    Good job, you where very thorough, a lil tight on the back lash, (gets tighter when heated) but I understand the shim swapping, major pain in the .ss . Really liked the video, excellent information. Thanks.

    I'm in thr South....ughh need to build a gear up to 400 hp with an 8.8 I dagum guess.......I have a 96 Bronco rebuilt the ENTIRE frontend for death wobble but its the pinion bearing.....I need a long term hardened street/trail with longevity to it....Ive got too much invested....Dagum I would just pay you guys I have an f-150 with another shell.....The part of College I didn't finish......💔 Crush Dreams....GOD LOVE!

  • @cousineddy8717

    I have an 8.8 that was recently rebuilt. But, when you let off the gas, there is a loud howl. Its quiet otherwise. What is causing this? Backlash or pinion preload error? Or something else?

    • @Dragracetherapy
      @Dragracetherapy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally, That's pinion bearing related. It's possible the bearing preload wasn't set up correctly, or it's just a failed part. Could be carrier bearing, but in my experience I would definitely investigate both pinion bearings to start.

    • @cousineddy8717
      @cousineddy8717 ปีที่แล้ว

      Supposedly, it got all new bearings, races and gears. But, maybe wasn’t professionally assembled.

    When checking the pinion preload did u use the crush washer while checking it , I wanna rebuild my rear end in my foxbody but never done it before I’ve watch over 15 videos so far I get lost with the pinion because of the crush washer being a one time use

    • @Dragracetherapy
      @Dragracetherapy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, use the crush washer. You need to "sneak up" on the preload by tightening the pinion nut. This in turn is causing the washer between the inner and outer bearings (these bearings are tapered) to collapse or "crush”, bringing the bearings closer together in the housing. You are looking for a recommended tolerance between these two bearings which is measured by the rotational force or "tourqe" needed to turn the pinion.
      Let me know if this helps. If you would like, i could do a quick video on it too if you're still not quite sure.

    It is possible with a click torque wrench because the spec range is so big. 18in pounds to 26.

    • @halleffect1
      @halleffect1 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know, 2 years late but- the answer is no. you want a beam style wrench, and the lighter the better, like one calibrated in inch lbs.

    What to do if you didnt mark the bearing caps and dont remember their orientation? Great video btw!

    • @Dragracetherapy
      @Dragracetherapy  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You could try to assemble it with nothing but the Carrier and bearings/shims installed. Tq the caps and see if it spins freely and smoothly. If not try a different cap orientation. Worst case scenario is to take it to a machine shop and have it line honed

    I tried putting in a set of gears when I did the 5 lug conversion (CuZ I wAs AlreAdY iN ThErE), little did I know I was way over my head. I wouldn't even be surprised if we left the pinion shim out. We reused the pinion races with the new bearings. Didn't check backlash or gear pattern. Slapped it in with the old carrier shims drove it down the road, horrendous sound on the coast side. Brought it to a shop to fix it, they charged me a little over $500. I'm pretty sure the original pinion races were reused cuz on the coast side it still whistles. I've probably put 10,000 miles on em, I'm just gonna run them till catastrophic failure. But since then, I've done a lot more research and taken a class at community college on rebuilding manual transmissions/axles/transfer cases so I have a little better understanding. I'll give it another go eventually, but i'll probably get the book on how to do it as well
