    I think it's important to note that he's not referring to white smoke at startup, but rather white smoke while driving. Point in case, you can have white smoke at startup due to glow plug relay not working. Thank you

    I had white smoke. It was worse at start up. After looking at a few things I also noticed diesel in my coolant. Googling found several people have had an injector cup crack. Further inspection soon found exactly that; a cracked injector cup.

    Hi Clint. Some time ago I rebuilt the fuel bowl due to the drain valve pushing fuel onto my driveway. I also out the highest output fuel pressure regulator spring in it, ( kit from Riff Raff ) and fired it back up. No leaks, and guess what, no more white smoke. And it hasn’t smoked since. No matter the weather conditions. Was it a fluke,because there was no mention of what I did that would eliminate the white smoke. It is an ‘01 F250 SuperDuty with the power stroke dieselV-8.

    Fantastic video! One thing to add though, if you still have smoke after unplugging the injectors the injector causing the problem can be leaking fuel due to a stuck ball valve or whatever. So, at that point the only way to isolate the problem injector would be to block the fuel supply to the injectors one at a time. Or measuring the return fuel amounts for each injector the one with the least or the one with no return most likely the case is leaking fuel into the combustion chamber not allowing for optimal combustion temperatures. Meaning the metal is acting as a heat sink. Also measuring the exhaust temps with a thermal imaging camera is also a good test the one coolest means its not firing the one thats the highest is getting to much fuel, that will at least point you into a direction.

    My 7.3 makes a great gopher hole fogger in the winter (20*F or lower). plugging the block in (and with a silicone heat pad on the oil pan), the smoke is very slight, if at all.....

    I have really enjoyed your youtube videos. They are very informative. I recently took your advice about replacing the Engine Wiring Harness. I have also replaced the Valve Cover gaskets, ICP, EBP, MAP, MAT, CPS Sensors, as well as most of the Vacuum Lines. I have even rebuilt the Injectors using your video as a guide. I am looking for some guidance with regards to a P1272 & P1277 Code (High to Low Side Open) I received when doing a Buss Test with FORScan. I did Pin Testing on the IDM Connector. When Ohming it out I received 3.0 (cyl 2), 2.9 (cyl 4), 2.9 (cyl 6) 3.0 (cyl 8), 2.8 (cyl 1), 3.0 (cyl 3), 3.1 (cyl 5) & 2.9 (cyl 7). When I did the IDM Ground Circuit test (23 to 18, 23 to 26, 24 to 18 & 24 to 26) it all showed open. I even replaced the Solenoids on Injector 2 with 3 different ones and even replaced the #2 Injector thinking I might have rebuilt it wrong., but still get the P1272 & P1277. I am thing that I might have a bad IDM. Any thoughts or advice would be welcomed.

    I changed my icp sensor and it still randomly dies only when cold....also if I hold it to the floor it has no turbo or turbo sound and sounds as if it's missing or lack of fuel....it only smokes on start up when cold but no smoke when driving...i did check both sides of the turbo and it spins in one piece...
    When I do gradually bring it all the way to the floor to try to build pressure to spoil the turbo when I do finally let off it dies right away and then it takes two or three times to start it before it will start running on its own and then sometimes it will run a bit sluggish and then idle up

    Suggestion on where to start no check engine light on when key in on pos wts isn’t on but the glow plug Element light is. Truck has extremely hard starts when hot not as bad when cold but still hard starting . It smokes white badly on starts and acceleration I’m away for work as of now so I’m not in access to scan it. I know this isn’t a issues along the lines of the cooling system as I recently did the pressure test? I recently replaced the ipr and the only performance upgrade that was done is stage one injectors were. I’m assuming it’s injector o rings but I won’t be able to pull the valve cover here until I’m back from work

    Hi there I watch all your 7.3 videos , I'm based in Australia and I think I have a fairly good knowledge on the 7.3 ( lol maybe not ) I think I have an 1668 code injector drive module, is there a fuse or relay that would go first ? I was just driving along and she just shut down in the middle of the road, I recently replaced the icp sensor .. please help

    My truck is a 1995 7.3 power stroke F350I was blowing white smoke Change many sensors I found out my block heater was shot AKA not working Change my block heater and all the coolant I have 108000 miles on this truck I know it is the mileage is true because I've seen the truck the day it was bought brand new from a friend of mine I work with He took very good care of it but he always parked it in the barn My truck is parked in the elements it would not start at 45゚ It would blow white smoke and not start Until I change the block heater and of course you must replace all the coolant For my year it needs to be the correct coolant otherwise The coolant will eat the cups Last year I replaced The glow plugs This year I replaced the block heater all the coolant and I plug it in It's been down to 20゚ in northern Minnesota if that thing is plugged in she has no problem I don't even hear the starter term before it starts Apparently this old girl likes to be warm before she'll start and I'm OK with that I plug it in every night whenever I come home and I have a timer on that power cord so she's only on certain times when I plan on waking up and get moving She fires up every morning like I said down to 20゚ but northern Minnesota trust me it's gonna get the 40 below and I know that old girl will still start no white smoke I hope

      95 is like the 98 99 a switching year yet most everything applies here in the video

      95 is all similar, except no intercooler, different injectors, turbo, down pipe, and programming. Pistons are forged on these early engines. The 99 and older are not.

    Just curious, I bought an e99 7.3 and it had quite a bit of problems and a shop found brass in the oil filter. Shop installed new reman long block 7.3 in the truck. They had to take the motor back out after install due to leaking front cover. New cover installed and the shop put a little over 200 miles on it.
    I made it 72~ miles to a tire shop to make an appointment and the truck ran great. After about 45 minutes in the shop, I started the truck, started driving and about 400 feet later the truck started to “clack” really bad and it was billowing white smoke. Parked the truck for a tow. No oil visible on the dipstick. Any ideas?

    I have a question sir. I have 4-4.5k miles on fresh rebuild with a stage 1 camshaft.4" exhaust, wicked wheel2 with KC turbine wheel, and stage 1 Full Force Diesel 180cc 0 nozzel single shot injectors and php chip. Have a crank no start that is about glow plugs. Put new GP relay (motorcraft), yet still problematic. my fuel pressure bleeds down over night and it takes 10+ cycles of key till new fuel pump times out, yet crank and white smoke no start unless I jump across the GP relay. Once it starts and warms a bit, she will continue to bust right off. Let her set over night...no start. Have new motorcraft IPR, IPC, new ecm (original shorted out last Dec.) IDM checked and is great, chip also check good. When warm it surges at idle. Otherwise all is well. DUH! ripping all inj. out, going back to split shots, but Im very frustrated, mad, and generally in a poor mood. A Fancy 7.3 shop wanted over 6 grand to fix. $1400 labor to r&r 8 injectors and $2500 for 8 160/30 injectors. Guess they thought I was an idiot. Now I have to fix it. H.E.L.P.!!!!! Ima 64yo mechanic but I feel like I dont know JACK.

    Clint - thanks for pointing out the solenoid shimming issue. I’ve never understood the need for that if you are just shimming the armature back to factory. I’ve had discussions with the guy that sells these kits and they’ve never been able to explain why solenoid shimming is necessary. It’s bunk.

    I have a 1999 Ford f150 5.4 that's acting weird. I can go two weeks with no coolant leaking at all then all of a sudden it starts disappearing. Changed oil and it looked fine. Still looks fine nothing mixed in. I will have white smoke that comes and goes. Usually, when I first start it up. Every so often it will last longer than usual even after driving it a bit. Sometimes, I can run up the road and come back and it's gone and won't smoke anymore that whole day. No obvious leaks anywhere. Runs pretty good doesn't overheat as long as I keep the reservoir filled. Recently, changed my thermostat my temp gauge will go to middle once warmed up but sometimes the needle will drop to quarter ways. Like I said the smoke and the coolant will come and go. I drive it everyday one day it won't smoke or loose coolant couple days go by then it will then go away again. Also, the white smoke doesn't smell sweet. Nothing under oil cap nothing in oil . Any suggestions

    My 7.3 missing pretty bad plugged into a computer and had an issue communicating with the pcm so I’m not sure what to do I don’t want to just start throwing money at it blindly at this point. Seems like bad injector or injectors I will have to do that that you suggested and unplug em as it’s running but if that’s not it I’m lost with this pickup

    just replaced wiring harness and my mat sensor connector on the new sensor is like not going on!! The old one was difficult throwing it on there but the new one just seems to only go so far on the plug! Got white smoke trying to start it until batteries died

    I bought a 2000 ford 7.3 powerstroke with bad batteries I replaced them and was cranking it to start it cycling the glow plugs, and it would crank and then it stopped and quit turning over and would make s loud click under the hood, starter still engaging

    My 7.3 is having EOT and CTS issues.. the combination is now frustrating Smokey cold starts.. P0197.. no short from EOT connector to 42pin, ohms out like it should.. sensor also ohms as it should per temp.. aiming at PCM pins and or wire from 42pin to PCM.. I enjoy troubleshooting but I am tempted to just run new wires for both sensors to PCM rather than buy the harness

    I have a question , for anyone . I have a 94.5 ps 161,000 miles. I store it alot . Last couple years or so when I start truck it hazzes some and I have burning of the eyes if you close to exhaust. After driving down road and come back it’s not like that . Runs great . New glow plugs 5 years back fords. This is my only issue . I have no cat. What makes the eyes burn ? Fuel? I have 6637 air intake opened up behind turbo. I have hydra also . Everything else is stock

    Wouldn't over filling the oil in the engine block also could lead to oil coming out on the exhaust manifold. And not necessarily mean a bad cylinder condition..?

    My passenger side manifold, cylinder closest to the fire wall is wet and I can see white smoke coming out from the manifold (only that exit) with what you described in the video should I attempt to fix it or sell/scrap the truck, I’m not great on money and have a daily vehicle since I don’t drive the truck due to the issue

      Pull the manifold th-cam.com/video/d0DKirb4aP4/w-d-xo.html and confirm the inside is wet if the inside of the manifold is wet and the output from the block hole is wet and you can't swing a rebuild its time to move it on down the road If the manifold is wet from diesel fuel then you know its just a injector and that's a cheap easy fix and with seeing white smoke at that out put the manifold needed new bolts and gasket any ways

    I get like a 1 second puff if I start below 50f without letting the glow plugs cycle. Nothing if I let them cycle or it's warmer than that. I'm assuming probably gonna be due for glow plugs and relay sometime soon.

      Look up the Stancor mod. It will replace the glow plug relay with an actual heavy relay.

    Hey buddy, I replaced the pedestal on my 7.3 yesterday because it was leaking and everything turned out really good. The white smoke is gone but now my cruise control doesn’t work. Can you imagine what I might’ve bumped or broke loose or short circuited or whatever because my cruise control is not working on my 2000 Ford F350. Thank you.

      Check your glow plug relay. See if you forgot to put the ground wire back on. If it is on, disconnect your ground wire, go for a test drive. If your cruise works with your glow plug relay ground wire unplugged, replace your PCM...Ask me how I know🤣

    I'm building a e99 im at the same stage as you iv got the cab off motor is on a stand just did oil pan and oil cooler.... my motor is a early 99 putting out 230 ph and the later motor put out 270 ? Can you put out a video on the differents between them and all the parts needed to convert a e99 to late 99 that would be much appreciated!

      I have a e99 as well. Its a pain to get them updated or should I say expensive. Injectors, turbo and all related plumbing plus you need the computer to get re flashed as well. I believe the exhaust manifolds and up pipes need to be changed as well but haven't researched that good enough yet. I've decided to just refresh mine as it came. I don't want to spend what it cost at once to upgrade everything

    what causes a pulsating idle at operating temp {revs up } 50-70 rpms it has to run at operating temp for at least 30 mins before it starts pulsating has a new adrenaline HPOP. BLEED OIL RAILS? OR ?????

    I had white smoke at startup. Watched your videos and narrowed it down to CPS and MAP sensors. Changed them out and the white smoke went away at startup and idle......but. I still have low power, hesitation and white smoke when I floor it at 25ish mph. I have to let up and feather it and it will accelerate normally. Ideas?

      I attacked it with the "sensor cannon" and its running better. IPR, ICP, fuel bowl delete too. Fuel cleaner, good oil change, and basic maintenance helped a lot. Still have intermittent no start when hot though, but not in a while. Fingers crossed. @@metrokustomz5816

    I have watched all of your videos due to being new to the diesel world. I am seeing I get tons of white smoke after the truck starts heating up and only when the coolant systems is pressurized. When I release the pressure the white smoke goes away. Is this possibly cracked injector cups? I recently put a new water pump and thermostat on it as well as a new clutch fan. Any suggestions?

      either a cup failure or a rare cracked head or very rare head gasket , 2 tests can be done a pressure leak down test . this is for head leaks amzn.to/3S2lYTa this is for pressure test of cooling systems amzn.to/3TZh2ko You can get cheap versions at your local auto store real basic ones much cheaper

    I have white smoke on start up I replaced injectors, hpop and wiring harness. I didn't have this problem before.

      If your white smoke smells like diesel, I would first check glow plugs, relay, valve gasket wiring. If those are good, check IDM. Mine finally died one day, and startup smoke dissappeared, along with major improvement in overall performance, after replacemet with a rebuilt unit. Cheapest option is the mail out rebuild some companies do. I also swung the connector in, and moved my IDM to the engine bay, as the wheel well location is a PITA to get to, and I had the room behind the intake.

      Change the oil to delovac and use archoil 9100 in the oil, starts will be noticeably better. You have to keep using arch oil 9100 every change.

    Wow, I think I have every problem mentioned. Looks like oil on my manifolds, truck runs good, seems too atleast. But just started pushing white smoke out exhaust. Looks like blow by in my coolant res, coolant looks clean but the top of the coolant bottle looks black and brown sludge stuff. Also leaking oil on the mating surface from oil cooler to the block. I can some red coolant dripping down the oil filter.

    hi i have a question i have a 1996 7.3 but it only smoke when the turbo start to build pressure like in 3rd to 4th gear is a lot of smoke and when i go normal 1st 2nd gear it dont smoke for me is rare im new with this truck

      engine is at a heavier load in 3rd and 4th where in 1st and 2nd its doing the same thing but combustion is hotter and burning off the ??? so do a compression leak down test to rule out rings if that passes then rebuild the injectors the problem will be gone I have a injector series that covers everything you need to know and a video on proper removal and starting

    Picked up a 2002 7.3 project truck. Very bad blow by and white smoke. Oil coming out the rear passenger side exhaust manifold. Today i took the valve covers off and discovered a broken glow plug from that cylinder. It definitely allows the blow by but would that also possibly account for the oil on the manifold and the white smoke?

      White smoke from a diesel engine can have different causes, depending on the thickness and duration of the smoke. It can be caused by faulty injection timing, low temperature in the combustion chamber, condensation, coolant leakage, or worn or damaged components. oil on the manifold , leaking valve cover-bad spring - seal- ring- //// fix glow plug s run for a few days and clean manifold at same time glow plugs replaced see what comes of it

    I have a 02 7.3 I’ve been fighting injector orings for the last three years. Literally every summer same time of year to the exact date Facebook memories I’m doing injector orings. Went doorman and motorcraft (twice) brand did not matter Same result. Now having white smoke issues on start up it’s bad bad. But goes away in 2 minutes or soon as it warms up or you can hear the turbo spinning through the exhaust. I replaced the oil cooler orings recently they were leaking on cold start. But bank 2 injector control pressure is bouncing all over the place on road test so I know the issue lies on the driver side is there a way to narrow it down to a individual injector or cylinder bank one is steady at almost 1700 psi while bank 2 bounces from anywhere around 1200 psi to 1800psi. I hate to pull all 4 injectors again and replace orings or pull the cup seals they were replaced 4 years ago with the cylinder sleeve loctite.

      Update tested glow plug relay again and to find out it was intermittently working. Replaced relay. After replacing relay I now have check engine light on was not on before I replaced glow plug relay. P1210 p1209 p1211 p1212 p0304. Ordered new pressure sensor cam sensor and pressure regulator. Going to pressure test the cooling system overnight and see if it drops and see how it starts. And pull injectors to see if it’s cup seals. Just confused I had no check engine lights till I replaced the glow plug relay

      Update to update did an overnight coolant pressure test maybe 1 psi drop overnight. Unfortunately it now is a crank no start now. Before it was a crank 5- 10 seconds start white smoke for a minute or two then go away.

    White most likely is due to a dirty filter in the gas tank. Believe me I got this problem before, removing the fuel tank and the canister cleaned them and voilà . Never got white smoke 5 years ago....

    What about white smoke only on startup? My 97 smokes like a fog machine on startup but clears up when warm. Does it all the time when it's sat for 2 or 3 hours no matter the temperature outside. Any ideas on this?

      The possible sources of blue smoke are:
      Worn valves or guide seals
      Failure to change your oil or oil filter regularly enough
      Damage or wear to pistons
      Turbocharger issues

      Just once the app was torque and during a test on the injector buzz I do know when using app based scanners and reg scanners if the signal is not good to strong it will cause that issue and if you do a bi directional request and skip a procedure

      No 50 cent mod fixes the connector under the valve cover. Shimming is on the injector head

    Every once in awhile, I'll get an extremely lomg crank, and upon start up I'll get a big plume of white out of the exhaust. Guys in the groups are telling me check my GPR and GP.

    I determined it was the injector on the passenger side. But unfortunately, I drove it and blowed it up. The injector tip was cracked. It hydro locked. Pushrods bent. Pulled the wrist pin out of the piston. And beat a hole in the cylinder wall. It was long block and cab off time.
