Berglund had this epic, monumental music in his blood. This was his second EMI reading, following the world premiere recording of Kullervo with the Bournemouth SO in 1971. I used to have that historically important version as a 2LP box set but never, before now, had I listened to the Helsinki Philharmonic account. Obviously, there are more recent recordings by other conductors/orchestras as well, some of which I do have. After a first hearing, I have to say this is a brilliant performance. Whether or not it's better than Berglund's Bournemouth version (or any of the others) is irrelevant to me. I honestly couldn't say anyway. I love the music first and foremost and this upload sounds fantastic to my ears......
