This is good! I feel convicted of watching R rated films and some PG-13 films. If i start watching a film that i start feeling conviction, I usually have to turn it off. I can’t watch stuff with witchcraft because i used to dable in witchcraft back in the day. So now it bothers me to watch really dark films and films with witchcraft. Yes I don’t believe that we should be watching pornography and such. But I do believe that Secular media is not Evil. As humans we have stories to tell and things to say. And sometimes it’s bleak and ugly. But I totally agree with what you are saying about discernment.

See.... I agree with Jon. Completely. I think many people are going to analyze what he said. I felt like Jon maybe rushed through the best point; the point that most of you call "excuses".
I can handle alot. Swearing doesn't bother me. Violence doesn't affect me. But intense gore does.
I love this show called Criminal Minds. I'm sixteen and I have my parent's permission to watch it. My five younger siblings do not however, because it would bother them.
Recently, I watched an episode where a man was taking people and turning them into his puppets. I think I was pretty general when I said that. Not too gorey. The Bible provides more imagery. And I saw bones come undone... and if made me churn. I couldn't look at it. When I was younger, I looked up the ending of the Saw movie to say I watched the movie. This was purely out of peer pressure. It was awful, over the top violence. But I have a friend who loves those movies. Given: he is not a Christian. He also is able to watch any R rated movie he wants.
I think the biggest thing to avoid, especially for men, is nudity. ANYTHING that causes sexual arousal for a man, based off of sex scenes and green screens, is pornographic. Now, this is not going to damn someone's soul to hell. But as a Christian, I have to control myself from watching movies that I know would fill me with even a small bit of lust.
I think the answer to the question, from a Godly standpoint, is that the world is dark and evil and we as Christians need to guard our hearts and to choose a path of wisdom. That means to protect our hearts from what we know will cause us or someone else to stumble.

Guys I recently started watching the vampire dairies ( I know I’m so late) and I become weirdly obsessed/ defensive over it. It was my favourite thing and I would spend my day looking forward to watch the episodes. I finished season one and it was amazing . But then i realised my spirit changed , I distanced from the lord. While I was reading the bible I was thinking about what would happen in the next episode. I would have sexual dreams and fantasies about the vampires in the show. I would desire to be like the powerful girl witches and vampires in the show. Then I realised WHAT AM I DOING? how can I watch a show that shows these devil creatures. Vampires , witches and werewolf’s don’t exist and we’re not created by god. They are all the devils creation and THSI is why these shows ( teen wolf, TVD, the originals, the witches , Harry Potter , twilight) are so popular for teenage girls. We become obsessed with the idea of supernatural and even find it to be attractive ? It’s disgusting. I rebuke these thoughts in the name of Jesus . How can I spend time watching a show that has witchcraft ? I realised all the time I spent watching supernatural stuff when I was a kid ( Sabrina the teenage witch , wizards of Waverley place , H20 : mermaids) I realised how wrong this all is. I mean these shows don’t benefit us either . They cause us to become obsessed and take uo our precious time and thoughts causing us to sin. Please give up these sinful shows. It’s not worth it. I immediately stopped watching TVD and didn’t watch anymore of the seasons. It was so hard and I’m still struggling I lost my appetite and sleep I missed the show so much as it became a part of my routine ( would watch it everyday). But I prayed about it and asked the lord for help with my addiction to shows about the supernatural. I FEEL SO MUCH better now . And I’m getting closer to the lord every day. I have more control over my thoughts and I’m Genuinely happier and feel free. Trust me it will be hard to give up these shows but remember Christ has freed you, there is no bondage and every chain is broken. So don’t be a slave to these shows. Control your life with the help of the spirit. Live by the spirit and you will notice how good life can be.

The Holy spirit will convict us not based off of our conscience But rather God's truth in what he says is wrong. There is no individual truth there's only God's truth and discernment is we can discern between what is right and what is wrong and how we know is by God's word. Yes the big picture of The Bible is to point us to Christ And yes there's sex and other stuff in The Bible but that is to show us the sinful nature of man and to serve as an example of how not to live (Jude 7 In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.). The apostle Paul says in Ephesians 5 (Ephesians 5:1-12 Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. 3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person-such a person is an idolater has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. 7 Therefore do not be partners with them. 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret.) The apostle Paul goes on to say be very careful how you live your life (verses 15-17 Be very careful, then, how you live-not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.). Remember the enemy's main scheme is deception. We don't want to embrace the enemy's works which is anything sinful sexual morality, lying, foul language etc That he deceives man into thinking is ok to do because of our sinful nature.

I get what you’re saying and agree that we should not judge others, but I also think that as Christians we should be careful about exposing ourselves to sin and wickedness in culture. While we all have different levels of sensitivity in our consciences, like you said, I believe that there are principles that we should follow as Christians, whether or not we feel really moved by our conscience to do so. Just because we don’t feel bothered by a specific sin doesn’t mean that we should surround ourselves with it and have it polluting our minds...this inevitably gets between us and God! So while we must not judge, we also should not lessen or alter God’s principles, which are for our benefit, just because some people don’t feel bothered by some sins; rather we should speak the truth in love when necessary and like you said when we have a relationship with that person and it is beneficial to do so. If we aren’t supposed to commit the sin, why should be watch or listen to things that explicitly glorify that same sin? All secular culture has some sin in it and of course we will be exposed to some of that in any aspects of culture; but there are certainly there are specific things that we should not expose ourselves to at all.
I also agree that we should look at things through the lens of Christ; however, most popular culture nowadays is depicting sin in a way that’s nowhere even close to God’s definition; there is no benefit as a believe to putting this stuff in our minds and hearts. I think it’s fine to engage in culture, but I also believe that we must be careful about engaging in aspects of culture that glorify sin and do nothing but depict it in a positive. There’s plenty of things in culture that have sinful stuff in them but have beneficial things as well; that is fine and we should look at these things through the lens of Christ. But as far as things that basically depict only sin and nothing else, I believe there is no benefit for Christians to be engaging in that stuff. I don’t at all mean this in a judgmental way because I am NOT PERFECT; saves by grace alone. Just offering some insight on this difficult topic hope it helps some fellow believers! :)

I can actually think of lots of movies that do not have a Christian lable slapped on them that glorify goodness & things of God rather than sin. Some examples are: Spiderman, Edward Scissorhands, Shallow Hal, (aside from the part that implies they had premarital sex the over all message of the movie is that inner beauty, character, & love matters more than looks.) 50 First Dates, Mrs.Doubtfire, Jack, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, Titanic (Jack sacrifices himself for Rose) & the list goes on & on. I can also think of things called "Christian" that don't represent God at all. Like corrupt churches. Or priests demanding we confess our sins to them instead of God. It's not about lables. It's about content. God's principles are found beyond religious boxes. Sometimes I feel that people claiming Christianity are actually looking more for evil & division than anyone else in the world. Not everything on Earth is bad. It was infact, created by God afterall. When God says not to be a part of the world I believe He is referring to the evil in it, & the sinful nature, not every single thing about it or everything produced by those who haven't found Him yet. Unbelievers were made by & for Christ as well which is why they too also do good things in life. We are all created in God's image & meant to find our way back to Him through Jesus. I see Jesus everywhere.. not everything is evil. We are to do away with sin- not life & everything in it. Jesus said he came for us to have life in abundance & be fishers of men. He described believers as cities on hills, not hide-aways who never enjoy anything. We can never change the world like that.

And I completely agree with the sentiment that just because it may be difficult for someone to watch something doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s a stumbling block for everyone, and we shouldn’t judge others for it. I remember when I was much younger and I mentioned that I really enjoyed the movie Titanic in front of a church friend’s mother (this was back when it was rated R). The mother made me feel TERRIBLE for watching it just because it was rated R. That was not a fun experience, and I’d hate to do that to anyone else.

  • @jethroe101

So I’m assuming you went into the movie “It” with incredible intentionality then right? Saying people have different tolerances and it affected their conscience differently is actually giving an excuse to watch something that is actually probably something that shouldn’t be watched.
My friend once watched horror movies all the time and would always say “well this doesn’t effect me like it does you”. That is completely bogus. I’m not trying to be rude in this sense but the Bible is actually VERY clear on what’s called as a “seared conscience”.
Most people in the society we live in have a seared conscience because they will go see any ole movie because “well it doesn’t effect my conscience like you”. Prime example.
Shouldn’t we as Christians “Hate what is evil and cling to what is good?” Shouldn’t we not give a foothold to the enemy even through something as simple as movies.
“Do not be conformed to the patterns of this world but be transformed by the way you THINK” - Romans. We must THINK as followers of Christ and not just base everything on well it doesn’t effect my conscience so yay it must be okay. Saying something like “It’s okay if i go watch this sexually explicit movie with lots of violence and evil because if i look for good things then it’s okay. If I’m thinking about whatever is pure and noble then it’s okay.” Again giving even the smallest excuses will always open the door for sin.
I hope I’m not coming off as rude but the truth needs to be spoken and i think you are only going to lead people in the wrong direction by what you said in this video. Your heart is in the right place but you must not give excuses brother.

"It" is an interesting example, because I do think that in a lot of ways Christians can use even movies such as that as a way to reflect on their own faith. Horror in general is often gratuitous to the point of being unchristlike, but there are examples of horror which use the medium to give good messages and act in an uplifting way. The best example would be "Get Out," in my opinion. It has violence and unspeakable evil, but it tells its story to highlight society's flaws and prejudices.
Of course, the important thing above all else is to look beyond the emotional reaction, and judge the intent of a work above all else. If a horror movie creator made their movie in order to better the world around him, then his work is at least partially influenced by the Spirit, and as such cannot be immediately written off.

It is important as children of God to focus on God, especially in the times we are living in now, anything other than the word of God is just a distraction, Satan will do anything to keep our minds off the Lord; this can be through the media or even people. To be honest the most important thing to do is to keep praying

I know and believe that God will guide me and protect me every single day and moment of my life, however I am not going to sit back and relax and think that everything is going to be ok; the Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 " pray without ceasing", praying is a way to communicate and talk to God, prayer also helps to build up my faith as each time I pray I experience the presense of God. It is not a matter of whether I beleive or not, its about my personal relationship with God. I belive 100% that even if I do not pray God is with me, prayer enhances my intimacy with God. Jesus knew that God was always with him yet throughout the gospels we see Jesus constantly praying and also taught us to pray. Prayer is a demonstration of my faith and trust in God.

1 Corinthians says 'love does not delight in evil'. If you are getting enjoyment out of what God has called evil, something is wrong in your heart. I think the big issue is that, if it is glorifying sin, you shouldn't watch it. I can find a few good themes in wicked media, doesn't mean it's good. If you enjoy a movie that glorifies evil, I would really address your walk with God. If you don't have disgust for sin, you either are still growing or ignoring the spirit. Being desensitized to evil does not make it okay. I was totally fine with language and porno as a sinner. But when I got saved, God began to change me and make me adverse to these things. If you haven't change, there is no repentance and no growth. Discernment means more then a feeling, it means knowing what is evil, and avoid it. You can't rebuke something if you enjoy it as entertainment. It's hypocritical. As someone who became Wicca because of a video game, I can tell you, what you watch affects you.

Dear friends, if we deliberately continue sinning after we have received knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice that will cover these sins. There is only the terrible expectation of God’s judgment and the raging fire that will consume his enemies. For anyone who refused to obey the law of Moses was put to death without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. Just think how much worse the punishment will be for those who have trampled on the Son of God, and have treated the blood of the covenant, which made us holy, as if it were common and unholy, and have insulted and disdained the Holy Spirit who brings God’s mercy to us. For we know the one who said,
      “I will take revenge.
      I will pay them back.”
      He also said,
“The Lord will judge his own people.”
It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
      Hebrews 10:26-31 NLT
Those who have been born into God's family do not make a practice of sinning, because God's life is in them. So they can't keep on sinning, because they are children of God.
      1 John 3:9 NLT
...Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”
      2 Timothy 2:19
So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth
      1 John 1:6 NLT
We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning,
      1 John 5:18 ESV
No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him.
      1 John 3:6 NIV
We know that God's children do not make a practice of sinning, for God's Son holds them securely, and the evil one cannot touch them.
      1 John 5:18 NLT
Because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so.
      Romans 8:7 BSB
If someone claims, "I know God," but doesn't obey God's commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth.
      1 John 2:4 NLT
But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler-not even to eat with such a one.
      1 Corinthians 5:11 ESV
Be sober-minded [be sensible, wake up from your spiritual stupor] as you ought, and stop sinning; for some [of you] have no knowledge of God [you are disgracefully ignorant of Him, and ignore His truths]. I say this to your shame.
      1 Corinthians 15:34 AMP
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
      Romans 6:1-14 NKJV
These instructions were not given to Isrealites. They were given to us. The Isrealites could not stop sinning so they needed sacrifices. We can because Jesus's sacrifice was sufficient. To say we are all going to sin is to say Jesus's sacrifice was not good enough. You cannot repent of something you are still actively doing. Now accidental sin is different then intentional. When we know what to do and don't do it, that sin is intentional. Those sins come from disobedience and rebellion which is not forgiven. But when we accidentally sin and repent, turn from that sin, we are forgiven. God knows our heart and he knows if we are apologizing because we think we should or if we are truly remorseful and someone who is truly remorseful does not intentionally do the action again. If I'm truly sorry for stealing your wallet, I'm not going to do it again next week.

Huh, I didn't think of movies/TV shows that way. I think that it's almost the same as drinking. Some people drink only a little and are fine, while others go overboard and drink so much that they're not even in control of their own actions. The same applies here. Some people watch horror, or fantasy and are fine with it. For instance, I watch the Twilight Saga and Percy Jackson. I think those are interesting, in Percy Jackson it's interesting to learn about Poseidon and whoever else they claim to be a god. I don't believe in them, but it's interesting to learn about. The same way it's interesting to learn about Harry Potter or Twilight, I know they're make-believe it's just nice to watch.
Anyway, I think your video is great. It added on to what I believe. It depends on who is watching, if you watch, for example, "American Crime", some know it's horrible for someone to be treated the way Sylvia was (and for them, I thank you for having a heart) others sadly might think that it was ok for her to be treated that way (although I can't imagine why).

Human culture is inevitable, scripture gives us moral provisions not cultural provisions and it is a false claim to say that a human culture, any human culture, is beyond redemption.
It is false to claim that whatever we watch will inevitably affect us, it is even more incorect to claim that we automatically absorb the values of the media that we consume. The verse states _if_ something causes you to sin, not that these things will cause you to sin.
Philippians 4:8 is not relevant in regards to depictions of sexuality, sex can be just and pure and holy. To say otherwise is puritanism.

People forget the responsibilities of being Christian, it's not us running the show here, it's the Lord Jesus Christ calling the shots. Like just because a movie or song has/talks about drugs doesn't Automatically make me start doing them

I think we already have to much of world to see with Jesus eyes, we Christians don't have the need to contaminate our souls with secular music or movies , we already have more than enough around.
Philippians 2, 12: So then, my beloved, even as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
Once we are a bit involved with the world, we will accept little by little the world and his desires until we won't realize it and we will lose completely our focus in Christ.
Remember Christian, we were made Gods child because we have a commitment: being instruments for God to save Souls.
Don't lose the focus. There's is a lot of work to do in this world to lose our precious time watching rates movies??
Remember that the frog doesn't realize she is into normal - warm - hot and boiled water until is too late.
Ephesians 4, 27: and don't give place to the devil.

But isn't that the beauty of music and movies, and books and art in all of its forms? Every work of passion and creativity is born of God's creation, and is a reflection of the life and spiritual walk of those who made them.

Andrew Hodge .. The art was brought by the Greeks. And voilà , now the world is just running behind all this superficial stuff. Did somebody read something about Paul or Jesus stopping to observe a piece of art?
Art is for the world and his desires.
Ecclesiastes 1, 8: All things are full of weariness beyond uttering. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

Jesus told parables, and in the end art is a story through which the artist expresses their understanding of the world. Jesus did more than just enjoy art, he was a master artist. I think it's silly to say that Jesus never enjoyed aesthetic beauty or symbolism, when he referred to it so often in his sermons.

Andrew Hodge ... one thing is to enjoy the parabols of Jesus and another watch rates movies of this world. But anyway. ⬇⬇
Revelation 22, 11: He who acts unjustly, let him act unjustly still. He who is filthy, let him be filthy still. He who is righteous, let him do righteousness still. He who is holy, let him be holy still."

What about we recommend good movies ? I mean I have trouble finding a good show or movie that doesn't contain a lot of swear words or you know (sex everywhere) I start, I really like "The Shack".

I'm going to start off by saying that I don't really mind cursing, although I try to avoid it myself. With that being said, if you have Netflix you should absolutely watch "The Little Prince." It is a truly emotional and uplifting experience. It is animated, but I hope you won't count against it for that!

The animated movie The Croods has a lot of Christian themes in it coming out of darkness into light, and taking a chance (faith)! There's also lots of cool Christian movies like God's Not Dead 1 & 2, The Heart of Man, The Case For Christ. I watched the Passion of the Christ that is a violent movie because it depicts Jesus' torture, death & crucifixion but I wanted to watch it to truly understand what Jesus went through it helped me strengthen my relationship with Christ watching it!

Putting it plain and simple, each and every last singer, actress, and professional of the secular entertainment industry are of the congregation of the children of disobedience, for whom God's wrath is reserved. Far too many Christians play the role of Lot's wife, the role that Jesus warns his disciples against playing. "Remember Lot's wife". "Whosoever seeks to save his life shall lose it". In the sight of God there are only two general assemblies, the saints or the bride of Christ, and the children of disobedience. No, Christians should not be pursuing any secular entertainment period because they are saving theirs lives, the lives that they enjoyed amidst the children of disobedience before they came to Christ.

For me, as I single woman I try to avoid sexual movies/songs because those aren’t good for anyone. Movies like 50 Shades have nothing good in them.
As for violence, I try to look at the bigger message. For example, I’ve been convicted that horror movies with blood aren’t okay because there’s nothing of substance in them whereas tv shows like the Walking Dead with character development and other themes like what happens with no government, what does human nature look like?
As for language, I could care less. I don’t use it but it’s just annoying.
As for substances, I look for the same themes he talks about in this video.
I could be wrong, but again, this is what I’ve felt is okay.

  • @bailujen8052

Movies should put a warning message before the movie like Jackass did with Do not repeat any of the stunds you are about to see.
Biblical version: warning do not repeat anything sinful you are about to see and Glorify the Lord instead

The fallacy here is that whereas many of those things sex, violence etc are in Scripture it simply makes a statement in a non-graphic way. There is a difference between me acknowledging Amnon raped Tamnar are Samson getting his eyes gauged out and me watching it. One states a fact the other desensitizes your mind. Remember Jesus also said in Matthew 6 that if your eye is full of darkness your whole body will be as well.
Matthew 6:22-23 English Standard Version (ESV)
22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23 but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

I disagree with this video. I believe the scriptures are telling us to focus completely on things that Philippians 4 says. That means we should abstain from all things that are the opposite of what Philippians 4 says completely.
Whatever we put into our minds is what we become, even if we believe or think those things do not affect us. They do affect us and that is why God tells us not to engage with them. An example: you watch a lot of horror movies. You believe they don't affect you because you know they're "only a movie" and you know you won't go out and kill someone...well, maybe you won't go out and kill someone however, that movie has a negative affect on you still because the things you saw in it and in all the horror you've watched remain in your sub conscience brain and DO affect you. You also could possibly think to kill someone. Stay away completely from such things. Don't watch or listen to anything that has murder, rape, incest, bestiality, adultery, lust,etc... meaning most rap and rock and pop music and most tv and movies from Hollyweird.

I agree. We need to be mindful of our entertainment, but people take this WAY too far & get legalistic instead of following God's spirit. Then they say something extreme like "a Christian can't ever watch a rated R movie." There ARE movies rated R that glorify God that God has used personally to speak to my soul. Braveheart, The Patriot, & The Passion of the Christ are three examples. Legalism kills relationship.

Maturity isn't something about ingaging in so called wholesome things but also the opposite. Our eyes and other senses are mostly open 24/7 and they don't filter anything. Its our discernment and overall take and response to the things we hear and see that matters. I always see violence and killing in movies but I dont go around and kill people in my neighborhood.
