Thank you for posting this. I wonder if there is any risk of damage caused by heat on the fridge's plastic since the metal piece is longer and going deeper inside the drainage.

Thanks for the help. The water actually did not drain properly. After letting the refrigerator sit for a few hours it’s still did not drain. I ended up jamming a wire hanger down the hall from both the back right side, drain and the top and that released whatever was stuck in there!

Hey Jeff, I followed the instructions as you stated, and it worked great. Unfortunately, the ice maker is not making ice now. Just a humming noise, but no ice. Water flows perfect. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Just a note, those ears on the sides of the replacement clip are meant to be bent around the heat tube. That way you ensure more contact area for better heat transfer and better defrosting. More than likely that's the reason some people are still having freezing issues.

Great video! I watched it and then ordered the clip from Amazon. When it arrived, I watched the video again and started unloading the refrigerator. The steps in the video were easy to follow, and I was able to access the problem area, quickly. I discovered that Samsung had left the little metal "tray" in the bottom of the drain rather bent and out of place. I don't think it mattered, but I was able to straighten it out. After melting the ice with a hair dryer, the water didn't drain. I had to run a piece of very flexible lamp cord down the hole. It took about four feet of wire but when I pulled it out, the water had drained. I don't know if there was more ice down there, or if something else had clogged the drain. I ran a little water down it, as you suggested, and heard it drain all the way down. Success! The clip went in just as expected, and I was able to button everything up. The whole operation took about 90 minutes - 30 minutes to fix the refrigerator and an hour to clean it, discard ancient mystery items, and then try to remember how my wife had arranged all the food. I'm sure I at least got the beer back in the right place.

Jeff; thanks for the tip! We’ve been dealing with this for a year. One thing I did that other would benefit from. Use a cup of HOT WATER. The ice build up in the drain will melt almost within minutes. The excess water that is in the catch/drip can be soaked up with a sponge. If needed, you can use a small flexible rubber tube to siphon out excess water that you can’t sponge out until the build up melts.

If I still end up running into problems, does anyone know if it would damage anything if I just turned off the water supply and turned off the ice maker? I'm willing to just occasionally buy a bag of ice when I need it if turning off the water supply and ice maker would keep this from continuing to happen, especially if it means I don't have to buy another fridge.

My 7 year old fridge has been doing this regularly since year 3, destroyed my flooring before I was able to catch it.
Another tip is to add extra foil insulation tape to the side and bottom of the back piece that is removed. After several removals to defrost, the original insulation gets pretty beat up.

Samsung, worse crap I have owned. Installed this part and after 3 weeks frozen up again but up in the cooling fins and all the way to the top by the fan. Also took the back off and checked the drain line it was fine. The part I installed appears to be working just freezing up elsewhere. 3 years of working fine. What causes this?

    • @bill3716
      @bill3716 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@msingerca Did you replace the panel properly? Is all the insulation in place? Did you reattach both wires before replacing the panel? If so, I would check the heating element and fan motor for continuity. If they are fine, I would also check the defrost sensor which is connected to one of the two wires you had to remove to get the panel off. The sensor is mounted to the element and measures it's temperature so the control panel came regulate how long to defrost the unit. The sensor costs about $20. Get the OEM sensor not a cheap knockoff and make sure it's the right one for your model. I found this out by watching a video of a repairman on a call for the freezing problem and he routinely swaps the sensors out. There are videos on how to test and replace all three. I'm not a repairman but I have the same freezing problem and have looked at a lot of videos and parts websites. Good luck.

I had previously replaced the defroster element because there was ice spilling out of the little holes on the front of the twin cooling cover - and I thought that would cure the problem, only to have a frozen lake develop continuously under the cool pantry. I ordered the part you identified and just finished replacing that ridiculous little element that Samsung had for keeping the drain free. I sure hope that this works as you said, because my next move is ordering a new refrigerator. But not before telling everyone I know about my experience with Samsung. Learned a great lesson in maintaining this fridge ... not cleaning the drain spout once a year caused huge problems. I want to thank you for this video. It put me on the path to repairing my crazy Samsung fridge (will not buy another Samsung fridge). I got the clip you recommended. My back panel was so frozen that I did not have the strength to take it off and I was afraid I would brake it. Neighbors to the rescue. Two wonderful men got it off the back. That is when I confirmed that the evaporator fan was bad also. Ordered that. But what my wonderful neighbor showed me is that gunk had built up in the drain line in the VERY NARROW opening at the bottom. See attached photos. This caused the complete drain line to freeze and froze up the line including the panel. Once the gunk was cleaned out and the drain line thawed, I was able to replace the evaporator motor and assemble the panel and fridge back together. Will roll my fridges out once a year, vacuum the back/inside, and clean /check the drain system. Lessons learned
I can't figure out how to add the pictures of the drain line and tip. If anyone can tell me, I'll add the pictures to help.

In addition, make sure to clean and drain water defrost line. It's most likely clogged and causes excess water/humidity buildup inside fridge. Easy access from back of the fridge, after sheet metal cover is removed. There are 2 or 3 drain tubes leading to drain pan; one or more of drain tubes is likely to be completely blocked with dirt and gunk. Good luck!

Part came in yesterday, I installed it and my refrigerator is working well again. As I write I have a bucket full of ice, in less than 24hrs.

Wow. I've been "fixing" this every 3-6 months by opening it all up, defrosting, and putting it back together. This is the first (hopefully) permanent fix I've found. Just ordered the new evaporator clips, and beyond excited to install them. Thank you so much. You likely just saved me from buying a new fridge.

Same here. I've had Samsung out 3 times now free of charge but it's crazy they've made no attempt to actually FIX the problem they just put a new back panel on and defrost. It will be interesting to see if this stops the top part icing up and blocking the fan as well.

@@GodronATX there’s an other useful comment I’ll see if I can’t tag you or wtv ! He talks about opening the back pannel and checking the drain pipes to see if any are not iced or clogged up with guck still!

    • @feversol
      @feversol ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@GodronATX this is because this ‘solution’ addresses the symptom, not the problem. The problem is the clogged drain hose that is accessed from the back of the refrigerator. There are two of them. On the right is the tube draining the refrigerator and the one on the right drains the freezer. At the top of those tubes is a hard white plastic connector that has a baffle inside it with two very small drain holes. Those holes get plugged up allowing water to back up into the refrigerator where it freezes. That part he replaced might help the drain from freezing but it doesn’t make much difference if that bottom drain hose is plugged. Water will still over-flow into the bottom of the refrigerator and freeze because that is the top of the freezer. When I grabbed those white plug connectors, the constricted area broke off which gave me the larger opening I wanted. Now, it can’t get clogged and back up into the refrigerator where it was freezing previously. I didn’t replace that small aluminum piece because I’m counting on water not backing up and standing long enough to freeze. I suspect the two pin holes in that drain was to allow the small amount of water that normally drips into that tube to pass while restricting the amount of outside warmer air from entering the refrigerator. But, those two pin hole sized holes, eventually get plugged with a small amount of rust or calcium. Make those holes larger and problem should be solved.

North entirely sure if only the black parts around should heat or everything. The black were cool to the touch but perhaps the sensor doesn't run it because it's 80 degrees in there due to defrosting,? The other issue is the cheap metal thingy actually had deteriorated and fallen off! I put it back as best i could since I need to get the food back in, but will order the part right away! Of course the line seems iced up too so using a hair dryer to try to defrost..

So I cut off about 1/4 inch of the length with wire cutters and it fit perfectly into the hole and over the coil. Plugged the fridge back in and it is cooling now and soon to be ready to put food back in it. My neighbor came over as I was putting the panel back on and was amazed. Service person replaced the defrost clip with a larger one and replaced the drain tube with a new one about six months ago to resolve same problem. Ice had already started building up after about 3 months. Repair person came today, did not disassemble the back panel to inspect, and said fridge needs a new back panel, since it has a new seal. This does not seem to make sense to me. Do you think it will help or be another wasted day off from work?

This was excellent! Your clear, step-by-step instructions helped me fix the problem in my own fridge! Thank you SO much!!! Who knew a $5 part would do the trick? I felt so proud of myself for fixing it! (Also shout out to TR Bowlin. Before his video and Jeff’s, I felt prepared to tackle the project.)
For people wondering, I defrosted for 18 hrs but also ended up putting a hair dryer on it for 10ish minutes because there was still a lot of built up ice.
Defrosting is the most annoying part of this fix. I did this when our fridge was mostly empty. We have a mini fridge so I put all our must stay cold item there (e.g., mayo, dairy items, etc.) and left other things that would be ok for a day or so on the counter. I was worried about the frozen stuff but my freezer stayed nice and cold with a couple of ice packs. I know this for certain because I had a container of ice cubes that were still perfectly frozen when I checked after everything was fixed.

We bought a home that had a Samsung ‘frig and we had a plate of ice form under the deli tray, just above the freezer unit. The prior homeowners left both the owners manual and the installation guide. One said to level the unit and the other said to slant it back ever-so-slightly, which is what I did. The 2nd thing I did was to turn off the energy saving function, which presumably would have the condensate removal function work to greater effect. I’m pleased to report that we no longer have ice build up problems!!!!

I love your video's. You give good explanations and are very clear. I'm having the issue of water under the fridge also. I first took the back off and checked the white tubes to make sure they were not blocked, which they weren't. BUT, there were 3 places for tubes but only 2 tubes connected. 2 white tubes on the right, and a black tube to the left. Not sure which one to change. We've already purchased the whole back panel of the fridge, styrofoam and all. All still leaking water to the floor and ice build-up under crispers (about 1/2 inch thick). Not sure what to do next.

This worked perfectly. Easy to follow. My only suggestion for those who cannot wait 24 hours for the ice to thaw. Hair dryer on HOT was necessary. For the actual drain I boiled water and then put a shortened/cut clothes hang with about 6 inches long then a bend of 3 inches or whatever. Pour the boiling water into a cup then the long end of the hanger in the cup to get the hanger hot and place it in the hole. I did this about 10 times and it kept moving further down until the drain was completely open. Refrigerator only off for 2 hours.

Great videos, but be fore warned that I still have to go back in about every 2 or 3 years to defrost the back panel and pull it out to inspect the drainage, even with the new part. Full air flow in the back interior of the frig is important. An overloaded frig with lots of stacked items against the back of the shelves is a possible cause. I used this video to remind me how to access the back panel every few years. I have a 2010 model with the same interior components and first encountered this problem in 2014. It's extremely sad that Samsung continues to produce refrigerators with this design flaw, as the motor and cooling seem to be very reliable. I will not buy another Samsung frig when this unit needs replacing as the simple nature of the defect speaks loudly about how inept the management is. A refrigerator is a big expensive purchase for many people. Samsung should be forced to have a big warning sign, "buyer beware".

Thanks so much for making this video. Mine iced up over 5 years ago and again 3 months ago. Both times called a technician. Now happened a 3rd time. This time I checked the drain tubes myself, they were clear and dry. Put all food in a cooler on ice and chest freezer. Couldn't get the panel off due to ice. Melted it with a hair drier in top vents taking care to not overheat things. Discovered I have the new aluminum part (from one of the techs), but water was not draining. Used a baster to siphon cold water out of drain and siphon hot water in/out The drain cleared. A snake camera showed the drain was still half blocked with ice about 6 inches down. Cleared with more hot water. Wrapped some copper wire on the heating element and set the wire about 7 inches in (fix suggested by other folks on Internet). Left the aluminum part as is. Now crossing fingers and wanting my half day back. Will be looking at other brands for all new appliances.

when I removed the panel inside my Samsung and melted ice, like you showed in your video, water from ice was just sitting there. Not sure why. I wasn't able to clear that pipe. I didn't turn my fridge off for 24 hours. just maybe 8 hours. Any idea how to clear that pipe? If this was an ice that was blocking water to go down, then my question is, what causes that water to freeze further down in the pipe?! I think, something is blocking water flow and I don't know how to clear it. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Hi Jeff. Thank you so much for your video. I was able to follow your video and successfully remove the back panel and remove all the ice. Unfortunately I did not have the time to wait for the heat conductor to come from Amazon so only a temporary fix.
I do have a suggestion for improved instructions on removing the back panel. It is too hard to peak around the sides and it wa difficult to feel for the electrical connectors. Couldn’t adequately shift the panel sideways so I thought to tilt the panel UP by pushing the top to the back corner. Worked great! Had a clear view and access to all the wiring.
    Please consider amending your video.

The Samsung service bulletin for this repair includes three items that will correct the freezing problem. It includes insulation strips on the backside of the metal panel, moving the coil thermocouple, and replacing the heat sink (this video). I would highly recommend doing all threes items. I also insulated the coil penetration at the top right. This is where the freezing starts to occur. I used HVAC pipe insulation and foil tape.

Thank you for this video Jeff!
I have the same fridge with the same problem. I went ahead and made your repair - the video made the process super easy. Unfortunately, within a few short weeks my back panel was frozen over once again. I dredged the internet for solutions. I defrosted the unit once again, I took everything I could apart and checked for continuity. Everything was in good working order. I even pulled out the fridge and cleaned the pipes along with everything else in the back. I also reset the fridge after I was all done. I even read about a trick about moving the defrost temp sensor to the other side of its original tube placement in order to active the defrost cycle a little sooner. Well, all my hard work paid off for six weeks. I was feeling so good about it too… but last night I discovered ice forming yet again in the crisper. The fridge is only six years old - and a new one isn’t possible at the moment. I’ve asked several repair folk to come out and no one will touch it.
Any last minute ideas or suggestions before I start manually defrosting this hunk of junk every two weeks for the next ten years???
    Thanks!
    Sean

I just posted my own comment but with the new better part I discovered I still had ice about 6 inches down the drain so somehow it was getting below freezing in that lower area. Not sure if it was from freezing downwards from the top of the drain, or starting from below. I had a sheet of ice below the collector pan, suggesting water was collecting under it (and freezing due to not enough heat exposure?). Maybe from the flange on the removable panel?

I bought one of those devices on Amazon. Three months latter same problem. So I took a solid copper wire about 1/8" and around 8" long and ran it down the hole and hooked it around the heating coil. Problem solved, works great now, perfect temperatures and no more ice build up. The problem was that ice build up starts further down the hole and works it's way up, so the copper wire takes care of that problem. Get a long wire and run it down as far as it will go and then cut it and make a u shape at top of wire and then compress it on to heating coil.

I had two excellent repairmen out on two different occasions, and although they banged out the ice and got it "working," neither one even charged me b/c they knew it wasn't really "fixed." Pretty decent of them. I then had a Samsung certified guy come out, and it was so clear even HE didn't want to fix it. He talked me out of it by saying how much it would cost, there was no guarantee it wouldn't happen again, etc.... cost me $100 just for him to grace me with his presence. His advice? Don't buy Samsung fridges, and oh yeah: always pay more for the extended warranty when you buy a fridge since you'll probably need it. Good grief.

Your video got me going in the right direction but for me it was not this issue causing the problem. Thanks to James comment below it was actually a lot easier. When I took the fridge apart there was standing water in the drain collector area but it was not frozen. Long story short I ended up taking the bottom back cover off and there are 2 Grey tubes on the right side (looking from the back of the fridge) that are drain tubes . When I removed the left tube it was clogged with some weird almost silicon substance. Unclogged it and water immediately ran out, about 1/4 cup and that was it. No problems since. I would try this first since it is so easy, if this does not work then try the fix in this video.

If you have this icing problem with water collecting under your crispers, the very First thing you should do is disconnect the power and check the drain tubes behind the outside panel in the bottom rear of your unit. Unplug the power. Pull the unit out from the wall. Remove the lower back cover. Have a small container handy and pull the drain hoses off. There is one for the fridge on your right side and one for the freezer on your left depending on the model. If water comes pouring out of the one on your right, you are in luck. It was just clogged and backing up. You can take apart and clean both tubes or get a better designed new replacement. If no water comes out, you've eliminated one possible cause after spending just a few minutes. I'm a diyer not a repairman and accept no liability. Just trying to help others.

If the drain is still blocked I took a little cup of really hot water and poured it down and then took a turkey baster and sucked the water in and out and then sucked it out and then put more hot water in and I did this about 10 times until the ice in the drainage tube was melted eventually I was able to pour the water in and it just gargled all the way down and drained very well. So give that a try if the drainage hose is still frozen and blocked up. Really hot water pour some in and then let it sit and then take the turkey baster squeeze it in and out in and out in and out to lmove the water around to melt the ice. It worked really well for me. Also I used a clothes steamer instead of a hair dryer so I wouldn't dry out any parts inside. on the ice that was still stuck in there even though I had unplugged the refrigerator for 24 hours.

That seems to be the issue with most. Replacing the drain tubes is the best thing to do with the parts I have in the description! Thanks For Watching!

Thanks for the video, Jeff! I'd been having this issue myself for a few years and have just been cleaning up the bottom of the fridge every few weeks. I'd seen another video awhile ago on the ice buildup inside the back panel, but nothing about the heat conduction pin back there or that there's a worthwhile replacement piece out there, so that info is greatly appreciated!

Jeff, great walk through video with clear instructions and recommended cautions. The item you linked is not currently available, but the part number led to several other options. Thanks for sharing your experience here to help everyone else! Kudos on the Sriracha and other hot sauces I see in your fridge door!
