The idea of nothing is lost, but returned is actually quite good. We were all born in this world without anything so you really can't lose anything. And when you die, you are returned also, since you haven't always been alive. Everything just returns to its previous state of not being what it currently is.

You shouldn’t be following or listening to stoic philosophy. I don’t know if those are stoic words. Maybe this is exactly where he should be, if he acts like that. Either way you shouldnt let him take your peace of mind. Plus, if I’ve been listening to this correctly. Pride seems to be frowned upon in favor of humility. So, a potential holier then though attitude probably isn’t stoic. Who knows.
Though I find stoicism full of good ideas. Idk if I agree with every thing though. Indeed humility is an admirable trait. Too much humility can lead to self deprecating, or miss opportunities. Having a little pride or a positive sense of self worth isn’t a bad thing. But, I tend to understand and agree why some philosophies tend to speak against pride as if you give into it too much it clouds ones vision , and mind. Leading to a sense of arrogance or jadedness.
I tend to kind of agree with the statement. I don’t think it’s stoicism but, I like it. “There is nothing noble in being better than your fellow man. True nobility is being superior to your former self. “ I believe Ernest Hemming way said that. Then again it makes sense. After all you are your worst enemy. So, striving to be a better , or stronger person than who you were yesterday, seems like a very virtuous goal. And maybe lays the ground work for building character.
Then again part of stoicism is listening more to oneself and less to the criticisms of others. But, not do you can look upon them from a higher place but because they don’t deserve to have you peace of mind when they want.

And the irony of that is, when you focus off of other people and trying to find someone, and begin to focus on, and improve yourself for the sake of yourself, often a great and worthy person will appear. The energy you give off when you are calm and self-focused is not desperate or anxious, but calm and and happy, and the kinds of people you'd want a good relationship with (a partner who is calm and focused and happy), will see that in you and pick up on it. This is just something I've seen happen to people I know personally, time and time and time again.

    • @resident_alien595

  • @prashantmishra5691
    @prashantmishra5691 5 ปีที่แล้ว +127

Very well explained. This generation is all about heating the sheets and forgetting the face. I can't deny my desire to be with not just one but many women as possible. But my morals and my virtues does not allow me to do such as it is just an impulse of the moment; which when carefully waited and thought, results into something I would not like later on. Only the contemplation about such action makes me resentful. Hence to conclude that same carnal desire for more than one woman does not lead to happiness but to desolation and emptiness. We are emotional beings hence we must strive for emotional connection with another human being so that with good friendship and hence with further intimacy we can give birth to love.
Love is the ultimate joy but lust is ephemeral.
Love is eternal but lust is transient.
And regarding the other pursuits of life, I say there are so much more before we think of dating and finding partner for ourselves.
Maybe we are yet to grow up before we can understand another human being.

A practical way to look at lust would be to regard it as the "carrot" that motivates us to better our lives.
Take the example of approaching a person you found attractive. No social media, no tinder, no social circles. Just face to face.
Imagine the skills needed to help ensure a successful venture. Skills ranging from social and emotional intelligence to logistical planning. Even an understanding of stoic philosophy could be required to help one through the rigors of constant failure and rejection.
All of those skills are easily applicable to other areas of one's life whether it's the professional world, improving physical health, or gaining a sense of self-sufficiency.
IMO, by giving lust a PURPOSE, it gives us humans a way to reconcile our inherent animalistic desires with our modern attitudes...all the while getting closer to being in touch with what we each want out of life.
And I don't think that aiming for "a bit fun beneath the sheets" denigrates us as people, if anything it lifts us up and gives us an opportunity to find strength from being willingly vulnerable with another human.
To summarize my point in a phrase one could say to themselves after their first successful sexual conquest:
"If I could convince someone to get into bed with me, who knows *what else* is possible for me"

    • @xyzv8640

      @lightdweller1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

That’s a good subjective validation of lust; if you can reconcile to that and it propels you in other areas of your life; who’s to say it’s wrong.
The only issue is the low standard that you set yourself in your summary, is actually paradoxical. These days it’s more difficult to find a girl that won’t get into bed with a guy. And if she’s a woman with standards, it’s because she likes you and sees potential in you, she will make you wait, at least beyond the first date.

    • @-A-c
      @-A-c 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@lightdweller1 "The only issue is the low standard that you set yourself in your summary, is actually paradoxical. These days it's more difficult to find a girl that won't get into bed with a guy"
      You're not wrong.
And anectdotally, with the females I approach it appears that trend seems to be heading that way. Internally, I rejoice when I run into a 'woman with standards' for it forces me to 'raise my game' so to speak.
However, as time passed...i'm finding that the difficulty of the girl doesn't really matter.
Sure, the girl may be generally easier to sleep with, but I the male am the one who must get out of the house, assess/create the circumstances needed to successfully initiate first contact with the female, and then take the initiative of finding out if that's true. A degree of motivating myself is required for any of these actions to take place at all.
In essence I found I was not really seducing the girl, I was seducing myself......into being the best version of me. I simply cannot be anything but that when presenting myself to a girl I want.
      Other observations:
The vast majority of females I meet appear to guard their honest feelings. Essentially maintaining a 'mask' of what they think other people expect them to behave...especially when dealing with a male pursuing them.
Up until the point I take them to bed for the first time, that is.
After that, it was like she could relax for once and share her unfiltered view on anything we talked about. As long as I maintained my own integrity and honesty in the situation, she respected me as a man...even as we eventually broke things off because of conflicting logistical problems, life getting in the way, etc.
Perhaps there is a virtuous way to approach lust after all?
      P.S
Thank you for this reply. Admittedly, I was at first offended by it. But i'm glad I instead took the time to properly internalize those words to the point where it has raised my level of thinking.

      I asked myself:
Who in my life loves me unconditionally and completely, with absolutely zero judgement towards me, who holds no secrets, who would never question me? Who in my life would go with me anywhere, at any time, and untiringly stay by my side forever, until I or they die? Who in my life would ferociously protect me with their life, no matter what danger presents itself, or die selflessly for me without a second thought?

It's not that I've never felt loneliness but after years of self-assessment I've come to realise that that's not all that there is to life...love shouldn't be the one & only pursuit of life or a reason for you to become better. Great video ❤

Emotional support and affection are deep set human needs. Our culture has a history of pretending that men should have no such needs. Since most philosophers have been men, there is a void of philosophic discourse on these. The true romantic love is an agreement to give these to each other and no one else because giving these to someone else would neglect the partners emotional need to feel special in your eyes. These are not logical. These are human.

I am 23 years old and have been single my whole life. I guess part of the reason why is because I was afraid to start a relationship with someone because I know the odds of it outlasting time is extremely low especially for relationships at my age. And I suppose I am just not ready to face the emotional baggage of a breakup; knowing myself, I am a pretty sentimental person and a break up would destroy me. But now I am starting to think that maybe I've waited too long and having at least one relationship earlier in my life would have been good for me cuz I would have gained at least some kind of experience. But now that's it's 2020 and the entire world is under quarantine, even the option of getting into a relationship isn't even practical or possible at the moment (at least not where I live) and I probably won't have a romantic relationship until this covid shit is over, so I am pretty much screwed for god knows how long. I don't even have the opportunity to give romance a shot anymore. Anyone else in the same boat?

Sex is something incredible sacred, people always diminish sex giving it less important of what it really has.
The union of 2 bodys is something very powerful.
All things aren't really bad, what we things as bad is went something get out of balance.
Jealousy for example is not wrong unless it's out of balance, when it's balance it's known as admiration.
Pride when it's balance is known as self admiration, greed when it's balance is your desire for betterment.
Love, lust an pleasure is the same, if you tagged them as bad, it means that you are not seeing the entire picture.

How funny. Some time ago I stumbled upon an article which stated that stoicism was actually closer to edonism when it comes to love and lust. I guess you can use stoicism to put marriage and traditional values forward, but it's a shame you're not talking about the other side of the medal. Stoicism is about being truthful towards your feelings and rationalizing your place on the earth. In my opinion stoicism puts honest relations forward but that doesn't mean marriage is the way to go. It's about how honest you are with the other person and with yourself. Marriage can be a way, but it doesn't have to.

  • @slidestudios

Lust is a bad thing, Emanuel Swedenborg made a good point in Love in Marriage, that true married love is spiritual and therefore bodily and not bodily and therefore spiritual. True love is sacrificing your self interest for others and loving the goodness in others that God placed in them that truly define who they are. But lust is wrapped in the word love so much that this concept has become confused.

    • @slidestudios

goldenhotdogs I see your point, it's very reasonable, but there is an aspect of it that I believe you don't understand, and that is that we are more happy when we help others, we are closer to God when we better love his children, and when we are closer to God we are happier because we are more complete and better understand who we truly are as children of God.
When I mentioned true love, I didn't mean that you should tirelessly sacrifice your interests for someone who doesn't care about you at all, you can't be married to someone who doesn't love you, becaue marriage isn't a government, social, or religious contract, it's a union of a man and a woman in a deep way. They become one flesh, they become bonded with one another out of a true love, they mutually love one another and are willing to sacrifice their own selfish interests for the other because they both love each other. The husband's interest becomes the wife's interest and vice versa because they are together. A marriage is not a marriage unless it is based in equlity, a marriage cannot be slavery because it would not be a marriage. Though people are deceived as to what marriage is and may falsely call it marriage.

Im a Christian as well and I have the same view. I’m sure you’ve heard of one of the most popular phrases in stoicism, Amor Fati, meaning to love your fate. I interpret Amor fati as leaving my life up to Gods will. I feel like stoicism in general can easily be interpreted as leaving everything up to God from a Christian perspective because stoicism simply implies we don’t have control over everything.

For example wrath would be a sin if you were to go by impulse, but if it was a controlled calm action against enemies then it isn't a sin. ( of course after you decide if it's wise to use violence)
So I guess it's that lust isn't exactly evil... it's just when you're controlled by it, it becomes a "sin".

Actually what is in mind and spirit, it is ALREADY sin, and what is in mind and spirit WILL:
      - Leak and cause yourself trouble -- honestly, sometimes something subtle like that can have exponentially greater damage as people consider it the proverbial tip of the iceberg; or,
      - Even merely causing you to miss out on better results, as you're energies are consumed on restraint and controlling yourself, excessive caution or seeming inhibition, instead of giving yourself to mutually productive results; or,
      - in the extreme case, the fruit of it might gush out in action.
Major psychologists even direct apostles of Freud, such as Karen Horney have written extensively on it; and in divinity Jesus mentioned it too.
Also, violence should never be an option except in the form of equal force in the process of defending yourself from a violent attack.

I’ve started learning about the stoic philosophy. But, idk how much I agree with yet. But, Marcus Arelius and Epitetitus (I butchered that) wrote down some things that make a lot of sense.
Though I’ll never stop perusing love. I know what I want. Not a fleeting emotion. Like romantic love but, true companionship. Even as I lean more Athiest. I’ll admit that people who manage to endure this world and not be separated by it have my admiration. I find monogamy more admirable than polygamy. And commitment to be a good character trait.
Though while I’ll always consider cheating to be a little evil. In my opinion. This philosophy probably helps to better help it when it does happen. Though I’d prefer to avoid the outcome. I’m not a full stoic. I’m not adopting this as a new religion but. There’s some good points made in this philosophy. But, I do have my own mind and I like to think for myself as well. The Marcus’ words are very appreciated.
Even if we did raid the mans personal journal going against his wishes. It was supposed to be buried with him.

It caught my attention that many footage from various vids of yours seem to be shot in Indonesia. Do you happen to work/live there?

As much as this world makes it seem sex isnt everything nor is the need to have someone. The goal of life, is just to live. Just exist. Once you do that you can pursue any purpose peacefully
