    Expanded metal would provide you with protection while still being able to see it cut...looks like I've got a project for my new welding setup...I would've never thought about making something like this, but I have everything to do it with & a 4 wheeler to pull it...awesome idea!

      Yes, expanded metal with some type of heavy duty cargo net draped over it would be good for added safety.

    Brother that thing is fantastic. Wouldn't make any changes to it but the ultimate quad upgrade is missing. All of our quads in Ireland come with a beer can holder. If it's unavailable from your quad suppliers accessory catalogue just pop down to your local bicycle shop and get a beer can holder from their accessory section (they call them drinks bottle holders but a beer bottle just falls out of it) rivet beer can holder to your mudguard and your golden.

    Just saw the old video then this popped up. People who say this won't work never played with Lego Technic as a kid in the 80's. I was cutting grass with Legos (a few inches at a time). This is far more efficient!

    Man, a chainsaw chain would be great for this. After you break the loop you can break a link at exactly half, flip it and re-link so the cutting blades face the same direction when they rotate, slip a 4 inch cut of pipe over the seam, and bolt it in like the U Joint that came out of it. I'd have to dink with it further to figure out how to make sure the chain never comes off the pipe, but that's what I picture anyways. You can even add or remove links to get that perfect width, just inside the tires. This is a really cool build, simple, functional, and made from stuff that basically any farm will have in a shed somewhere. Rock on.

    Maybe a chain or a combination of shorter flat bar with some 3/16” chain on the ends so it wouldn’t be so violent when something gets in the way. Cool concept for sure!

    I built one today but haven't used it yet. I used 1/8" cable. Drilled holes in the flange and ran the cables up thru the holes securing them with flattened nuts. This gives a couple more inches of height. Soon as I repair my atv I'll test it out and see what changes have to be made.

    Consider what could happen if anything you're using breaks as it will not be pretty and possibly deadly. If you're dead set on continuing this set up use a section of steel cable or better yet heavy duty, thick plastic string designed for a gas trimmer. It will still cut grass like butter but without all the danger involved. Please think of a worse case scenario from here on out. Good luck.

  • @jvmiller1995

    Smaller tires with knobby grips like a atv tire would speed the blade up a lot. I would get 3 good heavy mower blades. I would put one in the middle and weld a small angle on the ends 1 inch from the end of the end of the blade making a clevis. Then slide the other blade into the clevis and drill a 1/2 in hole through them and put a grade 8 bolt through the hole. Then the two outer blades would swivel like on a real bush hog if you hit something hard. And it would be some hard heat treated blades too. I still see it more as a oversized mower than a bush hog because any heavy grass I doubt it would cut. especially with a mild steel soft blade that thin. But it did better than I thought.

      We have one just like it and any grass over 3 or four feet it just locks up and drags

  • @tommylitchfield3450
    @tommylitchfield3450 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is a cool idea! The only thing I would have done differently is weld some plate to the center to make the blade wider so that you could use all 4 bolts through the driveshaft yoke instead of just 2, because like it is, if only one bolt breaks, you're cutting a tire or worse. Add an inch on each side of the cutter at the yoke and red locktite the crap out of it! I like the idea of motorcycle chain, too, at least at the last foot or so, to maybe remove a little of the shock you get hitting something hard. But that would be possibly dangerous to add chain to the bar, since it would probably break where the chain and bar join. Maybe just a length of chain from one end to the other to see how it works compared to the sharpened bar. It would definitely be easier on things if you hit a stump with a chain vs with a solid bar. But this is really a cool idea. The older the rear end, the better chance of getting some super low gears for increased blade speed. An old Willys Jeep would be geared super low, but the pumpkin is offset to one side, but man, those 5:13 gear would have that blade moving!

I do have two spare junk mowers, and just pushed one in gear, worked forward/reverse whether you were litterally in forward, or reverse. Now if made sleave for extending one set of axels/cut the spare axels Get more center clearance. Probably wouldn't push for more than 6" either side. Oh man. Maybe at some point. Lol
