Good stuff. I'm learning Reaper as a second DAW and your video helped much! BTW - The reason your compressor release time seemed to react slowly is probably because of your RMS setting (~20ms). The longer the RMS time period, the more samples get averaged together. Setting RMS to smaller time periods, or even 0, will yield a faster attack/release response. But it could also cause some distortion if set to low (depending on the track).
Awesome as always dude. I am learning a lot from you. My own mixes are getting better by the hour using your tips. If you can get into detail about getting a good bass guitar sound (using a live bass, especially a 5 string, because mine is really unbalanced across the strings).
Very nice video however, I am (and have been trying now for 3 weeks) to get a specific answer for a specific thing I NEED to do. I need to do side chain compression for the singular purpose of "ducking the effects of reverb and/or delay" on the vocal track while singer is singing, and releasing the effect "tail" when their is a break in the vocals. In laymen's terms I don't want the effect on the vocals while singing, but want the efffect at the breakes in vocals for the purpose of "dynanics." EVERYBODY that I have attempted to get answers from keeps going back to kick drum base side chaining. This is of no use to me as I'm doing acoustic guitar and vocals right now there is NO DRUM OR BASE. I use for my DAW Mixcraft 7 (cannot afford pro tools or reaper and am very happy with MC7 I have a multitude of compressor VST's but only one specifically can do side chain compression. That is reaper's realcomp. So exactly how do I set up to do the above? Please respond to only the question above...that is entirely all I need to know how to do. Thanks in advance and my apologies for sounding so cranky. I've lost nearly a month of production and submissions due to people referring to retro stuff that I do not do in the first place.
Martin Weeks Made a video for you. It's uploading now. Should be live in about 15 or 20 minutes at this link. :-) th-cam.com/video/KTHrCLmZHDI/w-d-xo.html
VikingGuitar Just clicked the link you provided me and it's saying it's a private video and I'm not allowed access to it. I've registered with subscribed already. Is it still uploading or is there something else I need to do?
Thanks for posting this video! Answered a lot of questions for me. I have another question though. What software did you use to make this tutorial? I can't find one that will allow me to record the screen, audio from Reaper and the narration at the same time. I'm on a PC and it looks like you are too. I've read that with a Mac this isn't an issue. Thanks!
+Don Clemons It's a combination of things. I'm using Bandicam for the screen grab and the mic input. With my setup, it won't also record the Reaper output, so I go into Reaper and tell it to record live output to disc. This will create a separate .wav file that I can sync up with the other video. Thanks for watching!

Dude, you just answered a question that I've had for a while, but never actually looked up. Thank you!!!
+VikingGuitar Anytime! :D
Thank you for this lesson Viking. It means a lot to me and I appreciate it.
Yours sincerely- Kris
Thank you for taking the time to explain all this! Happy New Year
