    in the last one, it looked like if the cyclist hadn't doubled back, the pickup and trailer couldn't have cleared the traffic lane - which takes "best flow for everyone" the highest level. your viewer deserves top marks.

      I'd have done the same in that situation, although more to stop him rubbing a trailer up the side of me rather than best flow for everyone.
      I won't lie, but I'd have also called the driver a winker* if they didn't thank me.

      I filter, but I make sure to _never_ stop next to the first car. Far enough behind the first car that I'm out of the turning radius, unless there's enough space in front of them that they can see me, but never next to them. Even if they don't have their turn lights on.
      And if I can't filter to right behind or in front of the first car, I also make sure to not stay next to a car that's going the same speed as me.

  • @Chigleybus
    @Chigleybus 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    You're right. This is just normal behaviour. It's only become "nice" in the context of the dregs who do "blast through" zebra crossings and undertake 40 ton lorries. I still don't consider those people cyclists (no comments please!!). They're just, unfortunately, people who have acess to a bike.

    • @wibbley1
      @wibbley1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agree, 'nice' because 99.9% of bikes I see everyday are ridden by complete knobbers.
      Even in these clips, there are a number of occasions bikey should have actually stopped, rather than dinging their entitlement and shouting at peds. I would not call these nice, but maybe 'the best we will ever get from cyclists'

    • @raithrover1976
      @raithrover1976 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@wibbley1I suspect you're guilty of a bit of confirmation bias here. I live and work in Edinburgh and own both a car and a bicycle and I personally find more bad behaviour from motorists than from cyclists. Behaviour tends to get worse as the roads empty in the evening where drivers travelling at 50mph where they should be doing 30 or even 20 is commonplace.

    • @wibbley1
      @wibbley1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@raithrover1976 Not sure about confirmation bias. I just use my own observations.
      We see in these clips, that a ped with right of way actually crossing on a zebra, stops to let the bike pass, as they are so used to seeing bikes refuse to stop for anyone or anything. So it makes it to a 'nice' cycling video as for once the bike actually obeyed the road traffic act.
      Then we have the bike coming round the corner and dinging their entitlement and then shouting at the peds!!!
      And Ash thinks this is 'nice'!!!
      Had it been a motor vehicle sounding it's horn, I'm sure Ash would have treated the situation far differently.
      I think the bias is from bike riders. They will never criticise or let other bike riders be criticised, instead defend them with what-ever feeble excuse they can.
      As in your case, your immediate (and all bike riders) response is to somehow try to justify bike rider's lawlessness by blaming speeding motorists!!!
      How does a speeding motorist in Edenborough compel all bike riders to jump red lights?

    • @raithrover1976
      @raithrover1976 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@wibbley1 My point about speeding drivers is about hypocrisy. People who jusify hating cyclists because they run red lights (I don't btw) are usually drivers who think nothing of speeding. Demonstrably, speeding causes more danger to other road users than cyclists running red lights.

    • @wibbley1
      @wibbley1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@raithrover1976 The only hypocrisy I see is from bike riders.
      When ever Ash does a bike tube and it is then filled with comments agreeing that the bike riding was atrocious, it is followed by a pile-on from bikeys using any and every mealy-mouthed excuse to defend them.
      As an example, I read an (on-line) article about the two wheeled menace in the Greenwich FOOT tunnel. Rather than bikeys agreeing the lawbreakers should be prosecuted, the comments were 'well cars go where they are not supposed to' as if this somehow justifies lawless bike riding.
      How in any way does another road user breaking the law give any mitigation for a bike rider to do so?
      Now we come to Ash's car driving videos. Here, other motorists will do the opposite of bikeys, they will pile-on to the bad motorist condemning their actions. Not once have I seen a comment 'well bikes jump red lights, so that car should be allowed to'

    Nice to see some good responses to emergency services. Typically we look for 2 signs when trying to progress through traffic on emergency response, eg pulling into the left, indicating or slowing down. Sadly it is my experience that cyclists often give no indication to emergency vehicles such as this. Often I am looking after a cyclist by not overtaking in a tight area, but the cyclist makes no effort to allow me to pass safely, or indication that they are aware of my presence. They look straight ahead and continue pedalling. Simply stopping as far to the left as possible, even standing on the pavement if possible, putting a left foot down and looking at the emergency service vehicle gives really nice clear communication and would allow best flow both for the emergency service vehicle and the cyclist. I wish I would see it more than I do!

    • @wibbley1
      @wibbley1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm surprised a bike would even pull over, to be honest. As for signals, I cannot recall ever seeing a bike rider give a hand signal.
      It is about time we had full mandatory training for all people wanting to pedal on the road. It should of course include tuition on how to respond to emergency service traffic.
      But of course with all this eco-wokey-cokey, it will never happen.

I really didn't want to spend the next 5 minutes moving house to house behind it or trying to squeeze through just next to it during one of the stops. But it happened to be positioned perfectly where there was a nice low curb and no recessed house entrance to pass. I think there is no way to cycle past those safely because a person could step out without me first seeing the door start to open. Not enough time to stop. But here it looked safe enough.

    In Primary School, we used to have to study the Highway Code, and were regularly tested on it. Obviously we weren't learning to drive, and it wasn't part of Cycling Proficiency (although we could do that). Probably deemed to authoritarian and impinges on their human rights to be taught how to cross the road safely.
      We now live in a world where the motor vehicle is demonised and peds are allowed to step out into the road without looking.
      All responsibility for the safety of peds and bikes has been passed to the motorist & should they splat a ped or bike who has suddenly moved into their path with no warning, it is of course the motor vehicle's fault.

Outside of the question of legality, I think it was done safely and appropriately since the cammer didn't know how much longer the bin lorry was going to be parked there, and squeezing under the cabin even if it's stationary wouldn't be advisable.

    Yes too many cycle over zebra crossings when pedestrians are crossing or waiting to cross.
    Yes I would have waited in the side road for the emergency service vehicle to pass.
    The pass on the pavement was fine, it was the only safe option for the cyclist to make progress, unless the driver waves them by.
    I often ride on very narrow single track roads and have on many occasions turned back to a passing point when it is not possible or safe to pass an oncoming vehicle.

    7:29 This is how I feel it should be done.
    I have seen plenty of clips where a vehicle is wanting to turn left only to be stopped by multiple cyclists passing on the left. This can be a real problem on single lane streets where a vehicle being unable to turn holds up all the traffic behind them due to being unable to pass.
    If cyclists maintained primary position in the lane and follow the vehicle instead of passing best flow is maintained as everyone is taking their turn.

      Agreed and the rider in the clip slowed down and appeared to use the pavement as a last resort upon seeing the gap, or lack of. The speed was kept slow until back on the road
      Where I am we have a few cyclists that prefer the pavement over using the roads and despite some paths being narrow will always stop for pedestrians. Those that wish to go faster and take their chance on poor infrastructure will use the road
      All quite amicable here except for the usual impatience from some on the road (drivers, riders and pedestrians alike) but unfortunately it doesn’t matter where you are there will always be that minority on the road

      Especially since the cyclist first went to the right in order to position themselves behind the vehicle which hadn't actually passed the lane he was in.
      Pretty sure the cyclist was walking the bike as well meaning they weren't going fast.
      From the speed of the police vehicle I am pretty sure it was driving straight down the left lane. Watch carefully it passes at 90 degrees to the give way markings. This means the cyclist crossed the lane the police vehicle was using. I'm guessing the cyclist was taking advantage of the lack of traffic due to other vehicles slowing down and stopping further up.

    Lots of good sensible cycling, remember always to say thanks to pedestrians and cars when necessary, this has a positive trickle down affect on behaviour. All pedestrians have priority at all times, annoying as that may seem. Always assume cars will turn across you. Drop your speed, in cities particularly, going over 20 mph exponentially increases risk. Governments should introduce on the spot fines for riding on pavements, jumping red lights, fines should start of low for first time offences and then ramp up. All cyclists should be visible and have some kind of registration to be on the roads. There are far too many time/cost based hire bikes causing problems in cities, this needs to be addressed quickly.

    I'm going to suggest that clip #1 was only a non-incident because the car driver didn't hear or chose not to respond to the expletive. In my experience, people can fly off the handle very quickly when confronted with an angry shout, even if they should be aware they are at fault. I appreciate the cyclist's frustration and I've done worse in the past, but I've also been involved in some very nasty and regrettable confrontations because I chose to voice my displeasure. IME it's better to forget it and move on - and if I've done well enough to predict and prepare for the outcome in advance, I'm neither surprised nor angry when it happens.

    1.03 all bike riders that I see in just 'blast' though pedestrian crossings.
    When they are finally governed and have to wear visible registration markings, then finally we may see an end to the cycling menace.
    1.20 what would have happened if it were a motor vehicle and they sounded their horn? Probably a pile in saying that peds have priority & the car should have waited. So surely bike should have stopped & not dinged their entitlement.
    2.02 Supposedly, peds have priority on the road and so traffic should stop if a ped wants to cross.
    So why does the bike not stop to let the peds cross?
    7.19 had this been an exit on a roundabout with a car driver, Ash would be jumping up & down saying that the peds have priority and the car should stop (risking a rear-end crash)/. Surely bike should have given way to the peds.
    At the same 7.19 a motor vehicle would have been expected to perform an emergency stop. I'm sure if this situation occurred on a driving test & the pupil sounded their horn & shouted, rather than stopping, they would have failed their test.
    7.40, Never happened to me. The knobbies undertake anyway & get all upset when I turn. Get it every day.
    8.21 everyone has to get in & out of their drive or parking space. Almost every motor vehicle understands this and will give space to the manoeuvring vehicle, I have yet to be doing similar and have a bike wait, they just carve round the waiting vehicle, pass inches from my bonnet & shout abuse. Again, a regular occurrence in London, for me.
    8.55 yep typical bike rider, refusing to ever stop or give way. Anybody could have stepped out from their house onto the pavement & not expected knobby on that ridiculous contraption to be entitling along the pavement.
    It seems there is still one rule for bikes and another for all other traffic. Even Ash's comments seem to reinforce this.
    I wonder how Ash's comments would differ if the videos were from cars.

    I disagree with your blind spot take on the first one. This is an excuse you make for drivers too often. Most lilkely reason is the driver did not take extra care because the sun was in their eyes. Drivers don't seem to be aware that when the sun is in their eyes they should take extra care at all times, especially when they are arriving and leaving intersections. You would do well to remind them of it. Too many cyclists have been killed or injured because of this basic issue it seems driving instructors don't warn them properly of.
    Other thing is cyclists should call out to pedestrians who step into the road without watching. There is nothing considerate about not warning a pedestrian who is inattentive, assumes that no sound means no vehicle or is just goggling their phone.
