  • We purchased and installed a Gentec Hydraulic Thumb on our link belt 210 excavator. I take you through the whole process from washing the machine before beginning the install to the finishing touches and trials at the end once the hydraulic thumb was installed. Also show where we had issues and where we prevented them.

    Looks good with the hydraulic thumb. You will get better at operating it as time goes by.

      Yeah I certainly need some practice lol! Next week I’ll have a video using it for the first time on a demolition project 👍🏻 thanks for watching Scruffy!!

    Nice thumb. I'v never been on an excavator with a hydraulic thumb. In The bahamas those things are taboo 🤣 we have a manual thumb for our 320 excavator but the bin broke last year so i'm just back to picking things up with the bucket. A thumb makes a huge diffrence but i still like the fact that i can pick up anything with my bucket like an O.G 😎💪

      I hear you! I have been doing it that way my whole life lol need some extra skill to pick stuff up without a thumb. I might get lazy now with it! Don’t worry it’s only on one of our excavators though lol

    It's faster than the other hydraulics because the piston is a smaller diameter than the others.
    How's it been working for you? Have you bent the thumb piston?

    • @dirty.diggers
      @dirty.diggers  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes that makes sense! Usually why the smaller equipment always seems to move faster lol
      So far it’s been good and I have not had many issues apart from a delay sometimes it’s like it gets stuck when fully opened and I have to press the button several times to close the thumb. Other then that been great

    Great video sir. I was wandering what weld process was used to weld the thumb on? I have a potential customer wanting me to do a similar job for him. Also approximately how much did he charge for the welding job?

    • @dirty.diggers
      @dirty.diggers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! The welding process is not my expertise, so I’m
      Not sure.. I know he had to torch and cut the othe metal that came on the machine and then we helped line it up make sure it was in the spot we wanted and then he went to work on welding. it was actually a friend of my dads so my dad dealt with him not exactly sure what he paid but I imagine about a days worth of time for a welder.

    Unfortunately the thumb is not on the bucket pin so it’s picking range is limited to stick mid distance. I totally modified mine and now it works on the bucket pin, that’s so much better, now I can pick at any position. But this have a problem, it does not open fully, leave an angle so when working with bucket with arm very extended , the thumb will touch the ground. Looks like there is no way to have this working perfectly without a connecting rod similar to bucket’s.

      You are probably right, this is the first thumb we ever installed and only machine other then a mini that has one. There are for sure a few things I would have changed about the way it was installed

    So what made you choose this brand of thumb?

    • @dirty.diggers
      @dirty.diggers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Main reason was, other manufacturers were about 4-6 weeks away or more to get one. This company I ordered Friday afternoon and Tuesday morning it was delivered to our shop. It was also slightly cheaper.

      Appreciate your feedback and that was a bit of concern but it’s been fine. This was done 4 years ago now and we haven’t had any issues. It’s pretty common from my knowledge to add a thumb this way

    We have a 210 lx very similar to yours and i just found this video. I have been considering putting a thumb on ours and thought I'd ask now that youve had it on for a while how it works out for you. I've often wondered if it would get in the way digging and loading dirt, or if it is much of an issue to remove the hydraulic and maybe fab a pin to hold it against the arm close for times between jobs where you don't need it. I have seen stationary thumbs that although are not as handy as hydraulic could be moved this way and pinned back against the arm when not in use and i did see this as a plus although not as convinient as a fully hydraulic unit. I guess my question is does it get in the way on other applications?

    • @dirty.diggers
      @dirty.diggers  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! I will say that a hydraulic thumb is much more handy then a stationary one. However yes you are correct about it sometimes getting in the way when we are just digging or loading dirt.

    • @larryjones1694
      @larryjones1694 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for the quick response. I gotta admit since I wrote this I looked at your demolition video right after install and your pond side job. It looks like the dig visibility from the seat is great with it fully drawn up. That put you in a high speed handling that demo and sorting materials, and even when you were handling the dig it seemed out of the way. I guess loading is when you gotta watch truck boards and such. Thanks I think I might follow through on this. I think maybe the ease of hydraulic control far out ways having to fight a stationary manually. Too I'd guess when releasing the debris over the dumpster being able to open it would help not having it stick to the manual thumb. Thanks so much for your input. Your videos are great and your operation skills are awesome. 😊

      @@larryjones1694 Really appreciate the kind words! Thank you for watching my videos and your feedback! We have been using this machine a lot this year to load topsoil on trucks and it works fine. Only thing I’d say is confirm the placement of the thumb ours when opened at a certain angle can reach the boom… there are some scratches that have happened which I’m not a fan of lol. That and the little bit of resistance from closing the bucket as much when it has a full scoop of dirt are about the only draw backs. But if you need to do demos or clearing brush boulders etc a hydraulic thumb will make your life much easier and outweigh the cons.. which aren’t even too bad. Good luck! Let me know how it goes
