  • The DShK 1938 (ДШК, for Дегтярёва-Шпагина Крупнокалиберный, Degtyaryova-Shpagina Krupnokaliberny, "Degtyaryov-Shpagin Large-Calibre") is a Soviet heavy machine gun firing the 12.7×108mm cartridge. The weapon was also used as a heavy infantry machine gun, in which case it was frequently deployed with a two-wheeled mounting and a single-sheet armour-plate shield. It took its name from the weapons designers Vasily Degtyaryov, who designed the original weapon, and Georgi Shpagin, who improved the cartridge feed mechanism. It is sometimes nicknamed Dashka (familiar form of female name Daria) in Russian-speaking countries, from the abbreviation.

    "Nothing about this gun says sweety" Slavic culture has traditionally had this weird thing with nicknames. While Americans and other western powers used terms/names of empowerment to show their respect for weapons platforms, Russians instead show their respect through endearment. Westerners show respect through fear of what a weapon can do to their enemies, while easterners show respect to a weapon through the gratitude of what it does to help them. So they feel completely comfortable calling their best weapons "Sweety", "honey", "little cobra", "babushka", "Tulip", "Frog" - the kinds of names one would give to their pet/loved ones - because the nickname isn't meant for the enemy, it is meant to signify the relationship between it and those who use them. Generally speaking, the friendlier/more disarming the name is, the more the soldiers like it.
    And for a culture as traditionally cold and stoic as the slavs, that is absolutely heart warming.

    The funnier thing is her nickname "Dushka" mean "sweetie" in Russian. Yes, they really love this gun before the NSV was invented.

    • @ryc3rz
      @ryc3rz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      Kusakabe Shinhoto The nickname is quite obvious. In Russian the name of this gun has only 3 letters: "D ", "Sh ", and "K ". Sh-sound ( as in shower) being just a single letter. So it shouldn't be pronounced D-S-H-K, but D-Sh-K. so you just add 2 vowels and you have Dushka.

    As a veteran of OEF, I can testify as to the fearsome effect of this weapon. The vast majority of our casualties came from IEDs, but these were probably the #2. As you would imagine, even our extremely effective body armor offers no protection, even at long range, with the exception of bullet fragments.
    Vehicles do not hold up well, either; Armoured glass and viewpoints will stop a couple rounds if you're lucky, but I have seen this gun hit an MRAP door so hard and so many times that it peened, bent or otherwise jammed it against frame so tightly it may as well have been welded shut.

  • @qelleri
    @qelleri 6 ปีที่แล้ว +324

    DSHK is no longer in large use by Russian military. Nowdays they use NSV as primary HMG. Large numbers of KORD are also in service(you actually had some footage of Kord there 3:15).

    • @qelleri
      @qelleri 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Now when you mention it. It's actually pretty difficult to say which one it is. Im used to seeing those single handle-buttstocks only on kords, but seems that russkies use them on NSV's too. With closer look it really seems to be NSV.

      Why no range listed for the armor penetration of the M2? Is it classified or just a typo? Either way we can see both weapons are very comparable. I would go so far as to say interchangeable as far as battlefield capabilities are concerned.

      GSch-series are not gatling, it uses gas from gun shot to rotate barrels, no engine power required=Less weight, mass, size, cheaper, effective, actually have more RPM than gatling 6-barrels,with only 2-3 barrels used

      олег бурдин I know, but saying gatling style is more understable for most ppl,
      the only issue that I know if about gas operated multirotatingbarrel desings is that it induces heavy vibration other than that I would say that they are superior to US multibarrel weapons.
      (i also find it funny how the GSCH-2-30 has almost the same RoF while having only 2 barrels and being much much lighter than the GAU-8)

    I initially thought this was the PKM. But wow. The Dushka! Nice. I meant to type more, so here's my follow up. What a bae of a machine gun this is. And yes, I do agree with you, it's got an interesting nickname for something that spews pure blyat at its targets.

    On 3:45 you have video of NSV machinegun, not DShK.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSV_machine_gun
    In Russian Armed Forces DShK now mainly remains in reserve being replaced by NSV and Kord.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kord_machine_gun
    Guys who use DShK on bipod (5:20) are most likely Ukrainians judging by uniform. Due to the poor state of their army in 2014 they being forced to use old machineguns like DShK (with modern improvements like bipod, muzzle brake, stock) and sometimes even Maxims.
