Une œuvre exceptionnelle, d'une richesse orchestrale magistrale et d'une sensibilité toute en finesse, nuancée... dans l'esprit très finlandais... Un Maître du langage musical que Sibelius !

When this massive piece was first performed, it was widely accepted in Finland, but Jean Sibelius was critical and he found several parts in Kullervo, which were not good enough for him. So he took it back, and his idea was to correct it and then publish the new version. However this was a big task and he did not have enough time to do it. He had other obligations, which kept him busy. It took several years, before he had good time to do the corrections. However, during this long waiting time his style to compose had changed too much so, that he could compose some parts again and get it suit to the whole piece. The end product would have not worked unless he had composed the whole big piece again, This was a too great task. So he kept this piece banned up to his death in 1957. But he wrote in his testament, that he is not against the performances of Kullervo symphony after his death.
Because this long ban this piece sounds pretty different if we compare it to his synphonies, especially from third symphony onwards. This piece is more melodical, much rougher and it has a strong nationalistic flavour. This same nationalistic style is heard in four legends about Lemminkainen, the Karelia suite, Finlandia and to some extent also in 1st and 2nd symphonies and in the Violin Concerto. Later Sibelius rejected the national romantic style.

Kullervo has been performed partially several times in 1905-35, so there was no outright ban. kullervo120.org/start/musiikki/kullervo/tausta/
There has been the proper critical urtext edition available only from the year 2005.

I'm glad he didn't revise it later. "Establishment" has a tendency to play the latest versions but revisions often rid compositions of certain freshness and I often find myself preferring the original versions to later ones.

There's something about this music that's stirred me like no other Sibelius composition. Very moving.! Although I know it's Finnish mythology, I feel a personal affinity to it. So it is with most of his music. But this especially.

This work is fantastically balanced. What a great composer this man was. I often find it discriminatory that we favour works over others but that is life. There are moments in the score where the musicians have really done some soul searching to capture the work. Well done.

+Stewart Cairns That was probably a past event, but singing in Finnish should be quite easy. It goes as it says on the tin: the sounds and the letters correspond directly, the vowels are always the same, and if they are doubled they just last twice as long, and the same goes for the double consonants. There is never any aspiration of any initial sounds.

I really love this, especially the introduction. It really depicts the tragedy of Kullervo's life. I read the Kalevala and the Kullervo cycle intrigued me the most. Great music, and indeed it has a bit of a Lord of the Rings feel to it at times :)

Seems Tolkien 'borrowed' many concepts from various works while writing his Lord of the Rings. Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen being a big one and then Kalevala and perhaps others I am unaware of.

This is indeed a great interpretation. Unbelieveble that such an exceptional work is never to be found on greatest classical hits CD's. Jean Sibelius threw it back in the drawer after only a couple of performances in 1892, where it remained until 1972. The explanation for taking such action was that Sibelius did not trust that the common european at the time, would not understand the music due to its very nordic tone and nature. I guess some music will remain ahead of its time.

A major evolution and the most important example of revolution in the XIX century music is revealed by this , and the fourth movement is an extraordinary energetic, rhythmic and colored musical exercise. Is very strange the reject of "Kullervo" by Sibelius, during his life. The integral is played one year after dead of this, in 1958.

@berrik500 Thanks for this upload. I heard Paavo Jarvi's performance of Kullervo with the Orchestre de Paris about a year ago with the marvellous Soile Isokoski as soloist (the bass was not good) and so far it's the best I've encountered so this makes an interesting comparison. I have to say the brass section of the O.D.P. is fantastic, possibly the finest of any orchestra. I adore this music and cannot understand why Sibelius had it suppressed in his lifetime.

Sibelius is just great, he is my favorite composer beside Brahms. I highly appreciate Karajan's Sibelius recordings and his efforts to gain recognition for that great great great composer. I would love to hear a Karajan recording of the Kullervo...for those who seek for some other underrecognized Composers I highly recommend Joachim Raff. Thanks for this great recording though!

    • @maclariz
      @maclariz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think in his latter years that Sibelius said of Karajan that he was one of the few conductors at that time who really understood his work. In the current generation, it seems that the outstanding conductor of Sibelius has been Vänskä.

Sibelius was not known internationally when he composed Kullervo symphony. This may be the reason for that this symphonic poem is not known so well. On the other hand, the Finns understood first time that Sibelius is not an ordinary Finnish composer when they heard this.

I'm grateful it's not on any "greatest hits" classical c.d.'s., this music is far too sophisticated for that! Like all the greatest compositions this is for serious listening and takes time to understand. When I first heard "Kullervo" I did not fully appreciate it's complexity, now I find it an extradordinary work up with the finest ever written.

The reason for the relative neglect could be simply the fact that the entire score was not published properly until 2006 as Sibelius had gone into his "yet another one of my lousy work" mode, and did not want to have the work printed.

So, Orcun, I'm gone. All films in the air. Berrik500 doesn't exist anymore. It was not of the Karajan video's, but those of the Berlin Philharmonic. There are hundreds of them on TH-cam, but all new ones were forbidden. Everyday I had 2000 hits, and now, its gone.
But I'll come back with most of the films in better quality ( I have the copy's of the best ones) on a new account. Till then...

Yes, they are. But on Berrik 501 I'm making a new site with most of the films I had,, now with better sound and repaired videos. Only with classical music. Now I've to wait to make uploads longer as 15 minutes. But no Berlin Philharmonic, No Karajan ever more...

....YOU'VE SAID IT; And it's probably the fear of this 'misunderstanding' that made Sibelius put the work back in the drawer, after it's premiere.

This is a wonderfully sensitive performance by everyone. Would the average American symphony audience be willing to sit through it?

Oikeastaan, vaikka olen Suomalainen, en tunne tätä sävellystä, kuullostaa, hyökkäävältä ja vihamieliseltä, en pidä, varsinkaan tänä aikana, jolloin sota on käynnissä monissa paikossa ympäri maailmaa.

LuizBHMG: Your comment is extremely offensive. I am a classically-trained MODERN British composer and I have 4 degrees in music, and I've been to 2 conservatoires and one university. So, I'm well educated in music. I've been a professional trumpet and viola player as well. Therefore, I've made the effort to study music properly, and to a very highly academic (and practical) level. My music is NOT avant-garde. My music is like a more modern romantic style, combining classical/folk/rock/jazz styles. Several orchestra chiefs have said my music is well suited to romantic films as it's very dramatic, yet has pathos at other times. So, you need to stop tarring all modern composers with the same brush, as we say in Britain. For your information: Classical music is heading for an almighty crisis. Orchestras are losing audience (numbers are decreasing but no concrete figures exist at this moment in time). This is due to several things, mostly though, it's because they insist on performing avant-garde shit, that the pretentious bourgoisie pretend to like and understand. Stop insulting composers in general: It makes you look like the moron that you are.

Brian Davison: My apologies if my comment hurts you. Of course I was not referring to composers like you, but to that type you're calling avant-garde. I suppose you must be quite fastidious to have felt affected by it. I would really like to listen to your music. I really love classical music from the earliest to the latest styles. Maybe not all of them arouse my attention, but mostly. And I'm also a composer, but as a hobby and not professionally. "Stop insulting composers in general" - I don't even know any current British modern-classical composer, unfortunately, how I would be insulting composers in general? "It makes you look like the moron that you are." - I think I'm not the one who is insulting here. Please don't say such things to people you don't even know; the Internet makes people feel free to huff everyone. Even if I don't know you, I'm almost sure you'd never call me a moron if you you knew me.
