One thing about the introduction to Zaheer is that those White Lotus guards were not trash. They were NEVER expecting him to have airbendering and nobody really knows how to fight an airbender since they've almost been extinct for 170 years, especially one as skilled as Zaheer already is. This season is amazing and I already know just might be your favorite of the entire of both ATLA and Korra.
I'd hesitate to call him skilled at this point. He's powerful, but his movements are too stiff, and there's a lot of waste in the actual results, a lot of gusting around instead of focused. Some of the latter part is probably just the nature of air as an element, but he's also just not very controlled at this point, he's had maybe a couple weeks of practice, more likely just a few days, and he's spent years studying the philosophy, but there's only so much you can do to apply it without bending, even with martial arts, you can't always tell where you're going wrong.

The main point here is that Zaheer is nasty enough of a fighter to where he could likely have taken those guards regardless he just lacked any opportunity to get the drop on them. Also, airbending is the most spiritual of all the elements, so the fact that Zaheer has been studying airbending philosophy for a long time probably gives him some kind of automatic power boost

In the comics, you see the beginnings of the Air Acolytes. They adopted everything about Air Nomad culture and even became “master” airbenders by mastering the forms and movements, just without the actual power to bend. So someone like Zaheer would just need to add the bending to forms he already knows. Although his style is much more aggressive and offensive than most airbending.
My favorite thing that you picked up on is that this man was already nasty enough to be locked up that tight without bending. Now that he has bending you can only imagine how crazy he is now.
This season is breathtaking and mind blowing. Also, Zaheer was a master Martial Artist and used those moves with airbending, which is why he seems so good.

I always think that they had Zaheer in that prison before he got bending, when he was a NON BENDER he was in that prison with those guards. That’s how nasty he was, now that he’s a villain that got airbending, an element people aren’t use to being against, that idea blew my mind and automatically got me invested.
I always heard people question why the earth bender guard wouldn't just open up the prison. But if you notice the jail cell is platinum including the bars. Which is why they need a key to open it. Probably so some metal bender doesn't come rescue him.
look zaheer is amazing for so many reasons but i love that the writers really COMMITTED to having an airbender villain. like it could've been some random dude who suddenly gained power but from the very first time he speaks you can tell zaheer really has an airbender-philosophy-taken-too-far thing going on
So exciting! I really do love book three so much, and you can tell from the jump that Zaheer is going to be an incredible villain. And I think Korra's character development really starts to shine. I love the scene where she saves the man on the bridge, trying hard to connect to him and calm him down with kindness and the way she's grappling with how her choices have such huge consequences.
I got the notification and couldn’t watch right away so I was hyped all day and it did not disappoint. Great reaction! Made me feel like I was watching the show for the first time all over again.
one thing about Zaheer wiping the floor with the white lotus, is not only was it unexpected but similar to ATLA people are not used to fighting Airbenders, there's so few that airbenders kind of have an intrinsic advantage over other people who are unfamiliar with how to counter them, but on top that it's important to consider that if Zaheer is an airbender now that means he was a non-bender before and they STILL had him in this crazy maximum security prison, so before, even without bending, he was a very legitimate threat.
For this season and the fourth one, the production team knew they were getting both seasons, so the plotting and the characters are tighter and more cohesive compared to the first two, where they weren't sure if the series would continue or not. I'm glad you liked the first episode so much. I hope you enjoy the rest of the episodes just as much.
Love Zaheer. It's so interesting how each villain of the Korra show after Amon represented the dark side of the different cultures, like Unalaq's (water) connection to the spirits, Zaheer's (air) zen-like wisdom, and Kuvira's (earth) strength.
Lil behind the scenes info. When they were making seasons 1 and 2 they never knew if they were getting another season, so they couldn't leave any loose threads or do any set-up. They didn't even have the ATLA animators until the Wan stuff. This is the only season where they knew they were getting another one after.

I don't think Korra was thinking any of the previous avatars had dealt with this specific problem before, just that they might have good advice for dealing with spirits in general that might be applicable. Even without the two worlds being directly connected, they could definitely interact before, and spirits had absolutely come through causing problems before. Heck, if problems like this hadn't been dealt with before, why would there be a whole socialized form of waterbending for handling spirits? I love your reaction to Zaheer.
I watched this show so many time especially this season. Zaheer was a NON-bender who had to be locked up in a metal cage middle of the mauntains with only a metal bridge to get there guarded by white lotus... like he was that big of a threat before he got the airbending ... and now he's got airbending damn...
I don't know how anyone can hold on to hate for Mako but not also Korra at the same time. His only actual mistakes were lying to her after she lost her memories and being part of a love triangle. Korra was the one who followed Pema's bad advice and tried to steal him away when he was already in a relationship in the first place, vented all her frustrations on him that he had nothing to do with, and forced him to choose between his job and her, throwing a tantrum and destroying his workspace. The only one that didn't do anything wrong was Asami.
Mako treats Asami and Korra like crap the entire first two seasons. He treats Korra like crap when they first meet, rejects her when Korra shows interest, gets with Asami, ignores Asami their entire relationship for Korra, gets with Korra then dumps her, gets back Asami then ignores her again for Korra after not telling her about them breaking up. It doesn't help that when he retells the events in season 4 he tries to make it sounds like he wasn't trash. And he's just a boring ass character overall.

Korra kept fawning over him and when he turned her down, she rebounded with Bolin. Of course he's going to think she's just messing with them with that quick turnaround. He wasn't ignoring Asami, he was perfectly happy with her until Korra followed Pema's horrible advice and tried to steal him away. Then when he made his decision to be with her, all she ever did was yell at him and turn everything into a "me vs the world" situation. His only real mistake was not telling the truth when she lost her memories. Like I said, Asami is the only one that didn't do anything wrong in this love triangle.
zaheer has good reason to be as good as he is, seemingly instantly! its kind of indirectly addressed in a small way later but dont worry, it will make sense! im sure the comments will help you out when that moment comes ☺️

Zaheer is my all time FAVORITE villain in Avatar. You are in for a treat.
Zaheer was locked away for YEARS with nothing but his thoughts. Airbending is all about spirituality and that’s all he had in his isolation: his spirit. Keeping him in prison was the worst thing they could have done to him because it made him the most powerful Airbender in history.
