episode with Wan), and they had the episodes up online.
Edit: There were also budget issues with the animation (they used a different studio for most of Season 2's episodes), and a lot of people who know more about artsy stuff than I do had a lot of issues with Season 2.
Season 3:
They leak a bunch of episodes. Oops.
Then they announce the airdate and release the trailer only one week before the air date.
There are hardly any ads, and they don't release the episodes online.
Then they start doubling up episodes every week. Still in the same bad timeslot.
They make a point of saying "you can't watch this online or anywhere else."
They go back to one a week, I think without any announcement.
They pull all episodes after this Friday with no notice and no explanation, leaving the creators to take to social media to assure their feeaked-out fans that Korra hasn't been canceled.
That part about "you can't watch this on line?" They lied. It's going to be exclusively on line now.
All of this nonsense has made viewership steadily drop off and ratings decline. Although admittedly, the terrible romance subplots and the general lack of character development in the first two seasons likely didn't help.

I love the detail that the Ba Sing Se dudes are trying to train the Airbenders like how they train Earthbenders, planting their feets on the ground and just pushing air, Aka. The worst fucking way to teach someone how to airbend. They're legit the opposite of each other.
A good teacher adapts their teaching style to the student's ability. (A bad teacher just screams when the student fails)
The thing about the new airbenders is they're a combination of earth kingdom and air nomad. And because of the Earth Queen their fighting style is a combination of airbending and earthbending stances. Like how early Republic City was a mix of fire settlers and earth natives. This is how cultures mix becoming something new.
And all of this is shown and not told, most people don't even realize how much character and meaning the training scenes have.

I think it was a really good creative writing choice to have them rescue a bunch of airbenders from the queen instead of finding them all over, because ofcourse the people got a family but it's not like they can go back to Ba Sing Se anyway, this seems to be the next best thing.

I like how they tell us it actually wasn't Aang who wanted her in that compound in this episode. That claim was complete horse hockey.
The biggest problems in Korra stem from development issues and limitations from the distributors. If you have noticed the changes in animation quality, the studio in Korea that handled animations for the storyboards on season one left the project because of the massive overwork and burnout it took to make the first season. The second season had a less experienced studio and was pressured to be rushed by Nickelodeon. Season 3 is where Korra found its footing again, they were given clearer parameters for how many episodes they would get, and they found a balance with the original animation studio that allowed for solid animation without overworking the animators.
The people who make avatar are incredible and its so sad that they aren't given the trust and respect they deserve by the business side of animation.

So I did mention this on one of your Korra videos a while ago but with a "idk if you want to know about how the bts affected the story b/c it is a minor spoiler for how each season plays out," but since you asked for it this time, here it is again in as short of a story as I can make it:
The original AtLA was guaranteed a full 3 seasons from the start of it's production, thus the long 3 season story format of the show. But after it had released, the company changed its policies so that their shows were only given 1 season at a time and needed to "earn" each of their next seasons. ATLoK was only given one set season to work with at first, there was no 2nd season to them yet, but everyone expected them to succeed. However, once it was announced that the next Avatar was a girl in a "boys' cartoon," the higher up executives decided that the show was dead before even a single episode had aired. They then began to fuck with the show in however way they could, from limiting (or eliminating) it's marketing/advertising, only giving the new episodes the shittiest TV air times, to moving the show to "online only" mid-season.
Anyways, season 1 wraps up and the show did good enough for a season 2. Except, Nickelodeon doesn't tell the studio about this when they should have, I believe halfway through season 1 airing. Instead, they delay telling them until it is about 6 months before they would need to air their first episode for season 2. This is why season 2 is generally considered bad, b/c they pretty much had no time to do anything with it. When animation on a TV series can take anywhere from 2-7 months depending the scope of the series and the content of the scenes, you realize just how little time they had to get it all done. After this, ATLoK and it's production studio were beaten down pretty badly, but they still able to "earn" their 3rd season.
It is at this point that I don't quite know exactly what happens in what order, but either right after season 3 entered production or aired, they were told that they were going to be getting a 4th season. However, halfway through season 3, the new episodes were taken off of the TV schedule and the show became "online only." I believe it was also around this time when it was confirmed that Korra was going to be ending or cancelled, but they would be guaranteed in getting their 4th season. It is around this time where the ATLoK studio basically decided, "screw the Nickelodeon executives, we are going to do whatever the fuck we want with our show." This eventually leads to some of the most unique decisions made in a children's' animated cartoon up to this point in time when it was released, but if I were to say anything more, it would be spoilers, so that is where I leave it.
I hope this gives you a little looks-see's as to what was plaguing the Legend of Korra series at the time, and there are plenty of other videos on YT that explain this in further and better detail than I laid out here if you're interested. so, basically season 1 was all there was ever supposed to be for Legend of Korra. Then, when Nickelodeon noticed people liked LOK, they ordered another season. When Korra gets her bending back and goes into the Avatar State and Tenzin calls her "Avatar Korra" that was her becoming a fully realized avatar which signifies the end of her journey. But, fans wanted more, so Nick greenlit another season but they had to start right away and their contract with their old studio was used up so they had to change studios. Aside from that, they basically had to take a story that had an end and sort of bs a way to continue the story. Book 2 basically was a straight to dvd disney sequal to the "LOK miniseries" but Nick shortly greenlit Book 3 right afterwards and that gave them time to come up with a more cohesive story and also gave them time to renegotiate a new contract with their old studio.

I think for the most part the writing & directing teams for books 2 &3 are the same. Both books 1&2 had only 1 season orders, soo they had to tell a limited story with potential for future stories. Alot that happened in book 2 had too in order for an even better story to emerge goin into 3. They jus really found their footing this go round.

Season 2 was a rush job, in more ways than one. SInce they only planned for one 12 episode season, when they were told to make another season, they didn't have anything planned and had a limited time to start it. That's one of the reason the first half of season 2 was animated by a different studio, their go-to studio was already scheduled to work on a different show cause they thought they were just doing that first season of korra and that's it. Season 3 and 4 had more time to plan out and flesh out, but did not come without its own issues. I think season 4 shows that more (with budget cuts and stuff) but season 3 was screwed over by Nickalodeon too. I remember that half the season got leaked months before season 3 premiered, then half way through the season, they pulled it off air completely and released the rest of the season only on Nickalodeon's own crappy website, with no warning at all. I remember a ton of people thought it had just been straight off canceled. Then season 4 was release online only, again with little to no warning, and had major budget cuts. Guess its not too surprising, every season was screwed by the network at some point. Season 1 almost didn't happen just because the creators decided to make the Avatar (and main character) a girl. The creators had to prove them wrong with test screenings, but still...

during the start of season 2 they had a change of studio and gradually it came back to the original studio after the Avatar Wan episode. i think overall season 2 has an ok story in general but characters are not written the way you would imagine them act like Korra being manipulated so easy and Unalaq being like flat out paper thin personality (unlike amon atlease has some intrigue in it). You should go check out Canipa Effect of both Avatar and Korra after youre done with the series, it just shows how beautifully done the show is both story and in management.

There was a severe time-crunch for Season 2, they weren't confirmed to be getting a second season until the last minute, and had unforgiving deadlines. That and bringing back the same studio from Air.
Yeah all that happened is they weren't rushed and they were given 2 seasons at once. Season 1 and 2 were both isolated and they thought that was the end of the show. But here they know they have 2 whole seasons to tell a complete story. No new writers, they just get to do what they're good at without being interrupted.
