i got a freelance editing job from a back when i was starting out, the boss of the company was really kind enough to show on how he edits his video from there i realized the importance of memorizing short cut keys by heart, for that alone i will be forever thankful. in school these types of things are thought at very minimal having to learn shortcuts saves me hours from editing.
1- Understand the story
2- Organization skills
3- Be tasteful with transitions
4- Pacing and the flow of the video
5- Know how to use other programs "Knowledge is power"
6- deliver on time or earlier
7- know software short cuts, use short cuts and save time

I've been trying to hire a freelance editor for the random gigs I get every once in a while.
I've seen my work edited by others a few times (and these people work for the production company I've worked with) and I just cringed at how bad it was edited.
It's not just about cutting clips together. It's an art form.
Know WHEN to cut shots and when to leave it.
Stop doing jump cuts.
Speed ramping and those dumb transitions/fades bug me so much. Its all a gimmick to make your editing 'look' better, but it rarely enhances the story.
What I also find is that many 'editors' also do colour correction/grading. They often end up ruining the look.
And know how to export in full quality!!!!
Have a reel of your work. We need to SEE your work. Ive had many apply for different jobs with no samples of work. Not everyone cares about your resume or bio.

Hey I’m thinking about becoming an editor, and I have a quick question. When you find people to edit, do you (or maybe other clients) look for bachelors degrees (like media and communications) or certificates? Or does that not matter compared to the skills edits show on a portfolio?

Wholeheartly agree with you Chris. Hiring is so hard, so-called editors that didn't spend time to master even one of the columns you mentioned. And good ones ask for high salary. But this would set everything out straight
this is one of the best NAB videos that has aesthetics to it like it was shot in a studio! you have the skills to completely use the environment and i learned a lot how to work out where you are in visuals(though this video isnt about this topic). I always feel like i owe you some money!

As an unemployed editor ( work multiple other jobs but not as a video editor) hearing these tips really makes me happy to know that I’m still on the right track. I think the thing that is holding me back is the lack of real world experience as a video editor.

Great tips Chris. I’m an editor too and you really nailed it on the head. Too many people think editing is about software and cool transitions but don’t realize the key differentiators for an editor is in the non-technical stuff like storytelling, pacing, organization skills, time management

On the topic of short cuts...Premiere lets you customize them. Good idea to remap the ones you use most to where it's most comfortable for you and speed up your workflow.

I am agreeing with most of them but ! Deliver on time is easy to say, I am working for a project management Saas and sometimes when the clients is unrealistic on the timeline sometimes is better to drop it instead of pushing your staff to finish on time and doing bad job and loose this client. At least you are bringing a better value to your work by delivering a better quality project. Otherwise great stuff as usual 👌
