For me personally my transition to death metal was just a need for something faster and heavier than thrash metal. My transition into black metal was purely based off of death metal boring me to death. Of course before I discovered black metal, I considered all extreme metal death metal, then I bought Darkthrone - Transylvanian Hunger, and Emperor - Nightside Eclipse, just based on the CD's looked different, yet extreme. I like where I started my journey into black metal, honestly.

I was originally a hip-hop head and just decided one day that I wanted to get into Iron Maiden (their album covers and long discography was alluring) and from there I started checking out thrash bands like Metallica, Megadeth etc.
For a long time that was all I listened to until I discovered Beneath The Remains by Sepultura from a recommendation and from the first song it just clicked for me like a "oh I get it" moment and from that point on I fell deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole.
I think the same could be done for any genre it just requires those building blocks like you mentioned. If I could recommend one rap album to check out it would be Lil Ugly Mane - Oblivion Access. It's eerie, dark and experimental as fuck.

Also if you like extreme/underground music, listen to Aesop Rock for hiphop. I think he holds the record for utilizing the most words from the english language and he tends to be on the darker side. Skelethon is a good album but any of his stuff is dope.

first death metal i liked was carcass' song heartwork off same album. i also started liking death thrash like exmortus. then it was death, listening and loving all of deaths albums. My entry in full on death metal was weirdly cattle decapatation, travis ryans' melodic high screams caught my ear and eventully i liked his growls too, and now i love all death metal and grindcore.
for black metal it was the atmosphere of burzum's filfosem that i adored from the start, and from thereit was mayhem, darkthrone, the rest of burzum etc. also nice 7:50

I can usually find something that I like in any genre of music...be-bop to black metal...even old school hip hop. Public Enemy is actually pretty heavy but mumble mouth rap is 100% junk.
Just one thing to point out though.
I think the term you’re looking for is staccato picking.
My Bloody Valentine/Kevin Shields developed tremolo picking.
Still interesting but very different and nowhere near as urgent.

Exactly, very well explained! But you definitely don't have to grow up with it.. I grew up with the usual pop stuff and only got into metal around 15/16. Back then I started with power/symphonic metal and just clean vocals. When I first listened to CoB, I didn't really like it and thought they're too extreme, haha. Somehow I was fascinated by the heavier stuff though and kept on listening, "training" my ears. ;) Nowadays I can appreciate the beautiful melodies in Black Metal. :'D

You don't have to grow up with it, but if you grow up with a type of music, that music is easier to get into.

Music taste is acquired in a progressive way? Interesting, my music taste progression wasn't as linear as you described, but I must admit it is a nice way to introduce extreme genera.

I grew up with folk, rock, and country. Got into metal, and still love country-western. Listening to Johnny Cash and Marduk in the same hour is an . . . interesting experience when you like both. The lighter and darker sides of your personality sorta fence each other in your chest. Its weird.

I think an alternative for using Slayer as a catalyst is early Kreator. Pretty much Extreme Aggression and everything before then. Pleasure To Kill is pretty much the ideal door opening into both death metal and black metal.

Black Metal is really spotty. It has to have something unique about it like a concept album or cool instrumentation, non-traditional instrumentation (like Ihsahn using a Saxophone for example).
I'm not too surprised you're not into Obscura, but I can't recall what your take is on a lot of the other modern technical death metal bands. Spawn of Possession or Necrophagist for example. There's a lot of them I enjoy, but maybe Tech/Death doesn't work all that much for you? Why they work for me is largely due to the instrumentation. The playing is crazy, obviously per the name. Why Tech/Death really is an offshoot of progressive metal, which when done well, is probably my favorite kind of Metal.

    • @DownFallNetWork

Obscura is different, Obscura is a mess in every way even from a technical standpoint its bad because its all sloppy, random, and super off time

I just heard the riff on children of bodoms downfall and was instantly hooked. Never lnew that shit even existed. I listened to rnb and rap and pop up until that point. Then i got into dimmu borgie and cradle of filth and cob, then maiden, metallica etc then thrash, then death, then black metal

its funny i got into metal backwards (except for sabbath my dad always jammed them growing up and ive always loved them) but as a kid i was really into slipknot and the whole nu metal thing that was popular then, later in life i got really into hardcore punk which lead me to look for all sorts more extreme music and i found obituary and death and got into death metal. always thought metal was corny because id only ever been exposed to mainstream metalica and iron maiden and whatnot. in my mind hardcore punk was way more aggressive and intense and heavy metal was for neck beards. but ever since getting into death metal ive snowballed backwards in time and have come to appreciate classic thrash and heavy metal, doom and even some power metal, and the appreciation for horrible production and stripped down songs was already there so black metal was a shoe in. still consider myself a bit of a metal noob but i just thought it was funny how it was probably the opposite progression that got them into death and black metal and such. love the channel thanks for the vids

Deathmetal has been way more popular than black metal forever, cannibal corpse in ace ventura, black metal is far more niche than death metal, the whole reason black metal got to where it was was because a certain communist thought Death metal was "Too popular" so you're just factually wrong

Liking music genres isnt a conscious choice that you force yourself to like. So going through building blocks is pointless.

What he’s saying is that unconsciously people go from liking one thing to another. The taste develops unconsciously but often it comes in phases or “building blocks”

@@beatleswithaz6246 Yeah most people dont start off liking extreme death metal. But they will later on because they have built up to enjoying it.
