One of my favorite ways to practice editing is to create trailers for movies that don't exist. In today's video, we're going to make a movie trailer using only stock footage and other assets from today's sponsor, Artlist Max.

🔥🔥THANKS FOR WATCHING! Check out How to Make a Video Editing Portfolio With ZERO CLIENTS here: th-cam.com/video/YDzuK2GV0Ic/w-d-xo.html
I dowloaded some clips but they have the word artlist on them , do you know how i would take those off
Thank you so much for this. I haven't practiced my editing in way too long and didn't know where to begin but making trailers is a great idea!
Love the SUPER creepy trailer! And this is a great idea for practice! A lot faster than animating all the parts, sigh. And, if what a person comes up with is good, it can be part of a portfolio reel.
Exactly!
Loved the trailer! Thank you for giving us an idea. Much love, from the Philippines.
What a great idea. I've just started getting into video editing with LumaFusion, and the biggest challenge has been that I just don't have much footage to edit! It's winter where I am, and I just don't want to trudge around out in the cold and snow shooting random clips. Plus, I don't yet have the eye or the skill to shoot good useable footage that is all going to work together. I'll get better at shooting footage with practice, sure, but in the meantime I need to practice my editing.
I do get annoyed at one thing with stock footage, though, and that is that they are often already slow-motion, with pans and zooms...stuff *I* wanted to practice adding in the editing process! Grr. Oh well.
Jay, awesome trailer! I've been looking for a way to practice my skills and your video was the answer. Thank you.
Glad I could help!
That gave me goosebumps.. awesome
Thanks Jay!
Everything is nice, but price for ARTLIST is 60$... It's too much just for practice video editing...can I get some free site for stock videos?
There is a better one called mixkit for totally free
This was half a year ago so I assume you found something, but Pexels and Videezy are great free resources for editing practice/stock footage in general. I'm searching right now myself and realized so many videos are people just shilling Artlist or other expensive sites.
Pixabay, videvo, pexels, mixkit, freepik
Just the video i needed
My man Jay! Keep ‘em coming buddy!
Thanks man!
Such a useful drills👌🏼
the video is almost just an advertisement for the artlist, I mean it's kind of a help, but most of the editor won't pay artlist just to practice, why didn't you make a video that uses free stock footage, or even film yourself to show those who are just starting out on the editing journey that you can practice without spending money, after all the editor who is already working probably already knows about artlist and how good it's, but not every beginner, you could use something for free and for music it could be from the subscription since it is best known because of this, and then say that you could use something free too, but it wouldn't have the same quality or impact
Thank u man
Great idea to improve your post production skills while having some fun. Thanks.
No problem!
Great idea for skill building - sounds like a community opportunity; Faux Movie Trailer Challenge! Even when you're showing something like this, I still pick up great tips and terms - didn't know about the "driving sound" as a term before 😀
Thanks Ken! The driving sound thing is something I actually picked up from Film Riot. Opened my mind up to a whole new level lol
Thank you so much ; )
Nicely done!
Thank you!
Excellent trailer, I have done this with stock footage as well for a series of mini horror movies.
Nice! And thank you!
nice!!
"some generally creepy video clips" proceeds to open a video of a guy in a goat mask
I love ur vids tho
Hey Jay. My favorite way to learn more about editing is to shoot the family videos and then try to make something of them.
Nice! I have a ton of family stuff filmed that’s just sitting there waiting to be edited lol.
It was cool seeing you on the Nvidia website! Congrats 🎉
Thank you!
I second that! Merry Christmas, Jay to you and your family!
that was good,
Nice trailer :)
Thanks!
I am a beginner in video editing, and I love using capcut for my video editing skill.
Are there any more apps I can try?
Ha Ha that was cool...I need to try doing this at some point.
Go for it!
Hi, very inspiring video! Could I ask how long it took you to make this trailer, including finding the media? Thanks!
Probably about 45 minutes to find all of the media (not including my daughter’s voiceover. That took about 15 minutes). Editing took about 4 hours. The first hour was spent on the rough cut, then the rest was tightening it up, mixing the audio, etc.
OMG!!! I do the exact same thing when practicing. Glad I'm not the only one who creates fake movie trailers.
Lol nope! You’re in good company!
Hi! New to Davinci Resolve here. I do comic book videos and often pan and scan down or across specific comic book panels. In other software I'm typically able to select a 16x9 aspect ratio for a 9x16 comic page but I can't figure out how to change the size of the green and red boxes to that 16x9 aspect ratio in Resolve. Any tips?
If you’re talking about the Dynamic Zoom tool, you can just click and drag on the edges of the boxes to change the size. If you’re talking about flipping the aspect ratio of the actual boxes in dynamic zoom, I don’t think you can. But you can always just key frame the zoom and position in the inspector instead of using dynamic zoom.
BRAVO
Thank you!
I created a fun little trailer about ants
Thats a fantastic idea for creating portfolio pieces or practising. Artlist is on the pricey side for someone just starting out. Does anyone have any cheaper alternatives?
Pexels has free stock footage, but the thing that makes Artlist so good is it’s all story-driven so it’s easy to find related clips.
Anybody know the sound effect used around 6:20?
can you give me that audio behind that trailor
Im trying to use this but the clips i dowloaded say artlist on them, do you know how to take that off?
By paying for an Artlist subscription
When you said "at this point" I thought you were gonna say need help hahah
Hey Jay - not sure what's happening but youTube doesn't seem to show a checkmark on your new videos. The last 4 or 5, I just happened to check your channel and saw that you had new posts. But the little dot that gets put on my list of subscribers, doesn't seem to be happening lately. Don't know why, just thought I'd let you know.
That’s weird. Not sure what that’s about. I’ll double check my settings to make sure I’m notifying subscribers next time I upload. Thanks for the heads up!
That orange-ish and blue colors looks weirds
I do the same thing but I make music videos. :)
I’ve done that too! I actually did one in my “Build a Portfolio” video.
Are the videos copy right free?
You are paying for a license to use them
Main Problem is that Artlist provide in regular poor quality. Special in sound but also when it comes to Colorgrading.
Artlists audio and sound effects come in uncompressed wav, and you can get RAW and LOG versions of their footage, plus they give you all of the camera information, which is actually really good for color grading. Not sure why you think it’s so bad.
it's actually scary
Hahaha awesome
my guy forgot Adobe PremierPro exists lol
LOL Evryone can do with premium stock websites, praticing with free stock footages is difficult.....
I hate the growth of the stock footage industry. It symbolises much that is wrong in today's world. One should get off one's arse & take one's own footage no matter how good or bad it is. Tell your own story & learn along the way. No disrespect intended. Thank you for your posts 👍
I agree with you to an extent. I don’t think, in general that people should rely on Stock footage as the main body of their content. But it’s very useful for editors who don’t work with cameras and need a shot to complete a project, especially if they’re on a tight schedule, or they don’t have resources to get the shot they need. Even Hollywood films use stock footage from time to time.
That makes no sense. Not everyone training to be an editor is also working on becoming a videographer. Just to practice editing, someone would have to invest in equipment, get people together to shoot something if you want to edit anything other than nature and buildings, etc?
