Build a shield to keep debris from bonking you in the back of the head. Also some higher gears might make the blades go faster. More tire revolutions = more lawn mower blade madness.
Locking one axle would give you half the blade speed. Also, real brush hogs use pivoting blades on the ends of a spinning arm so things don't break when you hit a stump.
You may already know this but Bush Hog blades are mounted on the hub with a single bolt such that they swing freely. So if they hit something solid, they just bounce off and swing out of the way but the unit doesn't stop spinning. Then centrifugal force allows the blade to swing back out to resume cutting.

Smaller overall wheel tire combination will result in higher blade tip speed for a better cut. Change the rear end gears to 4.11 gears for MORE blade RPM. I also like the flail blades better for your safety.
@@skinnyWHITEgoyim, When the wheel is rotating the blades it's opposite of what your truck/car does. Wheel rotates 1 revolution & the blade (attached where the former axle used to reside) will rotate 4.11 revs. So the faster the wheels spin with a smaller overall diameter along with higher gear ratio will in fact create more rpms @ a given wheelspeed.
This is marginally more dangerous than my grandpa's brush hog off the back of an 8N (at least it had an overrunning clutch and, you know, a deck). (I still have the 2N he left me, though the mower went with the 8N. Great tractors.)
My 2N (which was the designation from 1942-1948 but is barely changed from the 9N) still has the 6 volt original electrical system too. Still starts pretty darn well.
The overrun clutch is between the tires and the turf. If the tractor stops too quickly the mower will continue forward and (hopefully) lift off the ground reducing the traction to keep pushing the tractor forward.
Yeah flail mower blades would be excellent for this setup and would make replacing blades much easier. Also looks like the speed of the blade is a bit on the low end, I'd make a cross and have a total of four cutting blades!
All the old farmers should be proud! This is how half of their attachments were invented! Sharpen that perforated angle iron up and get cutting! Nice Job!
pretty cool idea...I say flip the rear end over, do a 3 blade set up, and do some gearing using different sized pulleys and belts...I think it could become quite interesting.

I started gathering parts for making a papercrete mixer. Similar idea, but the pinion points up and spins a lawnmower blade inside of a tank for chopping and mixing the papercrete. Those actually work pretty well. I have a Lincoln 9" axle with open diff., one end of a 1/8" thick round fuel tank, about 4 ft diameter and 3 ft tall. And plenty of old drive line ends and lawnmower blades. Helps that I had a welding and fab business for 30 years and still have my tools...Now that I'm retired maybe I'll finally get around to it?

These are pretty sweet brush hogs when done. Have not seen any one put enough effort into one to really be a finish mower yet. A few years ago using my 48 ford 2n and a finish mower i had the pto shaft fail and come apart and a better part of 15 lbs of steel hit me in the back of the head when it happened. Fortunately I was ok just a nice gash and a big knot on the back of my head. Now when I do anything with it i have a 2ftx2ft square mesh shield that I made out of a chunk of metal goat panel fence and on each side of it a section of chain link fence offset from the other side by half of the opening so that in the end the biggest opening is only about 1.5 in at most. Its kept a few various things from clubbing me and oh can still see through it
An open differential would probably be better when you go around corners at slower speeds the blade speed will actually speed up due to the nature of gear reduction in the spider gears
To answer my own question, No it does not change the timing. It does somewhat effect how the distributor gear drops in to mates with the cam gear, maybe by a tooth or so. For perfect alignment to # 1 cylinder, you and tweak the oil pump drive rod the distributor goes into and get it to match up very very close , or perfect match up to # 1 if you get lucky.
Find a good used mower deck as wide as they make. Use the rotating yoke and attach a pulley to it to be the drive belt going to where the mower deck drive pulley is. Now you have finish mower. Find a brush hog deck that the gearbox is shot and do the same thing. If you can make it where both decks mount same way you will have brush/slasher and a finish mower that will safer to use and we will still be watching future videos.
Amazing lawnmower!! Dangerous yes!! You could machine a rear flange yoke in a way to bolt 4 blades like the brush hog have?!! Will increase the danger level 😂😂
Nice! Actually, iffin you swap out to slightly smaller tires, or air down those, and attach small brushes to the tips of the "blade" you could also use it as a lawn sweeper/lane buffer. Cuz, you know, everyone loves a well buffed lane.

I’ve wondered if an over land style trailer could be built with an axle set like that connected to a small generator that would be used to charge a small battery set up for camping. Recharge going to your next camp site?
The helmet is a really good idea! That way they can tell who's dead. That and I can never get enough of watching people driving a tractor wearing a motorcycle helmet.
i'm a retired attorney and i once heard a story that when gasoline lawn mowers became all the rage for the newly built "suburban yards" in housing plans after WW2, for a few years into these new "cutting machines", homeowners were holding them up while running and using them to cut "hedges." apparently a lot of people got hurt doing that. i don't know why your "brush hog" made me think of that story.
You may call it "redneck engineering", but in northern Scotland we class it as "made on the croft". You use what is at hand, the welds might be a bit rough, it looks a bit Frankenstein-ish, but does it work,? Yes,! Your neighbours will come round, laugh and criticise it, but also suggest a few modifications, and in two years time they will all have built a similar machine and have forgotten about the day they came round and laughed at you. Keep up the good work,! Another difference is, in Scotland it would be painted with "red-oxide" paint, as the wet weather would make it rust, and it covers the bad welds.!
And these are the videos I live for, is it practical? No is it safe? Also no but was a fun side project to take your mind off the stresses of life? Absolutely
Love it ❤. I have not one but 8 work benches on my farm/shop and modt of the time I end up working on the floor or wherever except on the bench ....stay safe 👍👍
My great grandfather made one of these. I remember watching the farmhands use it around barns and tobacco bases. That was back in the 80’s. I don’t know whatever happened to it after getting a real bushhog. Probably went to the sinkhole.
My dad and I did this in 1979, we filled the tires with water and put snow chains on, the blade was made from a f150 rear leaf spring, yes it was a beast, and dangerous
Luke, since you are a Ford man, we must be blue blood brothers from a different mother. Nice job fella as this is something I never built but thought of from time to time.
I built one of those mowers years ago but it turned to slow to make it cut good so I made a frame and off set a two to one shaft to double the RPM and it would cut good then. It sounded like a freaking helicopter and was dangerous as *uc*! But it cut good. After we used it a few times then I cut it all back apart before we got killed with it :) Great video...
Nay, I know what gets views and what doesn't- stuff like this doesn't on my channel, I did it because I wanted to. I'd do youtube a lot differently if I was here for views - views are an easy formula
Your angle iron "cutting blade" should be flipped upside down. Traditional mower blades have the trailing edge facing away from the ground and this helps create an updraft, pulling the grass up so the cutting edge shears the grass blades to a more uniform length. Fastening that flat steel stock with a sharp cutting edge will also help to cut cleaner.
Thank you!!! I'm going out to make me one but upside down and use it as a massive spreader!!! Bout to fertilize the entire farm in one day 😂🎉 YOU DA MAN LUKE

Today on things you should never make ....
Someone suggested locking one axle to double the blade speed - thoughts?
I mean... I'd build a shield between you and it if you do that, repurpose a mower deck or something. Don't want that blade coming for your head!
I think it's a great idea, but 100% you need some shield around the blade so it or rocks don't go through you.
They have TH-cam channels where people aren't eviscerated by wayward chunks of uni-strap.
... I don't watch those channels.
Build a shield to keep debris from bonking you in the back of the head.

That was the part where I had said I already made a critical mistake and looking at a mower for 5 minutes before starting would have revealed that
I disagree. Bush hogs are made for going real slow in rough terrain. this mower can be used at high speed in the big flat areas.
I thought they used a few chains.
That is a flail that uses a chain.
Really dangerous because the chains break and fly off. Bad day for you if it hits you.

"I think Imma swap a set of 3.73s into my mower this weekend..."
I love this project!
It's not stupid if it works!
Nice! Actually, iffin you swap out to slightly smaller tires, or air down those, and attach small brushes to the tips of the "blade" you could also use it as a lawn sweeper/lane buffer. Cuz, you know, everyone loves a well buffed lane.
Don't tell your boss. He's going to tell you to productize it!😊
I feel for him, he's way smarter than me - especially with handling legal and paperwork. Then there's me, the programmer who's a potato with anything else
Free towing Axle mower impressive its actually cutting pretty well with that metal
Mowwwwterinnnnnn....
I love the music you put in your videos, dude sounds exactly like Layne Staley from aic.
reminds me of the wife spinner 3000
Nice video. I like the looks of the 70's Ford pickup in the pole barn. Is it for sale?
I’ve wondered if an over land style trailer could be built with an axle set like that connected to a small generator that would be used to charge a small battery set up for camping. Recharge going to your next camp site?
The helmet is a really good idea! That way they can tell who's dead. That and I can never get enough of watching people driving a tractor wearing a motorcycle helmet.
Luke does another crazy project and still has all his limbs attached at the end: success.
It's quite cool, looks like a rehash of the ancient implements, pulled by horses or oxen.
Nice job there! (Defo bigger wheels)
Glad to see I'm not the only one that ends up doing half of the work on the ground...that's where most of my tools end up anyway!
i'm a retired attorney and i once heard a story that when gasoline lawn mowers became all the rage for the newly built "suburban yards" in housing plans after WW2, for a few years into these new "cutting machines", homeowners were holding them up while running and using them to cut "hedges." apparently a lot of people got hurt doing that. i don't know why your "brush hog" made me think of that story.
And the term "Mad Scientist" takes on a whole new meaning here! lol, good stuff Luke. Love it!! Cheers from Motown/Dearborn.
you could make it height adjustable by having slotted brackets on the shock mount area
You need to get a parent PDQ! Love it! Great to see you get a decent sized shop Luke.
It's nice after all these years to have somewhere decent to work
My dad and I did this in 1979, we filled the tires with water and put snow chains on, the blade was made from a f150 rear leaf spring, yes it was a beast, and dangerous
Thanks for the video Luke.
God I love it, I'm heading to the salvage yard tomorrow!
One of the most dangerous and awesome things I have ever seen.
I built a death mower from a ford 8.8 rear axle. 3.54 gears were not low enough for blade speed. So, I installed 4.88 gears, it was unstoppable.
dude i would expect this kind of action in a half life game. you rock.
This is one of those I'm bored and I need video content videos... love it
Nay, I know what gets views and what doesn't- stuff like this doesn't on my channel, I did it because I wanted to. I'd do youtube a lot differently if I was here for views - views are an easy formula
@@ThunderHead289 I understand it's not for view counts I just enjoy these types of videos
I liked this project. I have a 54 Ford Jubilee. Jim from Leesburg Virginia
Thanks for turning me onto a new band. I'm a huge OG AIC fan. Had me wondering if there was some new material someone had found somewhere that I hadn't heard of...
Also big aic fan✊️
