It's rare to find a vid that exactly answers your question! Well done. The only two mods I made were sending only kik/snr/toms to the comp, because the cyms/hats/ovhd lost all definition. 2nd was I added a saturation bus, again for kik/snr/toms only.
Glad to hear this was helpful! Yeah, it's an eight year old video, so I would have done a few things differently with it if I made it today. Still, lots of latitude to adapt the process to your specific needs. Thanks for the comment!
Bookmarked and thank you! This was exactly the way I have been trying to set up Reaper for drum tracks, and learning the routing was giving me fits on other forums. Your plain-english demonstration was extremely helpful!
5:33 Okay so I was able to get the routing correct so that each sub track has each individual type of drum sound on it. However, when I solo the kick for example, and hit record, I get a recording of every sound I created in my drum machine (hats, snare) on that one kick track. I'm using Geist2. If you have any suggestions I'm all ears
i know i'm 9 years late, but i tried following your instructions and the sound only come out of the master bus if I turn the master send on, if i disable, nothing comes out, any suggestions?
Without seeing the specifics of how you routed everything, I can't really help you diagnose the problem. If you've routed the main track to the other tracks and then disabled master send on the main track, then you *should* still have audio coming out of all of the receiving tracks. Also, you didn't set the main track as a folder with the receiving tracks as child tracks, right? That will likely cause problems.
Very helpful video, I have to try these innovations. Viking can you write how I should do sidechain with bass track please. Do I need to just kick track send to auxilary compressor. Or rather, all the drums. Or maybe leveled all the drums and send the track,, drum comp,, to do sidechain compression ?
This is exactly how I do drums. Sometimes I do folders in the folders for doubling instruments or additional VSTs. Also, note that the midi "routing" track cannot be inside the instrument folder or you get a routing loop. When there is a loop Reaper mutes containing tracks and no amount of "send" routing will fix it. It does so without warning. It's super irritating, I say, if it can detect the feedback loop, it can inform you.
So before watching I had individual tracks each running their own drum program just so I could EQ etc everything differently. I feel like such a moron now. I can't thank you enough for this video.
Don't feel like an idiot! You found a way to get things done, and that's what matters. We all have things that we still need to learn and processes that can be improved. I'm glad the video helped!
Awesome. This is exactly what I was looking for! Btw, can I get a good drum comp track using ReaComp? If yes, can you tell me the preferred attack and release time for drum comp?
I know this an old video, but can you please explain why you would set up separate tracks for reverb and compression instead of just putting the reverb and compression in the main buss?
It allows for more control. You can blend the volumes of the separate tracks (like using the wet/dry knob if you used verb/comp as an insert,) you can also route multiple tracks to a single reverb or compression send. That way, you're using one instance of the effect instead of multiple. This lowers CPU usage, and also helps glue sounds together. My advice is to try it both ways and see what you like most. It's good to learn both methods, because you might end up in a situation later on that works better with the other method.
Noob questions. Is there a way to save this routing set up so that I don't have to manually set up the routing for every single mic track for every new project that I might start?
Sure! You can save individual tracks as templates, and also save projects as templates. If you want to save multiple tracks as a group, just toss them all in a folder track and then save that track as a template. Good luck!
By the way VG, would you consider also running down how you do your sends for guitar effects? I saw in one of your previous videos that you enabled and disabled sends. My situation is that I can't seem how to figure out how to do a send (or enable it) that won't double my guitar part due to having the Master Parent Send option clicked. I'm a 2+ year user of Reaper and not a total n00b, but there has got to be a better way than the way I'm doing it. Happy New Year!
VikingGuitar Much appreciated! I hope I was able to explain clearly what I meant. For example, I've got RH and LH tracking which are sent to a Submix with all of that in a parent folder. If I try to do a "Delay" or "Reverb" track for example and have the Submix sent to that - it doubles everything (as you clearly demonstrated in the video). I've been fiddling with it but I think I'm having a severe case of the "Derps" right now.
Mourning Pyre I think it might just be an issue of the mix level of the effect on the track with the verb/delay/etc. If it's any less than 100%, you'll get some doubling of the original dry signal.
Hey man! Need some help I did all the same steps and that work with SSD, but when I put all the "Mic tracks" 8' a folder all I can hear is the kick. Please help and thank you.
Haha never mind man! I was putting the mic trackin te SSD track itself and not a separate track of "Drum Mics". Irealized it as I got done typing this haha. Love this video really helped me!
Hi there. You'll want to add the EZdrummer VST to a track in Reaper. There should be instructions on how to do this in the EZdrummer manual. Best of luck, and thanks for watching!
dude it is not even possible to drag anything like that in current reaper, there is no "drag the audio------ " no. I have NO idea what to type in, or where to type it in, to get my track to send, or where to send it, how or where There is 'N.O' "CLICKING" the audio. theres no I/O button like that anywhere on anything.
Nate, you seem frustrated. Let me help you with that. REAPER has a number of selectable visual themes, some of which case use different icons. Depending on which theme you're using, it sometimes shows up as an alternate version of the image used in this video, with similar "I/O" text. It sometimes is labelled "ROUTE". It might not show up unless you grab the edge of the track list and extend it to the right, making the size of the tracks larger. However, there's another possibility, assuming that you're using the REAPER 6 Default Theme. If that's the case, here's a link to a post in the REAPER forums that describes how to bring it back. The forums are a great resource, in case you have future questions. forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=231893 FWIW, this post was on the first page of Google results for "reaper io button", about three down from the top.

What great video dude! You explanations are right on point. This was very helpful for me. Awesome content!!! I love Reaper. It is such a great DAW.
It makes me really happy that this old-as-hell video is still helping people out! I really appreciate the comment. 🙂
After all these years I finally understood how routing works thanks to you! Great video!
That's great to hear! I'm glad it helped.

One of the best videos I've seen about drum buss setup in Reaper. Outstanding, thank you!
Dude thank you. This helped so much. I was so frustrated with how parts of my drums were too loud but I only had the drum master track

This video is saving my sanity. Thank you infinitely for making this one \m/

VikingGuitar I see; that makes sense. I need to have the effect set to 100% Wet and then use the fader from there is what you mean?
I think we're saying the same thing. I'll do a vid tomorrow regardless. :-)
And save templates for all this stuff.

How do you get easy drummer connected to reaper

Top shelf! Thanks a lot!
Awesome tutorial! Thanks
Oh look, I'm watching this video... FINALLY
Why would you need to mix drums, Wes?
Whoa hold on now... I'm not done with the video! Dude... this is going to make my workflow so much better. My previous organization was kinda jumbled.
Much appreciated! Thank you!
Well done , I like it .
Cool lesson. Thx
Thanks!
THANK YOUUUUU!!!! OH MY GOSH... YES
Thank you!
Thank you so much.
realy thanks bro!
