- Jean Sibelius' Op. 27 is a Suite from the incidental music for orchestra for Kung Kristian II (King Christian II), a play written by Swedish novelist and playwright, Adolf Paul (1863 -- 1943), a close friend of Sibelius'.
The historical play was about the early 16th century Scandinavian Christian II of Denmark, King of Sweden and Denmark for 10 years and King of Norway for 1 year, where he was known as Kristian Tyrann (Christian the Tyrant), and his love affair with a commoner, a Dutch girl.
The Suite is presented in 5 movements, leaving out 1 piece from the play, which was entitled the Fool's Song of the Spider.
The movements are:
I Nocturne: Molto moderato
II Elegy: Andante sostenuto
III Musette: Allegretto
IV Serenade: Moderato assai (quasi menuetto)
V Ballade: Allegro molto
The Incidental music for the play was written in 1898.
Performing is the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra led by Paavo Berglund.

Thank you very much for uploading this work. Nearly 30 years ago I went to a store for buying one cd [indeed 1 and not more, because I could never make a choise and bought too many]. On that occasion I bought Sibelius 3th instead of this work. I could not remember the name. Thanks to you I found it again.

Sibelius' one of the most beautiful pieces with the ballade " Song of the Spider" composed by Adolph Paul and best sung by Raimo Lauka. My little sister looked around for the lyrics and found them, translated, and discovered the dark side of King Christian.
photo 1.18 to 1.32 shows Sibelius standing next the green glazed room heater in Ainola, the crematorium for the two movements of the 8th symphony and much else according to Aino.

This music requires some time to get into but it's absolutely worth it. Every piece is a masterpiece itself, so beautiful! Early luscious, passionate romantic Sibelius at his best.

The final part is heroic
Does it seem to anyone else that the first movement is reminiscent of Tchaikovsky? The last movement reminds me of a Hungarian csárdás.
I thought that too! Precisely the moment right before the climax: the way he wrote it for the strings and the harmony itself reminds a bit of Tchaikovsky. Early Sibelius has its Tchaikovsky's influences but not too much so it's not sounding like an epigony.
King Christian looks so much more kingly than king wannabe trump!. Great recording; using it to practice to.
Trump was elected by the people for the people and their country. That`s not far from Sibelius.
The Nocturne theme is beautiful. Sibelius does a great job varying and building it up to the climax. I love it.

He is simply the best !
Even though from his earliest period, I find this to be his best incidental music - I quite prefer it to what he wrote for Pelleas and Melisande and for The Tempest.
I love the shots of the great man whilst this superb suite is unfolding. My number one composer for many years now. Cannot think of a single note of his that I do not admire, ranging from orchestral to chamber and piano. What a man, musically anyway.
Or i guess maybe it's Sibelius... anyhow he looks pretty thoughtful and regal to me. That was back when people could think deeply, methinks. I love the uncluttered scenes.
Usually I´m trying to comment in English, but this time it needs to be my mothertongue (unless I don´t want my original point to get lost in translation): Obwohl ich diese Suite sehr liebe, erinnert sie mich an die Musik, die meine Mutter nachmittags immer beim Bügeln im Radio hörte. So in etwa: Das Tanzorchester ohne Namen spielt den Liebestraum von Franz Liszt. Just sayin´...

Anything that composed Sibelius is poor. His works are a musical higher requirement, which is why some find boring beauty of his music. This beauty is not exhaustible in my opinion ...
You simply do not respond to this composer's music, plain and simple. We all hear music in our own manner and cannot be expected to like everything. Therefore, I will refrain from stating that you're missing out on a lot by your insensitivity to this music, but there is nothing more that can be said for it.
O dear, no soul to appreciate the greatest of composers.
