Oma maa / Our Native Land. Truly fortunate man, never youthfully strayed from his own land, forsaking joys of his home, far from graves of the heroes. How can a man, mortal man, complain of the order of heaven? But my sad, tired, weary heart now wants to sigh for a while. As I remember the night, when the dear homeland faded away, my heart is still longing, my yearning eyes brimming with tears. Never will vanish, never, Northland from memory, where on hillsides I heard how Sampo and kantele sang. There men were toiling and singing those songs of Väinö they sang; Boys wrestled bears in forest's gloom. Clear were the wintry days, beautiful to behold, Northern lights in the heavens blazing, glorious to behold. Oh, the midsummer time, days without end, when sun fails to cease shining over water and land! Once more, Oh Fate, do take me there, I'd known all lakes and islands and bays, I'd know all heavenly stars and the moon. There's my heart and there's my childhood memories, all my friends, and most precious of all, my darling, every thing that I love. Let those who choose Alps to praise, let them rejoice in their praises. More precious by far is the land of my birth, my beautiful home..

I think this Kullervo Symphony is the most unique compositon. Not to find such a work by anyone anywhere. Sibelius is so extraordinary, so talented, so genial: the best composer of all time. Congratulation for majestic musicians of this fantastic record. Suomi on ihmeellinen.❤ Terveisiä Unkarista.

The haunting melodies and rhythms of this piece are unique. I've loved it since I heard it the first time. The historical notes on the screen at the beginning were enlightening.

I have this LP album, but no LP player. I miss listening to it. It is a great work. Greatest recording. Thank you for posting it. I had the privilege of listening to it, live, at Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto, in the early 1980's, sung by a Finnish men's choir with Finnish orchestra and conductor. I am proud to be a Finn. Served in Finnish Army in Lapland, 1986-87. Graduated from RUK-i. I experienced the wintry, mystical forests and lakes, of the beautiful Finnish landscape. Jorma Hynninen is a haunting, harrowing, baritone, whom I love. Many blessings!

Never cease to wonder why Sib thought we shouldn't hear this in his life-time. When the first full recording became available (which was Paavo's) it was such an event that it merited a mention in the London Times of 1970. Our local record shop got a copy and very soon it was mine.

@@ahmo2 Changes in Sibelius' composition style and a move away from themes drawn from the Kalevala later in his career meant that he felt on one hand the need to edit it, whereas his self-criticism made him less willing to publish or have performed works with which he was less than satisfied. Which is why he was most reluctant to have released a work of such raw intensity.

I believe it was Paavo Berglund who made the first commercially available recording of this work in the 1970’s when he was principal conductor of the Bournemouth S.O. It remains a mystery to me why Sibelius suppressed its performance later in his lifetime as for me it is one of the greatest works of all time. A stunning live performance a few years ago conducted by Sakari Oramo was out of this world, indescribably wonderful

This is it, Paul. The one and still among the best there is available. I got it the month it came out as a birthday present on vinyl. I had read about Kullervo and how its composer had taken against it and since the 1890s he had permitted only a few of its movements performed on very rare occasions. I think this attitude of his, of striving for perfection, holds the secrets of what happened 30 years later when he became comparatively silent.

Like others, I'm mystified why Sibelius suppressed this glorious masterpiece. But then, he burnt his 8th and last symphony! Genius does have its prerogatives, I guess. Were I a rich powerful filmmaker, I'd do a film of the Kalevala tales this symphony describes. No dialogue, just the music and the action. If you know those stories, his music fits them like a glove. Think of the wolves mauling Ilmarinen's wife to death at the end of the 2nd movement. Sheer brilliance!

Thank you for the text. The letters home to his wife, and other documents, seem to confirm that Sibelius was influenced by many things Finnish, as well as the music of the late Romantic era. Another Sibelius music source here on YT claimed recently that he was "international" not nationalistic, and that it's all anti-Russian propaganda, starting with his wife's family and continuing even today!
