  • "Since it first arrived for 1991, the Ford Explorer has been a top seller among larger SUV’s and crossovers, with over 7 million sales to date. But, the market for three-row family utilities is bigger and more cut-throat than ever. So, the latest Explorer is outfitted with lot of little changes that Ford hopes will bring big results, with less exploring and more conquering..."

    So many people complaining about the price, but for what it has to offer its priced right IMO. I have a 2017 fully loaded sport, and was going back and fourth between the 4runner limited. Months of research to narrow it down to these two vehicles, and I don't regret my decision one bit.

    • @MyCrippledWings
      @MyCrippledWings 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      60Powrstroke you will when it comes to resale value and overall reliability. 4runner is an entirely different SUV. A REAL SUV. Explorer is a glorified crossover, nothing more. My 07 base 4runner is guaranteed to outlive your explorer. And, retain its value minimum 5 times as much.

    I've had 2 explorers.. 99 eddie bauer 4.0 4wd (which was an excellent vehicle) , currently own a 2018 sport. The sport is a lot of vehicle! Last year my dealer had let me drive an explorer xlt 4wd while my sho was in for maintenance, had the loaner for a couple weeks and that sold me on the explorer. Still have my sho.

    That's a '16 though. Biggest unmentioned change from 16 to 17 is the replacement of MyFord Touch with Sync 3

    • @Scotty_in_Ohio
      @Scotty_in_Ohio 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep but it makes a HUGE difference - I've had several with MFT and now 2 with Sync 3 - still money talks and if you can save lots of cash and can handle using MFT it may be a win.

    I had a 91' Explorer and I took that thing everywhere. It was a true truck with 4 low. This new Explorer will probably get front end damage on a speed bump. Thanks to soccer moms most modern SUV's are just tall AWD cars. Luckily my dad kept my old Explorer and we use it Deer hunting on roads this new Explorer could never traverse.

      the one i saw, it got pretty chipped up on a 5 mile drive down a normal road, so it sure does seem fragile :/ and i'm sure someone, somewhere will prove this thing could do those trails, but probably only with like some mud tires on it :P

    I drove a used '16 Platinum on a 2 1/2 hour drive from the auction to our shop, and couldn't believe how gorgeous and comfortable the interior was. Motor had a lot of balls, also. The thing could hit 90mph in no time and cruise there safe and stable no problem lol. Steering was kinda sloppy though.

    After having 2 Ford Flexs (and 09 SE and a 14 SEL) my wife wanted something different - we ended up with a '17 Explorer Platinum and she LOVES it. If you're looking at sticker prices and having to sit down to recover and don't need the higher ground clearance or the off road "modes" that the Explorer has then the Flex is a very good choice fully loaded but minus the massaging seats and very nice sounding audio (though the Flex Limited still offers a decent Sony system) you can save almost $8k and still get the EcoBoost 3.5l motor and AWD - and in my opinion more middle row space and rear cargo room with the 3rd row folded than with the Explorer. Still if you want some luxury the Explorer is the way to go short of moving into a Lincoln which there isn't a sister model between Ford and Lincoln for the Explorer.

      Lots of hard work, planning and saving Jordan. I'm by no means a "baller". I make a decent living - and for me most of the vehicles I drive are "mileage machines" usually get 50k + miles on them a year which the company I work for pays to basically make the payment for my "work car" after about 18 months what the value vs. what I owe is even so I "turn it over" - I typically get a new car because of financing deals and manufacturer money along with working with a salesperson and dealership I've worked with for over 20 years - I typically get a very good deal. I'm also away from my family 10-15 days a month for work so if living out of a suitcase is a "nice life" I guess I'm guilty. My grandfather said to me more than once: "you can have anything you want but probably not everything you want". We also don't have any other consumer debt a nice (but still not over the top "luxury brand" car is our one "splurge" - for what most people spend on a couple evenings on the town or in booze or entertainment covers the payment on that "nice car"... Jordan - have some dreams and aspirations bro - work a few extra hours and save some - you'll achieve your desires I have faith in you man!

    I love my 2017 Ford Explore XLT with the 202A optional package. With the white gold metallic. This makes me my third. Explore XLT that I've had,and I have loved every one. That I have owned. The last Ford explore XLT I had. Had 96 thousand miles on it. And I got really good service out of it. And I cried because l had to let it go. It was blue with beige cloth seats. And sun roof. And I loved that Explore so much. And I will probably own more Ford Explores in the near future.

    • @suprsquirrel2215
      @suprsquirrel2215 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's the issue. Sure, you can get a Land Rover Discovery for essentially the same price. Problem is there are all kinds of complaints about the 'fit and finish' on those (we considered one prior to buying our '17 Explorer.) Most every 'luxury' vehicle you get into in the price range to compare with the Explorer is their 'entry level' SUV. So you're basically paying for the brand name without all the bells and whistles. Trust me, we shopped many of those very 'luxury vehicles' prior to buying ours. :-)
      (Not arguing with you, agreeing with you.) :-)

    love how they call this a large family suv with ample spacious cargo room NOT, all these vehicles with their tiny frames and bodies today. My 99 Ford Explorer, the other day at sams club I put the rear seats down and brought home a brand new Samsung 75" Led 4k tv in the box, in the back of my explorer. This would not have a prayer to fit that except to pull a uhaul trailer to get it home.

    A lot of people make the Range Rover comment, and its true, I remember reading it was designed by one of the landrover designers(the 2011 which was more even more similar). Also Ford owned a Part of Rover in the past and the designs were under licence to ford.
    That being said, its a great suv. love the motor, it doesnt lean or roll in corners. I get 22-24mpg on the highway with great power. Its still a ford, there is some shoddy stuff, door gaps ect but all in all I think its a good bang for the buck when compared to others in the same price.(if you can say that about a 50k SUV). Honda and Mazda will probably age better, resale better but they were very bland, no excitement at all. Mazda felt under powered and the honda just screamed " I dont care about cars". Mazda had an amazing interior though.

      @@nightvan4427 but a Camry vs crossover explorer are two entirely different vehicles. It's like ford itself being pathetic in making comparisons between a 4runner (true SUV), and explorer (crossover). When they're entirely different vehicles built for different reasons. You're explorer will never outlive your Camry. Just sayin. My own mother works at ford, and never would personally own one. Lol

    Our only knock against the '17 Explorer Platinum is with it's fuel economy and range - 300miles to a tank if you're lucky and rarely better than 16 or 17 MPG although I will say my wife likes the power over her '14 Flex with the normally aspirated 3.5l V6...

    • @rustlesee
      @rustlesee 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They said regular gas, which does knock down performance and fuel mileage. If you can learn to try and keep your toe out of the boost, the EcoBoost set ups are great. The punch when you need it, but the fuel economy that you prefer.

    • @shoxsnake988
      @shoxsnake988 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Useless 3rd row. I see lots of Explorer's, but I've never seen a 3rd row passenger. At $54K, wow, I hope they sell a few. Hard to believe options cost $22K between base and top of the line.

    • @Scotty_in_Ohio
      @Scotty_in_Ohio 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with the 3rd row being (next to) useless - it was only setup as seats for the drive home - after that it's cargo area only - I will say they were more usable and comfortable than or previous Flexes.

    • @Scotty_in_Ohio
      @Scotty_in_Ohio 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's easy to talk yourself into the higher trim levels - Ford knew what they were doing when they made certain options available only on some trim levels and even when you could option certain features on lower ones (say an XLT) it would be less expensive to move up trim levels when doing so. An example is it's not an option to get the heated 2nd row seats in the Sport but you can add them in the XLT with certain packages and come standard in the Platinum - by the time you figure things out like that you've "talked yourself" into the higher trim level. You can also get more discount on a $50k SUV than you can on a $29k model...

They forgot to add that the driver and passenger seats have massage chairs.

    • @Scotty_in_Ohio
      @Scotty_in_Ohio 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Flex's 3rd row is perhaps a little more usable but the seats (at least in our '14) weren't that comfortable - I'd only ridden back there a couple times for short trips. Don't know which SUV/CUV has best 3rd row but neither the Explorer or Flex would be my top choices unless I'd looked at everything else and they still sucked less... jason3fc - which Flex did you get?

      thebayareapimp Ford vehicle safety ratings are adequate. Just not reliable enough to trust. Explorer hvac problems, 2016 Edge turns off while taking slow right hand turns. And they won't discount that much on the higher trims - they're selling too well. When compared to the Euro offerings even in platinum trim they come in well below the competition. In fact there are only a couple options that can be added to the platinum trim so the "all-in" price with destination is still right around $55k - expensive for an explorer but a bargain vs. say and Audi with similar equipment or an X5 which has higher maintenance costs and isn't as big.

It's the generation that came after that had a few issues, especially at first. Explorers from around 2002-2004 are also more prone to having issues, but aside from that, explorers are pretty rock solid. So what if in 3 years it will probably squeak and rattle and most likely have that "old American car smell" at least it'll be cheap enough and the only dealership that will sell it to you will offer "In house financing" and at last you weren't dumb enough to get stuck with the Grand (Elizabeth Warren) Cherokee which would have been MUCH worse.
