    I think I've learnt three things from your videos. 1. When I'm out about, I should assume I'm on camera. 2. I can't drive, but even as a pedestrian who only crosses the road at zebra crossings or one with lights, I need to be much more careful. Just because I have a green nan doesn't mean that the car is going to stop. And 3. The truly mad things people will do to save themselves 20 seconds on a journey.

It reminds me very much of when I run a long distance race and am just focused on getting front of the person in front, and then the next person, then the next person. One thing with the kind of situation at around 1:05. If I come up to a set of red lights and I see the vehicle ahead has stopped having "overshot the line", I will leave sufficient space for that vehicle to reverse back behind the stop line. And if such a vehicle is a van of some sort with no direct view from a back window, I will stagger my own car so that I am visible in it's driver's side mirror. I've had several cases whereby carrying out these actions, I have indeed provided the vehicle in front with an escape route to reverse. This technique is also useful if the vehicle ahead blocks a side street, a Keep Clear or similar.

    That overtake of the cyclist at 5:46 and 6:10 is an all too common sight and only a few days ago I had one like the second example only it was across hatched markings for a junction, with traffic approaching and then followed by solid white lines. The impatience of some is unbelievably shocking.
    I have had cyclists say thank you to me for stopping when someone does a poorly timed overtake like in the first one. I hear a mix of Ogmios and Ashley when it happens “Not a problem, making it a non event so we can enjoy a beautiful day”
    As for “Didn’t See or Didn’t Care”, I have had a few recently where they did see but took so long in processing or getting moving that what they saw was no longer valid. So for those I have “They looked, they saw, they forgot”

      That's Hermiston Gait roundabout in Edinburgh. Four lanes on entry, three exits from the roundabout including a tricky third exit where you then have four lanes of which two join the bypass Eastbound and two stay left going up to a roundabout. @@kenbrown2808 Actually you've reminded me. One time I was on my way to one of my (numerous) cross border trips into the US. I had decided to take one of the quieter border crossings to the east in what's known as the Fraser Valley, BC. I had this car ahead going quite slow on the two way road for miles and couldn't overtake. But I kept a very respectable distance behind as I always do. Just as well I did because when we got to the border, it became evident that the driver was a Canadian border guard, on their way to work! Now of course, when you cross the border into the US, you are "greeted" by US customs. It's only coming back to Canada that you deal with Canada Customs. However, I couldn't help wondering that had I misbehaved on the roads, would the then off duty Canadian officer have made a note of my plate number and entered it into their system for me to have a "more detailed" inspection upon my return to Canada and maybe for a few more crossings in the future, regardless also of which border crossing I may use. And perhaps they'd share that information with US Customs for me to be sent into what's known as Secondary Inspection on future trips into the US. 🇺🇲🇨🇦

      The road rage was inexcusable. However, that section of road is really constrained in design due to the river and buildings and very confusing if you've never gone through there before. It also got a redesign a few years back (ok, 2017, but that feels like not long ago), and if anyone's still using in-car GPS maps that haven't been updated in a while, it'll be telling them to do really funky stuff. If you want to follow along on a map, the clip starts on the A229 next to All Saints Church in Maidstone. Have a quick scroll towards the 'roundabout' over the water, and see the directional arrows that are everywhere due to the bypass lane they put in! One of the few sections of road I'm super glad I never have to travel across again.
      To give anyone a bit of an insight, from the clip start you have that sign that shows you which lanes go where. Other than the rightmost lane that takes you back around the one-way system, the left two lanes actually go the same place, and you get a further opportunity to get into a more appropriate lane further down the road. To REALLY confuse things, even if you get stuck in the leftmost lane, you can still go the direction of the other lane by just using the roundabout section of the next junction rather than the bypass section. There's almost no reason at all, ever, to jockey for position as you come past the church if you want to continue along the A229.
      Poorly designed roads, poorly driven, and a poorly thinking raging driver to top it all off.

    7:28 Also not particularly good cycling. 7:28 is the time at which I would have started slowing down. 7:31 is the time at which they almost collide. While only one of the two parties emerged without properly giving way, both would have had 3 seconds to avoid the near collision.

    • @DemiGod..
      @DemiGod.. ปีที่แล้ว

      The cyclist was doing about 20mph in the wet. The highway code gives stopping distance as 4 seconds in the wet. A bicycle takes alot longer than a car to stop, particularly in the wet. You would have stopped in 3 seconds?

    • @Pystro
      @Pystro ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DemiGod.. That doesn't seem like 20mph to me. More like 10 mph. I fail to reach 20mph (or whatever speed cars actually do in a 20 zone), and that seems considerably slower than what I usually do. I don't know if I would have fully stopped within 3 seconds (mostly because I don't know the slope of that road).
      But none of that really matters. The main fact that I wanted to point out is that there is *no* slowing visible for the basically the whole 3 seconds. In fact, the front wheel keeps wiggling as if the cyclist continued pedaling. I know that I would definitely have slowed more than that.
      Even slowing a tiny bit would have taken the cyclist out of arriving at the same point at the same time.
      And finally, what the highway code says is the worst case. If it's wet, it can alternate quickly between "puddle" levels of wet and "merely damp" levels of wet, and the difference often difficult to tell (especially on camera or looking into the sun). And you never know how well someone else's vehicle performs. So the figure given in the highway code tells you "assume it's this much, because that's the worst case", so that you can give others enough space to account for that.
      The car should have assumed a stopping distance of 4 seconds for the cyclist (assuming that 20mph estimate is correct), not knowing what the actual stopping distance would be.

    At the mini roundabout (prior to the fuel station) the 'body language' of the viewer's car gave the impression of turning left, because they - correctly - went round the implied roundabout. Would it be confusing to traffic emerging from the filling station if the viewer instead made a simple right turn, cutting across the usually-present white dot/circle? Worth noting that I was already at the speed limit, as it’s a super awesome downhill. I hit the brakes and backed off when they went for it just in case. @@shm5547 Yes you may remember (if you saw his video) on the one about merging in turn (merge none the less) he asked for clarification on this one and the DVSA came back that no one has priority over the other.
      Rule 259 "You should give priority to traffic already on the motorway" also reads as ambigous as to me give way and give proirity are one and the same so this also reads to me as different as to their reply to him about the merge in turn.

    • @shm5547

      @@rustydusty2992 the wording is similar for the advisory normal roundabout markings, where it says something like 'give priority to traffic circulating on the carriageway of the roundabout'.
      Those roundabout markings are not a mandatory give-way. So it becomes a bit of a merging situation, with priority to vehicles already on the roundabout.
      Unfortunately, some people think that having priority on a roundabout or on a motorway means they can drive aggressively, at speed and close gaps etc. when traffic is reasonably trying to join.

    If any of the drivers is going to face prosecution, I vote we prosecute the last one. That is absolutely criminal. Imagine if the innocent driver hadn't been able to stop in time it would have been a head-on collision, with at least 2 dead! This is dangerous and careless driving. Driving ban, unlimited fine and prison time! Ask the BBB (Bald Belt Barrister) for advice

    At 2:20. I think the cammer was as much at fault as the other driver here. There was no reason at all for the slight jink to the left before turning to the right. That jink to the left must have made it look like the car was heading around to the left. Who actually has right of way here anyway - it it not marked out as a mini roundabout. Great awareness from the passenger though.

      There is a general principle that you always give way to traffic from the right, whether there are markings or not. I wouldn't have moved until I knew exactly where the cammer was going.

      I sent this clip in. Just to confirm, both cars did pass the first stop line when the lights were on green but were then queuing to turn right and didn't make it through before it went red again (you can see the lights changing at the very start of the clip). So while it's courteous to leave it clear while queuing, they technically did no wrong as they entered it when the light was green.

    Re at 5:38 "You should only be happy to overtake a cyclist if you would be happy to overtake a car in the same scenario". Very true, though there's also the situation where you can legally overtake a cyclist over solid white lines providing they are not going more than 10 mph and of course providing it's safe and with sufficient sight lines.

I still find it strange that the highway code chooses to list specific things you may cross the line to overtake; for example pedestrians, parked trailers, skips, debris, road kill, and countless other hazards aren't technically covered by that wording.
