I like Ainz archetype more. He second guesses himself often, but never doubts himself and always tries to make the best of any situation. He might not realize that he actually is as smart as he is but he always puts his best foot forward and listening to his inner monolog makes his general inexpressiveness more endearing.
I like the villain that was the hero especially when they become the villain for a good reason, like if they hero killed the king because the king planned to sacrifice he's people for immortality full metal alchemists style
The great thing about Phillip was that Albedo and Demiurge was completely baffled at what he did, and thought that the kingdom might have an incredible strategy that they haven't throught of. But it's just Ainz who said that he might be just stupid. Demiurge also acknowledged that it's far easier to manipulate a person with above average intelligence, but it's nearly impossible to do the same for a complete fool, because you just can't reliably predict their actions.
Its not that hard to predict them, just imagine an ego (pride) filled person who thinks they are smart doing things impulsively with little thought. you might not be able to precisely guess what they do, but it gives you a basic idea.
@theonpointheavy4401 Its called psychology. Humans have a pattern of predictability. However, someone truly inept coupd very well be a outlier even amonsgt a crowd of idiots.
A thing to remember about Ainz/Momonga is he comes from a real dystopia and in a side story iirc about the real world, its mentioned his parents worked themselves massively just to put him through elementary school. So he is achieving this naturally high brain moves with an elementary level education. It's also why in Issekai quartet he is genuinely happy to go to high school while at the same time struggling because it is a schooling he never had access to.
The real life of Overlord is basically just Cyberpunk tbh- except you are not looking at it from an edgerunner's view in a free city state. You are looking at it from the view of a mid-to-lower class Japanese salaryman.
i don't remember if it was told anything about the father,i remember that the mother died one day while cooking for the overwork, after that him have to search work given that from his future pov of view him explain that something while coming to home him find body of childrens in the streets
mofo by any right ainz entire society should have imploded and eaten itself alive. demiurge would be the primary cause of it. mofo has no ability to lead and literally its plot contrivance that they are all ineplxicably loyal to him. especially demiurge who is arguably the most evil and pathetic of the lot. and i did not say convenience. i said contrivance. as in the plot be twisted.
Id research that Ainz real IQ is an dropout highschooler that have game knowledge and good acting skills, he is basically above average adolescents IQ level.
There's a skit on Johnny Bravo when he played a supercomputer in chess and causes it to short circuit from stupidity; that's Philip. He doesn't outsmart anyone, but his own natural stupidity does stump them.
@@mahistv They expect to be smarter than everyone (except Ainz). Still, even they can't expect someone to be that stupid like Demiurge said when talking about Jircniv in volume 9: "Reading the movements of a slightly-above-average intellect that imagines himself a genius is easier than trying to predict the actions of a complete moron.”
Phillip is the type of guy who his dad buys an expensive car for, but he wants a motorcycle, then he sells the car for 1/3 of its cost to buy a used motorcycle and uses the leftover money to take Ashley out for rides and buy her clothes, and he tells his dad that he can make money delivering food with the motorcycle, which he can't do with the car, so selling the car was a smart move.
One thing I like about Ainz is that he never really comes off like an idiot who need everything spoon-fed or had bouts of plot enabling idiocy. Just exactly what he is supposed to be; an average joe who is showed into a position that is way over he has any experience (which is why he often uses modern incorporate management system because that's his closest point of reference to an actual leadership- he was chosen as a second guild master mostly because he was even tempered and generally agreeable, not because he was some charismatic leader by birth) he is really good when dealing with things he knows (like games mechanics and PvP) and can pull this wise overlord schtick because he was into roleplaying and played that character for years. But when operating outside of his wheelhouse or under time crunch he will not make the optimal decisions because most of people won't.
Yes and as for me it is really interesting that nobody in the world understands his actions. As you said, Ains often acts relying on modern incorporate management but nor denizens of nazaric nor new worlders simply don't understand this pattern
you also have to keep in mind that in Ainz’s original world he doesn’t have an education beyond the high school level because of the corporate overlords controlling the pricing of schooling making his corporate know how his only real strength
Well, in the novel there have been a few instances where he did act like a complete idiot. To be honest, I think he became incresingly dumb in the last volumes for some reason...
No way is he an average joe. But yeah, he was a normal human before getting isekai'd. I think he was originally from a dystopian world... that's why he can tolerate all the human sacrifices he's been seeing. The elder lich trait of nullifying his emotions helps a lot too, but that shouldn't be enough.
@@mahistv Yeah it's like, we killed our king and want to swear loyalty to you... You basically just admitted that you'd turn on your ruler if backed into a corner, not abandon, turn against, it's a total flip. They not only proved to be disloyal, but also short-sighted. It'd be one thing if you were approached, and made the offer, "Submit to me and bring me your leader's head." If that happened, ok fair enough we have it made as a request, and thus if you did do that, while it still shows you're not loyal, it does show you follow orders.
@mahistv That comment got me thinking... Just yesterday, I finally escaped retail slavery into a $78K salary job, able to start before Black Friday. I asked if I could start on the Monday after to help my current workplace survive the hardest weekend of the year since it's so close. Ty
Yah, my friends said they dont like Overlord because Ainz is dumb, and i rebutted, yah because you watch dragonball. I watch countless isekai and ainz is my second best character because of his way of thinking.
"That's not psychopath behavior. They're just evil!" IDK why, but that line floored me. Something hilarious about the literal devil that create human farms not even being a psychopath is just kind of great. (And correct. Most farmers aren't psychopaths either.)
Psychopathy is mostly about not being limited by morality in a brain chemistry level. He is healthy, just that his brain is inherently apathetic to human pain by design, no mental impairment here.
@@gustavonomegrande It's just being emotionally detached. We have fully functional emotional centra, and perfect capability to understand others emotional states. It's just that we don't. I say it's the evolutionary drive to be superior, psychopathy is what is necessary to survive. You need someone who can fight without it affecting their emotional state. You need someone who doesn't get PTSD from Soldiering. You need someone who can punish those who do bad things in society. The biggest problem is that we've no outlets for psychopaths to act in today, which can lead to antisocial behavior. I could take the life of a toddler with no emotional distress, but I could just as easily play with said toddler, raise it as my own, etc. People tend to view us as evil, we're not evil, we're just good at doing actions that are "evil" in nature, like raising a lamb for slaughter. People today fear the primal nature of mankind, and psychopaths are the manifestation of primality.
@@livedandletdie "I say it's the evolutionary drive to be superior, psychopathy is what is necessary to survive." Wait, how did you arrive to this conclusion? Psycopaths have a hard time understanding with empathy because empathy requires you to put yourself in the other's shoe. But a psycopath will never be in the other's shoe because he will never feel what the other person is feeling. Not because he is cold or stoic, but because he biologically can't. They could kill their entire family and not even bat an eye were it not for the transactional value they get out of them. For this very reason they don't get along well with others. Since they can't love anyone, they use people to achieve their goals. Imagine a being that takes the quote "the end justifies the means" to everything he does. Sure, if they were alone in the jungle it might be useful but in a community of people it backfires since psycopaths make the community worse. I do agree that psycopaths aren't evil but then again I would wonder what you mean by "evil" and what even is "evil" at all. Is a murderer "evil"? What if he is just sick in the head? What if he can't help himself? What if you would do the exact same thing if you were on his position? Would you be evil then?

I find it funny when people talk about Ramposa as a good king. He was the king of drugs, slavery, forced conscription, the big R, slave labour, random killing and enslaving of civilians. Those things were common under his rule and only started changing when Renner and Zanac gained influence. It is these policy changes that caused the split into the noble and royal factions. That split isn't a decades long running issue, but a fairly recent one of the last years in the kingdom. There is a reason the protectors of humanity deemed the kingdoms current system irredeemable despite the recent improvements. The reason they tried to kill Gazef was not because they disliked him, but to accelerate the governments fall to replace it with one that does its job of protecting humans. The people that know the truth of the world fight day in and out to prevent humans from being turned into livestock for far more powerful races allowed the kingdom to be and even helped in its creation. Yet Ramposa fucked up so much that they said, well this cannot go on, we gotta do something when his shit even started to spread outside of the kingdom.
@@mahistv The biggest plot issue this come with is Gazef himself. His eternal loyalty to Ramposa makes no sense considering the horrors the peasants had to live in under his rule. I am not exactly sure about the time frame when he became the head warrior, but I assume it was before Renner and Zanac gained influence. The reason Barbaro was the why he was, was because he was the spoiled first child that didn't know a different kingdom, which is why he had connections with the eight fingers. The eight fingers continued the decadent noble lifestyle he was used to all his life.
@@oviiembem6302 Morally good is something I doubt unless his was entirely incompetence. He had decades under his belt were the people suffered under his reign until his late born second and third child came along. For those decades he was the sole ruler of the nation. The fact that he chose to protect a corrupt noble over the people even after witnessing the war at the katze plains is a clear indicator of who he is at his core and that even tens of thousands of people are not the even closely the same worth to him as one of his nobles. He also didn't offer himself out of a sense of responsibility, but because he knew he already lost his power to his son. I would say that his second and third child caused him to soften up in the recent years.
@@seynoonrae2474 nobody knows his past since it wasn't shown, all I know is during his reign in the novel and anime (when he was old) he might have been a tyrant during his younger years, but as depicted in the show and source, he is trying to be a good person even if it is only to look good for his children. So at that point, his direction in life is morally good, but he lacks the capability to make it work.
I love that when Albedo showed to kill Phillip's dad, his dad wasn't afraid and started venting about his son then made Albedo promise to make his son suffer. To which *She agreed* . For a moment Albedo was on the same wavelength with a human and it was over how much they both hate Phillip.
People often complain that overlord is boring because "MC is OP and there no matching opponent" but this show is not a shonen, it is not about it. Overlord is a bunch of stories of what different people do in almost the same situation but according to their own inteligence, experience and perspective
Yup. It reads more like an anthology with some reoccurring characters, but more focused on the how the world functions through snippets of different character’s POV. it is part of what i love and hate about overlord. You get a nice build up of a bunch of different characters in one book and then they might just disappear into the background in the following books.
Not that you can't build a shonen with a OP MC, in general handling main characters with too much power is hard and requires a creative writer with talent and skill. But that is because getting stakes in such stories is harder and many authors don't even know how to add stakes, but as long as stakes and conflict is added well, you can make a even a shonen with a powerful MC. Heck, Dragon Ball and I mean the very first saga of Dragon Ball was a shonen with an overpowered character and the only time he experiences hardship he turns into a giant monkey and even more overpowered, yet it was interesting to read and fun. In general if your MC is OP it is best toe stick either to comedy, to morality struggles with the MC or to show how other characters act and react around the MC. In a way Ainz is not the protagonist of Overlord, he is the plot device. The protagonist are the characters in each volume that surround him.
This series feels like a simulation sandbox where you as the player "Nazarick" is just watching stuff unfolds and only react when necessary. The MC being OP doesn't matter much because he's not trying to overwhelm. We often see him going for diplomacy and manipulation rather than outright destorying everyone
Well that is part of the problem. It makes the plot predictable cause they make it literally impossible for the mc t olose at anything, and makes any of the charactesr that get focus either certain t owin or certain to lose depending on what side they are on. Not even his minions are vulnerable to harm. even the weakest are more powerful than literally anything aroud n......... The worst part is that the person writing this shit deliberately wrote every aspect to give ainz the edge. His evil psychopathic minions re inexplicably loyal to him, even onse are vile and disgusting as demiurge who by all means shoulda betrayed him and the rest of them already for his own amusement. Even that one vampire chick's betrayal, was just cause magic item, not cause she actually has free will to even betray him. The mechanics of the world is also built to only empower him further. I mean he literally summoned a buncha chtulu monsters and the writer deliberately made said chtulu mosnter no different than videogame summons and ignores anything interesting. Coulda had it that the summons are impossible for him t ocontrol all at once and they turn on him cause their true master is not ainz or something, being the children of a greater entity. But instead, just like npcs in a videogame. Hell the faith based elements don't even have acutal higher beings, cause god forbid anything in universe is acutally outright moer powerful than ainz. he got a dude to worship a rock cause all his magic sitll operates on videogame logic. And he somehow outsmarts people who ACTUALLY run ENTIRE ACTUAL NATIONS not fulla willess humonculous, who isn't a uneducated dude from a near apoclytictified world cause of course. Alot of the time it seems like only ainz and his minions operate on videogame logic, while everyone else in universe operates on biology. its bad when i would have prefered the psychopathic murderous knife bitch to have acutally blown up ainz haed and got away if simply cause that be a loss of SOME kind. Als o he fact that in unvierse ainz level assholes have popped up several times and the world has not developed a system to deal with them. Even the most powerful beings in the setting don't just join up and rofl stomp him and his minions while he is fresh and new which would be the smart thing to do considering the damage prior incursions have caused. So there is nothing it actually provides except for torture porn and more interesting not ainz related plots, that ainz invalidates in totality by just being there. Remove the venier of style and its, really just generic isekai power fantasy stuff written by someone who just doens't understand proper stortytelling. And maybe has some sick thoughts himself when in all reality, the evil medieval assholes of the setting are better people than the main character...... and doesn't seem to realize that villains are meant to be overcome, which is what ainz is meant to be. but christ forbid he actually loses.
I was so mad bc the nobles decision was so real. They were "we can't give up we are noble" and then in their last moments they betray the king and kill him for a chance of submission omg
The first time I saw him I thought he was just a cocky bastard from the aristocracy, but over time I began to admire him. His way of being even earned him the admiration of Ainz and he even reconsidered canceling the invasion... That says a LOT about him.
@@mahistv Speaking of, IIRC Philip's actions are explained in more detail in the light novels, unlike the anime which is basically just the Cliffs Notes version due to time constraints, which is why you had to watch it 3 times to fully get it as they couldn't put everything in.
One of my favourite theories, that Ainz IS ACTUALLY a super high IQ being because the character of Momonga was originally made for Roleplay and being Super Smart WAS part of his character's "lore" Aka Flavor text, and as we know flavor text can become real in the New World.
I honestly don't think the playable characters would have had any lore written about them. Most games wouldn't want you to make too much of a backstory for your character, but instead have you create their story while playing the character. It is possible though, but I personally like the fact that most of his actions are truly made by the guy that was transported into his avatar's body, but simply got greatly influenced by the nature of his character's race and abilities. Like how his emotions get suppressed and he doesn't care much about human lives thanks to his nature as an undead. The lore of his race would have a say on how he reacts, but that would be it.
Yeah, but because it's not his original inteligence, it lies dormant as his subconscient, thus he makes the right decisions subconsciously and then consciously makes a reason to follow through with said decision.
It most likely effects him subconsciously. As he actually is from a dystopian world and he didn't have a good education in the real world. His parents had to work really hard to pay even for elementary level education.
As someone with a bit of avobe average IQ, I can say that Ainz could be a very high IQ and still think of himself as average and act in ways that don't show his intelligence. Intelligence makes you think quicker and with a "higher quality", but it doesn't materialize intricate plans out of thin air. Planning is a skill, management is a skill, logic is a skill, etc. Just having high IQ but the mind of a severely uneducated man is like having a super computer with very bad software. At most you may have simple yet good ideas from your subconscious but those would be uninformed ideas nevertheless. I think this is what happens with Ainz, he now has a much higher IQ than before but his experience is still the same as before. Is not like high IQ is going to give you instantly the ability to plan at demiurge's level, you need to learn to do that. There is only one thing where Ainz actually has experience and skill and that is using his game character powers... and look and behold, he is extraordinarly competent at that. The thing is that there are no manuals on how to be an overlord, and he can't learn by experience much because he did not start as a two timer overlord but as a full blown one with lots of powerful servants, so he can't afford to learn from his mistakes that much. IDK why people think high IQ means you know a lot and can come up with very good plans in a second. You do not need high IQ to create very good plans, high IQ just makes you get the plans "in a second" and Ainz comes up with his plans very quickly. They may not be that good but that is because he doesn't know how to make good plans. He is the equivalent of putting a super gifted kid who has been taught nothing but pre-school levels of knowledge as the CEO of a company. That kid is going to have to wing it a lot, and so does Ainz. Sure high IQ lets you wing it a lot with rather good levels of success, and Ainz does just that. I am about 15% more intelligent than the average, not super gifted by any means but still something. Due to life situation I was never able to get that high of an education as I had to start working to support my parents who could not work nor support themselves.Thig is... I wanted to be a programmer, even if at that point I had no idea of how to code. I could not even learn as my job at that point was soo emotionally taxing that I was unable to do anything mental after it, so I could not even study. I decided I rather try than be sorry, so applied for a programming job, lied about qualifications and winged the interview. I learned how to code in that job, It was a constant struggle. Being "Intelligent" just made me able to keep winging it, it did not give me some super power to code by instinct or made me learn everything in 3 days. Eventually after years I got enough skill and know-how to be skilled at it and only then my intelligence was able to shine and the actual "genius" ideas started to come, until that it was a process of winging it and winging it even more while I learned the role. I think this is what happens with Ainz, he may actually have the intelligence that his character is supposed to have but he for sure has not the training and skills for the position he is now. So he keeps winging it, successfully winging it. I can relate to that very well, he is a good portrayal of a how an unskilled intelligent person works, just lots of impostor syndrome, lots of winging it successfully and trying to extrapolate from what you know as much as you can.
Which is stupid cause how does the stat translate into a living world. it doesn't cause it might just mean he has raelly good memory, or can read or learn fast. it doesn't equal knowledge he wouldn't hve. it literally just an excuse to make hmi op by the writer. mofo handicapped his entire world so it would revolve around ainz and he'd have no disadvantages..... no real ones anyone that actually cause him to lose and stagger. despite thsi world havign several incursions by assholes like ainz in the past and somehow, there aer not counter measures in place.
"Maybe he's not a planner" " There's no way in hell!" That exchange always makes me laugh. I had to watch it four times just to appreciate its full beauty. One thing we should remember about the Workers of Baharuth, is that their presence in Nazarick /was/ a scheme by Ains. He specifically planted rumors about a newly discovered crypt to attract them to Nazarick. He did this for two reasons to assess the Workers abilities and strength as well as to have a reason to formally contact Jirkniv. Ains, or rather his player, is an intuitive intelligence. While not a planner or schemer per se he does know how to put a plan into action to accomplish a goal.
@andonbailey9656 - Its been awhile since I saw the "workers" episode, but didn't Albedo or Demiurge create this plan? Ainz is in the colosseum waiting to fight some of the workers who entered Nazarick. Ainz instructs his faction to cover their ears while talking to the workers and said something along the lines that he disagreed with the plan, but it had its merits? I interpreted the "disagreed" comment as someone else thought of it, and Ainz was merely going along with it to not reveal he isn't what everything thinks him to be. Again, its been awhile since I watched that episode, so my recollection may be off.
@@spike_667 It's possible. I don't have access to the episode to check and Ains going along with a subordinate's plan is very much in character. But we can also look to his plan with the dwarves as an example of Ains' political acumen.
@@andonbailey9656 During Ainz's fight in the arena while having his subordinates cover their ears, Ainz specifically says that he never liked this plan. It is heavily implied that this is one of Demiurge's plans, and Ainz is going along with it because... well he's smart enough to trust the (arguably) smartest guardian to have made a great plan.
In Riyuro's defense, he was willing to negotiate, but Shalltear was expecting a quick yes or no answer. And it makes sense, you're not going to submit to someone you've neither seen nor heard of just like that. It took Jircniv a while to realize, Riyuro didn't even have 30 seconds to think about it. And as soon as he saw the power of his enemies, he quickly acted to meet the requirements they demanded of him. An excellent leader.
A bad situation to be in with little chance of it going much better than it did. They barely wanted to follow the dragons and switching to a different tyrant wasn’t going to happen peacefully. Dude knew his tribe would absolutely try to rebel eventually. without a show of force. Didn’t help that shalltear was itching to fight and reclaim some of her pride from being brainwashed. I do however love how Riyuro and the Blood Emperor are now trama buddies. In some way, they also enjoy being in situation since leading is a stressful job. Now if they get any push back, they pull out the old reverse Karen trap card of “got a problem, go speak to my supervisor.” And they absolutely know no one is going to man up and go over to the Ainz stronghold to file a complaint.
Riyuro still failed to adapt. The equivalent of aliens landing in DC just happened, and he failed his Diplomacy against massive unknowns. Not enough caution. The only upside is he gets a second chance, he didn't actually die. But even in hindsight he knew he failed by just not being good enough, not being savvy enough. Jircniv was sent an emissary via dragon attack and lost one of his elite knights, but he quickly agrees to going to another kingdom, in person, while he was the Emperor. The lesson meant to be learned is that it costs very little to get on your knees, if it means not dying.
@afelias give Riyuro more credit. It’s nothing like aliens landing in DC. More like a small group of soldiers landing in front of your city and demanding that you surrender. Except you only have 10 seconds to do so. If you accept you could end up being insubordinated to a complete joke of a group. They have no idea of their power. They could range anywhere from gods to a group of phillips drunk on their own meager power

Finally someone talking about this aspect of Overlord. Having read the LN twice now I can say that the thing that makes the series soo great is the way the characters are built and how their inteligence plays into every movement of the plot, and by that very reason Volume 10 is my favorite, because it centers on Jircniv and his overthinking, coupled with Ainz's supernatural way of acting that makes everything fall into place. Edit: And hot damn I forgot his talk with Ainzach, that shit always gets me giddy after reading it. Anyways, great vid.
about "Ainz's supernatural way of acting that makes everything fall into place", my theory is that he is actually as intelligent as he is supposed to be by his character, but his own personality and experiences makes him unable to perceive himself like that, so instead his intelligence is shown in a more "instinctual" manner, plans that are both consistent with his perceived level of intelligence AND that are actually genius occur to him. Demiurge wouldn't just bow down to some crap plan for that long as he is constantly analyzing Ainz, if Ainz plans were crap HE would notice even if he did not act on it and was still loyal. The fact that he really thinks that Ainz is so intelligent can only mean that Ainz is actually that intelligent.
@@diablo.the.cheaterI like that explanation and it makes sense, because I know that Ainz is intelligent, he's a great PvP tactician and taking everything he can do into account has made him look so intelligent in the past, or his skills as a negotiator like with Ainzach or Gondo, but there are moments that are just pure happenstance like the Jircniv incident and although it's a good canon explanation, we just gotta admit that the DM wanted the outcome and made the world move around what Ainz did to make everything fall into place. It still looks cool af and as a DM myself I've taken notes on the world building of overlord and the amount and quality of the plot it has without taking that much player agency.
@@diablo.the.cheater I've seen this theory pop up a few times, but there's one major problem with it. If you look at the stat sheets, Yggdrasil has no intelligence stat, and unlike NPCs, player characters don't have any hard-coded personalities or backstories. I'm not sure what exactly would cause his character to be any more intelligent than him.
@@shinymetagross1666 it could be the skill, or was it spell called dark wisdom, or flavor text from one of the over 600 spells/skills Ainz-sama learned
There's an aspect that you also must consider when considering the nobles. Remember, only a few people survived the incident with the empire. It was a slaughter after all. Most of the nobles “Mr. Satan” the idea of a massive spell killing everyone. So in essence, it was more than just their stupidity. Their refusal to believe it was more than a trick of the empire caused them to be arrogant. Even after receiving the reports, the nobles refused to believe anything that was told to them. Now consider the second-hand nobles who weren't raised with the intelligence of the first group, nor were they privy to the first-hand account of what happened, and you have a recipe that's doomed to fail the country
@@ghizghuth2088 He means that it's comparable to "a spooky story told to children" - as they haven't seen it actually happen and its so absurdly insane that its hard to believe for an average person.
I guess that's an apt explanation of it because that's stays in canon with the storyline of Overlord. The reason I use the term Mr. Satan is in reference to Dragon Ball Z. Mr. Satan tried to convince the people of the world that the Z fighters who fought against Cell were using tricks and stunts in order to give off the pyrotechnics in which they did for their techniques. In other words it's all smoke and mirrors.
It's a reference to Dragonball. Mr. Satan is a strong human who saw alien and human-like beings doing what can be considered magic. And he simply fool himself with the explanation they're just doing tricks using very thin wire, all staged.
3:50 I like the quick reference to Log Horizon, because I've always seen that Ainz and Shiroe embody the best of two different kinds of MMO players, made into the heroes of their own stories. Shiroe is a Bartle type Spade. He values knowledge and information and spends time in-game to have absolute mastery of the game from these aspects. When he wins, he wins because he has enough information over the situation to control everything to get his desired outcome. Ainz is a Bartle type Heart. His greatest skill is his people skills, his ability to smooth things over in a group so they keep working together. A lot of his knowledge is borrowed or taken from friends who freely taught him these things. That's why he can seem like an idiot, but keep making good decisions, because he understands how to trust the right people to do the right things for him, and gauge that trust even in situations where he may have been betrayed. If Shiroe's relative weakness, and one he was growing up to, was that he lacked more Heart qualities (Debauchery Tea Party members ended up in a schism), that's something he's slowly growing in during the events of Log Horizon. Similarly, Ainz is someone who kind of has to grow into a true Mastermind type because he feels he owes it to the people who come under his rule. Ainz is weakest when he can't rely on the borrowed power of others in some way. That's how Shalltear's rebellion seemed so climactic, after all; the story implies he's quite alone, but he brought enough borrowed power (not just actual combat power, but teachings from Punitto Moe on PvP) to get through it. Also, to defend Jircniv being paranoid... it's those qualities is how he became Emperor in the first place. He is simply acting the way he knows will lead to success, and it's honestly admirable that he is a ruler who possesses that sense of responsibility over his people. It's just a Hedgehog Dilemma between him and really any other rulers as to why he can't be honest with Ainz, and try to gain his trust in turn. It's almost a tragedy, but in the standards of Overlord, the fact that he's still alive shows that he hasn't actually done anything wrong.
Every action, literally every action performed by almost every single character in Overlord follows some line of reasoning, even including Phillip, mind you. This goes even harder when it comes to combat. Sometimes, I think adding inner monologues to the anime would've filled many gaps left by those hasty adaptations.
Phillip is the embodiment of an experienced player fighting a noob in a game. The fear of it comes from the fact that you can more or less guess where most enemies you fight will go to the best spots. Noobs tho can be literally anywhere. They can be on the first point despite everyone else being on 3rd or they can be perfectly right behind you once your team leaves to do something else. There's no way to know what they are doing or going because they don't have any clue themselves
@ghizghuth2088 Beginners are terrifying because even an intermediate/advanced players have their own strategy and pattern, noobs will go for random bs and it MIGHT just work because you don't know what the hell hes pulling next
It hadn't occurred to me before but Overlord without Momonga's internal monologue has the potential to be on par with Death Note w/out the internal monologues for how much it changes the vibe of the show, but for the opposite reason.
One thing about ainz that I tiene is important, is that he's no passive in his learning. My guy doesn't have a teacher, he's just watching other rulers and writing what he needs to do. I remember he had at least 3 notebooks filled with info to help him rule. He is intelligent, is just that he isn't knowledgeable
Thank you Mahis as always, we love your assessment and perspective. Its quite refreshing in a time where reviews offer no real insight and often feel like closed captions.
I think Shalltear is actually supposed to be dumb as she often needs things explained even when everyone else understands without an issue. She is built for combat and she excells at it, having only been beaten once in all of Ainz Ooal Gown's Yggdrasil days, during the raid that had over 1500 players and NPCs. She does begin learning later but oh well...
Agreed. Shalltear very much prefers a 'head straight through the wall' approach. At first I thought she was gonna be the "high and mighty thinks she's better than everyone" kind of character, but her ego isn't actually that huge. Add onto that that she actively asks when she doesn't understand something and doesn't play it off as "of course I know what's going on, I just wanted to make sure you do as well"
also to say psychopaths cant fall in love is a bit of a misnomer its not that those with psychopathy lack the capacity for these feelings its more a case of they very rarely feel them specialy in relation to others and in almost all cases prioritize themselves regardless of consequences as long as they benefit these are people that can in some cases commit atrocious acts for very little gain but because that gain is in there interest they can easily justify it because they lack almost any empathy which is why she can love climb yet treat him like her pet since it makes her happy to do so
I love the twins, they are that mix of honest to a fault, and kind of dumb. In one of the first episodes the twin with forest/terrain powers is asked if they can hide the tomb and says not really, but they could terraform the whole area into hills to hide the place. In one of the later episodes Ains and Shaltear think the dog monsters killed some death knights. The twin with them doesn't over think it and correctly concludes that the death knights just fell off the bridge. They tend to underthink and come to the correct answer.
that is to an extent how you write. you think of a vague cool idea, hint it early, and then flesh it out later using the hint you included earlier one piece has extreme amounts of setup and the author has admitted that he writes this way and usually has no idea what will happen 50 chapters from now. He just writes good setups and then figures out interesting way to use those setups With an LN, you have the benefit of often writing a story twice. So you can actually write it first and then on your second round make more detailed and interesting hints for stuff. But even that has its limits especially if LN and WN diverge
One thing why I love the Overlord series is that at any point in the story, you can track the mindset of a character plus map the things they know, based on that you can infer what their next action will be based on their own internal logic. Everyone acts logically based on their own principles + their knowledge, no temporary targetted stupidity/amnesia here.
Zanac was the character that suprised me the most. He is the GOAT of the kingdom, I was so sad that he died and wished he ruled the kingdom as its next ruler
This is a pretty good sum-up about the nature of intelligence, and thus the scope of their view. The light novels have a section that we'll soon see as a movie, of which one of the leaders of the holy kingdom is the head of paladins, Remedios Custodio. Her practical experience makes her a battlefield genius and surprisingly astute with intentions, but put her in a board room and she's a fish out of water. I'd go so far as to classify her under Idiot Savant intellect, if a new tier could be erected on the subject. Of course, there were others to cover her weaknesses and the light novels made a very good demonstration of divide and conquer on several fronts, but especially leadership like her leadership trinity she was part of.
The build-up in Overlord just is another level we're never seen before, where the political of kingdoms and empires were each other throats and Ainz is in the middle. So he let Demiurge and Albedo do the campaign like Warhammer 40K and C&C style of tactics. Yet, he took some least powerful races as his collection.
AFO not pouncing on Overhaul is dumb, but him making a giant superfist to beat All Might does make sense on two points. 1 It's about sending a message and beating All Might at his own game. 2Beating All Might then and there wasn't necessary, and just exposing that All Might wasn't All Might 24/7 was something AFO expected to be a victory in and of itself. Oh sure, the ideal outcome for AFO would have been shattering Toshinori's toothpick frame live on news being broadcast nationally, but AFO makes lots of plans and layers. He didn't just make a giant superfist, he went in with psychological warfare. He did underestimate Toshinori, but hubris is the classic villain failing (often paired with sadism for that personal touch), and if not for All Might learning from Deku, AFO would have won with his cheap tricks giving him openings for raw power. Raw power that wasn't even the main basket he was stockpiling resources in!
The problem is not having the story all written from the start, but having the later parts not contradict the ones before. It's hard but it's important
Something to note, modern science shows us psychopaths do feel emotions like empathy and love. Its just on a spectrum. Almost like autism and function.
17:17 it gets better, since those supplies were headed for humanitarian relief efforts, so in the comparison it's like robbing a high-profile governement charity in the open XD

14:01 where it gets even more interesting once you think (sorry for making this political) that the US is Ainz in WWII. where we didn't really "conquer" them normally, like we didn't take over the whole island and hold it for two years. no we just landed some teams on some islands to get a foothold and then just nuked them twice. and mind you no japanese doctor knew what radiation burns where or hell, any doctor at the time. where the patient still died not from the burns but of organ failure.
I've read the Overlord light novel more than five times now, and I couldn't be happier that TH-cam recommended this. It reminds me why I love Overlord so much, the phenomenal writing and intricate world-building are just on another level. The political dynamics, the geopolitics, and the deep history of the world feel so well thought out. The timing of the Baharuth Empire's invasions against the Re-Estize Kingdom, for instance, is a brilliant move you rarely see in Isekai. By invading during the harvest season, they effectively starve the Kingdom, weakening it over time, while strategically preserving their own elite knights, saving both money and years of training investment.

and unlike ainz, he's actually a good character. ... and ironically. unlike ainz he might be top of the foodchain when it comes to sinners, but he was vastly far from the strongest person in that room. I don't know who's more idiotic Phillip from Overlord or Zorzal from Gate JSDF. Both are incredibly delusional, hilariously arrogant and outright unable to change their mindset.
Ains is for me the most likeable, because I always love to see a character using existing knowledge to their advantage and trying to learn new things (scouting, spying, etc.). PS: 3:28, always love to see a DOS2 reference.
I already told you it would’ve been way too risky for all four One to try and take over halls power so soon and it’s likely that he didn’t even know where to find him.
Which archetype do you like more?
The intelligent psychopath they make for good antagonists and Renner adds uniqueness to the cast.
I like Ainz archetype more. He second guesses himself often, but never doubts himself and always tries to make the best of any situation. He might not realize that he actually is as smart as he is but he always puts his best foot forward and listening to his inner monolog makes his general inexpressiveness more endearing.
Pls do More about overlord 😢😢
I like the villain that was the hero especially when they become the villain for a good reason, like if they hero killed the king because the king planned to sacrifice he's people for immortality full metal alchemists style
My best archetype is "V rot mne kolbasu"
The great thing about Phillip was that Albedo and Demiurge was completely baffled at what he did, and thought that the kingdom might have an incredible strategy that they haven't throught of. But it's just Ainz who said that he might be just stupid. Demiurge also acknowledged that it's far easier to manipulate a person with above average intelligence, but it's nearly impossible to do the same for a complete fool, because you just can't reliably predict their actions.
Sasuga Ainz-sama
I love that part, and the reason why Ainz-sama has picked up on it, is because he himself doesn't overthink things as much
Its not that hard to predict them, just imagine an ego (pride) filled person who thinks they are smart doing things impulsively with little thought. you might not be able to precisely guess what they do, but it gives you a basic idea.

That's kinda sad and yet wholesome that he actually got to go in the end

IDK why, but that line floored me.

@@livedandletdie "I say it's the evolutionary drive to be superior, psychopathy is what is necessary to survive."
Wait, how did you arrive to this conclusion?
I agree. Being a good person does not equal being a good king.
He is a morally good king, but incompetent. Being ethically good and incompetent doesn't contradict each other.

Overlord is story about side characters except Nazarick trying to survive the calamity that is Nazarick.

"That's not psychopatihc behavior, they're just evil"
is something I never knew I needed to hear when creating D&D villains
It will go hard
I love how aniz is doing fake it till you make it it’s perfect 😂
I should have included that
"Maybe he's not a planner" " There's no way in hell!" That exchange always makes me laugh.
Hw can't plan a political scheme, or so he thinks. When he thinks about it through the lens of pvp combat, then it's totally in his ball game
@@CatacombD ah, well mystery solved then
In Riyuro's defense, he was willing to negotiate, but Shalltear was expecting a quick yes or no answer.
@@murkwithasmirk6877 It was aliens in DC. He didn't even know what they were. The last intel he had was that golems or something strange was involved. And now the people in front of him didn't match his intel at all.
@@murkwithasmirk6877 The soldiers rode in on one of the dragons they were supposed to be serving to and then without even a debate or concern, split their group into two as half of them went to handle the rest of the dragon rulers. Demiurge and his happy farm a lovely place for a vacation
Ah yes, everyone is happy there.

Nuke it from orbit
@@shinymetagross1666 it could also be translation, as in video games, or litrpgs, Intelligence and Magic tend to go hand in hand.
Was "Mr. Satan" supposed to be "misunderstand"? Honest question, I'm not familiar with the expression if it is one.
Ainz isn't really numb, he's just in over his head.
When it comes to ruling, yes. Other stuff, he is pretty capable
I even think it's why "beginner's luck" is a thing.
@ghizghuth2088 Beginners are terrifying because even an intermediate/advanced players have their own strategy and pattern, noobs will go for random bs and it MIGHT just work because you don't know what the hell hes pulling next
The mental gymnastics when we get to the dark elf village. Itll be one for the ages
Can't wait for Ain Bell Fior (or however you spell that)
I hope we get to see Mare's 1v1 for the ultimate sasugasm 😂
2:43 I haven't seen much of MHA but ARE YOU KIDDING ME, HE HAS THE ABILTIY TO DO THAT AND DIDN'T ABUSE IT???
Yes, there are some questions about certain powers over there
Read the MHA vigilante, the MC quirk literally gojo blue but the author decided to bend and fucked him over
It hadn't occurred to me before but Overlord without Momonga's internal monologue has the potential to be on par with Death Note w/out the internal monologues for how much it changes the vibe of the show, but for the opposite reason.
Haha, pretty much
12:40 that remark is actually bone chilling and something I’ve never thought of before.
It do be like that
Phillip is exactly what Napoleon meant when he said that an incompetent ally is more dangerous than a competent foe.
100% correct
One thing about ainz that I tiene is important, is that he's no passive in his learning. My guy doesn't have a teacher, he's just watching other rulers and writing what he needs to do. I remember he had at least 3 notebooks filled with info to help him rule. He is intelligent, is just that he isn't knowledgeable
Also worth noteing the real world of the 22ed century going to shit. Only rich people can even get into highschool so the megacorps can stay on top
Thank you Mahis as always, we love your assessment and perspective. Its quite refreshing in a time where reviews offer no real insight and often feel like closed captions.
I appreciate you appreciation!
Add onto that that she actively asks when she doesn't understand something and doesn't play it off as "of course I know what's going on, I just wanted to make sure you do as well"
Her entire build was min-maxed for combat potential as a mele fighter. Classic thing that gets minned in that build...intelegence
"Not Psychopath, just evil"
Love the description, needs to be used more
Haha, thank you
Now I'm imagining Renner skinning Cline and wearing him as shoes. They're just so comfy.
I don't think she would go there, but don't quote me on that
never thought i would hear "thats not psychopath , they're just evil" in a good way
Hehe, it took me a few tried to get the intonation right)
Polfnareff vs Hol Horse and Kakyoin vs Red hot Chilli pepper is a good example of decisions made based on character inteligence
also to say psychopaths cant fall in love is a bit of a misnomer its not that those with psychopathy lack the capacity for these feelings its more a case of they very rarely feel them specialy in relation to others and in almost all cases prioritize themselves regardless of consequences as long as they benefit these are people that can in some cases commit atrocious acts for very little gain but because that gain is in there interest they can easily justify it because they lack almost any empathy which is why she can love climb yet treat him like her pet since it makes her happy to do so
I love the twins, they are that mix of honest to a fault, and kind of dumb.
They are interesting in that regard
attack on titan feels the opposite where they are making explanations for things that they have said earlier
It actually does...
that is to an extent how you write. you think of a vague cool idea, hint it early, and then flesh it out later using the hint you included earlier
one piece has extreme amounts of setup and the author has admitted that he writes this way and usually has no idea what will happen 50 chapters from now. He just writes good setups and then figures out interesting way to use those setups
With an LN, you have the benefit of often writing a story twice.
They knew what they were doing when they first introduced him as an unlikable ass
Philip's writing was on point btw, like Murama made that delusional monologue with a passion
100% agree
"Thats not psychopath behaviour, they're just evil(in a good way)" is the single funniest line i have ever heard.

It's very hard, but makes for a more coherent story
