- How to repair Samsung refrigerator ice build-up and water leak problem.

My double door (French door) Samsung refrigerator was leaking water inside the fridge, and it was collecting and pooling underneath the bottom drawer. I also noticed frost and some ice build-up on the back wall of the refrigerator. I found out that this is a common problem in Samsung refrigerators and in many different models of Samsung refrigerators.
THERE ARE 3 DIY SOLUTIONS THAT COULD HELP FIX Samsung refrigerator (model RF263AEBP) problem with ice or frost build-up and water leaking under the bottom drawer:
#1: The first and the easiest thing you should do before anything else is to see if you have a clogged drain tube, and you can get to the drain tubes from the access panel located in the rear of the refrigerator at the bottom. Once you open up the access panel, you will see two drain tubes, one for the freezer (on the left) and one for the refrigerator (on the right), and these allow the water to run down into the drain pan (or drip pan or drain tray or drip tray) where it evaporates. If the nipple that fits at the top of the drain tube is clogged, you need to clean that out.
This will cost nothing and is super easy to do. For some of you, this will solve the problem. Mine was completely clogged, but cleaning the drain tube didn’t fix my problem.
#2: If that doesn’t work, then you might want to try installing a bigger drain clip, which is located behind the panel on the back wall of the refrigerator. First, I unplugged and thawed the refrigerator overnight. Depending on the model you have, the locations of the screws that you need to take off to take off the panel on the back wall of the refrigerator are going to be different. For model RF263AEBP, there are 3 screws at the bottom and another screw behind a tab at the top. You have to be careful not to pull out the panel too far because it is attached to the back wall via some wires in the upper left corner.
According to a lot of youtubers, the original, manufacturer-installed drain clip that is attached to the heating element needs to be replaced because it is too small and inadequate to melt the ice and guide the flow of the melted water down the drain hole. A larger replacement drain clip is readily available from numerous online vendors. Many TH-camrs recommended this, so it might work for some of you. To my great disappointment, installing a new drain clip did NOT fix the water leak problem for me. It didn’t even help the slightest bit. Since the part was really cheap (~$5), I didn’t waste a lot of money on a part that didn’t fix the problem.
#3: Last but not least, what worked for me finally was replacing the temperature sensor, which I’ve read can go bad more often than you’d think. It is also located behind the panel in the back of the refrigerator and I used a screw driver to pry the sensor out of the bracket on which it was mounted. It was a real drag to have to completely thaw the refrigerator overnight with the doors open and then disassemble the panel in the back of the fridge for the second time! So, my recommendation for anyone trying to fix this problem would be that they order both the drain clip and a new sensor, and replace both at the same time because both parts are inexpensive and it’s not worth the time to put everything back together only to have a go at it again. After I replaced the temperature sensor, I noticed that the frost was no longer forming on the back panel and there was no water leak.
In summary, any one or combination of the following 3 steps could fix the issue for the vast majority of cases:
1) Clean the clogged drain line or drain tube
2) Install a bigger drain clip
3) Replace the temperature sensor (also called defrost sensor)
In my case, I needed to clean the drain tube and replace the temperature sensor. The drain clip wasn’t a source of the problem nor a solution.

Thank you for this video. Our large lower drawer would not open properly and when looking behind and under we found a puddle and layer of ice. With your video and one other we first pulled out the drain tube in the bottom back and found it to be plugged. Once it was removed there was a drip of water seen coming out of the drain so perhaps that is solved. We will keep an eye on it and if it should build up water again we will pull the inside back and replace the parts that you do in this video. $8 for the two parts on Amazon so we ordered to have on hand. I find it very interesting how this all works. Also while in the drain area we cleaned the fins and cleaned as much of the gunk out of the drain basin as possible. One way is to take a paper towel, fold in half and slide it in to the water and "wick" it out. Another way is to use a wet dry vac and one of those crazy multi tube things. On Amazon the are called "Attachment Tiny Tubes" you can divide the tubes and stick a few into the basin. Cover the remaining tubes with your hand to improve the suction. We we able to remove most of the water and yuckie stuff. Our Samsung is 12 years old.
I had the infamous Samsung fridge leaky drain issue too. Your video added what others didn’t. The drain at the bottom of the fridge. Mine was plugged solid and I may not have known about it until I saw your video. Of course I also I had ice build up all around the drain hole of the coil behind the panel. I did the job today. I admire people like you. You're comfortable with "learn as you go" and stubbornly prevail against the "can't fix it yourself" corporate cabal. So the cord is a little long. Nice job. A tip from an Appliance Tech. This issue is caused mainly by the duckbill inside the drain tube drying out . I replace BOTH the drain tube for the freezer and the refrigerator.
Before replacing the drain tube for the fridge , pull the old tube off and flush the drain system from inside the refrigerator by pushing hot water down the drain hole under the evaporator using a turkey baster.
The freezer drain you don't have to flush but replace the drain tube.
If the old duckbills are not dried out but are still nice and soft, then you don't have to replace the drain tubes just clean the them out like you did. I always find them dried out though

Yup. After 10 years duckbill was solid shut and shattered when I tried to flex it. Apparently water backed up and caused ice blockage. Fortunately replacement part is revised. Then had to go inside and do the documented dance ... shelves out, unclick bottom shelf, pull panel starting at bottom, disconnect, turkey baster with almost boiling water. replace clip with longer version, reassemble, pray it works.
@@rgrams1 Is it working? I replaced the clip with the longer version a few months ago and it only made the problem worse. I just checked the duckbills and both were totally dried out (how delightfully ironic) and a LOT of water came out of the fridge side. I'm hoping this will solve the issue but I remain pessimistic until proven wrong with this stupid fridge. What purpose do the duckbills serve? I just broke them off and reinstalled the drain tubes, which are now completely obstruction free. Is it really necessary to get new ones?
@@masongregory6913 The duckbills just close off the tubing to keep warm air from entering the fridge. I am guessing it doesn't make much difference. Unrelated, several months later the freezer section would only get to about 20 degrees. The Samsung is now history and an LG took its place. Much quieter and repairs look easier with ice maker in the door held in with just 2 screws. Not important now but in 3 years ... probably.
I’m very close to getting rid of Samsung. Mine is so frozen I can’t get the cover off the coil. These issues have been occurring since at least 2012 from what I’ve seen.
Considering all these new appliances are built to fail after about 10-15 years or so. This is a great video to get a little more life out of your refrigerator. Good job.

I did not realize there could be other issues as I just seen your vid now. So I am hoping replacing the clip will resolve the issue if not then I will have no option but to follow the rest of your steps. I should say though that sensor tube is clear in my case and there is no water in it. Any who, I thought to thank you for the vid as it was the most informative one for the same issue on youtube. Great Video. Slight correction. The purpose of the drain clip is not so much to guide the drain water to the hole but more to conduct heat from the heating element to the drain tube opening to preVent or melt any ice build up in the drain hole

No it's not on all the time, only during defrost, which comes around on most refrigerator every 8 hours.

Thanks for the extra detail! I was wondering how to remove the connectors before I started disassembly. Probably does not matter, but others removed the old clip and actually installed the new the other way around. Wish me luck!
Richie, removing the old clip would be better than not removing it but I didn’t want to take the chance of damaging the heating element while trying to remove it. The key is to make sure that the new clip makes good, solid contact with the heating element. It doesn’t matter which way it gets installed (just like toilet paper rolling out from the top or the bottom doesn’t matter). But you need to make sure the arms of the clip make good contact with the heating element. Please let me know if replacing the clip works for you. It didn’t work for me (didn’t fix my problem) but it did work for others. Good luck!
@@KYKCreations I believe my problem was the solidified duckbill rubber valve on the drain tube on the backside that backed up the water till it got high enough to freeze. Replaced with the redesign drain. As in your video disassembled from the front, thawed out the ice dam with near boiling water and a turkey baster. Removed the clip carefully so pieces would not fall into the drain. Put the new clip on securely the same direction as you did. It has only been a day but so far so good. If the issue was the temperature sensor it would only take me 10 minutes to disassemble and replace now that I know how to do it. Thanks for the help!

this is a great video and well done. Only thing I would suggest is if you're going to do all that work removing the panel, you probably should remove the old drain clip while you are there. I'm not saying that's why the fix didn't work, and I have no evidence or thought of why it would be bad to leave the old clip, but just my OCD would say take the extra 30 seconds or so and get the old one off so the new clip can make a really good, clean connection with the heat coil. I'm sure after it was all done you probably had that thought at some point too, we all do haha. I have done this process once for my fridge (just the heat clip replacement) and now I have to help my grandpa do it to his fridge as well, but it worked for my fridge! I came back to youtube for a refresher and this helped remind me the steps, so thank you!
Thank you for the comment! It's really helpful to know that just the drain clip replacement can fix the issue for some folks. I didn't have any concerns about putting the new clip over the old clip because aluminum is an excellent heat conductor and I made sure that the new drain clip made really good contact with the heating element at both ends as well as with the old drain clip. When the new drain clip didn't work for me, I knew that something else was the source of the problem for my case.

I didn't see any problem with 2 heating clips as long as there is good contact with the heating element since it might increase the ice melting surface.
Thank you KYK. This video helped me tremendously. Now that I have completed my "water in the frig" repair I will add a couple of comments. The aluminum part that you said was a guide for the water to find the drain, I am pretty sure is a heat conductor to melt the ice build up around the mouth of the drain. The replacement part is generic and will fit many of the Samsung refrigerators which is unlike the temperature sensor of which there are many different ones.
The only problem I had that differed from your experience was that the back panel was much more difficult to remove. In my case there was a sheet of styrofoam insulation that had two sided tape around the edges which adhered it to both the refrigerator and to the panel I was trying to remove. We finally solved the issue but using a plastic spatula intended for making crepes along the edges of the panel. The spatula was longer than the plastic putty knife I was using before realizing the problem.
I also measured how deep along the drain the ice dam was in it was about six inches. I found using a heat gun was too hot and use hot water from the sink to do the job which took about an hour.

I hope trying the other fixes work for you. People have commented that replacing the temperature sensor didn't work for them, but you might as well try it since the part is so inexpensive to buy. It worked for me. Good luck!

My Kitchenaid does the same thing. I think it is worth keeping a $10 water alarm in the bottom of your fridge so that you will immediately know when the drain is frozen and water is not going down the drain.

I didn't know for sure. I just tried it because the part was so cheap and replacing it was east to do. As for the refrigerator, it has wheels at the bottom so I was able to pull it out and push it back in all by myself (and I'm not a strong person).

Hi there, thanks for the video, mine is a side by side leaking water and forming ice under bottom drawers on both freezer and fridge sides, checked both drains but there not clog, installed clips on both sides but still leaking you think the temp sensor could be the cause of this?
Hi ti10to, It's hard to say whether or not the temp sensor could be the cause of your problem. For my fridge, a malfunctioning sensor was indeed the cause and when I replaced the sensor, the back wall of the fridge no longer formed a coat of ice as it used to before. Do you see a think coat of ice forming on the back of the fridge? If not, something else might be the cause.
Nice video. You should remove the old clip so you get more surface to surface contact for thermal transfer. Any air gap creates a thermal break...........if the heater does not heat the clip hot enough.

Hi Lisa, for my fridge the real problem was the temperature sensor. I needed to replace the sensor to fix the water problem, and the fridge is holding up really well so far without ice build up or water pooling issue any more. Now, the drain clip over the old one should be fine as long as you make sure that the arms of the new drain clip make very good, tight contact with the heating element.
@@KYKCreations how did you realize it was the the temperature sensor the problem and not the drain clip over the black metal at the bottom? How can you which issue you had? I have water buildup too
@@fridafrancisco2753 It was just trial and error with the simplest solution first. I saw many TH-cam videos suggesting that unclogging the drain tube at the nipple or installing the bigger drain clip will fix the problem, so I tried those but they didn't work. Then I researched the internet and read articles that said temperature sensor often stops working, so I replaced it and this was the solution for me. For some people, it might still be a different problem that's causing the water build up.
Great video. I replaced the fan which wasn't working, put the same clip as you to direct water into the drain hole and replaced the sensor. It stopped cooling at all although the compressor was wirkin and it did start to ice up again. I took the new sensor out and put the old one back. It is working a bit but staying around 16° on the display. The new sensor didn't seem to fit as well as the old one. I am wondering if that was the readon my repair didn't work. Please tell me the model # of your sensor. THANKS.

Then few days later the refrigerator indicator numbers were flashing and the freezer numbers were remained. The fan was blocked by the ice behind the plastic panel.
1. You may use the “force defrost” function to defrost it.
2. Manually defrost it.
3. For a long term resolution, you may install a Supco refrigerator defrost heater. Part number SH502 or SH201 would work for Samsung fridge.

I am replacing the temp sensor and noticed that the clear tube that the wire is inside of has water in it.Trying to figure out how to seal the end of clear tube so no more water gets in there.
Hi Cathy, That's exactly the same thing that I saw with my failed temperature sensor (water in the clear tube). My replacement sensor did not come with a clear tube, so I just replaced the whole thing without the clear tube, and it wasn't a problem for me.
I have a similar model and the leak is coming from the round filter in the top right. I have tried everything at this point I would be content with capping the water supply. Any suggestions appreciated.
It has nothing to do with the water supply. It is build of condensation that is not draining in a normal fashion
How to change filters on model
I'm courious as to how when the componets are remove or hidden from anything other than themselves, meaning nothing you can put in the frezzer or refrigerator could or would be able to get into the componets. Does the exit tube for melted water, become clogged and with what.
It can get clogged with bacterial growth or mineral deposits from hard water.

Did you actually test the old defrost sensor with an ohm meter? I tested mine at two different temperatures and it tested ok, but I replaced it anyway since the Samsung Service bulletin said if it’s been in ice it may be compromised. Just not feeling confident in the repair since it did test perfectly. I guess I will see…..
No, I did not test it. I figured the new, replacement part was less than $10, so it would be only time that I would have wasted if it didn't work out. So, I just went ahead and replaced it and, fortunately, the new sensor fixed the problem for me. If your old sensor tested ok, then it might be something else that's wrong with your fridge. There was a youtube video showing how to add additional heating element, which I might have tried if the sensor didn't work. After that, I would have just thrown in the towel.

Need help please - I changed the evaporator clip but it didn't fix the issue. Now I changed the temperature sensor. But water is pooling in the drain where the evaporator clip and in that area. Nothing is coming out at the back through the drain. I cleaned the back pipes too.
It sounds like something is clogging the flow of water from the drain out to back. With the refrigerator turned off, did you try just pouring some water down the drain (using a turkey baster) to see if the water comes out the back? You need to be sure that the nipple connected to the drain tube at the top of the drain tube isn't clogged.

Hi Glenn, you can buy the temperature sensor from a lot of different vendors online. I actually bought mine from ebay after searching for the cheapest one. It wasn't exactly right for my refrigerator model because it was too long, but it worked fine. I put a link for it in the description box, but you can also buy it from Amazon. .
Hello KYK Creations, did replacing the temperature sensor fix the issue permanently after 3 years?
Yes, it was fine with no water problem for over 3 years, but a few weeks ago the fridge started making a weird, loud whirring sound. It sounded like it was coming from the back. The refrigerator and freezer still worked fine but I had new tenants moving in to that house, so I just put in a new fridge for them.
My question to you is how did you know it was the sensor and nit the heating coil .
It could have been either, but I just tried fixing the sensor first because it was an easier job and also sensor failure happens more often than heating coil failure. It worked for me, but if that didn't work, I would have tried the heating coil replacement next.
How did you determine the temp sensor was bad?
I didn't really. I just went for it because it was a low hanging fruit: cheap part, easy to fix, and I had read that it fails more frequently than other parts.
Is the heating element supposed to fee hot to the touch or is it just not supposed to be covered in ice?
Heat element will be very warm to the touch(wet finger) when your FORCE DEFROST procedure is on. If you don't know how, check other videos.Easy to do. Good luck. (the ice build-up on Samsungs is usually in upper right corner and creates a noise when the fan hits it)
@@windsorpatb ok cause during normal operation after installing the new metal contact the heating element was not hot but I haven’t tried force defrost. The ice has returned after installing new piece I did notice though that the locking tab on the heating elements connector is broken. So I’m not sure if the connector is no longer working and needs to be replaced but I will try to force defrost to see if it is operable.
Replaced the clip and did not solve the problem. Replaced the sensor according to the LED panel diagnostic code but did not solve the problem, still lots of water below the deli drawer. I thing the problem is the double p trap under the heater clip. The P trap needs to be relocate to close to the drain pan.
I'm so sorry to hear that replacing the sensor didn't solve your problem. For my fridge, replacing the sensor fixed the water leak and it's still good.
I have a same refrigerator with you. Is it normal to have some water in the draining pan even after I changed the draining tubes? Also, I unplugged the refrigerator because the freezer door can’t be open. After I cleaned up all the melted ice and plug the refrigerator again, the freezer door got stuck again. Do you know what’s the solution for this problem? Thank you in advance!
Yes, it's normal to have water in the draining pan because it will take some time for the water to evaporate. I'm so sorry I don't have an answer to your freezer problem, but maybe one of the readers might know and could answer. Fingers crossed!

Hi Dee, I think the problem got fixed for good. When I had replaced only the drain clip, the ice build up formed again in just 2 days. So, I replaced the sensor. It has been almost 7 months since I replaced the sensor, and the refrigerator has not had any ice build up problem.
@@KYKCreations Thanks. For some extra info, I looked at TH-camr:Ben's appliance and junk. He had some interesting info on your type of frig. and some special links to a special heater that you wouldn't find out about easily.
Thanks for the info, Dee! I checked out his video, and I think it is a very nicely made video and informative. Instead of adding a second heating element though, I would first try to identify the defective part and get it replaced. In my case it was the temperature sensor that was broken, but I found out that other components could break down to cause ice build up problem (e.g., fan motor, original heating element, etc.)

@@KYKCreationsthat’s good to know. I only wished I had found your videos earlier. Our temp set panel is now no longer working and fridge is on its last leg. But I think this will be helpful as newer Samsung bespoke seem to have the same issue too.

Samsung should be ashamed of themselves for putting out these refrigerators after all this time and never addressing the problem. Cheap for them to fix this problem. I have this fridge and will NOT BUY ANOTHER SAMSUNG

Hi Keith, I am so sorry to hear this! Replacing the sensor seems to have fixed the problem for me because since I posted this video, I have not had a water leak problem with my fridge. But I have heard from others who have told me that changing the drain, clip, and sensor did not work for them. Please see my most recent reply to Flora Song for some more additional information on other fixes. Also, a viewer named Darrel Hazelwood left a long post about how he fixed his water leak problem. If my fridge leaks again, I will most likely try to fix it one more time, but that will the breaking point for me and then I will throw in the towel and just get a brand new refrigerator.

thank you so much . I have been aggravated by this problem for at least 2 years that drain line was the problem . I opened them up and installed a small piece of plastic straw into each side to allow more flow without restriction hoping this will eliminate the problem . "TOTALLY " I had previously installed the longer heat metal probe but knew there was something else that had to be done . God bless you for helping others with this problem. The drain lines can be accessed and cleaned in 1/2 hour even if you are older like me. no need to empty the fridge or freezer.
Why does Samsung make fridges???? They should just stick with making things they are good at...the silver lining in all of this is that by the end of us owning a Samsung fridge we will all be refrigerators technicians

I run my own home appliance repair business and have been doing his type of work for over 12 years I applaud you DIY attitude but you're misguided and misinformed.
On the drain tubes in the back, get a pair of scissors and cut that restrictive end off instead of just cleaning it. THAT is your main cause of this problem. I defrost these and cut the drain tubes all the time and never get a call back.
The clip you are referring to is a stupid engineer's idea to keep the drain on the inside from freezing. It conducts heat from the heater down the hole. It does not work because the drain is restricted or clogged.
The seonsor is for defrosting. It shuts of the defrost heater when it gets to a certain temperature so you're not heating up the refrigerator after the ice has melted. I've never had to replace that and clearing the drain always fixes the problem.

Huh? Changing the sensor actually fixed the problem for me, but this might not be the solution for everyone because different failures may be responsible for the ice build up problem.
@@KYKCreations one question I have for you. This all started from my mom's freezer not making ice. And I bought that stupid little clip and plastic piece installed it and after that this water issue started and still no ice (go figure right?) If I correct the drainage issue such as this video is talking about will it correct the ice maker issue as well? Or is the ice maker issue completely separate?
@@cecilepuckhaber1067 Instead of trying the method I've outlined in this video, please try to get the ice maker issue fixed first. That might correct the water leak issue as well. There are videos on TH-cam that show you how to fix the ice maker issue.
@@KYKCreations i did this repair and I did the ive maker repair months ago. However we just plugged the fridge back in and it's not getting cold. All I did was put the 3m strips behind the pan and at the bottom and did the drain plug thing. I didn't mess with any wires. Does it just take a long time to get cold? There was loads of ice behind the wall. Took a hairdryer and 4 hours to melt it all.
@@cecilepuckhaber1067 let me see if i understand the issue. you fixed an ice maker problem, so your freezer is now making ice, but you are getting ice build up in your refrigerator? so, you replaced the sensor as shown in my video and now your refrigerator isn't getting cold even though you freezer is making ice?
