    Nearing the end of the International Dvorak-year Brilliant Classics has a surprise in store: an brand-new recording of the complete Symphonic Poems and Overtures of the great Czech master. After his hugely successful 9-th symphony Dvorak didn’t attempt to write another symphony. Instead he let himself be inspired by the rich Czech folklore, which resulted in symphonic poems based on Czech legends and fairytales: programmatic music with more than a hint of Wagner.
    Excellent performances by one of the most underestimated orchestras of Czech Republic: the Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra from Ostrava, here recorded under the inspiring direction of Theodore Kuchar, award-winning conductor, notably known for his many recordings on the Naxos label.

    For more than half my adult life (I’m 71) knowing only the “New World” and that only by its best-known tunes, I dismissed Dvorak as a drab European wannabe. Then a chum with whom I played piano duets suggested we work up Dvorak’s Legends and I fell instantly and deeply in love. I just twice listened to all his symphonies under two different conductors and orchestras (thank you, youtube) and just finished these orchestral works. And I know Rusalka along quite intimately with Kate and the Devil. I can say I’ve yet to hear a note that didn’t enthrall and delight me. Děkuji vám!

    Dvorak and Smetana may be my favorite composer. Or if not they are definitely in my top 7 composers of Classical music.
    I just love everything about the way Dvorak composes music. From the wonderful waltz melodies to the huge emphasis on the flutes and his folk music influences in general.
    Dvorak's music is incredibly therapeutic for me, I don't think I could continue going on if his music did not exist.

    This composer always makes me think of the American wilderness, especially in his time before a lot of it was cut down. His music seems an expression of nature.

    • @mikekarren5010
      @mikekarren5010 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So many composers were inspired by "nature". Beethoven, Debussy, Grieg, R. Strauss, Benjamin Britten, etc. The beginning of the first overture reminds me of Beethoven's 6th pastorale symphony. Remember though, Dvorak was the premiere Czech composer, a product of the great Eastern European schools of music! A contemporary of Brahms, Wagner, etc. These overtures have no link to America, just because he captured the spirit of the wild west of the USA, in his 9th (New World) Symphony; doesn't mean ANYTHING else he wrote has that intention. I think it unfair and even disloyal to not look to his beloved homeland to find the spirit and inspiration for his other work!

    • @10sDPR
      @10sDPR 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Dvorak actually spent quite a lot of time in rural Iowa. He even composed an entire symphony while he was there. The museum in Spillville, Iowa documents his journey experiencing "the American wilderness" there.

    • @setp2426
      @setp2426 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@10sDPR Yes, true. He came to the US in 1892, well into old age. The last five tracks here come from 1896-7 after his return to the Czech republic. He was terribly homesick his entire stay in the US, which is why he spent so much time in Spillville, where there was a large Czech community. Only the last five tracks come after his stint in the US. While there is undoubtedly some influence from his time in the US, they are more an example of his going back to his roots using Czech folklore.

    The Dvorak art is closed to the inspiration of Smetana, the Brahms classism and the optimism through an harmonic and brightness similar to the music of Schubert. These set of Symphonic Poems are true masterpieces that touch us in the deep of our soul. The elegance are amazing and only a genius like Dvorak could written these marvelous and fantastic compositions. The orchestra and the direction are flawless. • @thomassnider6691
      @thomassnider6691 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yossipeles7864 I don't agree. Perhaps a couple of pieces of his are played a lot, but they are so good I wouldn't complain. As for other excellent composers not getting their due because someone wants to play The New World Symphony again, who would you name? More Prokofiev perhaps? As for excellent composers, once you get past the first tier of composers into the second tier (which is where I would put Dvorak) the pickings get rather slim, especially after 1950. I do have a fondness for William Grant Still, and John Adams did some excellent work (an exception for my 1950 cut-off date), but all in all much classical music is mundane. It's the nature of culture that certain works stand out, and other composers, fairly or not, get left out. After all, why listen to Telemann when you can listen to Bach? But I get your point: even someone whose music tends to be ordinary (let's say Gustav Holst) can come up with something extraordinary (i.e. The Planets).

    Finding pure, authentic performances of the Husitiska has proven quite a challenge. This VERY dramatic work (very spirited, very noisy) is an example of the romantic Dvorák at his most energetic and expressive. The performance here is an outstanding one - Kuchar has really nailed every soar, every swoop, every dive of this colorful piece. Istvan Kertez performed this many years ago and is for me the standard bearer for the Hussite. Kuchar's version is on a par with that one. Thanks for posting.

      uche! That was his whole idea when writing this. He wanted fame, and thought: 'How can I get fame, hmmmm what would be a good idea?' This theme was well known for its patriotism (a Czech hymn wasn't thought of yet) so he used this. And yes!: It was a gigantic hit, uuhm well in Czechia it was. That's one of the reasons the theme later was used in the Czech Hymn. This well before Brahms asked him to write some Czech music, like his Hungarian dances, so well before his world famous Czech Dances. This piece is the first piece that put Dvorák's name in print in multiple papers. Before this piece, there were paper references, but those pieces were paid for by people who just liked that friendly weird music guy. This was the first piece that made people who didn't know him write about him!

    El primer preludio pastoral es simplemente un deleite musical, no puedo evitar imaginar un paisaje onírico donde reina la bonanza y el olvido de todo lo terreno, es como el soñar despierto de un niño que ve hadas y se siente el rey del mundo por haber derrotado un dragón imaginario. Simplemente te hace sentir satisfecho y agradecer por estar vivo para poder contemplar una de las mayores maravillas del universo, que es el hecho de haber creado organismo multicelulares capaces de distinguir las vibraciones en el aire e interpretarlas como sonido.

      Es lo mismo que sentí al oírlo. Admirable su espléndido uso del lenguaje . Fantásticas escenas que se quedan en nuestro banco de memorias inolvidables por el resplandor que irradian en su incomparable combinación de variables que causan esos viajes dimensionales, al mismo tiempo . Gracias por compartirlo. Le correspondo en su Gozo Divino! 👏👏👏♥️

    Non so perché, ma verso la musica di Dvorak vi è ancora un certo ostracismo da parte della musicologia falsamente progressista e dominante; essa è, semplicemente, bellissima e GENIALE!

      @@mildredgustackdelambre7935 Bitch, nem tudo de ruim que acontece no Brasil é culpa do suposto comunismo que nunca existiu neste país. De fato, quem nunca pensou em educar as massas para apreciar música e arte foram as elites direitistas e conservadoras que insistem em delegar a si mesmas os lugares privilegiados da cultura e permanecer neste posição de poder determinar quem entra e quem não entra neste mundo e quem pode e quem não pode apreciar dos bens culturais. Mas tomaram na cara porque suas filhinhas e filhinhos adoram rebolar a bunda ao som do funk da periferia.

      @@LyleFrancisDelp the one i received was an immaculate used copy. It was a jewel case, the classic big box where it opens and you see the one disc, then the rear side opens to show the 2 other discs (and i think there was a small booklet too - i am not sure now about this booklet from memory; set is back home and missing it dearly). The audio quality is astounding, as always the case with Brilliant Classics. The copy i was able to purchase was priced decently too. I prefer the cardboard flip-open box with discs in individual cardboard sleeves (i don't like the paper sleeves that the much more rich labels do shamelessly for their 4-5 times high-priced sets compared to BC and Naxos) but i guess, at the time of its release, jewel cases were the standard. If you see a good-priced copy on amazon or ebay, go for it. I have tried listening to others but found myself craving for these definitive renditions always. :)

    Does anyone know how to get in touch with Stephen Scott Johnson? His dissertation, Narrative and form in Dvorak's symphonic poems based on the folk poetry of Karel Jaromir Erben, would be really useful to me for my college assignment. Please help me if you know how to get in touch with him.
