- The Rheinmetall MG-3 is one of the most successful machine guns in the world today, and remains in production and widespread service more than 60 years after it was first adopted.
There is little to be said of the MG-3's design or development, as it is essentially just an improved MG-42 re-chambered for 7.62x51 mm NATO round. The MG-42 had been the most innovative machine gun of World War 2, arguably the most successful, and it was one of the most feared weapons in the arsenal of the Axis; for its blistering rate of fire, US troops knew the MG-42 as "Hitler's Buzzsaw", the Russians called it "The Linoleum Ripper", and German troops called it "Hitler's Bone Saw". It had twice the rate of fire of most other machine guns in use at the time, but was still easily controllable, and boasted the first quick-change barrel ever seen on a battlefield. The consensus of historians is that the MG-42 was the best machine gun of World War 2, and there are more than a few of these authorities who still consider it to be the best ever made. After the war, nearly every army in the world wanted surplus MG-42s, or other weapons with many of the same qualities, and it inspired the development of the MAG 58, the PK, the M60, the AAT-52, and countless others.
When the decision was made for West Germany to re-arm in the 1950s, they re-introduced the MG-42. NATO allowed this as an interim measure, but required West Germany to adopt the 7.62x51 mm NATO cartridge as their standard rifle round. Rather than importing a completely new weapon, or developing one from scratch, West Germany simply put the MG-42 back into production in the new 7.62 mm NATO chambering. The resulting weapon went into service in 1958 as the MG-1, which was further reinforced by the MG-2 (MG-42s built in World War 2, that were factory-rebuilt to fire 7.62 mm NATO).

German army MG 3 Gunner here, from 2006-2010!
Loved it! No complaints except the safety issues that you mentioned. Thing makes the Taliban poop themselves.
Though it must be said that the dangers of an open bolt system are excessively drilled into the gunners skulls at training. The biggest concern being some idiot managing an out of battery detonation right in his face with the top cover open. It has happened and there is a video of it on youtube.
Also, one fun open-bolt story: During training, I experienced a malfunction that happened every now and then with training blanks (but which I fortunately never encountered with live ammo). Due to the different shape of the training rounds with their blunter nose, the round sometimes doesn't feed properly and gets wedged in between the bolt and the barrel.
Me, wanting a good result on the exercise and being stupid and 18 (two things that essentially mean the same thing in the German language) didn't ask for the nifty maintenance tool from my secondary gunner, which they carry around together with the extra barrel, the asbestos glove, and a reserve bolt. Instead I just stuck my hand in the thing from below through the case ejection port and yanked the wedged round out. I DID clear the malfunction, but forgot that the bolt isn't currently locked in the rear position. You see where this is going...bolt smashed home on my fingers, smashing the fingernail of my left thumb into a mess of blood and its bitsy fingernail splinters. I cried like a bitch, but finished the exercise. Very unpleasant, but deffo user stupidity issue and not the fault of the gun. 600g Bolt powered by one recoil spring thiccer than a bavarian milk maid stops for nothing.
Oh, also forgot, about that recoil spring. In disassembly it is tensioned and works directly against the buttstock when you unlock it, so you have to work against the spring pressure when taking it of. One guy in our sister platoon didn't, and had a few teeth smashed out when the buttstock came flying into his face during improper disassembly. Heh.
Another few little annotations:
The barrel can be and is switched without the help of the asbestos glove for extra speed, if the new barrel is cool enough to touch (which drill says it should be anyway in order to be put in). You don't need to actually touch the hot barrel when expelling it from the weapon. However, you then have a barrel that is DUMMY hot lying in the dirt a few inches from you. So care is recommended.
Secondly, at least in my unit (Paratroopers) MGs were equipped with all kinds of ninjafications, like a side grip and a top rail, and before leaving for Afghanistan for the first time we got issued non-magnifying red dot optics. I found those a might speedier and more pleasant to use than the iron sights.

@@keirbrown7734 according to Wikipedia, the Nato 7.62 has around 3500 J of energy, while the 7,92 had between 3600 and 4100 J. It also flies a little faster. So while there is a difference, i doubt it makes much of a difference for the guy being hit.

Having fired both the Browning M2 and the MG3 I can easily say that the MG3 is the most fun, even though the calibre is smaller and it's not as loud as the M2. The high rate of fire and amazing accuracy is just insane

I used the Mg42 in the Danish army. Many called it the sniper mg since the first 2-3 bullets hit exactly where you wanted them. It is indeed an amazing mg.

@@Matthew-Anthony The first few bullets hits their mark like dead center and the following are a few centimeters apart. You only fire short bursts anyway, so the accuracy of this mg is insane. Fire short bursts with your rifle, and you wont hit a thing.

It is about having a higher than average amount of projectiles hitting a target in .1 second, to be more dramatic than '2-4', which implied the brief time difference between the two given the ROF.

Funfact: The first thing german soldiers to if they arrive in a combat area (Kunduz, Mail) is to remove the limiter of everything (tanks, apcs etc) and especialy that on the MG3, so it has the full fire rate again.

("the old of an MG42") or a breech block version from an license build MG3 that is lighter and therefore faster. This would be a very dubious messure they would not do. 1200 rounds per minute is impressive enough to saw an ISIS terrorist

The MG42 shot fast. I don't think I've ever heard one shooting. I used to listen to the M-60s hammering away in the next valley. It was difficult enough to keep the M-60s fed, it must have been a beast to feed those MG42s. I told my troops to put their M-16s on SEMI.
Been using this in the danish army for years and years! Absolutely amazing mg. Amazing they could make something that lasted and functioned this well as this did! So many memories listening to it :)
I think I fired an MG-3, or its precursor, when I was with the 2/15th infantry in Wildflecken, Germany in 1977. They grabbed a couple of us privates and sent us to the German firing range. When I squeezed the trigger I was surprised how many rounds went down range. Also, it didn't jump around as much when it fired. Talk about German engineering.

The phrase should have indicates a missed obligation or opportunity in the past. In informal speech, it is contracted to should’ve, not "should of."
The less jumping around would be due to the low weight of the bolt and the high firing rate. I have fired the MG74 which is basically the same thing but with a firing rate of around 750 rpm (heavier bolt and recoil spring) and it does shake the shooter quite a bit.
Ah the mg-3. side note: if your doing a hot barrel change on a frozen lake, grab it quick or you wont be getting back till you do your dive training in the spring!!

"hot barrel change" phff! there is no such thing, you fire, you keep up firing, when its glowing red hot and you release the trigger, it keeps firing, do not fear, it will run out of ammo at some point

The issue with barrels getting too hot is like more about losing accuracy, and if it gets even hotter, damaging the barrel or even parts of the gun. Setting it on fire maybe.
Termitreter this makes me wonder why the germans didn’t try to add a water cooled barrel to their fixed position machineguns, say on the normandy beaches for example. Seems like being able to continuously fire without having to stop for barrel changes would really make them more effective.

This thing is pretty accurate. With Bipod you could shoot single targets up to 1300m, with Tripod nearly 2000m.
Just dont pull the trigger to long, really short bursts will do the job.
Its a fantastic weapon.
Interesting sidenote:
Once I saw at some honour meeting (my army time is some long years ago), some veterans which fought in Russia. Really old guys. Two of them were back than a MG troop and they showed us how fast they can change the barell and rearm with belt. Yes, they were faster than us younger guys :)

Yes, its much louder and you hear the echo at least once or twice. That is deceptive in the videos. The same with the 120mm. If someone fires near you, it's like hitting you with the palm of hand on the chest.

We might not get paid much, but our company doesn't take the law too serious so we can work way longer than its legel.I'm a student so for me its good to earn some extra money fast, but they haven't got any other oppurtunity. Side note: Yugoslavia used the MG42, in 7.9x58mm, rather than the MG3. It is perhaps telling that they preferred this weapon when they could have acquired any MG in the world.

Me too mate. I disliked target practice in the army because of picking up every single casing from the ground and if our Staff was on the mood we picked up casings that other platoons had left behind.

I really loved this beast during my time as a soldier in the Bundeswehr. It was indeed more accurate than my Heckler & Koch G-3 at a longe range, even with the old iron sights.....
Yeah using 60 or so years old guns in modern day combat isnt always the best thing to do ... the Bundeswehr really is smart
@@_np7 if you want to make a patrol on Afghanistan then you need light guns and then ask to sent you heavy guns when 5.56 rifles can't hit the enemy. But if your main goal is to stop the Russians then you will understand why the MG3 and the G3 hold there ground.

Firing the MG 3 was one of the highlights of my life.
I was a MG shooter in the geman mechanized infantry. I shot up to 800 rounds in one hour during comat training. Only one barrel change is needed. 250 rounds... in combat you change the barrel when the steel starts to glow!
Funn fact: If you use the old MG42 "Verschluss" (don't know the english word) in this modern version, you can hear the fire rate go up while pulling the trigger. Sounds amazing.
I loved this MG while shooting it and on the Marder. Hated it during marches and field training. The weight is up to 15 kg (33 pound) with a ammunition crate attached. Getting realy heavy after a while...
The word you're looking for is "lock". Actually, the MG3 features a roller-locked bolt mechanism.
@@EricMustardman No, it isn't. The words he was looking for are "bolt" and "return spring". There is a "light" bolt (550 - 600 grams) and a heavy one (900 grams). The heavier bolt slows the cadence down significantly and is used with a stiffer spring.

Ah the MG-3. Of all the weapons I trained with and used during my ten years in the Bundeswehr, this was and still is my favorite. The sensation, when you tap that trigger and " brrrt-brrrt-brrrt" ten rounds down range in one and a half seconds. There just isn't anything quite like it.
As an American soldier in German (during the cold war) I had the great pleasure of shooting the MG3 for the German Schützenschnur in which I received the silver award.. I learned to shoot it one shot at a time..
So pretty and accurate on longer distances... a real beauty in all ways.

The German soldier was shooting in bursts since that is what he was thought in military school. The MG3 can't shoot for a long duration of time without the barrel overheating. While the M2 can do it more reliably.

Tried it first time in 1992. Love at first burst ❤ 🤩 Used in on and off for 21 years.
when I did my military service at the Bundeswehr I had no experience with weapons except playing Call of Duty. We learned how to handle the MG3 and shot on the shooting range. Not so impressive to me. BUT when I participated in a training night combat shooting with tracer ammunition I was astonished what the MG3 is capable of. We were like 10 shooters with rifles shooting on waves of cardboard enemies on an open field and the MG3 did the job almost alone! It was worth more than 10 of us shooting our little G36. LOL That thing is heavy as f#&k and a pain to carry but also a must have on a battlefield!

Try shooting a GE M61 at night, not only is it 3,000 RPM of solid tracers but also there's a 4 foot flame that comes out of the end of it and a 1 foot flame that comes out of the ejection port.
you guys are support rifle men for the machine gunner, I think it was the german ww2 doctrine.
That's actually what I was taught - in a 12-man squad, an MG has as much OR MORE firepower than the rest 11. That's why it's so important to have a really good machinegunner - he will allow you to properly manouver.

And yes I didn’t mean to say that Yugoslavia “uses” it. I meant to say used lol, I know it doesn’t exist. oh don't want to bitch more but i can confirm that both the mg42 and mg3 have two bipod mounts.
Best part of the MG42 weapon system was the Lafayette tripod. Very flexible, could be adjusted for height, fired with a periscope, and worked on uneven ground.
Doubled the range of the gun.
My father was in the bundeswehr in 1982 and I was at some point in charge of the munitions count while training. After a long day of constant shooting, a certain number of bullets must be expended, although in most cases there were a good amount left over. In these cases he and his higher ranked colleagues would collect all of them and send them down range. They once decided to feed an MG3 with only tracer rounds (for testing purposes of course). They held down the trigger till all the bullets were gone. No one cared about the maintenance of the gun so they shot nearly 500 rounds down range, only stopping to reload. Even until the barrel was glowing in a dark red. Must have been great because he always tells the story when talking about his time in the Bundeswehr. Even how he won an AUDI 80 in a game of cards.
Having served in the Bundeswehr in the early 90's, I had the opportunity to fire this beauty. Several thousand shots fired (we had cases of old ammunition about to spoil, so we got rid of it in an extended firing exercise instead of giving it to special waste disposal).
I found its precision to be remarkable -- I was able to reliably hit targets at 400-600 meters. (The sights go out to 1200m, but we didn't have targets set up at those distances -- I'd have loved to give *that* a try.) As you see in the video, it is quite possible (despite the rate of fire) to limit bursts to 3-4 shots each. Hearing the MG3 belch out such 3-4 round bursts in quick succession gives "suppressing fire" a whole new meaning. The sound is just mean, and certainly dissuades you from sticking your head up.
If you prep a belt with empty slots between the rounds, you can use the MG3 in single-fire mode (fire, yank on the belt, fire) as well. On the other end of the scale, it is possible to link those belts together, and an experienced loader can give you an effectively uninterrupted supply of ammo (no need to manually load the next belt). That, together with the really quick and simple barrel change, makes the MG3 your big friend on the battlefield.
The belts are instantly re-usable. We used a contraption with a funnel on top and a hand crank -- fill the funnel with ammo, put an empty belt in, and turn the crank to put rounds in the belt. An ammo truck at the back and a couple of runners can keep several MG3 firing. As the standard rifle back then was the venerable G3 (also chambered for 7.62 NATO), there was only one type of ammo required to supply both the riflemen and the MG gunners. Considering the Cold War mission of the Bundeswehr (fighting on the defensive with questionable logistical situation), that wasn't that bad a setup.
As for wearing a protective glove for barrel change, I've seen more than one machine gunner wearing the standard-issue "winter glove" on the right hand just for that purpose.

@@thendnjedi1388 The line you usually hear with regards to the P1 is "8 warning shots, 4 well-aimed throws", meaning you have a better chance hitting someone by throwing parts of the gun than by firing it.
I cannot really substantiate that, as I happened to hit my mark quite well the one time I got to fire it. (2x 5 shots at 25m, 4 and 5 hits respectively.)
As for ammo, you don't get much opportunity to load non-regulation ammo in the German army. ;-)

Got the chance to fire the MG3 and I loved it so much better than what we had then in the M60 MG. Some of the Machine gunners could pull of single shots with it and to my surprise with much better accuracy than I expected, over all I loved it and would carry it into battle without questions of it performance .... Scouts Out
at a father and son shoot i went to with grandpa near denver he brought his mg42 out from a museum and i got to fire a few belts. also got to fire 1 50rd belt from an mg3 as well as 2 mp40 mags. those f&s fathers day shoots are super fun and i strongly suggest everyone try it at least once. puts a big smile on your face the rest of the day
The MG3 is no fun to carry around with its 12.5 Kg (with bipod). MG-Rifleman in the Bundeswehr are famous for their "colorful" language during marches.
But the firepower of that thing is jawdropping. I remember a Shooting exercise with targets from 25 m up to 600 m in Schwarzenborn: I managed to hit all targets, the one at 25 m had 13 hits.

I was an MG3 gunner (1200rpm version) in the Bundeswehr. During a European Challenge Event, i dumped 16.000 rounds into a small forrest. When the event was over after 4 weeks, the forrest was gone.

Little correction: The MG-3 is not produced by HK. It was designed and made by Rheinmetall. HK made a deal with Rheinmetall which meant that HK would be the only one making the G3 and Rheinmetall the only one making MG3s. Also MG42/59 is not the comercial name by Rheinmetall, it is the name of the italian Beretta version of this gun, which eventually became the MG-74 of the austrians.
The MG74 is made by Steyr tho
He says HK in the first part of the video but Rheinmetall in the later part, tho.
And why were zhere H&K markings on many parts of my MG3?

Sweden does use MG3 on its tanks, Stridsvagn 122. They named their version of MG3 "Kulspruta 94".
I used that machine gun in Greek army and it never jammed...

The ones we had were old refurbished ones. Essentially, there were stamps at the side with the production date, then someone had filed off the swastikas and a refurbishment date was stamped above. That was in 2010.
Essentially, you'd have the big Reichsadler, with the swastika bit on the bottom filed off, with a faint 1940s production date below and a clear, deep stamp above reading something like "Nachgerüstet 1961." Made me wonder just how many hands the gun had been in and how many rounds were put through it.
But then, I suspect, the only original part left were probably the frame, the stock and the muzzle booster and the rest was probably replaced over time as parts failed.
This video bring back memories - I used the machinegun in the Danish army back in '90-'91. We called it M62 (the year the machinegun was introduced in the Danish army). I used it on bipods, tri-pods and fixed tank machinegun (Leopard I tank). The M62 (MG-3) was/is a very effective machinegun with a lot of kills on it's conscience.

I got to fire an MG 3 when I was in the army in Germany in 1977. I was surprised when I pulled the trigger how many rounds went downrange, but it was still accurate. You hit what you aimed at.
I have some experience with it. It shoots so fast, that you will hit your targets. It can feel like it jumps alot from the recoil, but you still hit the targets somehow.

The Wehrmacht rarely used Flecktarn. The Waffen SS made much heavier use of that, so those are obviously Waffen SS soldiers ;)
The genious behind the MG42 is: It is cheap to produce, reliable (though as with all German guns has to be cleaned), easy to use.
With those stamped metal parts you can churn them out by the thousands at a reasonable price - using unskilled labour. In many respects it reminds me of Ma Deuce.
Shot the MG3 during my national service time...the recoil is pretty intense, and the sound is really nice; almost like the MG42. Totally loved to shoot it.😁
This brings back memories. At the beginning of my military career I was machine gunner 2 in my group. The MG 3 or 42 is an excellent weapon.
I am still learning soldiers in the Norwegian national guard how to use the MG3 , and we use it. It is a great gun, but the the world is moving on and i dream of the new MG 4 to be the new one when the trails starting now. The MG 3 can also be fitted with rails fore modern optics. sight adjustment needs some training due to 4 different position of the too barrel, to shootings with each barrel because each barrel can be put in 2 ways. We also have to bolts and we switch bolts every 2 pipe change so they can wear the same. The MG are also big fan of oil, special when using the red plastic training ammo we use. Fore the long walks i still haven't found a comfy way to carry it :) ...and do not drop the used pipe in the snow, it needs to go in the pipe box or it sinks down to hard ground, and in 2m of snow....you need to shuffle a lot to find it back :)

7:45 the MG42/59 is Beretta's version which incorporates a heavier bolt to reduce the rate of fire to 800 rounds/minute.
They did the same thing with the Austrian Mg 74.

The heavier bolt is issued to the infantry guns, to easy they ammo supply while still having a respectable rate of fire. The lighter bolt with their 1200 rpm its issued to the tank guns.

I've shot that weapon several times on the range. I was a MAG gunner in the Dutch army Reserve. On some occasions i got the chance to shoot the german MG. It is an great weapon for supressive fire. I absolutely loved it. But for acuracy, give me my MAG any day.
A slower rate of fire is more exact. The MG is absolutely a beast to fire. I loved the experience. 😁👍
With my years as a MAG gunner, i found out the hard way that thare really ar no people who like to be a MAG gunner's helper who feeds the gun like seen on the german video. I solved that by strapping a canvas bag on my belt and put in two or three belts linked to eichother and zig-zag that in the bag. Walking on a tactical displacement it surprised the opposing side several times as i could lay down instant and overwelming suppressive fire. Just to give my team more time and more chance to react and counter the threat. Offcouse always in the safety of the training grounds. I'm Lucky never to have seen war. I allways carry'd my own ammo couse no one felth like helping out. 🤷♂️. But i'm happy with that. Linking those belths in my bag gave me some serious fun 😁
I’ve shot the 34 and 42 both at Battlefield Vegas. 300 rounds does not last long in either of them. They are both ergonomically sound. Portable. And leave your face covered in brass shavings.

The fancy stuff is just a laser fire recognition system. It is used for simulated combat in training , as to not rely on judges for hit counting. Cool, but not part of the regular battledress.

I have seen the modern German Bundeswehr put TWO on a turret that was towed by a Mercedes SUV. Why fire one when you can fire two? :D
If I was a ruler of a country, I would not care about its original makers in this one instance, because it’s TOO DAMN EFFECTIVE and I would want my troops to have every edge possible!!
I carried and used the MG3 in the Norwegian Army for about 10 months in 1991/92. As you can se here in the Bundeswerh video, the doctrine is to fire about 4-5 rounds at the time targeting personell and vehicles almost like firing a buckshot shotgun. The high rate of fire gives a kind of 'gyro' effect in the gun; instead of jumping around like a more conventional 500-700 RPM MG's it pushes back in a more even force. With practice you can make those 4-5 rounds slice trough the target like the famous 'buzzsaw' of WW2 from bottom to top and attaching running troops will find the burst's hard to evade. In my experience from daily practice on the live firing range barrel change was rarely necessary due to this doctrine; instead of firing constantly like a water cooled WWI gun you'd pick single targets and give them your 4-5 rounds and then pause to find another target, giving the barrel a little time to cool off, like seen the Bundeswerh video. None the less we're drilled endlessly in quick barrel change. :-) Now days I think the Norwegian army has changed to the MG42's 'modern' ancestors the Belgian SAW and MAG 240.
shooting this thing is so fun, had a chance at firing one, both live rounds and blanks, bursted a full 50 belt, so damn satisfying.

MG-3 gunner here, Norway 90/91. Standard equipment when I was in the army, each 8-man team had it.
Norway uses it too. I've shot it a few times on military exercises. 90% of problems with this gun are user error, so it's highly reliable for the common user.
Things recruits tend to do wrong with this machinegun: - mixing up the order of reassembling, resulting in jammed weapons - putting to much stress on the bipod, resulting in a broken bipod or worse, a damaged weapon case - forgetting about safety procedure if mg3 jams, resulting in an open chamber cookoff i.e. ammo casing flying into their faces

@@dankovac1609 jup. why does it happen? they try to comply with gun safety you know, but it's not fully compatible with this weapon. the normal safety process dictates that you toggle safety, unload and check the chamber by unhinging the barrel to the right side. ok. BUT - not when the gun jams on its own. then you don't check the chamber for five minutes. or if you really must then put a bucket or similar at the chamber.
You forgot putting the hand infront of the trigger like a rifle, resulting in ejected casings smashing against their fingers rather forcefully....the guy who did it in our company was lucky he din't break his finger.
Das mit zu viel Stress auf dem Zweibein ist so falsch. Das MG 42 und MG3 sind dafür ausgelgt sich in die Waffe rein zu lehnen. Im Gegensatz zu den modernen LMG (Mg36 etc.) Ist leider ein Irrglaube der sich schon seit der Einführung der Waffe in der Truppe hält. Reinlegen in die Waffe führt grundsätzlich zu einem besseren Trefferbild. Das Zweibeine Abbrechen liegt meißt daran das dumme Rekruten ohne Sinn und Verstand mit dem Ding geegen alles rammeln was sich im Weg befindet. Der Rest ist soweit richtig. Nachzulesen in ZDV 3/14 314. Instellunggehen.

I used to know a couple too...one jumped on Crete, was with Ramcke in Afrika and fought in Normandy, another was a member of the force who liberated Mussolini from Gran Sasso. The latter told me a story when they had to retreat to Germany. He decided he wanted to report back to his parent unit (which was Luftgaukommando XVII I think), but actually didn’t have a marching order.
He was stopped by a Wehrmacht captain at a bridge who didn’t want to let him pass due to the missing order. He simply shot him (with a MP 40).
I laughed my a§§ off! Exactly my kind of guy.
I carried one of these in the army. Beautiful weapon (in my opinion). Works very well in all conditions. The lowest temperature I operated it in was about -30 degrees celcius. No jams or anything, as long as it was lubed up properly with a mix of weapon oil/lube and red spirits to prevent freezing of working parts.
it really shows German engineering is timeless.
The MG42/MG3, properly deployed in short, targeted bursts and the Russian PKM are for me the best general purpose machine guns in the world.

i have quite a lot of experience with the MG74 used by the austrian army, which is one of the variants of the MG3 as you've mentioned. The key difference we were taught to the german version is the heavier locking mechanism and therefore lower rate of fire (around 800 rds/min) if i'm correct in remembering.
I can only confirm what you've said, it's a wonderful GPMG, easy to use, disassemble and quite powerful everything an infantry squad needs.
Although i have to say, that i never found inserting the rounds difficult, just as the change of the barrel, it just takes a little practice and getting used to that damn glove :D
as for accuracy i have to say, especially if you use redpoints / nightvision sights, it's superb and effective range is around 800m (although the bullets travel much much further down range).
the only thing that sucks, is the way you have to log those 12 kg around, since there is no carrying handle, it is quite cumbersome over long distances on foot, but other than that it really is extremely good and compared to the other MGs i got to shoot, very easy and definitely my MG of choice.

When you show those black and white parts of US troopers firing a MG 42, I as a former conscript of the Bundeswehr shouted immediately: "Wrong, you do it wrong. Lean into it. Clamp the MG between the bipod and your shoulder if you want to hit something not only by chance but by aiming.

I liked that MG3. With a little practice of your trigger finger you could fire just one single shot, burst of fire with 3 shots were very feasible.
That gave an extremly good hit pattern... 30 shots with 25 hits in the inner circle? No problem.

My dad had an MG-3 when he served in the Danish military in the 80s, he still talks about how awesome it was to this day...the designation for it in the Danish military is M62 (62 being the year it was adopted in the Danish military)
